Dear Readers,

Summer is blazing hot this time and I see lots

and lots of people are going into movie theaters.

More people want to watch movies in theaters and

that’s a great sign to “ Stop Piracy and Save

Cinema “ There are a few things I am going to ad-

dress in this note.

June is always a tough month for Movies, because

of the school re openings and the teens are busy

hunting for college. That’s the bad news for cine-

ma and the good news is that the heat will be gone.

Speaking of heat, I want everyone to think of the

technicians, especially the light men who work

in the summer, imagine carry a very hot light for

hours in this sun. We never come to know the pain

they all go through for showing the artists pretty.

Thank you.

Now coming to the sensation that is going

around our Thalaivar Super Star Rajnikanth.

He is getting treated in Singapore and rejuve-

nating, as put by his family members. We should

all give him some privacy and respect his space.

On behalf of our Cinemamatters team we wish

him a speedy recovery and good health.

Singles, Music Directors are releasing them

to create some anticipation for a forth coming

movie eg. Vaanam and Mankaatha. This is a

wonderful trend and helps with the curiosity

among fans. I think everyone should be doing

the same.

The great Hollywood Actor Clint Eastwood

said,

“I’ve never met a genius. A genius to me is

someone who does well at something he hates.

Anybody can do well at something he loves -

it’s just a question of finding the subject.”

So lets all look within and find what we are good

and and go after your dream. Dream will become

true, just give it some time and keep working.

Enjoy Reading,

Sainthavi

Watching Engeyum Kadhal is like tasting ice cream on a hut sunny day. Both are cool, refresh-ing and tasty. And there is one more common thing too. Like how one should not think much about health while having ice cream, you should not care a lot about story while watching Engeyum Kadhal.

If you are ready for this, a fun-filled jolly ride awaits you, for Prabhudeva, in the company of Jayam Ravi, Hansika Motwani and Harris Jayaraj, has come out with a colourful and candifloss love story, in the name of Engeyum Kadhal.

Produced by Kalpathi S Aghoram of AGS Entertainment and released by Sun Pictures, the film speaks a lot about modern-age love through an Indian pair which meets and falls for each other in Paris, the capital city of France.

To elaborate, Kamal (Jayam Ravi) is a young entrepreneur, who comes to Paris on a vacation trip. His only aim is relaxation and he doesn’t even bothers to attend any phone calls.

There is a detective in the town (Suman), whose client wants to kill Kamal. Coming to know of this, the detective’s daughter Kayal (Hansika) goes in search of Kamal to save him from the hands of his enemy. As u would have guessed it right, cupid strikes and a love story unfolds.

Jayam Ravi steals the show as Kamal. Be it song sequences, romantic scenes or emotional episodes, the actor is at it as lover boy again, after a break in Peraanmai and Thillalangadi. And giving him enough company is Hansika Motwani, the bubbly and talented welcome addition to the list of heroines in Kollywood.

Prabhudeva’s brother and noted choreographer Raju Sundaram is there in an interesting character. If music is soul, cinematography is the body of Engeyum Kadhal, which is an interesting attempt by Prabhudeva. Go without much expectation and you will not get disappointed.

Verdict -Short and sweet

Mahatma Gandhi could well be the inspiration for the team behind Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai. For, the strength of the father of the nation and this film drected by Suseenthiran lies in one common thing- simplicity.

A humble story. Honest narration. No big faces in the lead roles. With these three things, Suseen-thiran strikes the right chord, as the film silently speaks a lot about how the face of Tamil cinema is changing of late.

On par with international standards, the movie produced by Escape Artistes Motion Pictures and distributed by Cloud Nine Movies is a big relief from suffocating crude commercial stuff, for which Kol-lywood is known for.

There is a village near Theni where residents believe that their difficulties would come to an end if they conduct a festival to Lord Azhagarsami, during which the diety will be taken around on a wooden horse.

As the Thiruvizha nears, the wooden horse goes missing. When the entire hamlet is in shock, enters a white horse and they start believe that the Almighty had sent it, hearing their prayers.

The entire village falls in love with the horse. But their happiness doesn’t long for a long time. A youngster Azhagarsami (Appukutty) comes to the village claiming the ownership of the horse, as his marriage is at stake.

From Appukutty to Saranya Mohan (who comes as Rani, Appukutty’s fiancée) to Azhagan Thamizhm-ani (village president), everyone have delivered their best. But the soul of the film is Ilayaraja’s music with cinematography and dialogues complimenting it well.

