Truly, in the business world, what has been done in the past, often defines its fate for the future. So, it is very important that everyone is aware of the history or whatever has happened in the past.

This is where “City Barta” steps in. “City Barta” is like a gateway to the past, through which employees are updated on all that has happened inside City Bank for the past few months. 2011 is the year of innovation for “City Barta”. For the first time, we are doing a digital version of the newsletter instead of the printed version for better rationalization of costs. Moreover, alongside the business, we are also highlighting the personal side of the employees in several sections in this issue of “City Barta”, so that they can have a little bit of smile on their faces.

“City Barta” is about YOU — the people in City Bank, who are the very core-essence of the bank. We welcome every one of you to take a journey through the past so that a better future can be built.

It is the 4th issue of “City Barta” and the 1st of 2011. Naturally, I am very happy because at a personal level, I have always held the belief that ‘communication’ is the most important key behind the success of any multi-dimensional organization. “City Barta” exactly delivers that part of the game; making people aware of what is happening around them, and giving people the push to be more social, open and team-focused. The 3rd issue, I know, has been a big hit. And I am sure this one will be too.

We are shifting our course with this issue. “City Barta” will no longer come out in the printed format, rather, it will be a digital version this time. At City Bank, each employee has a PC - either a desktop or a laptop – and many even have access to the internet from their mobile phones as well. So, it makes full economic sense to do away with all those papers and printing costs and to stick to the web version of the magazine only. I hope this new form and format will be welcomed by you all. I will be looking forward to receiving feedback.

You all know 2010 has been quite a successful year for the bank. Despite global recession and its slow recovery, City Bank has had an outstanding year in terms of profitability in 2010. Not only that, our top lines (interest income, fee income, interest expense and all that, which ultimately gives us the revenue figure) were also fantastic; interest income registered a growth of 31%; interest expenses dropped 4% despite the deposit growth of 8%; fee revenue rose by 63%; total operating profit grew by 68% (you will be happy to know that our operating profit grew from BDT 225.6 crore in 2009 to BDT 410 crore in 2010); and profit after paying taxes grew by 218% in 2010 (to BDT 184.9 crore against BDT 81.9 crore in 2009).

Behind these astounding positive figures, we had also worked relentlessly on control and compliance and on building a better and more robust infrastructure platform.

A number of other colorful initiatives have been undertaken in 2010. I will just name a few here; the launch of American Express Corporate Cards; the launch of the country’s first lounge at the airport; mystery shopping surveys in Retail and SME; a handful of staff-level campaigns focused on growing businesses – all of which were successful; the launch of a number SME centers across the country, and so on. And we remain one of the largest Corporate/Wholesale banks in the country.

And of course, we all enjoyed the tremendous glory and honor of being the “Strongest Bank in Bangladesh-2010” as awarded by The Asian Banker in early 2010.

I sincerely feel 2011 is going to be another year that will make us be proud once again.

In Arabic, ‘Manarah’ means ‘Lighthouse’. A lighthouse guides a ship towards safety from the hostile sea, and similarly, the objective of City Manarah is to guide customers into the world of a fully Islamic Shariah compliant banking.

Islamic Banking has experienced exceptional growth in Bangladesh due to strong market demand. At City Bank, we understand and care for our customers’ values and needs. The journey of Islamic Banking in City Bank dates back to 2003, when we opened an Islamic branch at Motijheel, Dhaka.

The year 2010 is the eighth full year of Islamic Banking operation of the Bank. During these years, the Bank has taken a number of significant steps to provide full length of Shariah compliant products and services to the customers. From that point of view, City Manarah is a re-launch of our Islamic Banking. We did it in December, 2010 with the introduction of four new retail liability and two new loan products. The bank has been making consistent efforts in providing products with better features that fulfill the objectives (Maqasid) of Islamic Banking.

One of the unique features of City Manarah lies in its philosophy – that it must be completely based on the principles of Islamic law (also known as Shariah). Two basic principles behind Islamic Banking are the sharing of profit and loss and significantly the prohibition of the collection and payment of interest. Interest in any form is not permitted under the Islamic law.

Another distinctive feature is that with regard to City Manarah, we are using a new version of ‘Ababil’ software from Millennium Information Solution Ltd. (MISL). Ababil is a certified Shariah software, which is specialized and well equipped with capabilities to maintain Islamic Banking principles. Apart from City Bank, banks like AB Bank, Al-Arafah, SIBL etc. also use the same software for their Islamic Banking operation.

