(see Lesson # 6) b) Why is it important to chose an appropriate reporting verb? (see Lesson # 6) Exercise 1 Look at the following pairs of sentences and say why the second sentence is better. a) He said he was the king. He declared he was the king. b) She told us she was cold. She complained she was cold. c) She said she had stolen the money. She admitted she had stolen the money. Look below at the sentences which show a) the reported speech and b) what the person actually said. a) They promised they would come back early. b) “We’ll come back early”. a) They warned us not to trust the king. b) “Don’t trust the king!”. a) They insisted we should have tea. b) “Do have some tea!” (The reporting verbs are underlined.) Exercise 2 Here are some examples of reported speech. See if you can write down what the person actually said, using speech marks like in the examples given above. a) She advised us to take the longer route. b) He explained he’d lost his keys and so couldn’t get in. c) She reminded me to buy milk. d) The banker suggested we should open a savings account. e) The park keeper confirmed we could go in. Exercise 1 Look at the following pairs of sentences and say why the second sentence is better.
