Classrooms in the Spotlight Mr. Peterson’s 4th Grade Happenings As we enter the last few weeks of school, the 4th Graders in my room have been very active with their learning. Collaboration continues to be a driving force within our room, as well as thinking critically and
learning from our mistakes. We continue to make progress in self-control, organization, and being leaders amongst each other. One of the true “Greatness” qualities that has emerged within our room is CELEBRATING OTHERS’ SUCCESSES!! Here are a few of the “Happenings” from the past few weeks: Science: We have finished our “Planet Projects”. The students used various research techniques to acquire information for a specific planet, as well as creating a poster-board full of pictures and information. Math: The students have been working on multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers, while using an “Area Model”. Also, they have been dividing up to 4 digit dividends. They are making great strides with different methods of instruction, while being able to see that there are many ways to attain an acceptable answer. Social Studies: Our studies of ND continue, while looking at American Indians of ND. The students have really been engaged while learning about cultures, homes, family roles, and reservations. Upcoming SS Project: The students will be creating a traditional “American Indian” home as part of their project coming up shortly. I am super excited to see more creativity from the children. **Lastly, as the school year comes close to ending, I want to remind everyone that education is a choice! We must continue to support and strengthen our relationships with one another, so success is our only option. Let’s finish STRONG!! “Go Raiders”
Mr. Beach—PE Roosevelt Raiders 2nd - 5th graders participated in an awesome two week skating unit sponsored by our wonderful Raider parents. It was fun for all who participated and will be part of the PE curriculum again next year.

Classrooms in the Spotlight Miss Grehl & Mrs. Carlson’s Second Grade
Over the past month, both second grade classes participated in their annual penguin project. Students get to choose one of the many types of penguin spe-
cies and conduct research on the penguin that they choose. The students work in pairs to research the penguin species of their choice and learn facts about that penguin. After conducting research, students write a research report that tells about their penguin. They get to apply the typing skills that we have been learning to type up their report. After their report is done, students get to apply math measurement skills and draw a model of their penguin. Students use the research information to create a model penguin that is just the right size. At the end of the project, students present their reports and penguin models to the class. Students learn information about the other types of penguins through these penguin reports. Our classes really enjoyed learning about the various species of penguins and the similarities and differences between them.

Principal’s Corner
Dear Roosevelt Raider Families:
As the school year comes to a close, our minds and hearts are filled to the brim. It’s been a great year! What a terrific school! Together we’ve learned much and shared experiences that will long remain with us in the years to come. The strength of our community and wholehearted passion to make our school a wonderful place of learning for our children primarily but for all of us makes Roosevelt truly a special place.
To those of you who are leaving us for new places and new adventures, we wish you all the best. Congratulations to a wonderful group of 5th graders as you move on to 6th grade at JMS. Remember to show your Greatness!!!
Well wishes and saddened hearts, as Mrs. Gehlhar, Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wallace are retir-ing. We want to thank-you for your love and service you have provided to the children of Jamestown Public Schools. Together they have provided 98 years of changing children’s lives. That is pretty amazing. They have been a gift to many and will undoubtedly be missed. Happy Retirement Gals!!!

Tips for a Successful Summer!
1. Make a schedule. Our sessions are often more successful when our children have a visual to
help them transition from one activity to the next. You can do this as well by writing out a list
of the daily “to do’s,” or a visual schedule with photos or cartoons of the daily activities. You
may want to have your child cross off each completed item, or move the picture icon from a
“to do” to “all done” side of the schedule.
2. Decide how much time you are comfortable with your child having electronics and put it
on the schedule. If you feel like 30 minutes is appropriate for iPad time then write it out so
there are clear expectations on the schedule (e.g. “Computer games—20 minutes”). Since our
students often respond well to structure, a clear beginning and end time for these preferred
activities can make the transition smoother. A timer that your child can hear, or even a visual
timer (available as an app on a phone or tablet) could be a good way to signal the change in
activity. Additionally, use can use these activities as reinforcers by placing them on the
schedule directly after a less preferred activity (i.e. “first clean-up then iPad”).
3. Incorporate things your child can do independently onto the schedule. If you’re child loves
to play legos or look at comics, then put this on the schedule as well (also set a timer). Breaks
and vacation days are a great opportunity for children to build up these independent leisure
skills, so that they can keep themselves engaged with these activities for increased durations.
4. Get outside! Whether it’s a walk to the park, a lawn game, or even helping out with chores—
some fresh air will do everyone good, and it’s a great way to break up the day. Going for a
walk is a great way to practice safety skills in the community (stopping and waiting, crossing
the street, etc.), and the children can practice social interactions as well. If there is a preferred
community outing that your child really likes (the park, a certain store), again, use this as a
reinforcer by placing it directly after a more difficult task on their schedule.
5. Arts and Crafts. There are plenty of websites nowadays that can help you to derive some
activities out of what you have in your house. Make a collage out of magazine clippings or
make homemade play doh! There are tons of different sensory activities you can explore
using household ingredients, such as slime, gak, moon sand, and much more! Use this as an
opportunity to practice the fine motor skills your child has learned in school. Additionally,
you may discover your children really enjoy the sensory input from the different materials.
