Rethink Your Drink
We are continuing to offer bottled water for students to top off their water bottles throughout the day. Be sure to wash your child’s water bot-tle often with hot, soapy water.
We will be experimenting with infused water. Students will have access to such things as fruits, veggies, herbs, and even flowers to add to their wa-ter. Infused water recipes make getting your daily hydration a breeze and is a great option instead of sugary drinks.
Milk is offered everyday at school. Milk helps your child get enough pro-tein, calcium and Vitamin D.
100% fruit juice has vitamins and minerals, but is high in natural sugars. Kids who drink too much juice may not be hungry to eat healthy meals and snacks and may be at a higher risk for weight gain. Kids should eat their fruit rather than drink it! Limit juice to ½ cup (125) ml per day. Choose drinks labelled 100% fruit juice. Products call “drink”, “punch”, “-ade”, “beverage” or “cocktail” have added sugar and little or no fruit juice.
Consider these 3 things when choosing a drink: Quench Your Thirst
If you have been active or are very thirsty choose a hydrating drink like water. Build Strong Teeth Choose a drink low in sugar and better for your teeth, like milk or water. Fuel Your Body
If you are hungry or missed a snack choose a drink high in vitamins and minerals like milk. - Vitamin water is not recommended for children and youth.
- Energy drinks are high in sugar and caffeine. Energy drinks are not intended for children and youth. Do not give them to kids of any age.
- Sports drinks are made to replace water and minerals lost in sweat. These drinks may be helpful for athletes during intense activities that last more than 1 hour. These drinks are high in sugar and should not be used outside of activity.

Through the Cougar Passport program, students are presented with different challenges each month. Students are
divided up into teams and each team has a staff leader. Teams meet each week, Wednesday morning, at snack
time. The challenges and conversations starters encourage academic achievement, character development, com-
munity and global involvement and healthy active choices.

VIBE News Jodi Simmonds Vermilion and Area is Being Empowered
The Grade 5/6 students have been exploring the concept of HOPE in VIBE classes. They learned that hope is a way of thinking
about the future and that it involves positivity about what it to come. We usually associate HOPE with big dreams, beliefs, and
expectations about meaningful things in the future. Hope is also impacted by our past experiences and it is attached to behaviors
that we choose that help to move us forward. We talked about when our hope is challenged and things that we can choose to do
to bring hope into our lives and also in to our community. We also talked about hopeful people in our lives and what it is about
them and their behaviors that makes us hopeful. The students wrapped up the program by
designing HOPE flags that you can find on display in the school. They were asked what
represented HOPE to them. You'll see lots of farm symbolism in these flags as well as
items attached to family, pets, music, games, and nature. As a special treat, they also
drafted messages of HOPE to leave for the seniors in the Seniors' Centre. We could all
agree that seniors are some of the most hopeful people we know because they have
had a lot of experiences that they have had to work through. They are great models of
hope for us. Even the most hopeful among us enjoy a little boost every once in a while
so we "hope" that the seniors enjoy these heartfelt notes.
VIBE programming in the classrooms at Clandonald School has wrapped up for this school year. Thank you so much
for inviting me into your classrooms and for sharing your wonderful children with me on Thursdays. I would really like to thank
the staff at Clandonald School for not only being such strong supporters of VIBE and of our work in their school, but also for their
continued commitment to health and wellness for our kids. Clandonald School does so many things to teach students about how
to care for themselves both mentally and physically, but also how to care for others in our community. I truly do feel so fortunate
to be a part of this incredible school environment so thank you to parents, staff and especially students for welcoming me so
wholeheartedly again this year.
May 7 is the VIBE Mental Health Art Gala at the Vermilion Regional Centre from 6-9:30 pm. Parents you should be exceptionally
proud of all of our students' entries into the art contest this year. Every Clandonald School grade 1-6 student entered and their
amazing work will be on display at the gala. Winners will be issued a special individualized invitation to the event. The gala is a free
event which includes numerous activities for children and families. This year there will be opportunities to build capes, wands,
monsters, crowns, rainmakers, treasure boxes and so much more. Adults and high school students can look forward to creating
pottery tiles and painting canvas bags. There will also be free desserts (yes, the chocolate fountain is back), beverages, and enter-
tainment. Also, new this year, will be a display of the Islay Extended Care residents artwork. They have been experimenting with
mindfulness and creative expression so we've asked them to join our celebration. Last year we welcomed over 500 people to this
very special evening. We hope that you'll join us again for another awesome event.
On May 9 we will be welcoming Loranne Ganton and Kari Thompson from JR Robson and St. Jerome's Catholic School to our
school. These ladies are the VIBE Wellness Coaches from the schools that most of our grade 6 students will be transitioning to
next year. They will be providing a pizza lunch for the grade 6 students and will be available to answer questions about their
schools and also to build a connection for your child with an adult in their new school. This is always a wonderful opportunity to
talk about things that students may be interested in or concerned about for the upcoming year. If the schools agree again this year,
they will also be providing combination locks for students to practice with so that they are confident and ready to use them at the
beginning of the school year.
Have a wonderful summer everyone!
I look forward to seeing you all again in
September

Hope in Motion Hope In Motion once again hosted a successful fund
raising event thanks to the support of individuals and
businesses in the area. Approximately $16,000 was
raised and this money will go directly to individuals and
families that are undergoing treatment for cancer.
Hope In Motion has worked in conjunction with Hay-
ing in the 30s for over 10 years. Donated items were
used as raffle items, door prizes, silent and live auction
items. Entertainment was provided by the Mennonite
Youth Choir and Rose Country. Once again a big
thank you to the individuals and business that donated
items as well as those who stepped up to bid on those
items. We hope to see everyone again next year.