Currently, we are providing Islamic Banking services from 30 branches of the bank. This includes all Dhaka branches and 5 branches outside Dhaka serving almost 3,000 Manarah clients in the retail category. City Manarah offers a wide variety of deposit and investment products such as Manarah Savings, Manarah Current, Manarah Term Deposit, Manarah Monthly Deposit Scheme, Manarah Personal Finance and Manarah Auto Finance. Each is designed to meet your financial needs in accordance with the Shariah rule.

The vision of City Manarah, progressively, is to provide a full range of Islamic Banking service to all our Retail, SME and Corporate customers alike. Keeping this in mind, City Manarah wants to utilize the Bank’s vast network of 98 offices to provide online Islamic Banking services to our customers. We are also planning to introduce newer products i.e. Islamic Home Finance, Islamic Credit Card and Hajj/Umrah schemes in near future.

We believe City Manarah will be seen as a trend-setter in Islamic Banking in Bangladesh.

CITY BANK CREDIT CARD -THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA IN BANGLADESHMajharul IslamHead of Cards (Acting)

The existence of credit cards in Bangladesh market is documented since the last century. And throughout the last two decades, this industry has witnessed magnificent developments. But, it is City Bank that has offered the clientele unique platters to taste from, which no other bank had done earlier. Introducing the world’s # 1 card brand, American Express Credit Cards, to the market in 2009 with distinctive features and facilities was absolutely a new avenue for the customers to explore. Among the ample benefits, Strategic Partnerships with Super Stores, 5-Star Hotels and International Airlines are most noteworthy. And I am proud to be one of the fortunate persons who have been associated with this venture from the very beginning.

We reached the milestone of 55,000+ AMEX credit cards within the first year of launch, which is a record by itself in this industry. Throughout the year 2010, new card acquisition, sales and customer convenience were all set at a similar height in our priority list. Customer convenience was ensured through a 24-hour Call Center, E-mail Service, Front Desk Service and having 14 card ambassadors attached to our branches.

Apart from multifold customer care assistance, customer satisfaction was also

guaranteed through the card acceptance at a large number of merchant bases. To be specific, at present, the number of merchants are 3,000+ and the number of Point of Sales (POS) terminals are over 4,000+. This mammoth task was possible only by taking notice of both small merchants from suburbs to world famous brand names like BATA, FedEx, DHL etc. Excellence in this area was further enhanced by introducing “Single Point Acceptance” POS terminals, where both VISA and AMEX Cards are acceptable.

We have offered the best to our AMEX cardmembers in all comparable matrixes available in the market. This claim can surely be supported with the directory of offered

benefits. To begin with, there are 73 SELECT Partners offering 10%-20% savings under three major categories – dinning, retail and lodging. The list continues with a number of value added services like special packages at hospitals and airlines, Flexibuy - instalment payment option with 0% interest and last but not the least, the ‘City Bank American Express Lounge’, the first world class lounge in Bangladesh with state-of-the-art facilities at the Dhaka International Airport departure area.

City Bank introduced the concept of Corporate Card too, which was first of its kind in this market. We launched AMEX Corporate Cards in October, 2010.

City Bank cards did not limit its scope by only concentrating on promotion. It also focused on the back-end systems up-gradation. An updated Card Management Systems was configured and installed successfully. After that, VISA Debit Card Migration was done in 2010, where 65,000 debit cards were migrated with zero downtime and also, without changing the plastic and PIN, which by itself is an example for this industry.

City card’s success story became more colorful with the launch of Accelerated Banking. VISA Debit Card – pre-printed card at the time of account opening which allows offering single point service to the customer – was introduced. Then came the Islamic VISA Debit Card, another jewel in the cards crown in the year 2010.

Apart from the hectic and monotonous work load, we, the members of the cards team, do take special care and effort to follow a healthy work-life balance. Annual picnic, celebrating festivals, announcing personal and professional achievements in jovial style have become a tradition here. This allows the team to have some breathing space as well as playing a major role in

strengthening the bondage between team members. This year, the cards team arranged picnic for themselves and their family members, one in Cox’s Bazar and one in Gazipur. We celebrated the first day of spring, “Pohela Falgun”, the Women’s Day and the formal launch of ‘Service Excellence Campaign’ at our department in a bright and breezy fashion.

