The rain did have an effect on the ability to take photos and after
being thoroughly soaked the camcorder didn’t want to function very
well.
On track the McRae’s (Colin and Alistair) entertained with a masterful
display in two very well sorted MK2 Escorts, they were so quick that
even in the wet Jonny Milner could barely pull and distance over them
in his Prospeed Skoda Octavia WRC.
on hand for interviews throughout the day were a variety of rallying
celeb’s old and new, the old stagers being Pentti Airikkala and Bjorn
Waldegaard and David Llewellin and Phil Short and the youngsters
being led by Gigi Galli (current Mitsubishi driver) and Jonny Milner (Not
so young now!)
After the lunch break there was a
display of all Richard Burns’ ex
rally machinery from his humble
Peugeot 205 gti, through to his
Legacy and Impreza and most upto
date the Peugeot 206 WRC,behind
the procession was the man
himself obviously stillunable to
drive, waving at
the huge crowd of fans from the
back seat of a car, a sad reminder
that we are all onlyhuman after
all.I would recommend the
Rallyday to anyone and even though it is a long haul and a night in a
hotel tickets are a bargain at £10 so there is no excuse any more I
WILL be going to Rallyday 2006

Not too much to mumble about this month as I have been very busy
with trying to prepare the Sunny for it’s debut as a sprint car
hampered by a bit of bad luck and mechanical mishaps! It gets MOT’d
on saturday so I hope it is all sorted now, it has been a bit of an
arduous week.
Mike has proposed an off road buggy race as an aside to karting, it
might be worth having a bash as our last off road race was some 7 or
8 years ago and resulted in muddy mayhem!
Karting is going well although it seems odd that to fill 20 karts is so
hard, there have been 40 different drivers in the first three races
alone, is it really that hard to commit?

At the 3/4 stage we have a new championship leader in Mike Smailes
following his massive effort in organising the day out at Croft for
Ned’s 80th birthday and the huge amount of publicity generated in
the press. Derek Holgate leaps into third with all his efforts as safety
officer on the Jim Clark memorial rally being recognised.
This month sees the addition of the club night attendance points in
the table (min. 20 attendances to qualify as per Championship Rules)
and as a result there is a breakaway group at the top of the table but it
is not too late to get another 16 points added to your total just by
attending the club nights.

What’s in a name?What’s in a name?What’s in a name?What’s in a name?
Ever wondered what those acronyms that form a car makers badge
mean? Well now you can astound your friends down the pub with an
amazing knowledge of car trivia.
TVR is actually formed from the first name of the company's founder
TTTTreVVVVoRRRR Wilkinson.
Swedish car and aircraft builder SAAB actually stands for SSSSvenska
AAAAeroplan AAAAktie BBBBolget
Despite rumours that FIAT stands for Fix It Again Tomorrow it is in fact
short for FFFFabbrica IIIItaliana AAAAutomobili TTTTorino
MG the on- off makers of old mans cars stands for MMMMorris GGGGarages
which does even less for the flat cap image
Our Teutonic friends in the south of the fatherland produce BMW’s
which is the abbreviation of BBBBayerische MMMMotoren WWWWerke and not Bob
Marley and the Wailers
BSA the bike manufacturer is alarmingly BBBBirmingham SSSSmall AAAArms
Truckies might be glad to know that ERF are the initial letters of EEEEdwin
RRRRichard FFFFoden
Our cerveza necking friends at SEAT would probably need a siesta
after reeling off SSSSociedad EEEEspanola de AAAAutomobiles de TTTTurismo
So there you are you can be the envy of all your friends (if you have
any) as possibly the most boring person in the pub, except for the old
bloke who smells of wee in the corner, you know the one with the flat
cap and a whippet, the one who makes a half of bitter last for 3 hours.

