Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.

In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters.

The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff.

The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go.

The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

over and that there was more goals to come.

Both sides were unchanged at the break, and it was the Owls who kicked off the second half. It didn’t take long for the first chance which came just three minutes after the restart when Debnam stroked the ball just wide of the post following a Oglesby low cross.

Loughborough, on the other hand, started the half a bit slower, but fashioned a great move when Sam Minihan beat two Owls players, played it into the path of Alun Webb but his shot was blocked and dispersed safely.

The visitors kept plugging away as with just six minutes of the half gone, Sam Donney went close as he shot narrowly wide from 20 yards with Steer scrambling sidewards ensuring it would not of gone in.

The best chance of the opening 10 minutes fell to striker Jack Poxon for the visitors as he was played in with just Steer to bear but he could not finish from eight yards out as Steer smothered the ball well.

The Owls were having much more luck at the other end as they went and extended their lead. A flowing move involving Oglesby, Cooper, Emson and Debnam was cooly finished off by the latter in a goal that would not of been out of place at the Emirates.

The lead should of been extended just after the hour mark when a short corner was played to Flett but a block from a Loughborough player was spectacularly saved by their keeper to keep the scoreline respectable.

Loughborough, however did not read the script and pulled a goal back with just over 25 minutes to play. Kurtis Bevan skipped past a challenge on the left and drilled a shot past Steer at the near post giving the visitors some hope of a comeback.

The joy was short-lived though for the traveling fans. From an Oglesby corner from the left, the ball was knocked down into the path of Cooper who smashed the ball home with aplomb.

The Owls then made a triple substation brining on Jordan Boyington, Louis Grant, and Brody Robertson. Robertson should have scored with his f i r s t touch of the game however the ball eluded him at the far post following a deft low cross by Debnam which whistled past the far post.

Louis Grant thought he had the Owls fifth of the game but he hit the side netting after getting the better of his marker on the left hand side.

The Owls kept pressing and from a Loughborough corner, the ball broke to Flett who with the outside of his right boot play the ball forward to Robertson. He sprinted past his marker and squared the ball back to Flett, who had ran 50 yards for the one-two and duly dispatched the ball home for the fifth goal of the afternoon.

Loughborough did manage to g e t a n o t h e r goal back in the 85th minute as Alun Webb beat the offside trap and had the easiest of finishes as he round Steer and slotted home into the empty net.

The visitors should of closed the gap but missed two further chances as the game closed out. Firstly We b b m a d e S t e e r

produce another wonderful save to his right from close range. Then Bevan headed over in the final minute.

The referee blew his whistle moments later as the Owls secured their placed in the next round of the FA Vase. The missed chances will be rued by the visiting team however, the more clinical Owls will be more than happy with the win.

C l e e t h o r p e s To w n s a w o f f Loughborough Un iver s i ty th i s afternoon in the FA Vase Qualifying Round 5-2 at the Bradley Community Stadium. Captain Darren Hanslip opened the scoring after 11 minutes, then the lead was doubled when a Loughborough defender put through his own net. The Owls extended their lead 10 minutes into the second half, however the visitors got a goal back nine minutes later but Marc Cooper restored the three goal cushion two minutes later. The scoring was complete with goals from both side, one from Alex Flett then the visitors scored with just five minutes left.

The Owls started with just six of the same starting line-up as they did against Gresley just three days previous. Luke Mascall (unavailable), Lawrence Heward (injured), Brody Robertson (substitute), Louis Grant (substitute) were replace by Daniel Grant, Matthew Coleman, Jack Debnam, Nathan Emson and Darren Hanslip.

The game started with Loughborough kicking from right to left and it was the visitors who started the brighter. They were straight out the blocks and had it not being for Owls keeper Damian Steer

the Owls would of being a goal behind as a weak back header was pounced on by Jack Poxon who tried to bend the ball past Steer but his outstretched left hand managed to turn the ball around the post.

