Sometimes things can be in more than one group
How would you classify these organisms?
Frog Gorilla Snake Bluebird Giraffe Lion
Zebra Horse Dog Fish Cat Iguana Mosquito
Why do things need to be classified?
-To find them -create organization -They are easier to study
How would you classify automobiles?Automobiles
Trucks, cars, vans 2 door, 4 door, 5 door
Price Standard shift, stick shift
Why do scientists classify organisms?
It is easier to study living things if they are grouped according to similarities
Terms to know:Taxonomy- hierarchy of levels of
classificationTaxa- categories of classification Binomial nomenclature- 2 part naming
system of classification
Summary
Explain how & why organisms areclassified.
Organisms are classified into groups called taxa according to what they have in common. This makes them easier to
study.
Review of key terms: Taxonomy?
Taxa? Binomial Nomenclature?
Who was the 1st to classify organisms?Aristotle- 4th century B.C.
Created three groups for animals & two groups for plants
How were animals classified?Three main groups according to movement --- 1. Fly 2. Swim 3.Walk or crawl
Two groups for plants based on structure & size
How did classification expand?
1750’s Carolus Linnaeus put organisms into groups based on observable features
-Created binomial nomenclature
How does binomial nomenclature work?
Consists of a 2 part naming system genus- group in which organism belongs species- specific name for organism
ONLY ORGANISMS OF THE SAME SPECIES CAN MATE TO PRODUCE FERTILE OFFSPRING
Why do scientist use Latin to name organisms?
Latin is a universal language to all scientists & therefore names will not be confused (no translating!!)
How does binomial nomenclature work? Example ----Cats GENUS – Felis Wildcat-(genus-species) Felis sylvestris Housecat- Felis domesticus Cougar- Felis concolor
Example – Oak tree GENUS- Quercus
Red oak – Quercus rubra White oak- Quercus alba
