I, along with the members of my board, would like to thank the citizens of the Detroit Metropolitan Area for your readership. It is with your support that revitalization of the community through media can begin. Our mission is to elevate the consciousness and energy of the community and develop new ways our community can play a part in the success of Detroit. In this issue, we focus on up and coming Detroit artists and non-profits that are positively impacting the community. Detroit, it is important to support these types of community projects around our city.

By doing so, we will build a united front.

City Talk Magazine believes the community should be a personal remedy for recovery by doing what they can to influence public policy, safely intervene in street violence and encourage city leaders to expand educational and employment opportunities. Its time to Stand Up and Show Your Love for Detroit The Detroit Strong Initiative is a program sponsored by City Talk Magazine to fund community programs under our Non-profit 501 (C) (3) and in the communities of Detroit. I thought you were dead were the bone chilling words, spoken to me by a man who was aware of my battle with stage 4 cancer. When people give up on you, never give up on yourself. All the trials that you have been through, were only preparation to rise to the occasion! Situations in life can bring you to a breaking point, but will you break down or break through? You can never become stronger until you exercise strength in weakness. How long will you remain sick and tired of being sick and tired? Its time to break free of the trials that have broken you down!

When hurdles seek to hinder your progress, do you turn around or press forward? I was in a battle with my breaking point. I was literally sick and tired, as the hurdles of cancer afflicted my body at the age of fifthteen. The odds were stacked against me, as young black male, raised in a single parent divorced home and diagnosed with cancer. Identity means everything as a young kid. When many kids weregoing to the mall to buy the latest trends, I was in a cancer center receiving the latest treatment. The odds were stacked against me, being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

Even the Doctor said, We cant promise anything. When the haters and nay-sayers count you out, whos report will you believe? Will youbelieve mans report or will you believe the report of the Lord? For almost two years, I endured chemotherapy and radiation, five days a week. The physical pain was unbearable with hair loss, nausea, and spinal taps. Oftentimes, the psychological pain took an even greater toll, to the point where I wanted to give up and die.

Growing up in the metro Detroit area, all I had was a strong mother who encouraged me to fight cancer. As much as Im grateful to have her in my life, theres still nothing that replaces the imprint of a father on a childs life. I know who my Father is, but he never became my Dad. Any male can be a Father, but it takes a man to be a Dad.Amidst my personal pain, through faith, the daunting echoes of cancer were transformed into a symphony of hope. I began to change my mindset, from negative to positive and see the impossible as Im possible. The first three letters in the word cancer, spells CAN and I decided that I CAN and I WILL overcome! Every lesson is a blessing, preparing you for lifes testing. I learned that I have power to persevere. I may struggle, but I have strength to overcome. CANcer taught me about the audacity to hope and turn every hardship into healing.

We must inject the spirit of I CAN into the lives of our young brothers. Many of our youth are raised in fatherless homes and that much more are void of mentors. We must teach our young men not to define themselves by what they have, but define themselves by who they are. If you dont have Air Jordans, if you lose your friends, if you dont have a mil-lion dollars, do you still know who you are? !Define yourself by how you handle what you go through. Despite the negative messages, there are more options than prison, being a player, and selling dope to make money. Its time to mold and develop our young brothers to recognize that the streets and prisons are NOT a rights of passage. We must redefine the meaning that real struggle and hustle is NOT on the corner, but is in the classroom towards academic excellence. This is the time to radically revolutionize the minds of our youth and take back our communities. Its time to push our brothers into Princeton instead of prison and Yale instead of jail.

The resilient spirit of a survivor will lead to success. Today, refuse to be bitter and become better. Dont see yourself as a victim, emerge victorious. You may be going through hell, but keep going through because victory is on the other side. You may have lost a loved one, but let their memory propel you to victory. Walk by faith and be determined to not just go through, but GROW through every situation. In spite of the Doctors diagnosis, God gave me His prognosis in Psalm 118:17, that I shall not die, but live and declare the works of the Lord.

As Detroiters, we have been knocked down by violence, crime, unemployment, city government shakeups, and a myriad of other issues. However, a knock down is not a knockout unless we stay down. Lets get back in the fight! Resurrect a spirt of hope, belief, faith, and love to bring about an educational, spiritual, and economic resurgence to our city! Im a living witness that YOU CAN overcome the odds and live through dying places! Im blessed to be a blessing and live my life, healed and cancer free, by inspiring others to believe against all odds.

My life is a miracle, because I live through dying places! YOU CAN too! Transform your pain into power.Shake off the paralyzing pain of your past and fight for your future. Step out of fear into faith, because this is your time to rise to the occasion! Transition and transform your life from average to become amazing! Move from good to great, to overcome the odds and obstacles! To everyone who left you for dead and thought you gave up, use every opportunity to believe and overcome in the midst of doubt. This is your time to bounce back, survive, thrive, live through dying places, and overcome the odds! Lets do it Detroit, this is OUR time!

