GuIDES HIT THE HEIGHTS

Residential Proiect I Activi

The project includes overnight coach travel to and from Switzerland and staying for10 nights in self-catering accommodation in the mountain village of Grindelwald inthe Bemese Obeiland;

During the stay the girls will be split into 4 groups each with 2 leaders. Each groupwill rotate carrying out daily tasks including the preparation and cooking of meals, keeping the lodge clean and tidy, shopping - bread, milk etc from the village stores asrequired. (This gives them an opportunity to try out their German).

Daily trips/visits duri..ngthe stay will, apart from walking on mountain paths, includetravelling on as many forms of loGaltransport as possible (Chairlifts. Gondalbahns.Cable Cars, Fumcular/Mountain Railways, Post-buses and Lake Steamers.

It is hoped, subject to funds, to include the following:

The Top of the Jungfrau (The highest Mountain Railway in Europe)We start our journey at Grindelwald Station on the first stage of our journeydown the hillside on a rack and pinion railway down to Grund. From herethe train changes direction and begins its long, steep climb to KleineScheidegg including gradients of 1 in 4. By the time time we reach here thesnow line is bP..comingclearer. We change trains here onto the Jungfraubahnwhich then continues upwards entering the side of the Eiger. As well as avisual and-continuouscommentary about the Railway, twice we are advisedthat the train will stop within the mountain and on each occasion passengersdisembark to walk to Viewing Galleries, huge windows cut into the NorthFace of the Eiger and looking onto the snow-fields, cliff faces and the villageof Grindelwa.ldway below. After arriving at Jungftaujoch Station (3.454m) which is still inside themountain; we hope that subject to weather conditions, we will be able toaccess the glistening snow fields, a magnificent panorama as far as the eye cansee. Here there is potential for rides on the husky drawn sledge. racing on theSnow Discs and, no doubt, snowballing.Next we will take the lift to The Sphinx, (observatory) the highest point of theMountain before visiting the Ice Palace to see and take photographs of thefantastic Ice Sculptures. In between this we must make time to eat our packed lunch and purchase apostcard stamped "from the Top of Europe"

Murren and The Top of the Schilthom (piz Gloria of James Bond Fame). This trip includes a Funicular Ride from Lauterbrunnen to Grotschalp then afabulous Train Ride along the ridge to the mountain village of Murre~ lookingout across the valley towards the Monch, Eiger and Jungfrau mountains. Thisis followed by a gentle stroll through the pretty village to the Cable CarStation for two exhilarating Cable Car Rides to the Summit for a Spectacular360degree panoramic view of the mountain peaks.

The journey back to the valley includes a thrilling 3rdCable Car Ride whichlaunches itself off of the edge of the mountain down to the valley floor. At thebase station we board a Post-bus for a journey to the Trummelbach Falls. Here we take a lift up inside the mountain, followed by a walk up a longseries of steps, within the caverns, to viewing galleries to watch the watercascade down from the Glaciers at a rate of 20,000 litres per second - causingan almighty roar and on some of the viewing galleries splashing everywhere(cagoule are a definite must).

The World Guide Centre - Our Chalet -AdelbodenThis visit is a MUST for all Guides visiting Switzerland. The journey could be by coach and mini-bus or by train. The latter, whichwould be our preferred option for cost reasons, would include 3 train changesand a post-bus ride. This might prove difficult however, subject to time-tables.Our visit to Adelboden will include a guided tour of and Film Show about thehistory of Our Chalet and hopefully provide the girls with the opportunityof meeting and exchanging badges and souvenirs with Guides from other partsof the world. We will also be able to explore the grounds, take in thewonderful scenery and visit the Chalet's own Guide shop.Apart from the opportunity of sightseeing in the wonderful village ofAdelboden, the girls will also visit the local Woodcarvers to see his family atwork and the huge range of beautiful carvings that they make. Because of theWodd Guide and Scout Centres located nearby, they provide smallScouting/Guiding souvenirs and other small carved items for the children topurChaSe. Interestingly the ceiling of his shop is covered by thousands ofScout and Guide badges from around the world.

The BaIlenben! Open Air Folk MuseumThis trip includes train rides from Grindelwald to Interlaken and on to Brienzwhere we pick up a post-bus to Ballenberg. The museum is a large collectionof Tradition Rural Chalets and other historic exhibits. Various traditionalcrafts and trades are demonstrated in and around the museum buildings.Crafts include lace-making, embroidery, patching, and linen-making. Tradesinclude bakery, farriers, blacksmiths etc.