On the whole, Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai, though slow in places, is the triumph of an honest script. Kudos to Bhaskar Sakthi, the writer and Suseenthiran, the director.

Perhaps not ready to take much risk, producer Nazir and actor Vimal have tried to re-peat Kalavani magic in their second venture Eththan, by slightly rehashing the knot and with some changes to the screenplay.

But still, we find Eththan interesting and you have to laud debutant director Suresh for that. A student of master-filmmaker Balu Mahendra, Suresh in his maiden venture has done justice to his teacher’s name.

The story is very simple and it’s straight forward too. Laced with humour from scene one, Eththan keeps us engaged in most parts, though we are reminded of Kalavani.

Sathyamurthy (Vimal) is a good for nothing son of a teacher (Jayaprakash) who roams the town with his friends and borrows money from almost everyone he comes across.

A mimicry expert, his talent comes to his help while dealing with money-lenders. As it hap-pens, he meets a beautiful girl (Sanusha) one day and falls for her. And when his ladylove steps into trouble, the responsibility falls on Sathya to bail her out.

Vimal performs his role with ease, while Sanusha is simple and scintillating. Jayaprakash once again proves why he is the much wanted father of Tamil cinema these days. Others in the cast are okay.

Music for Eththan is by Taj Noor of Vamsam fame. If you are ready to bear with the deja vu feel this film provides and have some time to kill, Eththan could provide you fun.

It’s the tale of a transgender. Often a topic of ridicule and fun by filmmakers in Kollywood, Narthaki is a sincere and honest attempt by director Vijay Padma to probe into their heart and mind. She has captured on canvas the travails, suffereings of this third gender.

Vijay Padma and her producer ‘Punnagai Poo’ Geetha deserve all accolades for they have chosen a subject that has no mass elements to entice audience. It is a bold attempt to paint the problems of transgenders - both emotional and physical.

Kalki, a transgender, plays the lead role. The whole story revolves around her.

Born as Subbu, a lovable son in a village in Thanjavur, he slowly develops physical and emotional changes. Subbu decides to elope from house one day and takes refuge in Mumbai with transgender comunity is living.

Subbu turns into Kalki. As it happens Kalki gets social condemnation. But a determined soul, she de-cides to make a life of her own and learns classical dance. How she emerges triumphant in the strug-gle for survival is what the story is all about.

A sensitive issue has been handled well, but at places gives one a feel of watching a docu-drama. Na Muthukumar’s lyrics and G V Prakash’s music lends support to the script, while Kesavan’s camera captures the emotions of transgenders well. Narthaki is a different cinema made with a purpose.

Venu Aravindh, a popular face in small screen has turned to direction with Sabash Sariyana Potti. With Jayaram in his side, he has opted to go for a rib-tickler in his maiden attempt. Newcomers Sriram Karthik and Anjana Thambiratti play pivotal roles.

Jayaram evokes laughter with his actions. He imitates few popular actors of Tamil cinema in his own way playing an actor in the movie. Venu Aravindh has taken a dig at stars in tinsel town through his character. Delhi Ganesh, Mayilsamy and Vaiyapuri form part of the cast. Venu Aravindh in a dual role plays a cameo.

Gnanaguru (Sriram Karthik) is a happy man in Vadipatti village. An ardent-fan of actor JR (Jayaram), he never fails to celebrate the release of his movies. He is the role model for him. Meanwhile the story shifts on JR. His assistants Dass (Delhi Ganesh ) and Mani (Vaiyapuri), wants JR to enter politics.

Gnanaguru comes across his JR in a wedding in his village. He tries to impress him with his mimicry skills. An impressed JR urges him to try his luck in cinema. Taking his words seriously, with a bag full of dreams, Gnanaguru comes down to Chennai.

His attempts to meet JR ends in vain. As it happens, he slowly comes to know the real side of JR. He is vastly different from the one whom people see on screen. Now he takes a challenge to teach him a lesson.

Thaman has scored music and the best being Mudhal Mozhi sung by Rahul Nambiar. Jayaram is the saving grace of the movie. But he cannot do much, as cliched scenes and comedy fail to tickle the funny bone. Sriram Karthick is good in parts while Anjana Thambiratti has no major say in the movie.

Produced by V R Raghunathan, Sabash Sariyana Potti hardly serves any purpose.

Verdict - Fun and furious

Big, bigger and beautiful. This sums up Maaveeran. Set against the backdrop of an eerie theme - reincarnation - Maaveeran ( the Tamil version of Telugu hit Magadheera) unfolds on the screen with multiple shades of entertainment.