    OVERCOMING THE ODDS

  • By Lakisha White

Dressing fashionably on a budget is a unisex endeavor appealing to both men and women. H&M is a great choice when looking for staples like button downs and well made pants for men as well every-

thing from glitzy accessories and tailored dresses for women. Old Navy is a great place to find a variety of shirts in several different colors and if you hit the clearance rack you can find some for as little as four dollars each. The key to being fashionable on a budget is by purchasing well made clothes that are made us-ing quality textiles. Sticking to classic styles like black blazers, white button down shirts and well

made shoes allows you to incorporate wild card pieces like funky costume jew-elry for women or a patterned tie for men. Fit is everything and if your outfit

is too tight or to baggy it will throw off your whole look so having a Tailor would be valuable or at least trying on various sizes before purchasing the

garment would be beneficial.Patience is a virtue in the fashion world just as much as it is in our everyday lives; waiting on great sales in order to scoop the latest and greatest fashion forward piece will not only help you to make a statement but will save you a few pennies as well. Patience will keep you from running out and buying every new item you like at full price and allowing you to wait because you know that item will soon be on clearance for as much as 75% off and who doesnt love a great buy at a great price! However I must warn you that clearance shopping can be a bit addictive and cause you to spend more than necessary and when prices are so low it is easy to go overboard. Low prices have a tendency to make us go crazy and throw everything into our shopping bags but by only picking items you know you will wear and ver-satile pieces will give your closet an added boost while keeping your budget intact. Being fashionable on a budget is not some daunting task that will take up all your free time but with patience, a little planning and a great eye for style you could be the next trendsetter in your city and you wont have to break the bank doing it!

Having access to designer labels is wonderful but for many self proclaimed fashionistas like myself that is not a reality so places like Target, Marshalls and the good old Goodwill become our go to spots for great fashion on a budget. However, these are not the only places that feature great prices; flash sales are another great option and have become more popular in recent years with their discounted designer apparel and accessories with sales ranging from 20% to more than 50 % off allowing mem-bers a taste of luxury without experiencing buyers remorse. Major retailers offer trendy items and Designer collaborations if you must rock Designer labels and the clearance rack always has key pieces that you can mix and match to create fashionable

looks even on a tight budget.

How to Overcome Excuses in 2014 About Dan Waldschmidt Dan Waldschmidt is the author of Edgy Conversations: How Ordinary People Achieve Outrageous Success, (www.EdgyConversations.com). He is an international business strategist, speaker, author and extreme athlete. His consulting rm solves complex marketing and business strategy problems for savvy companies all over the world. Dow Jones calls his Edgy Conversations blog one of the top sales sites on the internet. Hes been proled in BBC, Fox News and The Today Show, and he is a sought-after media source.

TODAYS TOPIC 6 Tips to Gain the Edge & Meet Your Goals Great people throughout history often fail, quite miserably, before nally reaching their goals, says international business strategist Dan Waldschmidt. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime; Winston Churchill lost every public election until becoming prime minister at age 62; Henry Ford went bankrupt ve times; Albert Einstein was a terrible student and was expelled from school; Sigmund Freud was booed from a stage, says Waldschmidt, author of Edgy Conversations: How Ordinary People Achieve Outrageous Success, (www.EdgyConversations.com). Ideas, brilliance, genius they all mean nothing without the guts, passion and tenacity necessary to make your dream a reality. But often, people fall back on excuses and give up on trying to reach their goals. Most of us have dreams, and many of us have big ones, but few of us actually see them through, he says. He oers six tricks for jumping o the excuse train and forge the path to your goals. Avoid the need to blame others for anything. Mean, small-minded people know that they suck. Thats why they are so cranky and eager to point out others mistakes. They hope that by causing others to feel inadequate, everyone will forget about how woefully o the mark their own performance is. Dont blame anyone, for any reason, ever. Its a bad habit. Stop working on things that just dont matter. Not everything needs to be done in place of sleep. If you work for a boss, then you owe them solid time. You cant cut that out. You can, however, cut out television time, meetings and anything else that gets in the way of achieving your goals. Replace entertainment with activity toward your goal. Refuse to let yourself wallow in self-doubt. Youre alive to succeed. Stop compar-ing your current problems to your last 18 failures. They are not the same. You are not the same. Heres something to remember: Your entire life has been a training ground for you to capture your destiny right now. Why would you doubt that? Stop whining. Go conquer. Ask yourself, What can I do better next time? And then do it next time. If you spend a decade or two earnestly trying to be better, thats exactly what will happen. The next best thing to doing something amazing is not doing something stupid. So learn from your mistakes and use the lessons to dominate. Proactively take time to do things that fuel your passion. Exercise is a great example. Living in the moment requires you to live at peak performance. A huge part of mental tness is physical tness. A sparring or running partner is a great way to refresh physical competition. Physical activity accelerates mental motivation. Apologize to yourself and those around you for having a bad attitude. Do this once or twice and youll snap out of your funk pretty fast. When you start genuinely apologizing for being a bad inuence on those around you, you learn to stop whining and start winning.

