    Hey all,

For one of my college music history courses I have to write a report on Classical trumpet (1730-1820) and

how it changed from Baroque to Classical and Classical into Romantic. I was wondering if anybody had any

book or website suggestions for where I could go for my research. Specifically I'd like to find examples of

era-repertoire in both a solo and ensemble setting, as well as changes in construction.

    Thanks for any help!

    Lots of Baroque solo repertoire.

SomeClassicalera solo repertoire(Hummel, Haydn, Nerude - sort of, M Haydn)

Virtually no Romantic era solo repertoire (Bohme and....)

That's always made mesad. It's my favorite period stylistically. It's perhaps the golden era for Concertos

for instruments, and my own instrument has basically nothing to show for it. Alas.

    The Trumpet by Edward Tarr.

I havent read it myself (still thinking about it!)

but I believe it could contain some good info for you.

    Good Luck!

Let's remember that the instrument Weidinger used for Haydn and Hummel was hardly the instrument tha

we use today. By the time we got to Romantic period a lot of people (though, perhaps not the more major

composers we think of in orchestral music) were writing solo pieces for piston cornet rather than trumpet,

which was infinitely more versatile than the orchestral trumpets of the day.

It's an interesting period and you could write a lot about how the changes in the instrument to improve

intonation and flexibility dictated the repertoire. If you look into Hainlein and the Nuremburg (1600's)

trumpet makers and then Bull (~1710) you will see some subtle changes in the instrument during that

time. However, it remained basically the same "technology." Then you have the English slide trumpet, whic

was used as early as 1695 and which the Harpers, father and son, made the go-to instrument in 19thcentury England. Since it solved the problems the natural trumpet had with intonation, it is hard to explain

why it disappeared. Perhaps harder to play than the valved horns which later replaced it. Then there is the

keyed trumpet for which Hummel wrote his concerto and the idiomatic trills in that work which are best

played on the keyed trumpet. This instrument had a rather limited life, and, as another poster said, was

supplanted by the cornet a pistons, and later the valved trumpet.

You may be able to find some clips of Crispian Steele-Perkins playing some of these instruments on his

recordings. The issue of authenticity and what trumpets we play this repertoire on now would merit some

discussion. You could continue this to a discussion of cornets and trumpets and the changes in them during