Becoming familiar with the TR came in very useful when the firm
decided to enter a team in an international rally as a means of gaining
more publicity for it’s products.
The rally chosen was the 1959 Scottish RAC rally and the team
comprised Bobby Parkes and Mr Mallen with respective wives in two
mark 2 Jaguars and Peter Harding and myself in the TR.
As you will no doubt have guessed, the Scottish in those days was far
different than it’s format subsequently. Then, over four days of the
event, HQ in Oban, we toured each day around the quiet roads and
impressive scenery of Scotland, returning to Oban for the night.
The TR acted as pathfinder for the Jags and the only thing to watch
was that we did not exceed the 40 MPH average speed between
controls.
The competitive side of the event was the driving tests, take either in
the morning before setting out for the day or in the late afternoon
after the days motoring. these were on smooth surfaces and large
areas with simple tests around cones. Distances were much greater
from start to finish than in today's tests, so speed and acceleration
were vital factors. Luckily the TR has both and Peter (The driver of the
car) got a class win.
I don’t remember how the Jags fared except that both driver seemed
content with their performance. Overall it was an enjoyable event, the
weather warm and sunny, enthusiastic school children lined their walls
and cheered us on. The rally atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and
I felt privileged to be a member of an actual works team.

Does my bum look big in this!Does my bum look big in this!Does my bum look big in this!Does my bum look big in this!
After looking at competing in a sprint or hill climb for over a year I
finally made the decision to enter the Wigton run event at Teesside
autodrome on August bank holiday Monday, the only problem was that
I only decided on the 8th of August and I did not have a licence or a
race suit.
So there was a bit of a panic to get my MSA national B competition
licence but there are very few applications so late in the year and it
came with over a week to spare.
Mike had agreed to loan me his suit so that problem too was
sorted...sort of. By the time I got round to trying it on it was apparent
that I was quite a bit larger than Mike and although it did fit it was,
well, tight! A panic ensued and I ordered one from Demon Tweeks
online on the Thursday hoping it would come on Saturday, which as
can only be expected it didn’t, plan B was swung into action and
Mike’s suit it was to be, I can only blame myself for leaving it too late
although I would rather blame Parcel force or Demon Tweeks!
I also had car trouble before the sprint having to replace the front to
rear brake pipes, nice job to do on the drive on your back...NOT. I was
still not happy with the brakes even by the time of the sprint, they
were good enough to pass the MOT but just felt spongy and only had
a firm feel after pumping the pedal a second time.
But, i made it I competed in my first speed event, didn’t crash, got
faster with each run and I am now looking at doing the whole
Wheatsheaf series next year, budget permitting, and my bum does not
look big in my nice shiny new Sparco race suit.

If you built a car would you use such a corny name? Perhaps its
constructor was a fan of the car in the childrens programme
"Thunderbirds" and cribbed the name from their car Fireball XL5? This
car was designed and used for the track racing series run by
Speedworth Ltd these races were usually held at speedway venues
mainly in the south of the country. Designed by Frank Boyle and built
by Ian Bayley at JB Developments of Aldershot. Power was from a Mini
engine fitted complete with subframe at the rear. This single seater
proved very quick with an all up weight of only 272Kg (less than
600lbs). When used away from the cinder tracks the Fireball frequently
proved to be faster than the Formula Ford cars of the period.

Don`t get too excited but its true, the Motorsport Development Board
(MDB) is supporting the Energy Efficent Motorsport (EEMS) project to
the tune of £145,000 to support three existing race teams using
alternative fuels. Two of the teams are competing in the Le Mans
series one with a diesel powered car and the other with a bio-ethanol
powered car, the third team which some of you may have heard of is
the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) powered car which ran in last years
Touring car series and will do so again this year.
There is more information on EEMS for the technically minded in the
booklet which is available on any club night from the secretary.
Jumped starts & F1 races Jumped starts & F1 races Jumped starts & F1 races Jumped starts & F1 races
Have you noticed that nobody ever jumps the start these days? There
is a reason for this and as you might have guessed its all down to
electronics. One day someone had the bright idea to put an electronic
tell tail in the track surface which is linked to the starting lights and
would indicate if the car jumped the start. Now it didn`t take the team
boffins long to realise that if they developed a transponder in the car
that held the car on the grid and then released the car as the tell tail
switched off (remember its linked to the starting lights) then the car
would get a perfect start every time. All the driver has to do is have the
car in gear and have sufficent revs `on` and the electronics do the
rest. Simple, the perfect start and not a hundreth of a second wasted.
wish.