In this edition of City Talk, we are featuring the life of Bishop Greg Davis. We began our interview asking the question: What does a day in the life of Bishop Greg Davis con-sist of? He stated that he wakes up around 6:30am and Thank God for being alive. He then wakes his wife up and she gets our daughter up and ready for school. At about 7:45am, I drop her off and then I attend cy-cling class, run 5-7 miles every day, then I check my agenda and answer emails. Af-ter that is done, I start to prepare for my show on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday which is live, sending info over to the editor informing of Hot Topics for the show and reading through the questions for the inter-views for my guest. One of the great things about having your own show and being self employed is that you handle your own time. That can also be dangerous because people who are not good at self starting themselves can abuse it. Being a self starter, I am a workaholic and learned to manage my time. This is important because I am married now and based on when my guest are in town, I may have to tape two shows. After I pick my daughter up around 3:30pm, I am shut-ting down and its time to prepare for the show. I am rushing down the highway and arriving at the studio about 10-15 minutes before the show starts. Sometimes we have meeting after the show then Im off to get dinner, then coming home and starting all over again KB: Bishop Davis, over the years you have made a dramatic change in your appearance. What made you decide to lose your weight and what was your workout/Exercise plan?BGD: On April 28, 2010, almost 4 years ago, I went to the Doctor because I wasnt feeling well and I was using the bathroom more than usual. After speaking to a friend, they sug-gested it was either my prostate or diabetes. Sure enough it was Type II Diabetes. My dia-betes count was 368 and my Doctor said if I dont make a change in my lifestyle, my eat-ing habits and start exercising right away then I can lose some limbs and my sight. That day I went straight to the mall and picked up some walking shoes. Three months later, I went back to the doctor and there was no diabetes in my body. Four years later, Ive lost 110 pounds.KB: That is an awesome testimony and it shows that once your mind is made up, the willingness to change can save your life. So often, diabetes affects our culture or race and we dont pay attention to the warning signs and we simply let it go.BGD: Exactly, but I think it takes a made up mind and I made up my mind right then that I wanted to see my daughter graduate from High School and College. I want to meet the guy that marries my daughter because I want to make sure he is the right one for her.

KB: Tell us about the work out plan you used to lose the 110 pounds.BGD: I dont eat any starches, no white bread, no white rice, no white pasta, and if I do eat bread it is wheat, only. I do not eat any beef, pork, sweets absolutely, no cheating. I gave up juices because they break down into sugar, nothing but water. No fried foods and I exercise daily 7 days a week.KB: How long do you exercise each day?BGD: What I recommend to someone who is just starting off, is to walk five miles a day. I know that may sound like a lot but it is really not. It is equivalent to a one hour walk. Get your music in your ear or make your business calls that will pass your time away. Thats what I did. You can do it. Just like you pick out a time to talk to God or to talk to people you have to pick out a time to concentrate on your health. I lost 80 pounds in 8 months from just walking. KB: That is encouraging.BGD: I run now because walking has be-come boring. Dont just go on a diet, change your lifestyle.KB: Good information for our readers and myself. I, like so many others, at the begin-ning of the year was going on a diet but this is something I can stick, too.BGD: Thats the key, finding something you can stick to and enjoy. The things I eat now are things that I enjoy. I enjoy certain veg-etables now that I never thought I would ever enjoy. My entire appetite has changed.KB: Congrats on your Wedding to Minister Catina Vaughn back in August. How is it being newlyweds?BGD: Like with anything, it is adjustments. The key was, however, we became friends before we became lovers. I think it is impor-tant that in marriages your spouse is your best friend. I think that sometimes we are looking for others to give and say what the spouse is suppose to do. I have been mar-ried before and the biggest mistake I made was making our marriage about ministry first and that is not the order of God. The order of God is God first, Family second and then Ministry. If you follow that order, your marriage will be fine. We are happy in our marriage. My wife has two beautiful daughters, ages 16 and 11 and we are now expecting a child.KB: Congrats on the new edition.BGD: Im like Father Abraham We went right to it. When you get our age, We planned it.KB: How did you know Minister Catina was the one?

