Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.

In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters.

The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff.

The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go.

The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

16 JACK BARLOW Former Tiger in formidable form

bottom corner of the net, sparking scenes of jubilation.

The game seemed to settle down after the two goals and it become a battle of the midfield as both sides looked to penetrate the water tight defences. It was not until the 28th minute when a long ball by Peck caused serious problems problems for the hosts but the ball was just too strong for Barlow to latch onto it as Dunne came rushing out of goal to gather the ball.

An amusing moment came just four minutes later when the referee shouted “Great tackle no.6” to Radcliffe’s Chris Marshall for only ten seconds later to be booking him for a similar challenge where he appeared to win the ball from Richardson. Radcliffe’s Sam Adams tried to get the hosts back into the game in the 35th minutes when he tried a speculative overhead kick from eight yards out but it went wide of the mark.

Just before the break though, the Owls extended their lead as Barlow once again was on hand to scored. This time, there was a scramble inside the box involving several players from both sides but the ball broke loose to Barlow who dispatch his finish with aplomb. The half-time whistle came moments later but not before another chance went begging for the Owls as a good low cross came in from the right from Oglesby only for Adams to slice his clearance straight into Dunne’s arms.

The second half started with a flurry of chances for both sides. Firstly, the Owls forced a corner within 10 seconds of the restart which was swung in to the back post but Robertson could only poke wide

his chance. Then Radcliffe’s Kenneth Reeves missed a glorious chance to get the hosts back into the game as he beat Peck in the channel but missed with target with only Beattie to beat.

At the other end Oglesby could only skew a half-volley wide of the mark after a delightful pinpoint cross from Barlow. Only seconds later and the Owls really should of extended their lead. Firstly, Peck headed against the crossbar and from the follow up, Heward smashed an effort against the post from 12 yards. The break through did come in t h e 6 2 n d m i n u t e w h e n Richardson stroke the ball home passed Dunne into the corner of the net from just outside the box to put the game beyond any doubt. The lead should of been extended even further but Oglesby’s long range shot was just inches wide of the mark, and then Cooper saw a header effort cleared off the line in the 73rd minute.

A glorious chance fell to Barlow thought with just 15 minutes on the clock remaining. Robertson sprinted down the wing and his cross was wonderful. It was played inbetween the defensive line and the goalkeeper and the onrushing Barlow beat Winch to the ball but could only fire wide of the mark with the goal at his mercy. Wi th 12 m inu te s remaining, Radcliffe did pull a goal back, thanks to substitute

Robbie Williams. A thunderous free kick was fired at Beattie’s goal, he could watch as the ball came back off the cross bar and into the path of Williams who had the easiest of finishes.

The scoring was not over though as just three minutes later, Richardson had his

second of the game as he once again beat the keeper with a shot from just outside the area, in a move very similar to his first. As the game ticked just into injury time, Richardson did indeed finish off his hat-trick as Oglesby played a square ball across to Richardson who had an easy tap in to complete the rout for the Owls in a convincing win after a small string of defeats.

THE CONTENTS

Cleethorpes Town returned to winning ways on Saturday with a thumping 6-1 win over Radcliffe Olympic in the FA Vase. A hat-trick from Jack Richardson, a brace from Jack Barlow and one from Captain Darren Hanslip was enough to book their place into the next round of the drawn.

Marcus Newell made four changes to the starting line-up following their midweek 4-2 loss to Pickering Town. Daniel Grant, Lawrence heward, Richardson and Louis Grant where all recalled to the squad in hope of cup success. Marc Cooper and Alex Flett where dropped to the bench from the starting 11 last time out.

The game started off at a frantic pace, with Robertson nearly scoring within the opening 30 seconds. Oglesby made a darting run down the wing but his cross just evaded the advancing striker as the ball skimmed along the ground just five yards from goal.Just three minutes later, right-back Luke Mascall thought he would try his luck, but his 20 yard effort from just outside

the box was wide of the mark.

The good start from the Owls continued as they looked to open the scoring early doors. Barlow collected the ball just outside the area in the fifth minute, he turned his marker but his goal-bound shot was blocked byPaul Durham i n t h e R a d c l i f f e defensive line.

A t t h e o t h e r e n d Radcliffe had struggled during the opening encounters however

they would of taken the lead had it not been for a brilliant Heward block from a Jack Smith close range shot. The hosts came even closer 90 seconds later as Chris Marshall unleashed a rasping drive from 25 yards out which swerved in the air and rattle Brad

Beattie's left hand post with him fully out-stretched.

The Owls did not let the pressure get to them as they went up the other end and nearly scored. The ball fell to Richardson but his right footed shot was blocked and it went out for a corner. Oglesby played the ball in, it was cleared back to him by a defender, the ball was then lofted to the back post where Richard Peck was waiting in space but his header was wide of the mark from point blank range. It was not long though until the Owls did break the deadlock. Oglesby found space on the left hand side and whipped in a delicious cross for Captain Hanslip to thunder a long range header home past the helpless Hadlee Dunne.