I would like to end this story by echoing a century old proverb – “every end is the beginning of another end”. As the leader of the cards team, I proudly claim that this team of 387 members has proved this proverb right by setting milestones after milestones, one after another. We will keep on doing wonders.

Merchant Acquiring started its journey with American Express in May 2009. During that time, not even a single American Express merchant was available in the market except some 5-star hotels. The task in hand was massive; expanding throughout the Bangladesh market within the shortest period of time with a high margin.

To meet this challenge, it was very important to create an effective team. Our DMD & CCO & COO & Head of Projects, Mashrur Arefin, came forward with the idea to make this effective team with the following key steps:

• Improving communication

• Making the workplace more enjoyable

• Self motivation

• Getting to know each other

• Getting everyone "on the same page", including goal setting

• Teaching the team self-regulation strategies

• Helping participants to learn more about themselves (Identifying strengths and weaknesses)

• Improving team productivity

• Practicing effective collaboration with team members

The outcome was SUPERB! We launched American Express card with 1300 merchants on the very first day! This is a record which will surely remain unbeaten for a long time to come.

We have done lots of things during the last 3 years. But we never ran a deposit campaign for all employees until January 2011.

This time, we launched our first ever deposit campaign “for all”, meaning all employees of the bank starting from its direct sales executives to the Managing Director. This initiative was launched to face the cash crunch all the banks were facing due to the volatile situation of the money market. And that was a big campaign by all counts. We had a whooping target of collecting Tk. 600 crore in new deposits in just two months time. And, we did it! All 3,000 staff members of the bank worked together, till they achieved what they set out to achieve. It only goes to show our commitment for our bank, and how we can come together as one family and achieve uphill targets.

Target was allocated to all employees according to the employee job grade. Every single employee of the bank visited his/her family and friends to collect as much deposit as possible. As a result, we acquired more than Tk. 800 crore of new deposits during the campaign period and our net deposit base grew by more than Tk. 600 crore.

Following divisions even exceeded their given targets; Global Markets and Transaction Banking exceeded it by 316%, Corporate and Investment Banking by 288%, SME Banking by 137%, MD’s Secretariat by 134%, Retail Banking by 129% and so on.

Ali Eebteshar Hossain of Corporate Banking became the top individual performer, who brought Tk. 50 crore deposits, followed by S M Zabed Chowdhury of Corporate Banking who brought Tk. 47.97 crore, Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Area Head, Dhaka, Corporate Banking who brought Tk. 30 crore and Badrudduza Chowdhury, Head of SME Banking who brought Tk. 26 crore.

Regular capacity of our processing unit (Service Delivery department) was to open a maximum of 150 Fixed Deposit Accounts per day. But, during the campaign period, the department opened more than 300 FD accounts per day.

The campaign proved that if everyone moves forward together, then success automatically takes care of itself.

City Bank has declared the year 2011 as the ‘Year of Service Excellence’. RMD is not behind others in this mission. Last year, there had been some remarkable achievements at RMD that gathered high praises throughout the bank.

Some of the few outstanding works of RMD are worth mentioning. The Expense Tracker Module (ETM) is one in particular. ETM has been developed for the Finance division to help track all the expenses within the bank. This module also helps to analyze the cost cutting initiatives thus aiding in achieving cost efficiency for the company and currently, this is the only source of detailed analysis of the expenditure of the bank.

Another noticeable work of RMD is the Value at Risk (VaR) model. VaR model for Treasury department has been developed to measure the risk of bank's market exposure. The flexibility of web based VaR is that the risk of individual stock of portfolio can be calculated and at the same time, overall risk of portfolio can be measured at any time depending on data availability.

A lot of “control” jobs have been delivered by RMD to various departments among which, the Bad Score Calculation Module

(BSCM) is another one. BSCM, has been developed for SME-S segment which shows the list of which loan quality is degrading. In addition to it, Transition Matrix for SMA/NPL account has also been developed which shows the transition of all the loan account between two quarters.

These are the many works that have been done by Risk Management Department (RMD) in the last year which clearly indicates that RMD is not only working for its own, but for City Bank as a whole. While saying this, some additional models were created, such as the denomination for Finance, EMI calculator (monthly/quarterly basis) for CRM, Front Desk Management System (FDMS) and Dispatch Management System (DMS) for General Admin, and File Management System for the Senior Management. Recently, RMD started working to establish Enterprise-wide Risk Management (ERM) under which credit risk, market risk, and operational risk of the bank will be measured and managed.

