The 2015 CIU Annual General Meeting takesplace on April 11 at the Norbreck CastleHotel, Blackpool.

Union President George Dawson is urgingclubs to nominate delegates for this year’sConference and ensure that they have theopportunity to influence the future of theirclub – and CIU clubs as a whole.

“We understand that finding the money tosend delegates to Blackpool is an issue forcommittees, but it’s your club’s chance tohave its say, and it’s your club’s chance todetermine its future,” said Mr Dawson.

“Think how hard we all fought for theright to vote. If you don’t send anyone, youcan’t complain about what’s decided. Andwhat a wasted opportunity.”

Conference sees the publication of theUnion’s Annual Report, which includeseverything a member club needs to knowabout the Union including information on

legislation affecting clubs, the Union’s LongService Awards and its varied sportscompetitions.

The Norbreck Castle Hotel is the NorthWest’s largest integrated conference andexhibition centre with an array of facilities,including the 4,000-capacity, 2,000-sqmNorcalympia where the Beer & TradesExhibition will be staged on Friday April 10,the day before Conference takes place in thehotel’s Ballroom.

“The Norbreck Castle Hotel is a veryimpressive venue and will be a fitting stagefor this year’s Conference and expandedTrade Show,” added Mr Dawson.

“With the Grand Final of the DransfieldsCIU National Quiz also taking place inBlackpool during Conference week, there’seven more reason than ever for clubs to senddelegates to Conference to take part in thisimportant event.”

Crookes SC in Sheffield will be staging a major folk concert this month in order toraise funds for two well-deserving charities.

The club is hosting the Sheffield Folk Sing Concert on January 30 in aid ofParkinson’s UK and The Alzheimer’s Society, organised by local folk stalwart ValCivico.

It follows her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease 18 months ago and her husbandPeter’s diagnosis with a rare form of dementia the previous year.

Val said: “Dementia is a cruel, dreadful disease. Looking after a dementia sufferer isexhausting, both emotionally and physically. A carer’s role is hard for anyone but I findit very tiring because of my Parkinson’s Disease.”

The charity concert will feature entertainment from a number of South Yorkshirefolk musicians, both well-established and new on the scene.

Ray DavidsonThe NE MetBranch Executiveare saddened toreport the passingof our Vice-President Mr RayDavidson onDecember 1 2014.

Ray died suddenly at home in bedfrom a heart attack.

Ray has been on the BranchCommittee since March 1995 andduring that time he served asGames Secretary and, more recently,as Branch Vice-President.

As Games Secretary, Ray startedto run the Cribbage and Dominoesc0ompetitions on the same day at asingle club, a move that proved tobe highly successful.

He also started the competitionfor the “Nettie Seat”, which hasprovided a lot of fun and enjoymentbetween the cribbage players in thedistrict.

Our thoughts at this time go outto his wife Jan and all their family.

OBITUARY

A charity fun day held at Sheerness East WMC in Kent raised a total of £1,055 for DiabetesUK last month.

The event was held in memory of Irene Dunn who had been a keen darts player beforepassing away with a pulmonary embolism in November of last year.

IU Head Office hosted anIntroduction/Induction Event forall Branch Secretaries in November.

The event, which was also attended by theUnion Officers and National Executive, gaveBranch Secretaries the opportunity to meetand hear presentations from the Union’sNational Account Holders.

Co-op Bank, Aon, Dransfields, BOC andSmart Energy were all present to outlinetheir services on offer to CIU Clubs andanswer questions from the floor.

For most of the Branch Secretaries, thiswas their first visit to Head Office and anopportunity to meet the staff and hear fromStephen Goulding, Office Manager; SteveConnell, Union Accountant and MaureenRoss, Rules Secretary.

Topics covered included the current roleof Head Office and ongoing projects beingdeveloped to generate increased revenuestreams for the CIU, improved IT systemsand improved lobbying and raising

awareness of the Union with MPs andexternal companies.

