PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

On Monday 3rd April, the Minister for Education, Hon

Susan Close MP, visited Clare High School. She was

welcomed by our Head Prefects, Travis Kuchel and

Etabez Donato, who were our hosts for the afternoon.

The School band performed on the front steps on her

arrival before the Minister and her entourage moved

down to see the site for the new STEM development.

She embraced the opportunity to visit the Learning

Centre and the Agricultural Program before catching up

with the Year 12 Society class. We were able to talk

openly about the extensive curriculum offerings we

have at Clare High School, the collaborative work

around transition that is supported across our

Partnership, and the successful inclusion of Year 7s

into a Secondary site. With the support of the Year 12

Food and Hospitality class, a small gift basket,

containing home-made sweets, was presented to the

Minister before she departed. This was a terrific

opportunity to showcase Clare High School, our

dedicated staff and wonderful students.

The Year 12 Formal was held on Saturday evening.

Thank you to Mrs Rowe and the Formal committee for

all their organisation of this event. The use of Mr Micks’

front garden for the student photos was a huge

success and to have a couple of familiar faces, Mr

Walker and Lachie Smith as the chief photographers,

made for some spectacular shots! All students and

their partners dressed to impress, looking glamorous

and handsome! It was obvious a good time was being

CANTEEN NEWSCANTEEN NEWSCANTEEN NEWSCANTEEN NEWS

Thank you to the following people for their

support for the canteen and for donating

produce:

Shannon Robinson & Diedre Earle for

volunteering and for produce donation.

Clay Reid for produce.

If you have some time or produce you can

donate to the canteen, we would love to

have it. Thank you.

The canteen staff

had by the large number of attendees up on the

dance floor throughout the evening.

Congratulations to all involved!

It is an opportune time to remind everyone of the

importance of attendance. We know that there is

a direct positive correlation between attendance

and student achievement. Our school target is to

have all students achieve 95% attendance in

2017. That equates to attending all but 10 days

across the year. Unfortunately there are a

number of students who have already missed 10

or more days within Term 1. I can only

encourage parents and carers to support your

child’s opportunity to improve their learning and

life outcomes by maximising their attendance

over the next three terms. Please contact your

child’s roll class teacher, Year Level Coordinator

or a member of the Leadership team for support

if you require.

Clare High School was once again successful at

the Lower North Athletics Carnival a couple of

weeks ago. The CHS Athletics team travels to

Adelaide next week to compete at SANTOS

stadium in the Secondary Schools’ Athletics

competition. Wishing everyone all the best!

Medication Procedure:

Included in this week’s newsletter is a copy of

the Medication Guidelines (Draft) for 2017 and a

Medication Authority form for your information.

Please read the document carefully and make

contact with the school to discuss your child’s

needs if they are required to administer

medication either temporarily or as part of an

ongoing plan.

Australian Curriculum (AC) – Assessment

and Reporting:

Included in this week’s newsletter is a parent

information document that explains the DECD

expectations and requirements in reporting your

child’s academic achievements against the AC

Achievement Standards for Years 7 to 10.

Although there will be a written report for Year

12s sent home in week 11, all other year levels

will receive a written report at the end of

Semester 1 (Term 2, week 10) and Semester 2

(Term 4, week 9).

Have a great holiday break, and enjoy time with

family and friends!

Trinity Interschool Gymkhana

Trinity Interschool Gymkhana was held on Friday the 24th of February. Clare High School

had two representatives competing: Savannah Gilbert and Phoebe Seneca. Both girls

had good results and out of 39 schools Clare High finished 8th overall. A huge

congratulations go to both girls who demonstrated the school values, good sportsmanship

and of course rode well. We are looking forward to next year and hoping to get more

equestrians involved.

We would also like to mention St Joseph’s Clare and Blyth Primary who had

representatives competing well.

Dealing with Pressure – or the perception of pressure

Could you walk the length of a 10 metre bench that is 50cm wide without falling off? Of course. So could

you still walk across that same bench if it was all that linked two skyscrapers? For most of us the answer

would be no way. Why not? If the day wasn’t windy, surely it should be the same thing...

If you had the ability to unlock the mind in that way, then sportspeople, students with exams, job

applicants going for interviews etc would be knocking your door down. When I am teaching PE and

students are working on skills I often hear a student say to me, I was doing it perfectly until you started

watching. Somehow pressure or even the perception of pressure makes an enormous difference to an

activity. So in fact completing the same task, with or without pressure is not the same task at all. Is there a

way to chase away these anxious thoughts that prevent us from performing to our potential?

There are many different strategies. Here are a few suggestions.

Reframe pressure – I’m nervous about this test. That’s good because I always concentrate harder when

I’m nervous.

Reduce external pressure – Don’t put pressure on yourself (what’s the worst that can happen?), or take

on someone else’s nervousness. Surround yourself with calm influences.

Listen to your body – Feel the increased heart rate, the butterflies, observe them, realise what they mean,

note that your body is alert and ready. But breathe slowly and stay in control.

Welcome opportunities to practise dealing with pressure. Replicate the situation that makes you nervous

and face it.

Have a routine that gives you confidence. So when you are under pressure, just keep to your well

practised routine that takes minimal mental effort.

Worth a try