We, the RMD, expect to thrive in our way through the bumpy roads and excel in our journey with the goal of delivering the best and ultimately keeping our customers satisfied as it is ‘The Year of Service Excellence’.

A magical moment occured when City Bank brought the first ever short-code number for its Call Center in the banking industry! We have seen a lot of enthusiasm amongst the customers, employees and other stakeholders.

It was a grand evening at Radisson Water Garden Hotel when the AMEX Corporate Card was launched on 9 October, 2010. On the same day, City Bank Call Center went live with the short-code 16234. From all mobile operators and BTCL numbers, anyone can now make a call to 16234. City Bank cardmembers are now just one call away for any services needed.

City Bank can now serve more customers than ever. Customer satisfaction started increasing proportionately. City Bank Call Center has also been AMEX compliant all along.

While giving the best to the customers, City Bank Call Center has always been a great place to work too. To make our work place enjoyable, we, at the Call Center, celebrate various festivals with a lot of enthusiasm and energy. Our highlights were the celebration of New Year, 1st Day of Falgun, and Valentine’s Day. We believe that the team is like our family with whom we spend eight hours everyday of our life. Thus, we recently have started celebrating employee birthdays too.

As a team, we have achieved a lot, and we have come a long way too. We believe we will keep setting higher standards and newer examples in the industry.

2011 - THE YEAR OF SERVICE EXCELLENCE

“Excellence is an art won through training and habituation. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit” – Aristotle.

The same thing is true for all service industries, including ours. To achieve ‘Service Excellence’, we need to get habituated with the practice of providing superior service. Pretending to do so will not take us far. In the long run, service excellence has to be implanted in the heart of every City Bank employee. Only then we can excel and exceed in this industry. It is the vision of our honorable Chairman, Aziz Al Kaiser and our Managing Director and CEO, K Mahmood Sattar, to see City Bank as the leading service provider. To make this dream come true, the theme for this year is set as ‘2011 – The Year of Service Excellence’. It is the top priority to put special focus on the quality of our service this year.

To make it a successful year of service excellence, a good number of initiatives have already been put into action. By circulating an internal circular, the Managing Director and CEO has instructed every employee to give full attention to customer service and to make the best possible effort to ensure ‘pleasant service experience’ for each interaction with the customers. A commemorative inscription on ‘Service Excellence’ theme was formally launched during ‘Retail Banking Conference’, held in February 2011 where a ‘commitment to out-serve’ from our Chairman and Managing Director was inscripted. This commemorative inscription will be put on display after an oath-taking ceremony at all the 99 branches and SME service centers throughout the year. Through this oath, all our employees commit to deliver superior service to our customers. The commemorative inscription represents the symbol of commitment that we need to show towards our customers. We believe this message would prompt and encourage our service personnels in providing quality service to the customers on a regular basis.

And this will be followed by various other initiatives from Service Quality department throughout the year. Learning development programs like trainings, workshops, team building sessions, focus group sessions and counseling sessions, surveys like mystery shopping survey, telephone manner survey and cash area satisfaction survey, service campaigns, online product quiz, electronic queue management, online complaint cell and many more are coming up soon. Every single employee of this bank will be directly or indirectly engaged in all the above activities and sessions and all of their proactive participations and feedbacks would help to formulate a structured way out to bring ‘excellence’ in our services.

Shubho Noboborsho 1418!

On the first day of the Bangla New Year 1418, we, the City Bank employees, came together in hundreds to warmly welcome the Bangla New Year at the Borsho Boron fair of City Bank in a very colorful and festive mood.

The gates to the fair were opened at 3.30 pm and with every passing minute, people started pouring in with their family members clad in white and red. The Borsho Boron program was set in motion with the ever famous “Esho he boishak” chorus. The song set the festive mood in the fair where people were enjoying the cultural show, exciting rides on the Nagordola and frantic shopping spree at the stalls. Following the chorus, the stage was brought to life with the lively performance of Prithi & Bithi (daughters of Mahesh Chandra Sarma of Corporate Banking) and Rahin (son of A. K. M. Ayub Ullah of Legal Division).