The pressure kept mounting on the Owls, as in just the third minute defender Elliot Legg spun with the ball inside the box but his shot cleared the bar with just Steer to beat.

At the other end, the Owls struggled to penetrate the opponents defence however a lovely move involving Hanslip,

Cooper and Debnam showed their intent for what was to come.

Even with Loughborough pushing men forward they could not capitalise on their chances and it was the Owls who took the lead against the run of play. The ball was played over from an Jonathan Oglesby corner and it fell kindly to Hanslip who smashed the ball

home past the defenseless Matthew Donvito in the Loughborough goal.

Just four minutes later, the lead was doubled. The ball fell to Cooper just inside the area and his shot, which was heading just wide of the goal was inadvertently put into his own net by a Loughborough defender.

The two goal cushion wasn’t enough for the Owls as they pressed forward looking to further add to the scoreline, but this was nearly their downfall as Kurtis Revan broke forward on the left, skipped past Danny Grant but his shot was just the wrong side of the post.

At the other end Emson and Debnam were linking well and when the latter dinked the ball in for the former, they should of been celebrating however Donvito produced a good save down to his right to deny a certain goal.

The remaining of the first half was battled in the midfield area where both sides struggled for any penetration. As the referee blew his whistle for the break, the Owls knew the game was not

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

GOOD afternoon and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadium for the visit of Carlton Town in the FA Cup...

Good afternoon and welcome back to the Bradley FDC.

Today see’s us continue our epic FA Cup run in what is turning out to be an eventful campaign.

Today we welcome Carlton Town from Nottingham who again ply their trade in the Evo Stik Division One South, the same leve l a s ou r previous opponents Gresley. So I am sure it will be just as tough.

Since our FA Cup run has s t a r t e d I h a v e b e e n inundated for interviews and the same question keeps be ing a sked about the financial rewards, whilst it is a very welcome amount of money it is not the reason we enter the competition. Our main aim is to get as far as we can and play against teams in higher leagues than ourselves. That way we can judge were we are as a club and what we need to do to improve this great football club.

Don't get me wrong the financial benefit is fantastic a n d a l l h e l p s t o t h e development of Cleethorpes Town but it is not our sole motivation.

I hope you a l l have a f a n t a s t i c d a y a n d w e continue our FA Cup run.

I t w a s a g o o d w i n Wedne sday w i t h f i v e changes against a good Penistone Church side. It just shows what great shape the senior section is in.

Todays visitors Carlton Town will be a tough task. They play in a league above us so it be will be a welcome distraction for them as their league form is poor at the moment.

However nothing is worse than a wounded animal so we need to be up for this and flying from the off.

We are most defiantly under dogs they are a very established team at Evo-Stick level.

Today we have Richard Peck missing at the heart of the defence after playing every

minute of the season so far so he will be a big miss. Also Luke Mascall is away but apart from that we are flying at the moment.

With the club fielding three senior teams on a weekend it's a credit to the club and all the hard work put in by Paul Bilham and Mark Barrett with the reserve

squad and Andy Cawte who came in this season running the A side.

That has helped push us on to the level we want to be at and so has everyone who helps behind the scenes.

CLEETHORPES TOWN ‘A’ Was With Mick Gibbons & Andy Cawte

A changed l ine up f rom the previous game against Barnoldby FC saw us take the 3 points away from Tetney Rovers FC on Saturday i n w h a t w a s a m u c h b e t t e r performance from a young Owls side against Tetney.

The Owls settled into the game well and from early on set about playing some great football . After a great build up which saw us move the ball from right to left before working the ball into the area where a Tetney defender heading the ball into his own net after pressure from Renzie Lobendhan.

Tetney equalised from a set piece when Tetney glanced a header past Grant Bailey in the Owls goal.

Pretty much straight from kick off the Owls took the lead again through James Sawdon who hit a sweet 25 yard left foot volley into the roof of the net. It was a great response from the setback a minute earlier.