Union President, George Dawson CMD,introduced and presided over the event, aswell as chairing an interactive session on theroles of the National Executive Committeeand Branch Secretaries.

General Secretary Ken Green CMDoutlined planned developments on

recreation and the Union Vice PresidentJohn Tobin and member of the CMDWorking Group Ken Roberts spoke of workcurrently being undertaken to plan anddeliver a new, professionally accredited examfor CIU members.

Later in the session, CIU Webmaster SteveBridger demonstrated the newly launchedUnion Website which is designed to be amore informative, user-friendly site withBranch Pages and links to local events andcontacts as well as outlining national policy.

The new website is the result ofconsultation between Steve Bridger and theOffice Manager Stephen Goulding andgoing forward will rely on feedback fromBranch Secretaries to help ensure it remainsan informative and useful resource formembers.

The Induction was well received withpositive feedback on all aspects on the eventand the Union will be looking at holding asimilar event in 2015/2016.

nited Services Social Club, in thedelightful seaside town ofHunstanton, is set in luxuriant

grounds, nestling within the Norfolkcountryside overlooking The Wash. Openedas a British Legion club in Westgate in the1950s before establishing itself in its currentspot in the decades since the 1970s, it’s a truetreasure amongst the local community.

The venue is rightly proud of itsmembership, which stands at 1,700 withgrowth over the past year and is clearly onthe correct path in terms of boosting as wellas retaining it. The club offers a range offacilities that any club would be proud of,including: a varied mix of weekly liveentertainment, a snooker room with threefull-size tables, league darts and a big-screenTV so customers can relax whilst watchinglive sport, as well as a fully stocked bar and aconservatory.

Add to that a range of enticing eventsthroughout the calendar and it’s easy to seewhy the place is so well known and loved inthe area and beyond.

It’s not a place where you’ll find an air ofcomplacency, though, when it comes tofinding ways to boost business with itsentertainment schedule, as Club SecretaryElizabeth Turner explains: “We offer a rangeof live music and also regular bingo andKaraoke nights which attract a loyal base ofcustomers as well as new ones”, she says.

“We also have weekly cribbage meetingsplus snooker, darts and dominoes teams aswell as quiz nights and do special meals atweekends to add to our regular foodoffering.”

In terms of the facilities at the club, a visitto either the website or, best of all, the clubitself quickly shows why this venuecontinues on its successful path as one of theplaces to be in the area.

“We have a very large lounge at the club,which we obviously need with such a solidmembership,” says Libby, as she’s knownamongst staff and regulars. “It’s also got adance floor which appeals to many of ourcustomers. Of course the bar area andsnooker and pool rooms are also very

important, as is our function room forweddings and parties,” she explains.

Naturally, a club of this stature is notfound wanting when it comes to hosting anarray of special events.

“Around once a year, we’ll host a charityday and on a more regular basis we’ll haveopen days in the garden with barbecues, livemusic and stalls – the mayor has beenknown to drop by as well,” she says.

When asked about any memorablemoments in the club’s recent history, Libbyis spoilt for choice. “There are always thingsgoing on!” she tells us. “Our open days arealways very well attended and we get a fewhundred people in the garden for that. Also,we hold the Christmas lunches for the localLions club which takes about 680 people –not all in one sitting, obviously, but overabout six days!”

This is truly a club built on solidfoundations, catering for family as well assingle customers. And with the cold wintermonths ahead, a very warm welcome at thisvenue is guaranteed.

followed by Cyber Monday when it was reported wespent £676.5million and retailers braced themselvesfor the 151 million visits to our favourite shoppingwebsites.

But what happens if after all your efforts to buy theperfect gift, something goes horribly wrong with yourorder and you have had to make a complaint only tofind the issue has not been resolved.