Their enthusiasm and confidence set the tone for the City Bank employees who performed after the kids’ sections. The City Bank employee performance started with “Shurjo doye tumi” by Md Babul Hossain Hawladar of Principal Office. Next came the famous song “Ami shunechi shedin tumi” by Papiya Chowdhury, an MT at City Bank. Then, Pulok Debnath of Operations Risk, Retail Division played the magic of his flute through the melodious “Ore Neel Doriya”. This was followed by a recitation from Sajal Ahmed, ARM of Uttara Branch; Hawaiian Guitar played by Ghulam

Muhammed Moin Uddin, BSSM, Tongi branch and dance performed by Rozina Habib, CSO of Uttara branch.

There were eight stalls all around the ground which showcased handicrafts by Sadia Afrin of Posta Branch, clothes from the boutique of Kayak, arranged by Fakruddin Ali Ahmed Rajib of Retail Banking Division and Ogaan signature collection, arranged by Shazia Afroz of Brand Communications & Marketing. The rest were stalls which carried food items like fresh fruit juice arranged by Isbat of HR, ice cream, Fuchka & Chatpati, Jhaal Muri, and many such mouthwatering, light bites. The most visited and queued stall was the Juice stall and the toy stall. Children of our City Bank employees thoroughly enjoyed buying the colorful toys and riding the Nagordola.

The biggest attraction of the fair was the monkey dance, where people, regardless of their age, flocked to watch the tricks the monkey had up his sleeves. The magic show and the puppet show were not to stay behind on the popularity scale. People with their children were fighting to get a seat at the front to get a clear and good view of the charm of magic and puppet show.

We must say that this first ever Borsho Boron fair organized by City Bank was a success, and this success was only possible through your participation and enthusiasm. We hope to have such participation in our future events as well. Thank you once again for all your participation.

‘RONG TULITE AMAR DESH’:CITY BANK CHILDREN’S ART COMPETITION 2010

For the first time ever, City Bank arranged a Children’s Art Competition in celebration of the Victory Day on 16 December, 2010 at the City Bank Centre. The event came to life with the enthusiastic participation of around 70 children and more than 200 people including family members of our colleagues, who joined in for the celebration.

All the participating children were handed a Certificate of Participation along with attractive gifts by Head of Human Resources, Abdus Salam Bhuiyan, with 12 children from all the four categories (3 from each) awarded as winners. Shoma Zahid, spouse of our Managing Director and CEO, K Mahmood Sattar, who was also the Chief Guest of the event, handed over the prizes to the winners.

The event became even more colorful and fun-filled for all the children, as well as the parents, where they enjoyed face painting, playing with the clowns and having their favorite candy floss.

Our MD and CEO, K Mahmood Sattar, also visited the event and encouraged the participating children.

The event was an opportunity where we could enjoy with our family members an occasion outside our busy work life. It was initiated by the HR Division and was jointly organized by a team comprising of members from HR, General Administration, and the Brand Communications & Marketing team. Special appreciation goes to these teams for the hard work they have put in.

As a part of the continuous initiatives to enhance employee engagement, HR Division recently arranged the City Friendly Cricket Tournament

in March, 2011. The tournament was held from 17-18 March at the Gulshan Youth Club field.

A total of 4 teams, chosen from all the divisions of City Bank,

participated in the fight for the trophy. The teams were:

• Team 1: Black Cats (Retail)

• Team 2: Rockers (Wholesale Banking + SME + CPTSU)

• Team 3: City Warriors (CRM + SAMD + RMD + CAD +

Operations + PMO)

• Team 4: Blue Thunder (HR + IT + Fin + General Admin +

Legal + Brands and Com + ICC + Share Division)

These 4 teams competed with each other during the preliminary

2 twenty-twenty matches on the first day, March 17. The first

match was between Black Cats Vs Blue Thunder followed by the

second between Rockers Vs City Warriors on the same day.

In Match-1, Black Cats won by 64 runs against Blue Thunder and

moved to the final. In the other match, City Warriors comfortably

dominated Rockers and in the end, City Warriors won convincingly by 80 runs and qualified as the other finalist to play against the Black

Cats.

The final match between Black Cats and City Warriors was held on March 18, in which, Black Cats (Retail Banking) took the champion’s

trophy by beating City Warriors by 79 runs.

Manosh Kumar Kundu, Officer, RFC department was announced the ‘Man of The Match’ for his brilliant all-round performance of 54 runs,

2 wickets and 2 catches in the final.

The tournament turned out to be of pure fun and enjoyment, filled with excitement unleashing the spirit of cricket and City Bank.

Every year, March 8 is celebrated globally for the economic, political and social achievements of women. This year, we marked the 100th year celebration of International Women’s Day.