BGD: When the right one comes, the first thing you need to do is become the right one. For 3 1/2 years I worked on becoming the right one. I knew she was the right one because she was everything I wrote down in my vision for my wife to be. I wrote every-thing I wanted her to be and look but one thing I didnt put in there was for her not to be a preacher. She was everything I put in it. From her sense of humor to size to her witti-ness, she was everything I wrote down. I said to myself I didnt want to marry a preacher again but I took the advice of the Lord and went with it. The bible says write the vision and make it plainKB: I read the inspiring messages on face-book and for those who are single, what would be some advice when looking for your soul mate?BGD: Dont ask for something you are not willing to be yourself.KB: That was good!!BGD: Dont ask for something or someone you are not willing to be yourself. So many times we make expectation of someone com-ing until we dont have any expectations of ourselves. So you have to become the right one, so when the right one comes he will be ready for you. While you are waiting, you have to prepare yourself. Be over the wrong One. Dont bring excess baggage into the new relationship. Prepare yourself. Be willing to give a little bit. I found that my expectations were too high and if you are not willing to give a little bit you will be wait-ing a long time. When your expectations are too high that means that you are looking for a perfect person. Everybody comes with some-thing. Dont look for someone to bring you happiness, they must add to your happiness but you have to be happy first. KB: Before becoming a Television host what was your occupation?BGD: Twenty-eight years of full-time ministry. I have been preaching 26 years, an Evangelist for over 20 years and traveled the country. Ive been on 3 different networks including TCT, The Word Network for 3 years and on Impact Network for over 3 years.KB: What inspired the show?

    BISHOP GREG DAVIS

Dont ask for something you are not willing to be yourself.

  • BGD: I was inspired to do something differ-ent in Christian television what I mean by that is that everybody comes on television preaching and of course, I could have done that. But I think we are distracted because of the lack of knowledge and we fool ourselves into thinking that Christians dont watch sec-ular programs and of course, at 5 oclock we get a lot of bad news so I felt it was necessary to bring the Good News across the country and the entire world. Good News exposes new people that would not otherwise get exposure. We include things like Hot Topics because I think Christians feel when they get saved we are not part of the world. We are in the world but we are not of the world, so we also have to know whats going on. We deal with everything from music to social issues interviews. We have had R&B sensa-tion Kem and other national recording artist and actors. They are still good people, they just sing love music and play character roles. Good News showcases what is going on in the country by giving it a spiritual and posi-tive side.KB: Good News mission is similar to City Talk because we also show the positive side of what is going on here in the Detroit met-ropolitan area. Some people may say that this is not realistic but we, as media, must make it our business to let the world know there is hope and change does happen. KB: What was your most memorable experi-ence on the show?BGD: Interviewing some of the legends such as Shirley Ceasar and Andre Crouch. These two were the most momentous because they are legends. Shirley Ceasar is a riot she is hysterical. One of my favorite interviews is Bishop TD Jakes and his entire staff for the movie Jumping the broom that took me to another level.KB: How I did it written by Bishop Greg Davis, describe your book and where is it available?BGD: How I did it describes my journey to lose weight and return to good health. I had so many people asking me how did I lose my weight. So I decide to put it in a book with the perfect title How I did it. It is a 48 page book and it can be purchased on Amazon. You will be blessed through my testimony.KB: How do you feel the Preachers of LA represented Ministers?BGD: Im going to simply quote my Bishop, Bishop Paul S. Morton and say to this the same question and used one word Un-nec-essary. I think it was unnecessary and 90% of them were my friends. I just think that some things and some struggles dont neces-sarily have to be shown. On the other side, I am really proud of Pastor Ron Gibson, who showed the positive side of the show. He was showed saving souls and his compassion about his family and the saving of his sister going through the alcohol addiction.

KB: Do you feel the show positively repre-sented Ministers and the Church?BGD: In some situations but others it showed us in a bad or negative light. In my opinion it kind of hurt our voices and thats just my opinionKB: If there was a Preachers of Detroit, with the purpose being positivity, saving souls and the community service done by Ministers of Detroit, who do think would be a great cast?BGD: Oh I dont even have to think about this. I think a good cast would consist of Bishop Andrew Merritt, Bishop Edgar Vann, Bishop Wayne T. Jackson, Bishop Clarence Langston, Bishop Drew Sheard, Pastor Solo-mon Kinloch, and Pastor Welton Smith. Pas-tor Smith has a small church but he is doing big things, which shows you dont have to have a big church to do big things you have to have a big vision. Kb: oh yes that would be an awesome and powerful cast full of men of GodKB: You heard it here first. Whats next for Bishop Greg Davis?BGD: Im working on a TV show that is some-thing like Sunday Best and I have been asked to host the pilot and continuing to work with production company called Ground Break-ing Entertainment Productions. We will be doing production work for others and I want to do some producing of other TV shows. And the biggest thing, hopefully in the next 6 months, I will go back to being a Pastor. That is my passion and I want to see our min-istry grow every week. I will still evangelize but I want to see the growth of people every day. Because as an Evangelist, you know that you are helping people and things are changing but as a Pastor, you see the day by day change. My wife and I want to pastor together and thats what we are looking for-ward too.KB: City Talk Magazine is about uplifting the city and showing the positive things that go on in the city. With all the negativity dis-played in the media about Detroit what do you feel the city and the community can do to help improve our citys image?