It may help to know that a new retail watchdog hasbeen set up this year to help customers deal with theirconsumer complaints more effectively. This service hasbeen developed to aid everyday retail shoppers andconsumers with very serious complaints, who may not

have the means to be able to afford legalrepresentation.

The service will be overseen by an independent boardand the Ombudsman will charge companies up to£2,000.00 a year to voluntarily belong to this newscheme and £45.00 for each case it takes on The RetailOmbudsman website currently lists Debenhams,Mothercare, Halfords, Argos and Boots among thosewho have joined.

By dealing with member of the Retail Ombudsman, thepublic may have confidence about the retailerspractice and procedures, including the way in which itaddresses any future customer complaints.

2. If in doubt, don’t click: Never open emails,links or attachments received from peopleyou don’t know. If an email seemssuspicious, contact the relevant organisationand don’t give out personal details. Noreputable business will ever ask forconfirmation of details by email.

As reported in last month’s Club Journal, JohnHarris has stepped down as NEC Member forLeicestershire & Derbyshire.

John, 76, was asked to stand for the NEC inlate 2009 and served for five years on the NECas member for Leicestershire and includedDerbyshire from January 2012 until Novemberwhen he was forced to retire due to mobilityproblems which made it impossible to travelon public transport to London for NECmeetings.

“It’s a great shame to have to resign but I justcannot get on trains or buses any longer,” saidJohn. “I was hoping to serve until at least theend of next year for the normal term of officebut it wasn’t to be and there will now have tobe a by-election to replace me.

“But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my timeserving as an NEC member. It has been veryenlightening and I feel I’ve done my bit and ithas been very worthwhile.”

John has been a member of NottinghamOddfellows Club in Leicester since 1956 whenhe joined as an 18 year old and served asPresident as well as in several other posts.

“I’ve been associated with my club for nearly60 years and have seen an incredibletransformation here, from nearly goingbankrupt in the 1960s to our current status ofhaving £1million in the bank,” he said.

The Mutuals’ Redeemable and Deferred Shares Bill

Members of the House of Lords have giventheir support to the reforms which wouldexpand and strengthen the co-operative andmutual sector through the Mutuals’Redeemable and Deferred Shares Bill.

In October, after the second reading of hisprivate member’s bill, Conservative peerLord Naseby said government backingwould create a “positive outcome tomutuals and consumers”.

Lord Naseby’s bill would create newclasses of share through which specifiedmutuals can raise additional funds, whilstsafeguarding their mutual status.

It would provide defined rights tospecified mutual society members andrestrict voting rights of certain members, sothey cannot participate in decisions todissolve the mutual.

This would amend the law relating tosocieties registered under the Industrial and

Provident Societies Act and those underthe Friendly Societies Act 1992.

Lord Naseby has argued that under thenew legislation mutuals would be able to“source external capital without losingtheir mutual status” as it was “important tolearn the lessons from the recent financialcrisis”.

Treasury Minister Lord Newbycommended the bill, saying that “access tocapital and credit is the lifeblood of anycompany” to “increase their financialresilience” and acknowledged that thecurrent design and structure “deprivesmutuals of access to the equity market”.

However, he remained “unpersuaded bythe merit of a redeemable shareinstrument”, as mutuals already had accessto these instruments, and urged they bedeleted at next stage of the bill, at acommittee of the whole house.

As many of you will have seen mycomments in the Daily Mirror (via theBarnsley Chronicle) about the high fees thatcertain rank-and-file club entertainers thinkthey’re entitled to, I thought I’d expand onthis issue for readers of Club Journal, manyof whom will have had direct experience ofbooking entertainment for their club andencountered similar problems.

It seems to me – and by no means am Ipointing my finger at all entertainers – thatsome of them are getting an inflated idea ofthe sort of fee that they can command for aperformance at a club because of theprevalence of reality shows like The X-Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, shows whichdon’t put an emphasis on entertainerslearning their trade in smaller venues.