Tuesday afternoon, July 19th and, with dave and Derek in attendance
I’ve greeted my driver Walter and I am getting strapped into a Porsche
944 Turbo to do 3 laps of the circuit in his experienced and very
competent hands.
before going any further let me with hindsight say that doing
something like this for the first time, no one could imagine what it
would be really like, i certainly hadn’t.
i am sure both Dave and Derek had made suggestions and I likewisw
indicated that I wanted to be properly entertained, so, off we went. I
tried to estimate the braking point for the first long righthander, I
need not have bothered, we didn’t! Next the chicane, same again. Turn
attention to the lines taken, use of track, steering. first lap w e seemed
to use most of the track, occassionally nudged a kerb and a touch of
opposite lock to make the tail behav when cornering.
i think from the grin on my face, walter realised I was appreciating the
experience so he really turned the wick up second time around. we
used all the track and all the kerbs plus about 1 metre of run off
somewhere at the back of the circuit. Opposite lock seemed in
operation most of the time, left or right and at one point the car tried
to take over, twitching violently exiting a corner. However Walter had
other ideas and straightened us out almost immediately, we both
grinned this time!
Final lap a repeat of the second (without the moment) and all too soon
we are coasting to a stop in the pits. It’s difficult to put feelings on to
paper, I think the overriding thrill was motoring as never before, being
driven in a way that I could never have driven, and luckily being able to
appreciate the skill and competence so ably demostrated.
Can’t end without a big thank you to all my friends in S & DMC who
made it possible. As a birthday gift it was tops. Ned Brook

Whilton Mill Karting centre. Whilton Mill Karting centre. Whilton Mill Karting centre. Whilton Mill Karting centre.
I recently competed in a GP karting event at Whilton Mill which is just
off the M1 near Junction 16. There are 2 tracks the larger approx
1.4Km and the one we were on just 600m long. The format of the
races was similar to Teesside as were the karts except they were only
single engined, there was room for the second engine but nobody had
got round to fitting it! The track, despite its short length was great
although overtaking was tricky as there was only two corners which
required braking, there were several waved black flags during the
afternoon but no stop go penalties thank goodness. Whilst the venue
and surroundings were excellent the personal equipment supplied was
poor, in fact it was rank! The helmets which all seemed to have
scratched visors all stank and the !
gloves (yellow gardening gloves) were sorted by smell...yes the
promoter sniffed each one and discarded the smelliest, the ones
handed out were disgraceful so just what the dissuaded ones smelt of
I'll leave to your imagination. So, if you're in the area its worth a visit
assuming you take your own helmet and gloves.
The larger track was in use for `mini` bike racing. This is for all the
budding Valentino Rossi`s of this world. The bikes are about 12" high
and the riders about 7 years old but equipped with knee sliders and
Rossi leathers put on a great show of racing. If you ever get the chance
to watch it don't hesitate its brilliant but watch out for the over
enthusiastic parents!

Perhaps I missed it but I don't recall noticing any overtaking after the
first lap. As Martin Brundle said "they really must do something to
improve the racing". If it is true that the turbulent air stretches for 130
yards behind a GP car then the aerodynamic aids must be removed to
allow cars to run close together and re-introduce overtaking. After all,
Silverstone is one of the widest tracks in the world and if they can't
overtake here there is little chance of doing so elsewhere. Surely they
must learn from the exciting racing demonstrated by those death
defying riders in Moto GP.