The Owls went in 2-1 up at half time and deservedly so with us creating

some great chances with debutant Sam Walker looking lively up top linking with Lobendhan, Cameron Donson and Sawdon supporting from out wide.

Brad Mitchell and Tom Furnell were winning the battle in midfield and keeping the ball moving. Dale Pratt and Andy Allott at full back were looking solid and offering us a lot going forward with Tom Wingate and Josh Williams combining well at the heart of the back four in front of

Bailey. The second half saw us create more chances with Walker unlucky hitting the post and Sawdon forcing a save from the Keeper off the rebound.

Tetney then equalised after a great save from Bailey, a Tetney striker forced the ball over the line.

As we continued to press we got our reward with another well worked goal which fell to Lobendhan who showed great feet before slotting the ball home.

Bailey was forced into a couple of saves as the game went end too end with the Owls also having some chances to further our lead.

The final whistle was blown to end t h e g a m e 3 - 2 t o o t h e O w l s . Managers Andy Cawte and Mick Gibbons were delighted with the performance and reaction after the first game with a well deserved 3 points. “Again we played some quality football and also put the work-rate in to secure the win.”

Cleethorpes Town ‘A’ 2 North Somercoates FC 3Saturday 6th September 2014

A changed side vs last season seasons Champions North Somercoates saw us just come up short in a good game in which the lads showed great character after being 3-0 down .

The first half saw us spurn a few chances and the Owls went in 2-0 down at half time. The Owls didn’t seem to settle very well and 2 soft goals saw us face an uphill task in the second half.

It didn’t help after Somercoates went 3-0 up shortly after half time. This finally seemed to wake the Owls up and they started to play football and create a couple of half chances until Tom Furnell scored a cracking 25 yard drive to give them hope.

They continued to press and created a couple of other chances with one earning us a corner. From the resulting corner Tom Wingate challenged the Somercoates who could only help the ball into the net.

3-2 and with their tails up they pressed for an equaliser but despite their best efforts they didn’t quite manage it.

A quality second half against a very good Somercoates side is certainly a plus point too build on with another four lads making their debuts including two lads from the Under 18's, Paul Blow and Will Dyas who both impressed throughout.

Their next game is against Barnoldby FC, in the return fixture from the opening day of the season ,at The Linden Club with a 2:30pm kick off.

VISITING TEAM

The Club was founded in 1904 under the name of Sneinton FC and for much of the 20th century played its football in the local leagues of Nottinghamshire.

The Club led somewhat of a nomadic existence, playing at various grounds, and only settled at its current location of Stoke Lane, Gedling, in the early 1990s. This move coincided with the ambition from within the Club to progress beyond the confines of local parks football and the Club took the bold step of joining the Central Midlands Football League for the 1995-96 season, a move previously undertaken by only two other Nottingham parks sides. It is perhaps from this point that the modern-day Carlton Town FC really started to take shape.

In 2002 the Club changed its name to Carlton Town and in that first season under their new name they won the CML Supreme

Division title by one point from Sutton Town, clinching the championship with a last day 3-1 win against Holbrook. As a result, the Club were promoted to the First Division of the NCEL.

Three years were spent in this division, during which the Millers improved year on year, missing promotion in 2004-05 by just two points. However, on 23 October 2004, Club President Bill Stokeld passed away, collapsing whilst watching Carlton. Bill had been involved with the Club for over 50 years and a player, secretary, chairman and president and without his financial assistance and sheer effort, the Club simply wouldn't exist today. It is fitting that his name lives on through the name of the stadium itself.

As the Club prepared for life in the Premier Division of the NCEL, the building of a new road through the site of the old pitch meant

that the Club couldn't play at home for the first month of the 2006-07 season. The ground was moved to a site adjacent to the road and despite the disruption, the Club enjoyed an excellent season, always being near the top of the table. The Club were also aware of the fact that the FA was planning to expand step four of the National League System, the step immediately above the one they were currently in.