Quite often, you get entertainers whodon’t grasp the reality of the economics of aclub. From my experience in Yorkshire,some singers and bands will be happy to goand perform at a local pub for £100 butthen they’ll come to a Working Men’s Club,look at the size of the building and theconcert room and decide that they’ll try andcharge £200-£300 for their services.

But if we’re paying that sort of fee, we’reunlikely to be making any profit on thenight as we have to make five times the costof the entertainment just to keep our headabove water. It doesn’t stack up and forentertainers to keep making money fromthe club circuit, we need to be makingmoney. Many entertainers are under themisapprehension that the size of the clubreflects the size of the audience and thesedays it often doesn’t!

Live entertainment is still an integral partof Working Men’s Clubs but in my opinionthe standard of performer that we saw in the1970s on the circuit was much superior tothe general standard of today’s entertainers.And the main reason for that was that theywere all happy to serve their apprenticeshipby performing night after night on the clubcircuit in order to hone their acts – be theysingers, comedians or whatever – andcrucially for a sensible fee.

One of my main concerns is that manysocial clubs do not have the necessary typeof cover in place to ensure that in the eventof any unforeseen circumstances theirbusiness is adequately protected.

Employers’ Liability Insurance, whichcovers you if an employee is injured or hurtduring their day-to-day role, is a legalrequirement and forms part of UKlegislation.

Committees always assume theresponsibility for the safety of theirmembers and guests which leads to arequirement for Public Liability insurance.

Secretaries and Committee memberscould ultimately be left personallyaccountable for a lack of adequateinsurance cover leading to personal,financial and even criminal action.

So, what are the risks of not having anycover?The consequences of not having anyEmployers’ Liability cover are that you arebreaking the law and could be subject to afine. A lack of Public Liability insurancecould open your club up to very expensiveclaims in the event of negligence withinyour premises. On top of all this, anyexpenses incurred that would have beencovered by an insurance polity, willsubsequently have to be settled from yourown funds.

What, then, is underinsurance?Underinsurance is where you take out apolicy but for a value less than the items atrisk that you are wishing to cover. If you areunderinsured by say 50 per cent, theinsurer will only settle at 50 per cent of thesum specified or could ultimately decidethat the claim is repudiated and nosettlement is made.

Caine and Russell Watson – to name justfour acts who emerged from the club circuitto become household names.

There are some great entertainers outthere who offer fantastic value for moneybut they seem to be getting thinner on theground. In particular, there’s a distinct lackof comedians coming through the circuit atthe moment for one reason or anotherwhich is a great shame.

The best performers, from myperspective, are the ones who see the need toserve out an apprenticeship on the clubcircuit for sensible fees and develop theiracts over time. Basically, building on theircore product, something which seems to meto be good business.

To cite one such performer from my neckof the woods – a singer/songwriter by thename of Jimmy Echo. He’s been on thecircuit for many, many years and comesalong with all his own modern equipmentbut represents the sort of good valueentertainer who will be a perennial favouritefor our type of club.

There are other entertainers for whomperforming is a second job away from theirday job of being a builder, joiner orwhatever. In years gone by, these were theones who would go out and entertain atclubs because they enjoy performing andmoney was secondary. We now seem to be ata stage where money is the primary concernof performers and therefore it means they’reseeking unrealistic fees from clubs. Many ofthem are not professional performers butseem to want professional-level money!

That is why I have talked aboutentertainers being in danger of ‘killing thegolden goose’. By this I mean that the wholesystem breaks down when we all startbecoming skint as live entertainment willbecome too economically unviable for clubsto bother with.

It would be great to hear what you thinkabout this issue and whether this is aproblem which is being encounteredthroughout the Branches.

We will be publishing the full list of discounted fixtureswhich will be available to CIU members throughout 2015in next month’s edition of Club Journal.

You will then be able to make a booking for the racemeetings of your choice by filling in the accompanyingform along with a cheque made out to the appropriateracecourse.