BGD: I feel its already happening. I see the t-shirt that everyone is wearing Detroit vs. Everybody creates a positive attitude and thats where it has to start. We have to stop saying negative things. We have to believe in where we live and believe the city can change and turn around. Not just believe but Faith without works is dead we have to become caretakers of our own neighbor-hoods. Stop waiting for others to do what we can do for ourselves. Its not going to just happen with the government, we have to do it ourselves. We have to begin to speak over our lands. Prophets can always see what we dont see and this puts me in the mind of how, Bishop Clarence Langston speaks of the Miracle City.KB: How can the church play more of a role in turning around the City of Detroit?BGD: I dont know if you have noticed but we got a church on every corner. If every church would do their part and take care of their block, wouldnt that be a magnificent change. If every church would just take one block. In some cases, we have two and three churches on the same block, could you just imagine the change that would be. I am talking about us getting out on Satur-days and cleaning up ourselves, it can be done, we just have to make the initiative.KB: Where do you visualize Detroit in 5 years?BGD: I have been back in Detroit over 3 years and I can see improvement in the city. I go Downtown almost every day and I see the change. Some people are upset because the change and renovation started with downtown but if you look at major cit-ies that is where the initial reform begins. It is the life, blood or the heart of any major city. The blood pumps from the heart out and thats what, I believe, the strategy is. I can see the renovation going into midtown and going up from there. Five years from now, I believe we will see a city that will rival other cities and we will become sec-ond to none.KB: I like to end all of my interviews with uplifting and encouraging words to our readers, what advice would you advise our readers.BGD: Stay focused! I know that is not deep but whatever you are looking to do or whatever you focused on the most, that is what you will receive. So what is your focus? You cant say that you want to be an entrepreneur and you dont make that your focus. Stay focused

  • Being celibate is the new black. Whether its waitress, Linda, from Tyler Perrys sitcom, Love Thy Neighbor, informing her online date that shes celibate, or actress, Meagan Good, shar-ing how she and her husband, Hollywood executive, DeVon Franklin, were abstinent with each other until marriage more women are choosing to hold on to the cookie, but for more than 90 days - theyre holding on to it until he puts a ring on it and the two say, I do.

But in the meantime, with media claiming it to be so hard for a single black woman to settle down with a good man, whats a single girl with standards to do?

Is it realistic to date someone several weekends in a row while the maintaining no expectation of physical dessert after din-ner?

Not only is it realistic, its also best in order to maintain ones dignity, spiritual grounding and peace.

Choosing to be abstinent until marriage is not a death sen-tence, its actually a proclamation of freedom freedom from settling for less than Gods best and freedom from all the emo-tional complications and drama that accompanies sex before marriage.

The key to maintaining your standards while dating is to make sure you date someone who holds similar standards as you.

Let your date know, up front, that youre abstinent until mar-riage.

If he tests you along the way, maintain your stance and back away if you have to hell respect you even more for it.

    Men respect women with standards.

    Single, Dating and Set Apart

If a man has to work in order to win your love, which includes his working to keep his hands off you, then if hes really into you hell respect your desire and will do whatever it takes in order to keep you.

A man who is out to get some and thats it, with no plans of a future with you, will try you and once he sees he cant get any hes on to the next one.

So dont get offended if, during your quest to re-main set apart, that many fall off along the way. They werent yours to begin with because the one God has for you, is for you and hell not only re-spect your decision to wait hell also value you the more for it and would also want to wait, too.

The Man Behind the Vision: Kamal SmithLooking back, that was pretty big to me. I mean not just the fact that the producers of the show liked my words but the fact that night after night when performing that piece, every audience would always give a big applause when I was done. Even then I wasnt thinking that I would start righting my own plays and get to where I am now but I did know that something special was happening. The following year Kamal was called back by the same production compa-ny to do another play Voices In My Head, only this time he would be called to fill an additional role, director. I still laugh when I think about my directorial debut. Im sitting in our first read through with my other cast members and all of a sudden we get the news the director is not coming. So as she is telling us the news that the production may not go on, my good friend stands up and says Kamal will do it. All eyes turned to me and I was so nervous. I ended up directing the play of course and I never looked back, Smith says. Since that play he went on to start his own production company (Lynns Boys Media LLC) with his brother(Diallo Smith) and good friend(Shantell Fancher-Brown).

