A Note About Safety...Swim Testing: For safety purposes, swim testing is required for all patrons under 4 feet 6 inches tall who wish to use the 8 Lane Pool. The swim test consists of swimming one length (25 yards) of the pool with basic swimming ability without stopping. Patrons who can effectively swim 25 yards across the pool will be given a wrist band and their names will be written in our Swim Test Binder. Once you have passed the swim test assessment it is valid for one season, i.e. summer, fall/winter, spring. You do not need to take the swim test daily, simply ask one of our friendly deck supervisors for a new arm band. *Passing a swim test does not create an exemption to the age policies, please see page 6 for more information.

Safety Breaks: On busy days patrons may be asked to exit the pools for a five minute safety break. Safety breaks are essential in aquatic safety management. Safety breaks allow lifeguards to check for missing children, and effectively scan all areas of the pool for any hazards or unsafe conditions. This also allows parents to reconnect with their kids, and serve as an opportunity to use the bathroom which will help limit the possibility of pool closures due to fecal contamination.

Inclement Weather: The Aquatics management team monitors lightning and inclement weather so pools only close when necessary for safety. Feel free to call 721-5269 to check the status of the pools prior to your visit if there is questionable weather.

Shawver Tree FundThe City of Laramie and Rotary Clubs of Laramie have partnered in memory of Chuck Shawver to create the Shawver Tree Fund. The fund is set up to replace dying, decadent and dangerous trees and to help provide additional trees within public use areas such as community entrance corridors or along City rights of ways where more trees are needed to fill in or extend shade tree plans, playlot parks, and new parks. For more information on the Shawver Tree Fund please contact Randy Overstreet, City Arborist at [email protected] or 721-5338 or visit: www.cityoflaramie.org/trees

Community Forest Stewardship PlanA Community Forest Stewardship Plan is being developed to provide a long range management system and policies for tree care and placement of trees throughout public spaces and the park system. To learn more about the plan and provide feedback visit: www.cityoflaramie.org/trees

Imperial Heights ParkDesign for the new Park will continue through this winter with construction in the summer of 2015.

Little League Fencing ProjectWe are pleased to announce that after 50 years of use the Albany County Recreation Board is partnering with the City of Laramie and the University of Wyoming to replace the fencing at the Little League Complex! The fencing will be replaced in the spring of 2015.

Greenhill Cemetery ImprovementsAs work concludes on the UW Lewis Street Steam Line Project, please be aware that the main road through Greenhill Cemetery might not be repaved before inclement weather arrives. Please be aware that as winter begins, the road condition may deteriorate due to the elements and further closures may be necessary. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

Adopt a Park or Trail ProgramThis volunteer program is sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department and encourages citizens to get involved in various aspects of park maintenance. These agreements are typically with an individual or group of individuals who have a common interest in a specific park or recreation area. Sections of the Greenbelt Trail are also available for adoption or sponsorship. Adoption agreements allow groups to more actively contribute by scheduling trash pick-ups bi-annually along a quarter mile stretch of trail. Sponsor agreements are for groups who wish to simply donate funds to the maintenance of the Greenbelt. Sponsors and adopters are recognized on signage posted along the trail. For more information about adopting a trail or your neighborhood park, call 721-5267.

Huck Finn Pond Fishing Pier ReplacementThe current fishing Pier at Huck Finn Pond located in LaPrele Park is over 20 years old and will be replaced. The project will also address and replace much of the concrete leading to the fishing pier to provide an ADA accessible route to the Huck Finn Pond fishing pier. This project is sponsored in part by the Albany County Recreation Board.

ADA Transition PlanParks and Recreation staff are continuing to work throughout the parks on upgrading infrastructure to ensure compliance with ADA requirements. If you have any concerns or suggestions please contact 721-5264.

Bandshell Painting and RepairThe Washington Park Bandshell was originally constructed in the late 1930s and has served the Laramie community ever since. In the late 1990s the bandshell was caulked and re-painted. Ongoing maintenance of the bandshell is necessary to maintain this iconic structure. The bandshell will be caulked and re-painted again in 2015.