The Millers finished a creditable tenth in their first season at this higher level, and went even better in 2008-09, never being out of the play-off positions and eventually finishing in fourth place. This led to a play-off semi-final at Stocksbridge Park Steels where Carlton recovered a 2-0 half time deficit to be level at 2-2 within 10 minutes of the restart. However, the Yorkshiremen were too strong and eventually ran out 5-2 winners before themselves sealing promotion with a play-off final win at Belper Town.

Nevertheless, with most Millers fans expecting no more than a relegation battle, McJannet's side got off to a wonderful start to the season, winning 12 of the opening 15 league fixtures and briefly topping the table in November. A poor run of form in January and February saw Carlton drop out of the play-off places and although the side rallied late on with some impressive results, they eventually finished just outside the play-offs, in a creditable eighth place.

The club was unable to maintain that level of form throughout 2012-13 and an inconsistent league campaign eventually saw a 12th placed finish. However, the cups brought tangible success. Carlton made it through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time in the club's history before bowing out to ex-Football League side Bradford (Park Avenue).

That was only the precursor to McJannet bringing home the Millers' first silverware in

seven years as Carlton won the Notts Senior Cup for the first time ever, with a 5-2 win over the manager's former side Sutton Town in the final. And that despite having to play centre-half Grant Brindley in goal due to an injury crisis!

The Millers made a great start to 2013-14, winning their opening five matches without conceding a goal. However, McJannet struggled to put out a settled side and results suffered, with Carlton eventually finishing tenth in the table. Once again, the team save its best performances for the cup competitions, with another third qualifying round appearance in the FA Cup and a best-ever semi-final showing in the League Cup in a run which saw Carlton beat three Premier Division sides including a memorable quarter-final win at home to FC United of Manchester. The Millers also retained the Notts Senior Cup in some style, beating Rainworth MW 6-2 in the final.

“Getting the players motivated for a match is one of my roles on a matchday. I am just l ike Mr. Motivator from GMTV...”

FACT FILE:

Matthew, how did you get into managing? I first got into management when David Smith asked me to help him at Grimsby Borough.

Did you used to play, and at what position?I played from being a young lad and I usually played in centre mid or centre forward. I have been known to play in goal but that was towards the very end of my career.

How was the transition between playing and managing?I found the transition quite easy really. I had a lot off knee trouble so stopping playing was easy. Not having to get up in the morning in pain is always nice.

You were joint managers with the reserve side during the 2012-13 campaign, did you enjoy this and what did you get out of it?It was great being manager with Dave we both have different qualities but I think it's worked well and found working with the players a joy.

Was there a big change between the reserve and 1st team?No not really, players are players at any level. You just need to find out what makes them click and what motivates them.

How is working with Marcus? Does he let you express yourself and ideas?Working with "The General" is great. When he first asked me and Dave to step up and run the first team with him we didn't hesitate. Marco likes to step back and observe and

oversee everything so when he talks the lads listen.

Why do you think we was so successful last season?Last season was like anything. Hard work and the togetherness of the squad got us results.

Winning the league must of been great, tell me about the emotions you went through? We have a very talented group and teamed with attitude and work rate we got the result we wanted...CHAMPIONS! It was strange winning the league how we did really. I can remember being sat at home with a beer one night and results went our way and we got promoted. Then the next night we are champions...crazy crazy season.

Marcus has had a successful time as the 'gaffer', why do you think this is?Marcus is very good at what he does and has got a good management team helping him. He sets high standards in everything we do and that has rubbed off on the whole squad.

What are you thoughts on the season so far? This season will be a learning curve for us and a top half finish would be fantastic for us.

Lastly, tell us about your favourite game you've managed so far for the Owls?I enjoy every game we manage. It's a joy to work with the lads and to achieve what we do as a squad.By Craig Kendall