Since 2007 the trio has produced seven plays, two short films, a featured length film (Loud Pack) and now have ventured to television with Because Were Men. Because Were Men has just been a true blessing. To have the whole city of Detroit laughing and supporting my television show is simply God. It was a testimony of what happens when people come together for the cause. Im so thankful that my good friend and assistant director of the show introduced me to the president of Mytv20 (David Bangura) and Im extremely thankful that David saw the vision and tool a chance on me. Ill never forget that, Smith says. Because Were Men has just got picked up for the a second season and Smith is ready to do things bigger and better. Season one was a great opportunity but Season 2 I plan to show the world that we belong to be there. My vision is to continue to show the world just how much talent Detroit has and spread positive humor while doing so, Smith says. Smith and his whole production team is launch-ing a big campaign for season 2 on January 5th on Indiego-go.com. This campaign will allow more opportunity for more actors, actresses and behind the scenes crew to be involved. Smith ended his interview with nothing but hope for the city he loves so much, My sole mission with my talents is to inspire. Not only the people of Detroit, but inspire people outside Detroit to view this great city as something more than what they see on CNN.

Every Sunday at 10p on Mytv20, you can tune in and watch Detroit native Kamal Smith perform as the character of Max on the hit television show Because Were Men. A show created by Smith and also a show he never imagined having. Growing up on the East side of Detroit, Kamal never had the ambitions of being an actor or director. In fact growing up he aspired to be singer. When I was a kid you couldnt tell me I wasnt going to be the next Michael Jackson Smith says. Singing all through high school (Cass Technical High School) and college(Wilberforce University), the passion of music consumed Kamal and it wasnt till an odd turn of events that pushed him towards a new passion. I came to a point where I guess I felt the dream of getting a record deal was never going to happen. I think when I auditioned for American Idol in 2004 and didnt make it, is when I decided thats it, Smith says. Luckily for Smith one thing he has always enjoyed doing was writing and it his words that would land him a position in the acting world.

After losing hope in the music industry, Smith took a chance at an audition for a role in the hit sitcom All of Us. Honestly I felt out of place. I mean here I was at the Fox Theater with at least 3,000 people going after the same role I was. Three Thousand people that all had their head shots and resumes as I stood in line with nothing in hand and not a clue of how this would go. It just so happened the person that I was supposed to read with in my audition had left the room and I ended up auditioning with Tisha Campbell and something miraculous happened, I made her laugh , Smith says. Even though he did not walk away with a role on the show, Smith walked away with something better a new spark. Not to far after that he took that spark and auditioned for his first play Love Is showing at 1515 Broadway. Smith auditioned with his own poem that was fit for the play. In fact it was so fit they used his audition piece in the actual play.

Spirit of Detroit: Next GenerationUpon my graduation from middle school, I was faced with the challenge that is Cass Technical High School. During this time at Cass Tech, my mom was no longer employed which put a real strain on our family. I caught the bus to school every day for 4 years. Trying to make the best of my current situation, I knew that I had to strive to make something happen for my family. To try and accom-plish this feat, I obtained a job at the local barbershop, where I would clean up every Saturday for $20 so that my mom did not have to provide me bus fare for the week. I knew that if I could make it to and through Cass Tech that life would, somehow, show favor and become what I wanted it to be for me and my family. During my time at both the barbershop and Cass Tech, I was able to learn the life principles that would help me guide the rest of my experiences. While at Cass Tech, I located my passion which is music. I was able to join the music department by ways of the choir. There, I learned how to read, write, perform and produce music. This is the time I learned my passion for music and the arts. I was on the production team of 5 staged productions including Sparkle, Rent, and Hairspray. I became one of the well-known students that everyone would come to know and love. It was there where I was able to graduate in the top 15% of my graduating class which consisted of approximately 400 students. While at Cass, the message from all my instructors was consistent, Whats Next? I struggled with that question many nights, trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my new found acceptance, passion, and zeal for living. It was then that I decided that college was the next step. I knew that there was more to life than just the struggles that still I faced daily with coping with high school and trying to figure out how I would be able to help my family. Upon my matriculation from high school, I was accepted to Indiana Tech. Here I now serve as Intern for Student Life, which is responsible for all student activities, outside of the classroom, on our campus. I serve specifically as the Audio Visual and Conference Services Intern where I am privileged to work with and lead a team of my peers to obtain daily, weekly and monthly goals that are set before us as it relates to the maintaining of our student union facility. While holding this position, I have been able to maintain a merely perfect grade point average of 3.87 while studying Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Management and taking honors classes (in which I am the first and only African American male that will graduate with honors from Indiana Tech in May of 2014). With this degree, it is my goal to acquire my own business which would consist of a sporting agency and a sporting complex for our clients. Currently, Darius Darling is serving as a Promotions Intern for the Detroit Tigers. He is responsible for marketing and advertisement of the Detroit Tigers Kids Club. He also serves faithfully at Jamison Temple Missionary Baptist Church as the Director of Choirs. In addition to those responsibilities, he still finds time to sing with national recording artist Dr. E. LaQuint Weaver II and the Hallelujah Singers where he has served the ministry for 6 years. Darius is also working on establishing his own sports and entertainment representation firm. He has a few clients on his radar and looking to go into talent management soon. City Talk Magazine is proud to support Darius Darling and believe he is a Detroit Talent that is on the move.