The traveling support had barely enough time to sit down when they where back up on their feet again celebrating as just two minutes later the ball was in the back of the net. This time it was Barlow who unleashed a left footed shot under the legs of Sam Winch and into the

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

GOOD afternoon and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadium for the visit of Glasshoughton Welfare in the NCEL Premier Division...

The last couple of weeks have been

very busy for the club, both on and

off the pitch. We have played three

away games on the trot so it is nice

to be at home once again even

though as I look out the window

typing this, it looks very gloomy. Lets

hope the weather brightens up for

this afternoons game.

Firstly, we travelled to Radcliffe two

weeks ago in the FA Vase and

dispatched the Nottinghamshire side

6-1 then we went to Retford on the

Tuesday night and won 3-0 thanks to

a hat-trick from Marc Cooper. Lastly,

last weekend we travelled to

Wakefield and comfortably, in the

end, beat Nostell Miners Welfare 5-1.

Having won our last three matches

all by three or more goals it seems

like the Owls are having an easy time

of it. This is far from the case

though, each game in this league is

very difficult and I would like to

thank each and every fan, both home

and away, you travel in your dozens

and it really gives the players a big

boost.

Today we have offered Grimsby Town

season ticket holders and GTFC Trust

members the chance to attend for a

reduced entry price. This offer also

stands for Wednesday games against

Garforth Town.

For our FA Vase game away at

Southam in two weeks time, there

will be FREE coach travel, but spaces

are VERY limited. If you wish to add

your name to the list then please do

so. The list is behind the bar at the

true home of Cleethorpes Town

Football Club, the Linden Homes

Club, Clee Road.

Once again, thank you for your

continued support, and hope to see

you back here on Wednesday.

Last Saturday we travelled

to Wakef ie ld to face

Nostell Miners Welfare and

in the end it was a good

w i n . We a r e q u i c k l y

finding out that no team in

this league is going to be a

push over so we need to

start managing the games

better from the off. Also

we need to be working

teams all over the pitch.

T o d a y s v i s i t o r s ,

Glasshoughton, are a very

good side who will be

looking to build on a

decent start to their

season.

To sum up our season so

far, I would have to say

that we gave started great

and are learning fast what

this league is all about.

We are looking to finish in

the top half and establish

the club in the NCEL

more than that would be

fantastic.

Finally the First Team

would like to wish Alex

Oglesby a belated 18th

wish him all the best.

Mansfield Hosiery Mills 6Cleethorpes Town Ladies 0Sunday 21st September 2014 After losing a player the morning of the game to sickness and another one to sickness in the warm-up it was time to face Mansfield with only 10 players.

The game started with a quick rush from Mansfield and they opened the scoring early on with a through ball. Mansfield kept the pressure on and another through ball saw the Mansfield striker one on one with keeper Kassie Wallis and a brilliant save with her foot kept the score at 1-0.

Mansfield used the extra player to their advantage and crossed the ball in only to be turned into the net with an own goal from Gemma Wardle. Gemma Charlton made a couple of individual runs into the opposing penalty area, but the keeper was in the right place at the right time and prevented any goals.

Mansfield then played another through ball and again Kassie Wallis made another great save to keep the score down.

Cleethorpes played a couple of over the top balls which left the Mansfield defence only to be ruled offside. Just before half

time Mansfield let go a stunning strike from the edge of the area i n t o t h e t o p c o r n e r a n unstoppable shot, 3-0.

Half time came and it was a case of stick or twist. With another Mansfield goal soon after half time, the mountain was too big too climb and a Mansfield cross from the right saw it go across the goal mouth for a tap in. The game was then finished by another stunning goal by a Mansfield winger from outside the area into the top corner. Game finished 6-0.

VISITING TEAM

The club was formed in 1964 as a works outfit, Anson Sports. Initially the club plied its trade on a variety of park pitches and competed in the Castleford Sunday League.

A change to Saturday football and entry to the West Yorkshire League saw the policy of playing only company employees s c rapped. However, lack of a regular home ground prevented further success until in 1974 an approach was made by the Glasshoughton Colliery to adopt the name of the Col l iery Welfares disbanded club and play on the Leeds Road ground. This enabled the move in to senior football and entry in to the West Yorkshire League and ultimately the Yorkshire League and currently the Northern Counties Football East League.

The retirement of almost all the Committee in 2007 threatened the Club’s existence, but funding and publicity raised by the involvement of former Liverpool goalkeeping legend Bruce Grobbelaar ensured the club were able to able to take their place in the Northern Counties East Premier Div. for the 2007/08 season.

