1. Executive summary

Organizations are increasingly using workstyle transformation strategies tocreate people-centric environments. These environments are designed tosupport diverse workstyles and enable scenarios such as working remotely from

tablet devices, smartphones, and laptops.

Key benefits of embracing workstyle transformation include adoption of naturaluser interaction technology (such as touch, gesture, and speech), improvedbusiness agility from adopting innovative ways of working, better employeemorale, reduced costs, and improved security compliance.

This paper discusses some common business scenarios and how the newWindows 8 operating system supports and enhances these scenarios.Information regarding trends and motivations for the design of Windows 8 isalso included.

2. Microsoft visionToday, people work in multiple locations and on a range of devices. Apps anddata roam across diverse platforms, networks, and systems, and peopleconnect more seamlessly through cloud computing scenarios and ubiquitousconnectivity capabilities.

Microsoft took advantage of this increased connectivity and advances intechnology when designing Windows 8. These technological advances include:

Thinner and lighter form factors (for example, tablets and ultrabook laptops)

Long battery life (more than eight hours) through reduced energy consumption

Sensors that track position (GPS) and motion (accelerator) of devices, whichenables new types of apps and experiences

Standards such as Bluetooth and near field communications (NFC), whichprovide alternative options for devices to exchange information and connectto peripherals

These advances are pushing enterprises to adjust their strategies to provideways to support modern workstyles. Microsoft sees the rise of naturalinteraction as fueling new ways of working through touch, gesture, and speech.

Multiple work modes have become the norm as people choose to use differentkinds of devices to work both inside and outside the office.

Mobile workers who have direct contact with customers can benefit byexploring innovative ways of engaging with them, which can increase customerloyalty and revenue.

3. Business motivation

Embracing a workstyle transformation strategy provides compellingopportunities for organizations. For example, they can explore innovative waysto conduct business with customers, which can potentially lead to improvedcustomer experiences and increased revenue. Within an enterprise, workstyle

transformation provides opportunities to attract and support a multi-generational workforce while improving productivity and mobility. Adoptingsuch a strategy also provides ways to reduce cost and improve security bymodernizing IT infrastructure and devices.

3.1 Productivity

Employees can increase their productivity by using devices that provide accessto information when they are away from their desks. Such devices enableaccess to email, instant messaging, calendar, voice, video, and social networksat any time and from any location. These capabilities lead to increased mobility,and the nearly ubiquitous availability of broadband connectivity enablesemployees to respond faster to the needs of the enterprise and customers.

3.2 Business agility

Enterprises are seeking new ways to engage with customers, and workstyletransformation enables new scenarios that engage customers throughcapabilities such as touch and gesture.1 However, to take advantage of thesescenarios, enterprises need to adopt the proper application deploymentstrategies.

Microsoft and other organizations have experienced increases in business agilityas a result of the introduction of mobile devices and flexible workstyles. Thesechanges are achieved through increased mobility that reduces the amount oftime spent traveling and increases ability to access apps and data fromanywhere. Mobile devices are shifting user behavior, blurring the line betweenwork and life.

3.3 Attract and retain people

Todays modern workplace comprises a mix of generations with varyingtechnical capabilities, expectations, and workstyles. People who were bornbetween the late 1970s and the early 2000s, referred to as Millennials, considersocial media and collaborative tools to be indispensable options, whereas othergenerations may consider these tools to be no more than a means to improveexisting processes.

To attract and retain a range of employees, organizations are adopting richconsumerization of IT environments in which workers can use their own devicesas a way to improve workplace satisfaction.

3.4 Standardization reduces costs

Cost reduction can be achieved effectively by standardizing on a singleoperating system.

Seton Hall University recently shared its experience of standardizing onWindows 8based tablets and ultrabooks. Seton Hall CIO Stephen G. Landryexplained, In designing our ubiquitous computing program, weve found thatstandardization enables us to provide excellent computers to our students atthe lowest overall cost.2

For organizations that are currently running Windows Vista or Windows 7, theadoption of Windows 8 can be straightforward because the new operatingsystem is capable of running on existing Windows Vista and Windows7certified hardware.

Those organizations that are still running Windows XP will realize additionalbenefits by moving to Windows 8. Windows XP is already more than a decadeold and research has shown that staying with older versions of Windows costsorganizations more time and resources. A recent IDC white paper3 concludedthat organizations that continue to retain a Windows XP environment not onlyare leaving themselves exposed to security risks and support challenges, butalso are wasting budget dollars that would be better used in modernizing theirIT investments.

Organizations that have heterogeneous environmentsIT infrastructures that

run a variety of different operating systemswill realize cost benefits byreducing duplicate IT capabilities such as device management and applicationdeployment. Because Windows 8 accommodates new scenarios the need foradditional operating systems is eliminated.

4. Key trends drivingworkstyle transformation

Media tablets became available to consumers just a few years ago, and now

new form factors and device types are readily available to consumers andenterprises. Although more than 93 percent of PCs run some version ofWindows today,4 it was clear several years ago that peoples expectations ofcomputing devices were changing. The following subsections describe a few ofthe trends that are influencing workstyle transformation.

4.1 Always connected

Connectivity is nearly ubiquitous. In the past, devices were designed aroundassumptions of optional, limited, and sporadic connectivity. Today, nearlyeverything people do on their devices assumes they have connectivity to theInternet. Wi-Fi is available in more public locations, and an increasing numberof devices also include the ability to connect to wireless mobile networks that

support standards such as 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE. Where connectivity was oncethe exception, it is now becoming the rule.

4.2 Natural user interactions

New ways of interacting with devices are emerging, such as touch, speech, andthe use of gestures.5 This trend increases the need for people-centric devicedesign and apps to make computing interfaces more natural and simple to use,which will help reduce the learning curve for new technology.