City Talk Magazine believes in the spirit of Detroit and that the current and next generation Detroit will be successful once again. During the course of researching positive stories to bring to the community I met Darius Darling. This young man submitted his bio to me and the story was so moving, we decided to share with the community:My name is Darius Darling, and I am a current senior in college attending Indiana Institute of Technology (Indiana Tech). I am originally from Detroit, Michigan where I attended Detroit Cass Technical High School, multiple-time winner of the Best High School category of the Hoodies/Neighborhood Awards. I would say, now I am doing pretty well for myself, however, life was not always as good as it may seem to be now.Growing up in Detroit is, by far, not the easiest place for a young man to grow up, especially considering the facts that I lost my father at the age of 3 to gun violence, leaving my mother to raise my older sister and myself, and later my younger brother, alone. At the age of 4, I was diagnosed with a rare case of Alopecia Areata which is a hair loss condition which causes a person to lose, and possibly never regain, hair in some or all areas of the body, which you can imagine can lead to a pretty rough childhood. I went through elementary and middle school with this condition which caused me to have balding areas in my head which subjected me to all types of scrutiny from my classmates who I believed to be my friends. For so many years, I had to deal with the name calling and running jokes of being the funny-looking guy, Shreks little brother, or the product of a leopard. I went through so many hurtful and harmful moments while trying to live the life of a normal child by playing basketball and trying to make friends. During this time I had made the decision that I would no longer deal with the scrutiny of my classmates. I decided to cut all of my hair off, which became a bigger issue for me to handle when I went back to school the next day. I was then referred to as a cancer patient and many other names that my classmates came up with. But still, like the city of Detroit, I kept pushing and was accepted to Cass Technical High School.

  • Detroit HairAs we all know, when it comes to reinventing our looks the first thing in the line of fire is our hair. We can cut it, dye it, or straighten it; the hair is the most versatile part of our bodies. Changing your hair is ok to do as long as the process if done safely, if not that could be the last hairstyle ever youll be able to try. The hair is an extension of ourselves, you should treat it like an arm or leg, you wouldnt subject your limbs to five-hundred degree heat or use an excess amount of oils because then youd literally fry like potatoes in grease. If youre wondering why your hair hasnt grown in a while, its because your hair is protesting! You may not know it but you are neglecting your hair, so of course its not going to cooperate with you, you and your hair are in the process of a divorce. Lucky for those who are reading this right now, there is a chance of reconciliation. The most important tip to beautiful and healthy hair is moisturizing. Feed your hair, this may sound strange because technically the hair shaft is dead, but your roots are not. Its the easiest way to prevent dry, damaged hair; dont starve your hair of oil but dont over feed it either. Olive and Coconut oil treats our hair with care, its not heavy and it doesnt sit on the hair when you apply it, it actually absorbs it and works from the inside out. it helps fight dandruff and damage, and it also thickens and strengthens the hair. If you dont trust manu-factured oils, try these natural oils including carrot, rosemary and tea tree oils. Know your hairs tolerance; if its thin use less, and if you have thick hair that you cant even run a comb through, you are going to need more than just a moisturizer. African American women have been the victim of thick hair for years, its hard taming the mane and it takes its toll on the scalp and even self-esteem. The relaxer has always been the answer to thick and unruly hair, but women have realized that constant use is destroying their hair faster than it can reproduce. Ive recently discovered a new technique in hair care, which is called pre-conditioning. Its more than just moisturizing, and it may sound strange because youre thinking that theres no sense when youll be washing it all out anyway, but thats not true. Pre-conditioning consists of conditioner, honey, oils like coconut or olive and mayo (its optional). Its like applying a relaxer, put on it, and since there arent any harsh chemicals you can leave it in overnight if you want. The results are more soft and luxurious locks and shiny and silky hair when flat ironed. Be cautious of how much heat you put on your hair, I know youve heard this time after time but listen again keep the heat to a minimum! Get a heat protection serum, its like eight dollars from Wal-Mart, and it goes a long way, for thin hair, keep the setting low on your flat irons and for thicker hair use temperatures between 350 and 400. When blow drying start out with a low heat and then increase as you go, subjecting your hair to high heat on contact will for sure dry your hair of all its oils initiat-ing breakage and split ends. All of this work your are putting in can go to waste if you dont eat healthier foods, add in fruits and veggies and stay hydrated in order to have healthier hair. Go easy with your hair, even with all these tips on saving it, the best way is to let it rest, opt for buns or ponytails or even wigs and weaves in order to allow the hairs natural oil to build up. I hope I was able to save your marriage to your hair, treat it right because it is the crown that all queens wear, stay beautiful and stay fierce.