Keeping this essence in mind, for the very first time, City Bank celebrated International Women’s Day, organized by HR to honor the women of City Bank The theme of the event was “Pathway to Decent Work for Women and Women Empowerment”. Around 80 women from different divisions of City Bank were present at the event. The selection was done in a random manner, making sure that women from every division and every level was present.

By 4:30 pm, the La Vita hall of Lakeshore hotel in Banani was full with graceful ladies looking even more so in purple. The program started with an Audio Visual as a tribute to women and their achievements. Three of the very prominent women personalities working in different sectors of Bangladesh were kind enough to join us at the event as guests. They were Ayesha Aziz Khan, Director, Summit Group, Jasmin Manjoor, Senior Consultant and Coordinator, Dermatology Department, Apollo Hospital and Rubaba Dawla, Chief Service Officer, Airtel Bangladesh Ltd. Each

of them shared their valuable experiences with everyone else focusing on the history of International Women’s Day and how it all started. They put focus on the fact on how important it is for a woman to believe in herself and take challenges without any hesitation or fear. After the esteemed guests’ speeches, three of City Bank’s senior female members took the stage and shared their experiences as a working mother, as a professional, and as an individual. They were Mahia Juned, Head of Operations, Parul Das, Head of Finance and Nasrin Akhter, BSSM, Gulshan Avenue Branch.

K Mahmood Sattar, our CEO and Managing Director, spoke about the role of women in society and in everyday life and how it is important for every one of us, especially the women, to have a positive attitude towards all the things around. Last but certainly not the least, the forum was made open for all to speak up during the ‘Open Discussion’ session, which was truly one of the highlights of the event. It was through this open discussion that the ladies got a chance to speak up and share their part of stories as women in everyday life and how challenging and difficult it is to successfully maintain the balance between work and family.

Life is not only about work, work and work; it is also about blending work with fun and relaxation. And this fun, when planned with colleagues from work, proves to be a great team building ground as well. Realizing this, a picnic was arranged by Cards Acquiring Department taking all our colleagues from Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna to Cox’s Bazar from 4-5 February, 2011.

The picnic was a platform for all of us to come together as ONE. We thoroughly enjoyed the two days, which had loads of fun-filled activities like – mind blowing DJ nights and exclusive buffet dinner at Pacific Café, a sea-side restaurant.

One of the highlights of the picnic was a session called “EXPRESS YOUR IMPRESSION / SHARE YOUR FEELINGS”, which took place on the last day of the picnic. Most of the members participated in the session with a lot of enthusiasm and frankness.

On our way back to Dhaka, we took some time off and explored the Dula Hazara Safari Park (Bangabanhdu Safari Park) and Chakaria, two very beautiful natural parks.

We really had a wonderful time at the picnic. All of us from the Merchant Acquiring Team hope that we become a part of such picnics in the future as well.

To rejuvenate the future, to develop team bonding among the members and to create future leaders, taking a break from the workload is a must. To ease the mental stress and to take a break from the busy work schedule, a family Day-Out program was organized by Credit Admin Department (CAD) at the Sreemangal Tea Resort from 4-5 March, 2011.

The Sreemangal Tea Resort is one of the most beautiful contemporary holiday resorts, built by British consultants to suit their peaceful dwelling in the midst of tea estates with a magnificent landscape consisting of more than 25 acres of green hills and hilltops. The resort campus is gifted with a scenic beauty featuring modern interior designs and architecture, outdoor park, swimming pool, lawn tennis, table tennis and badminton courts. The resort is conveniently located near the Sreemangal town, well connected with Dhaka, approximately 170 km away from the capital.

Our long awaited and much talked Annual Day-out program started on 4 March, 2011, at 7:45 am, from Shahbag National Museum towards the destination of Sreemangal Tea Resort with joy n’ smile. As per pre-fixed schedule, we took a break at the Tongi Bata Shoe store, where we met our AMD and CRO, Ehsan Khasru and Head of the CAD, Taher Jamil and their family members. The journey was brought to life through the songs, laughter and cheers of the 52 members of the trip.

When we arrived at Sreemangal, we are stunned by the beauty of the green tea gardens and hills. In one word, it was awesome. We reached the Tea Resort at 12:30 pm. On our way to our hilltop cottages, we felt that the whole surrounding was calmly welcoming us. The beauty and the serenity of the place had us all

speechless and lost for a while. After settling down in our cottages, it was time for some splash in the blue waters of the swimming pool followed by a great sumptuous lunch. At 4:00 pm in the afternoon, we enjoyed cricket, where our AMD and CRO participated with his team winning the match. We also arranged pillow passing game for our ‘bhabis’.

