Fort Sumter

• Started April 12th 1861• It happened at Fort Sumter in Charlestown

Harbor, South Carolina• General Beauregard was the General for the

Confederates and caused the Union Major Anderson to surrender

• There was no casualties and it was important because it was the beginning of the civil war

1st battle of Bull Run• Brigadier General Irwin

McDowell was commanding the Union to try an capture the Confederates Capital Richmond, Virginia on July 21, 1861

• The Union Army came in strong but ended up retreating North because Confederate’s General Beauregard's army was to

strong • There was 2,896 casualties

for the Union and 1,982 for the Confederates

• This battle was important because it was the first battle with major Casualties

Battle of Gettysburg

• On July 1 the Union General George Meade decided to cut off General Robert E. Lee’s troops from invading the North

• The two armies met in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and started battling

• The battle lasted three days and there was 23,055 for the union and 23,231 for the Confederates

• This was considered the turning point of the civil war, It also had the most casualties out of all the civil war battles.

2nd battle of Fort Fisher

• On January 13th the Union Invaded the Confederates last open port of Fort Fisher

• They were led by Major General Alfred Terry who commanded the ground troops and Rear Admiral David D. Porter commanded 60 ships

• The Union had 1,388 casualties and the Confederates had 583

• The Confederates Lost

Battle of Appomattox Courthouse

• On January 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee’s troops went into battle against General Grant’s troops near Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia

• There were only 164 casualties for the union in this battle and 500 for the Confederates.

• This battle was significant because it was the ending battle of the Civil war.

End of Civil War

• The Civil war ended on April 9th, 1865. It lasted almost 4 years.

• It ended at Appomattox courthouse after the battle there when General Robert E. Lee agreed to surrender to General Grant

• However the Civil War ended on April 9th, 1685 it took a while for the word to spread so there was still casualties

• June 23, 1865 was the final surrender date