Brienzer Rothorn Mountain Railwav and I~ake BrienzWe take the train to Interlaken and then on to Brienz where we climb aboard

the cog-wheei railway to chug our way very slowly up the mountain. Tnis tripprovides panoramic views across the town of Interlaken, and stretching outeach side of it the Lakes of Brienz and Thun. Marmots can be seen runningabout, and cattle, with traditional Swiss bells, can be seen and heard on thehigh pastures. As the train ascends the mountain a line of very sharp steeprocks make an awe inspiring sight way above us. Surprisingly the railwaywinds around these and throughout the journey you can see the trains in frontfollowing the huge loops of the line as they climb steeply to the Surnn:rlt.A short walk takes us to the viewing platform which provides yet morespectacular views of the Alps.

Our journey back down takes us to the Lakeside where we join one of theLake steamers for the journey which criss-crosses the Lake and gives us theoppottuttity to stop off at the beautiful Giesbach Waterfalls for a further walkbefore rejoining the boat back to Interlaken. One of the boats on the Lake is a

paddle steamer on which the engine room is visible from a viewing gallery onthe lower deck.

Msnnlichen Gondalbahn and Wene:en Cable CarWe start the day Witha -bnsk dowDhlllwaik through the village and across themeadows to the Mannlichen Gondalbahn Station at Grund. This is a four-seater gondalbabn - the longest gondola cable-way in the Wodd - whichstretches upwards over Swiss Chalets, steep ravines, wooded hillsides andgreen paSfui'es up to the summit. During the 30 minute journey walkers, cyclists and many animals can be seen below. The quietness is broken onlywhen the gondalbabn goes over the pylon or by the various tones of the cow-bells as the cattle roam the mountain, apart from the excited voices from theyoung people in your car or those passing back down. The summit is an ideal place to picnic. Cattle and goats wander freely amongthe people affording great photo opportunities with the wonderful backdropsand the girls have chance to relax and enjoy the scenery, shop and the leisurearea.Moving on, a short walk takes us to the Cable Car down to the pretty skivillage of Wengen. This is a really steep descent in a cable-car that carries100 people accompanied by the screams of some of the occupants as itlaunches off the side of the mountain. The car-free village of -Wengenprovides further opportunity for the girls towander. visit the local shops and purchase postcards and small gifts to takehome and possibly visit one of the local cafes for refreshment. Our journey home is from Wengen station to Grindelwald.

Interlaken. Swimmint! and Swiss Folk Evenint!A day of three parts. Morning shopping and sightseeing in Interlaken, whichis a major resort in the Bernese Oberland, followed by an afternoon swiin inthe outdoor pool. This pool offers a fantastic view across a vast Green in thetown centre where paragliders are continually landing and the backdrop ofwhich are the snow-covered peaks of the Monch, Jungfrau and Eiger. The evening will be spent at a Swiss folk Evening in the Kursal, including atraditional Swiss meal for everybody whilst watching the show. Yodelling, coin spinning, Mountain Horn blowing, traditional country dancing, Swisswrestling, flag waving etc ate all demonstrated and in someitistances the girlsare given the opportunity to take part., fmally after a very long day it will bethe last train back to Grindlewald.

Grindiewaid (iocai)

The evenings and the rest of the time will be spent locally in and around thevillage of Grlndlewald. They wlllmclude a trip on the "FIrst" cableway a 6seater Gondalban in the middle of the village which carries you to a height of2168 metres up the mountainside to an area of hiking and footpaths throughmeadows full of wild flowers. There will be the opportunity to explore thevillage shops, visit the local sports-centre for ice-skating and a furtherswimming session, also the local crazy golf course. On one evening of our staythe village street is closed to all traffic and is filled by street entertainers, bands, food stalls, the local fire-brigade demonstrating fire safety, local craftstalls etc. At the top end of the village, where the road has a steep gradient, itis cordoned off and used for roller blade racing by the local adults andchildren. As the lodge we are staying in is in the heart of the village we areable to take advantage of the carnival atmosphere that exists and gives the girls

the opportunity to mix and talk with the local community.

You will see from the above that dufitig our stay hi Switzerlaiid we try to fitin as many varied trips as possible using all of the local forms of transportavailable. In addition to providing the girls with lasting memories they will have gainedgreater self reliance through being away from home, living with Guides fromother schools and backgrounds, meeting and chatting to other people fromaround the world who, because they are always wearing their Internationalneckerchiefs, are interested in who they are and where they are from, enhancing their cooking skills, working together, taking care of their ownproperty, exchanging their own travellers cheques and budgeting their pocketmoney (with adult supervision), as well as using and testing their Germanlanguage skills in the shops.Additionally, of course, for most of the girls it is a totally new experience frombeing in England and for a lot of them the first experience of being away fromhome. It is a great opportunity to see another way of life, egothe great pridethe Swiss take in the cleanliness of their towns and villages, their approach torecycling, the efficiency of their Transport networks, the way they cut and useevery blade of grass on the pastures and gardens etc (for use as winter feed). The stock-piles of logs alongside all of the Chalets in preparation for thewinter snow and the wonderful flowers that adorn the Chalets are always afascination to the girls.

I hope this will give you a general idea of this project. If you require anyfurther information please contact me.