The evening was made memorable by the beautiful songs of Taher Jamil and a breathtaking dance from E. Khasru and bhabi, who were celebrating their 25 years of togetherness. Each and every one in the audience applauded and appreciated this rare sight. To add local flavor to this celebration, the Monipuri tribals displayed their dance and martial arts. Following this was the mouth-watering Bar-B-Que dinner. E. Khasru left us that evening to attend an official matter. Our late-night DJ party started at 10 pm and the dance floor was fully occupied till midnight. Everyone continued to dance till their last drops of energy.

On the following day, we went to Laua Chorra Eco Park to see one of the deep eco forests of Bangladesh. We could hear cameras clicking left and right, everyone trying to capture the beauty through their lenses. Then, we visited the Monipuri village where they showcased their colorful garments. And we bought some garments for our near and dear ones.

It was now time to come back to Dhaka. After having our lunch, we started our journey towards home, leaving behind great memories of some great times we had as a team. Special thanks to Mamun and Mainul for their relentless support in organizing such a wonderful Annual Day-out program.

When we face challenges in life, we realize how difficult it is to endure the cruel side of reality. Recently during winter I had the

opportunity to be a witness to such a reality. During this winter, one of the initiatives of City HR was to stand by those misfortunate people

who do not have the minimum capacity to protect themselves against the sheer bite of the cold winter season. The idea was to collect warm

clothes from across the organization and distribute them to these deprived people.

In line with our vision to be the leading bank in the country with the best

practices and highest social commitment, City Bank family has always

extended its support for those who need it the most. Keeping the harsh winter

weather in mind, this time the campaign was initiated on 26 January, 2011 by

asking the staff members to donate warm clothes. On 5 February 2011, we

visited the heart of Dhaka to distribute these clothes to many people. For all of us, it was an experience unlike anything we have had before

as we witnessed most of the people were shivering under the

merciless cold winter night. They were lying in the street,

clustered together to gain a little warmth. As we arrived with

help, we were almost surrounded by them. They were

overjoyed to see such a noble act and prayed to Almighty for

us.

We distributed the clothes to more than 100 people in

Motijheel, Kamlapur and Gulistan. Though we might say it

was a really small help with over 40% of people surviving

below poverty line, I believe it was still a noble and good thing

to do. This will inspire us to go large scale in the future

for sure.

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup was the tenth Cricket World Cup and was hosted in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. It was Bangladesh's first time co-hosting a World Cup. Fourteen nations participated in the tournament from 19 February to 2 April, 2011. The grand opening ceremony was held on 17 February, 2011 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka.

The official ticketing partner of ICC was ‘KyaZoonga’. Being the winner of MoneyGram’s “Best Corridor Collaboration in South Asia”, City Bank was selected by MoneyGram as the ticketing partner in Bangladesh by associating with ‘KyaZoonga’. City Bank started selling tickets through its countrywide selected 50 branches. Ticket sales of the World Cup have been a massive success, which began on 2 January, 2011. Within 5 days, majority of the e-vouchers of tickets of the eight matches held in Bangladesh were sold out. The tickets of the four practice matches were sold out by 28 January. Sales had seen a tremendous success across each of the sixty four (64) districts. Besides Dhaka and Chittagong, Khulna and Rajshahi were among the top-selling districts.

As per the previously distributed e-vouchers, phase 2 of this was the selling of the original printed tickets through the four branches of City Bank. The completely centralized ticket selling system has allowed for absolute transparency in the selling, distributing and reporting of tickets, which has helped to ensure that Bangladesh cricket is the biggest beneficiary of such an efficient and transparent system, establishing the good brand image of City Bank.

CORPORATE CARD LAUNCHIn the year of 2010, another milestone was set by City Bank and American Express with the launch of the corporate cards in Bangladesh.