However, the need to appoint 3 Managers in as many months saw the club make a poor start to the season from which they never recovered.

Despite a good pre-season which led to an optimistic outlook, the club continued to struggle to adjust to life in the new division and despite a total of 3 managers at the helm endured a torrid season and despite some

creditable performances against some of the top sided, a lack of experience was again the teams downfall, which resulted in a second successive bottom place finish.

Fortunately the Club remained in the First Div. for the 2009/2010 season, but another poor start saw the Committee turn to former Harrogate Railway Assistant manager Stuart Waddington who turned the Club’s fortunes round and saw them climb from bottom of the division in September to a very respectable and comfortable 13th place come the end of the season.

This gave the club a very optimistic outlook for the new season, but only three weeks from the start Stuart Waddington resigned for personal

reasons. Prompt action by the Committee saw former Glasshoughton players Craig Elliot and Paul Mattison appointed as the new management team within a week and they worked extremely hard to bring the club up to a standard capable of competing in what was a very strong division. Their efforts were rewarded with a very creditable 7th place finish in the league table and the club won its first silverware since 1998 when they lifted the Wilkinson Sword Trophy.

Building on that success, the club enjoyed a memorable season in 2 0 1 1 / 1 2 w h e r e t h e y a c h i e v e d promotion to the Premier Div. with a last day victory at Emley. Always in the promotion frame for the major part of the season, it seemed their hopes had been dashed when Emley took a 2-0 lead midway through the second half .

However the team battled back and secured a 3-2 win with almost the last kick of the game to seal promotion back to the Premier Div. after an absence of four years. Unfortunately, the lure of managing at a higher level saw manager Elliott leave the club to manage at Evostik Premier Div. Club Ossett Town.

The Club moved quickly to fill the managerial vacancy and from some very impressive applicants former Yorks. Ams. and Selby Town boss Graham Hodder was appointed to continue the building of the club on the field in to a competitive outfit. Since then the club has been managed by former Harrogate Railway player Rob Hunter at a time when the club were awarded Charter Standard, the reins currently being held by former Reserve Team Manager John Miles and assistant Mark Kellett.

“ I j u s t w a n t e d t o p l a y football c lose to home and enjoy it again and fal l In love with playing again...”

www.cleethorpestownfc.co.ukThe Owl 20

FACT FILE:

Jack, you played 6 times so far this season, netting on four occasions, has it been a dream start for you?

Yes it's been great to be back playing games but I didn't win in my first 3 matches even though id scored a few goals so wasn't exactly a dream start but I was pleased with my own performances but would always rather take a win and play bad.

Do you like to train or do you prefer to be on the pitch kicking a ball about? How does work effect your training?

I obviously love training but there's no better feeling that playing a game and winning and scoring. On the night games after been up from 6:30 in the morning is clearly going to effect you but that's life!l

So, take me back to the beginning, how did you first get into football?

I'm not really sure, when I was 10/11 years old I lived near Lindsay School field and on a morning I was there playing on my own and a few of my school mates happened to be there so I joined in and then begun playing for them the week later.

You joined CTFC in September Boston United, how was the transition between the clubs?

I thought at Boston the lads was great and the spirit was good around the team but then when I come here it's 10 times better. I love knowing that when we've got a game, all the lads are gonna be back together and that it's great banter and everyone is close mates.

Who did you make your debut against for The Owls and how did you find it? Which one of your goals has been your favourite so far?

My first game was away at Worksop and it's my first competitive start for I’d say at least a year and the goal i scored was probably the best I've ever have!

Marcus has had a successful time as the 'gaffer', why do you think this is?

I've only been working under him a few weeks and I love it. I think it's because we're all a group which are also close to the coaching staff and I think because of that it makes you want to work for them that little bit more!

What can we expect from The Owls this season, mid-table? Top 6? Promotion?

Erm...I always tell myself we can win every game and with this squad it's up to us, so I'm saying promotion! Definitely top 6 if not.

You signed for Hull City for a six-figure when you was just 15, how did the move come about and how did you feel at the time? Your move to Hull didn’t really manifest into anything more than a place in the Reserve Team, did you feel let down by the system that was in place there?

My move to hull was obviously something I'm proud of and I maybe didn't give my all at times there so it's my own fault but I don't regret anything I've ever done. It's just different to every other club I've been at, as in the people are intimidated by some of the staff there but that's my opinion and in the big world means nothing.

Lastly, what made you want to move back “home” to Cleethorpes following your move to Boston United in the summer?

There's nothing better than playing for your home town club because everyone knows everyone in Cleethorpes and most the other clubs I've played for have been at least am hour away but not I'm working and playing football enjoying myself I couldn't ask for much more, and I'm certain we will be one of the bigger clubs in the Lincolnshire area very soon.