4.3 People centric

There has been a marked change in the ways people use their devices. Incontrast to traditional activities such as writing and creating documents, peopleuse technology to read and socialize, and keep up with friends, pictures, and

music. Communications tend to occur in short, frequent bursts. Much of thisactivity takes place inside web browsers that make use of the latestadvancements in HTML and other web technologies.

4.4 Shifting from desktops to mobile PCs and devices

In 2009, Windows-based desktops comprised 44 percent of the worldwideWindows market and laptops comprised 56 percent. Now, just three years later,more than 61 percent of the Windows-based PCs sold are laptops and thetrend toward mobility is rapidly increasing. Among consumers in the UnitedStates buying PCs this year, more than 76 percent will purchase laptopstheabsolute number of all US desktops sold will be fewer than the number oftablets sold in 2012. Even in enterprises, laptops are now purchased more than

half the time6

.

4.5 Cloud computing enables workstyle transformation

There is a transformational shift underway across the entire IT ecosystem. Thistransformation is being driven by an exponential growth of devices used forsmarter, more personalized apps, which in turn create an explosion of data andthe need for more computing power. It is a world of connected devices andcontinuous services that are increasingly enabled by cloud computing. Thistransformation is leading to dramatic changes in how computing, storage, andnetworking come together in scalable, automated, shared, and adaptiveplatforms that deliver modern apps to power the worlds computingexperiences.

5. Enabling workstyletransformation

As mentioned in the previous sections, the demands placed on IT organizationstoday to remain competitive have changed dramatically. People expect newtechnology that is easily adoptable and supports working in multiple locationswith easy access to the information they need to perform their jobs. Now morethan ever, people need devices to be flexible and mobile and organizationsneed reliability, productivity, and security. To address these needs, Microsoft hasreimagined Windows. The new and enhanced features in Windows 8 makeeveryday tasks easier and more enjoyable, while also improving on thefundamentals.

Windows 8 delivers a fast and fluid experience that includes the mobility,performance, and security features to support business needs, all of whichmake it one of the most personalized operating systems for business customers

and their employees.

Customers have already started sharing with Microsoft how Windows 8 featuresare providing new business opportunities that give their organizationsimmediate valuefrom improved mobility and productivity to increasedmanagement functionality. Some of these new features include new apps, newhardware experiences, innovations to enable bring your own device (WindowsTo Go) scenarios, enhanced security, secure network access (DirectAccess), anddesktop virtualization advancements.

The following subsections describe some key features that can benefitorganizations seeking to foster workstyle transformation with Windows 8.7

5.1 Experience the new start screen

5.2 Apps take center stage

Windows 8style apps help users focus on their tasks and complete themquicker by displaying only relevant information. Feedback from customers whoare using Windows 8 with line-of-business (LOB) apps indicates that they areexperiencing increased productivity. Consider the business possibilities with newWindows 8 apps both for internal use (LOB) as well as for creating new

innovative experiences for their customers.

Windows 8 style apps execute on top of new runtime (Windows Runtime,WinRT) that co-exists with the .NET runtime. Key advantages of this newapproach include:

Common user interactions that help reduce the learning curve for users (forexample, built-in search and sharing)

App-to-app communication model (so-called contracts) that providesinformation sharing between apps

Faster development of apps by providing a common app infrastructure

Support for multiple platforms such as Intel x86, x64, and ARM System on achip (SOC)

Application sandboxing, which lowers application management cost

5.3 Business ready on a wide range of hardware

Windows 8 runs on a wide range of hardwarefrom tablets to laptops to all-in-one devices that have large high-definition screens. The new operatingsystem combines the convenience and mobility of a tablet with the productivityof a laptop or PC.

5.3.1 Lower power consumption leads to longer battery life

Windows 8 advances the innovations of Windows 7 in multiple ways. BecauseWindows 8 can run on low-power CPUs, users can now work much longer on asingle charge of their devices battery. Lower power requirements are extendedby the growing number of energy-efficient devices. In addition, adopting thesmall form factor power model introduces the capability of very low-power idlestates while enabling constant connectivity and instant-on features to Windows8based PCs.

5.3.2 More options for sharing information and using wireless devices

Support for innovations such as near field communications (NFC) on Windows8 devices enable information sharing (for example, business contact cards)between devices. Another way to take advantage of this built-in technology isto connect wireless devices such as keyboards, mice, headphones, and speakersby simply tapping them against your device.

5.4 Built on a solid foundation

Windows 8 is built on the foundation of Windows 7, but has been improved ona number of fronts. You can install Windows 8 on the same hardware thatsupports Windows Vista and Windows 7, or on new Windows 8based devices.Microsoft understands that people and organizations often have older appsthat they need to use, and Windows 8 is designed with the enterprise in mind.Windows 8 offers:

Speed. Windows 8 provides improved performance and system reliability.Even on lower-power systems, Windows 8 is responsive. PCs start morequickly, apps run faster, and users are generally more secure.

Compatibility. Windows 8 automatically supports a wide range of devices,

including printers, cameras, media players, and displays. The new operatingsystem is designed so that when you plug in your device, it works withouthaving to make any adjustments. Windows 8 also provides a number ofnew features that make it effortless to connect your PC to available networksand help keep you connected as you change locations. Windows 8 connectsto one network at a time and prioritizes networks that are typically lessexpensive and faster; it will also automatically switch you from a lower-

prioritized network to a higher-prioritized network if one becomes available. Better protected. Windows 8 has built-in antimalware protection to boost

security. If you dont have another malware scanner installed, the antimalwareapplication monitors and helps protect your PC against viruses and othermalware in real time, and detects and removes malware if your PC becomesinfected. Windows 8 also provides new ways for antimalware software tominimize any impact on system performance.