On 9 October, 2010, American Express Corporate Cards were launched at a press meet at ‘The Westin Dhaka’, followed by a gala evening at the Radisson Water Garden Hotel. The event was attended by high officials from American Express and City Bank. The theme of the event was–“Evolution of business in the sub-continent and then narrowing it down to the context of Bangladesh.” The topic was broad enough to include the early ages of business transactions, who were the early businessmen of the region, the kind of currency that was used as well as how credit transactions came about. The concept and theme of the event being the business heritage of the country seamlessly fitted with the payoff line of the American Express Corporate Credit Cards – ‘Real Business. Real Solutions.’ The event started of with local tunes, dialects and ambience; however, the inclusion of western and jazz melodies by the renowned Bangladeshi band ‘Renaissance’ added toppings to the cultural platter. Hence with this performance, the evening moved from the national spectrum to an international height.

AMERICAN EXPRESS BANGLADESH OPEN 2011 PROFESSIONAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPCity Bank organized the 2011 professional international golf championship this year yet again just like last year. From 26-29 January, 2011, the ‘American Express Bangladesh Open 2011’ witnessed professional and amateur golfers from Dhaka tee-off alongside some of the top players of the Professional Golf Tour India (PGTI).

This year, Gaganjeet Bhullar from India took home the ‘American Express Bangladesh Open 2011’ professional golf trophy with last year’s defending champion, Md. Siddikur Rahman, as the runner-up. Through this golf championship, AMEX reached out to its hundreds of avid golf lovers, who were also its Cardmembers.

Sohail R. K. Hussain, AMD and CBO, City Bank and Air Marshal Shah Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, Chief of Air Staff, Bangladesh Air Force were present at the ceremony.

City Bank and American Express held its Merchant Workshop for managing and building the merchant business on 10 June, 2010, at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel. This was the first of its kind in Bangladesh. City Bank’s AMD and CBO, Sohail R K Hussain and Cheng Heng Chew, VP and Head of New Business Partnerships, AMEX inaugurated the workshop.

The workshop also had top officials from American Express Global Network Services (GNS), representatives from the Japan, Asia-Pacific and Australia (JAPA) region and City Bank. Around 250 merchants participated in this workshop and directly interacted with all the top officials from AMEX and City Bank. There were discussions on developing new market entry plans, forging strategic alliances and leading new initiatives for American Express Cards in Bangladesh. A musical evening was also organized where pop singer Mila sparked up the evening with her hit numbers.

MANIK MIA AVENUE BEAUTIFICATION PROJECTForests once covered half of the earth’s landmass. Now they cover less than one-tenth. The year 2011 has been declared as the ‘International Year of Forests’ for protecting the planet’s lungs better. City Bank actively contributes and believes in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which indicates the inclusion of public interest into our corporate decision making process and the honoring of a triple bottom line: People, Planet and Profit. One of the bank’s initiatives towards the ‘International Year of Forests’ is the beautification of the Manik Mia Avenue. With continuous involvement and sponsoring since 2009, the tree-lined mid island of the road not only protects the planet’s lungs but also makes the place look like an oasis to the people passing by.

The Manik Mia Avenue beautification project is being consistently maintained by City Bank for a long time now. This year, a few modifications were done on the project which was appreciated throughout.

I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories…

The first story is about Connecting the Dots

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except at the last minute they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this

calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

Second story is about love and loss

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents’ garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

STEVE JOBS’ SPEECH

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the world’s first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

Third story is about death

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You have already been exposed. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan in the morning and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.

I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

In the mid 1970s, Stewart and his team put out a final issue of The Whole Earth Catalog. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

The ninth world championship, Cricket World Cup 2007, was held in the West Indies. Aussies defeated Sri Lanka claiming their third consecutive World Cup victory.

The logo for the 2007 cricket world cup showed a cricketer on a beach which represents beach cricket or cricket played in the Caribbean as the last world cup was held in West Indies.

Mello was the name of mascot in 2007 world cup of cricket. Mello was like an orange raccoon like creature, who wears a blue short-sleeved shirt over a white vest, a golden pendant, khaki trousers and blue canvas shoes. Mello was used as an initiative to create awareness of HIV during 2007 world cup.

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup is the tenth Cricket World Cup and is being played in Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka. It is Bangladesh's first time co-hosting a World Cup.

WHY DO CLOCKS RUN CLOCKWISE? Early clocks were sundials. Mechanical clocks were invented in the northern hemisphere by inventors who were trying to mimic the sundials by making models of the sun's movement in the sky.

To watch the sun from the northern hemisphere, you have to face south. Then the sun will rise on your left and pass over your head to set on your right. Since the hour hand on the clock was clockwise. The hands are actually modeled after the shadow on a sundial.
