Abstract Expressionism: HelenFrankenthaler (1928 - )

Born in New York City, Frankenthalerwas heavily influenced by JacksonPollock and Hans Hoffman of theAbstract Expressionist movement. Inthe early 1950s Frankenthaler evolvedan individual style of lyricalabstraction, using washes and stainsof thin pigments on unprepared canvasto produce transparent texturesmerging with it. Later works instronger colors and forms includesynthetic polymer paint on canvas.

Frankenthaler married and divorcedfellow abstract expressionist RobertMotherwell (see Issue 12 ).

“Wasted Year”, an alias ondeviantART, was born on Symi of theDodecanesse Islands of Greece in1991.

He is currently an undergraduatestudent in Electrical and Electronics atAristotle University of Thessaloniki inGreece.

His main hobbies are songwriting,programming and drawing. He won aregional art competition and second

place in a regional songwritingcompetition during high school.

He developed his artistic style during “the boring classes of school. I alwaysprefer 'do-it-yourself' approaches overpolished ones and I try to stay asmuch [sic] original as possible.”

His dream job is having a rock band,so that he can “make a living out of something [he] likes”. His “Plan B” isto get a "real" job as an

software/electronics/IT servicesengineer.

He is an abstract photographer and isalways trying things, searching.The need to digitize his slides forprints has opened him up to newpractices; always with the will toexperiment with technique andprocess. He does his own prints, andis a self-professed “color freak”.

He mixes drawing, digital painting, andfractals.

What I’ve Been Up to Lately:

I finally started painting again, for the

first time in over a year. I have donetwo:

“The First Time”, 30 x 36, acrylic oncanvas.

“Terrestrial Voyage”, 30 x 30, acrylicon canvas.

My studio (garage) is fully set up andmost of my canvases and all of mypaints have arrived.

Studio. Those are Golden Paints, myfavorite brand. I have over 60 colorsnow.

Poem of the Month:

Grinder

My mind's at it again,won't let me sleep. It's on that train.The locomotive to theland of the agony dwellers.

There is a sawing on the roof in theback of my mind,my head is grinding like sand underthe weight of a hammerand the lever to the machine doesn'thave an “off” position.All it takes is one word, one phrase,one beat of the drum tosend me spinning into nowhere. Atleast nowhere pleasant.

So, how do you do this, make meshrivel like a slug under theflurry of salt?How do you take the last rise fromme? How do you make mefall under the weight of my ownconsciousness? Because I letyou. I let you seep into me likepoison. Your vapors, the elixirfor the self-righteous. Always thedevouring. Never just a bite.

Time does not bring me respite, I canonly hope for the forgetting, and

words of assurance in the multitude tosoothe my teeming brain.

If only I could harness these words,these thoughts, theseschemes, I could erect monuments tohonor the inventors of time. I could transcend themetaphysical, develop mentalconcrete. But then what would I do? Imight be happy, Imight not wait for the other shoeto...come crashing throughthe ceiling.

For now, it is quiet. For now, the

forgetting has arrived. Fornow, I will savor the look, the life.Until next time...