  • Speech Highlights from the City of Detroit WebsiteMayor Mike Duggan Delivers 1st State of the City Address

In his first State of the City Address, Mayor Mike Duggan outlined a vision and strat-egy for improving services to Detroiters who have waited too long for real change.

Among the key initiatives Mayor Duggan Announced were:Creation of the Department of Neighborhoods. Mayor Duggan has fulfilled a key campaign pledge by creating a single city department to handle the myriad of city services that directly relate to neighborhoods, including blight removal, trash collec-tion, demolition, vacant lot clearing. Instead of having to navigate 14 different of-fices scattered across the city, residents will be able to go to a single location in each of the citys seven city council districts. Duggan also named the community leaders he has tapped to manage the DON offices across the city, which are expected to be established by the end of March.

They are: District One: Stephanie Young

District Two: Kim Tandy District Three: Gary Bullock

District Four: Odell Tate District Five: Vince Keenan

District Six: Rico Razo District Seven: Marshall Bullock

Put Fire Escrow Fund demolition money to work. Currently, there is nearly $20 million dollars in an escrow funds earmarked for burned houses across the city that have sat unused for years. Today, there are more than 5000 fire damaged, demoli-tion ready homes across the city. In his speech, Duggan announced that the city will tap into the fire escrow fund and begin strategic demolition within the next 30 days.

Blight: The Detroit Land Bank, with the help of Detroits Law Department, will be filing lawsuits, going after property owners whove allowed homes to become eyesores. The property owners will have the choice to either fix up the house and have it occupied in six months or tear it down. If they choose to ignore the citys request, we will file suit and seize the house. Those that are solid will be auctioned off. Those that are beyond repair will be demolished.Improve Maintenance of city parks. In addition to pledging the city will maintain 150 of the citys premier parks to its highest standard of grass cutting every two weeks and 50 more on a three week cycle, Duggan announced a new partnership that will keep another 50 parks groomed and clean throughout the year. To accomplish this, Duggan has enlisted the support of dozens of ministers across the city, 30 of which already have signed pledges for their churches to maintain the parks. In addition to making sure the grass is cut every three weeks, they also have pledged to the park free of trash.

Bringing Detroits Lighting to National Standards: The Public Lighting Authority is moving quickly through the pilot areas on Detroits Westside and Eastside. Crews are installing more than 500 new LED lights every sin-gle day. The new plan, backed by Mayor Duggan and City Council means LED lights that meet the national standard will be in Detroits neighborhoods by 2015, a full year ahead of schedule.

DDOT: Detroit is bringing in more mechanics to get our buses back on the road faster. The Mayor has also asked US Transportation Secretary Anthony Fox to act quickly on Detroits request for 50 new buses that will be in service by this Fall. DDOT is installing 50 security cameras on buses within the next month and 300 by this fall. Those cameras will be supported by a dedi-cated transit police force of 40 officers who will be in place on our buses this spring.

  • If you are getting ready for the summer, then fitness may be one of your plans. With all of the weight loss plans, supple-ments, and opinions available knowing what works for you may be challenging. Dont fret, just when you thought you found everything there is still something left. It is called confidence. Many personal trainers and weight loss champions consider this to be a key factor in achieving fitness goals.

You have probably heard that in order to look your best you have to feel your best. Scientist have used studies to prove that the lack of motivation is associated with depression. That is a mental illness that causes symptoms such as laziness, low self-esteem, and low physical maintenance. You are probably wondering how to boost your confidence. One simple step is to find your happiness. Stay away from material that comforts you it will only give temporary joy. Your closet is probably already filled with favorite clothes and top of the line shoes. These items only mask what you are feeling underneath.

Try doing things that keeps that big grin on your face that your parents always asked for doing family pictures. Have you noticed when you are busting moves to the latest radio hit, you are on cloud nine? Use this same method when trying to build your inner love. Try uplifting activities like cooking, dancing, or meditating. These examples are not only confidence boosters, but forms of physical activities.

Cooking may not seem as the ideal thing to do in weight loss, but it is actually one of the most important factors. What you cook is what you eat, and what you eat will cause an emotional reaction. If you eat healthy foods that is how you will feel, and vice versa. Author Michael Pollan frequently promotes the idea of Pay more eat less. Basically, when you pay more on your grocery bill you are unlikely to overindulge. In todays economy when tobuy a pure organic fruit cost a fourth of your budget; you will most likely find ways to divide it into a piece for each day. Depriving yourself of foods will not be the best option. People often think that will make them feel better. They end up feeling empty, angry, and hungry. Hunger makes your metabolism slow down, and causes the fat to stick around. Your main goal is to get rid of it.

Appearing to be the best of you is a result of feeling the best. Every fitness health method can be used, and you will still have to deal with the person inside. Radiating positive energy will allow your body to function properly. If your body operates the way it should you will too!