The fantasy tale speaks about reincarnation and revenge, may be an age-old theme in cinema. But what makes the movie interesting is the way director Rajamouli has presented it on the platter. The extraordinary use of computer graphics to create right visual effects casts a spell on the audience.

The story is set in 1609 AD, where the Udayagiri dynasty comes alive. Parthiban (Ram Charan) is not only the bodyguard of the beautiful princess Mitrananda (Kajal), but also the trainer of soldiers.

True to the cinema norms, the princess falls in love with her guard. Ranadev Billa (Gil Dev), the neph-ew of Udaygiri’s King, has his eyes on the kingdom and the princess, but is defeated by Parthiban. Sher Khan (Srihari), a Muslim ruler, takes advantage of the rivalry between the family members and invades the kingdom, with Ranadev Billa on his side.

In a fierce battle, both the lovers are killed. Exactly four hundred years after the incident, the four characters reincarnate in the contemporary world, playing their parts in a modern way. But the re-venge factor is supreme. How it is dealt with forms the rest of the story.

Ramcharan Teja , son of veteran actor Chiranjeevi, plays his part well.

he is impressive both as a trendy and suave bike racer and an army commander. His heroics on screen is sure to impress audience. Kajal combines beauty and elegance on screen. Dev Gill as bad-die fits the bill well while the star cast includes Sri Hari, Sarath Babu, Sunil, Brahmanandham and Mumaith khan.

Maragadhamani’s songs sets up the mood while Senthil Kumar’s cinematography and Rama Ra-jamouli’s costumes provide authenticity.

Three cheers to Geetha Arts for producing such a grand venture that provides entertainment all the way.

Verdict - Fantasy feast

An apt title for a film which reminds us many good old love stories. But at the same time, Kanden, directed by newcomer Mugil with Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Reshmi Gautam playing lead roles, is not such a bad attempt.

It is a breezy entertainer, which would impress youngsters this summer vacation. With Santhanam on board and with a fairly interesting love story, Mugil leaves a mark to a certain extent in his first film itself.

The story, as we have it, is about Vasanth (Shanthanu), who escapes from the clutches of his Natta-mai grandfather (who else than Vijayakumar) and comes to Chennai to find a girl of his choice.

In the city, he zeroes in on Narmadha (Reshmi Gautham), daughter of a police officer (Ashish Vid-yarthi) and to woo her, he claims himself a blindman. As everything goes well, Narmadha comes to know that his man is actually cheating her.

What follows are Vasanth’s attempts (with the help of friend Santhanam) to change the heart of his ladylove. As he is on the verge of convincing Narmadha, a sudden twist changes everything.

Shanthanu shines bright and we mean it really. The son of K Bhagyaraj proves himself in all depart-ments of acting. Reshmi is beautiful and acts well too. Santhanam and Ashish Vidyarthi add value to their respective roles.

Music composer Vijay Ebenezer makes a decent debut. Though director Mugil has rehashed some old scripts, Kanden could be enjoyed for its bubbliness and breeziness.

Verdict - We have it seen before

Ajith to work with Murugadoss, S J Suryah?

Get, set, go for Billa 2

Director A R Murugadoss started his career with Dheena starring Ajith. The movie went on to become a huge hit and since then, Ajith is being referred as Thala.

Likewise, director S J Suryah too started his career with Ajith, directing Vaalee, one of the best films of the Thala till date. The latest buzz doing rounds in Kollywood is that the Ultimate Star has listened to stories from both A R Mu-rugadoss and S J Suryah.

Murugadoss has reportedly narrated an one-liner to Ajith and the actor has principally agreed to do it after Billa 2. It is said that the Thala would work with S J Suryah too.

Murugadoss is currently directing Suriya for 7am Arivu while Ajith is working in Mankatha and then go ahead to complete Billa 2.

With Mankatha almost over, Ajith is all set to start Billa 2. To be directed by Chakri Toleti, the movie is a pre-quel to 2007 Ajith’s Billa. Produced by Wide Angle Crea-tions in association with the Hinduja Group company IN Entertainment, the movie would go on floors in June. Huma Qureshi, a Mumbai model, is the heroine. The others in the cast are Prabhu, Rahman and KK. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja. If sources are to be believed, Billa 2 would focus on how David, an ordinary man from the coastal Tuticorin in South Tamilnadu, becomes Billa, a dreaded underworld don, with Ajith reprising the role of the titular character. The actor upon completing Mankatha will undergo rigorous workouts and hit the gym to lose some weight. He would ap-pear as a youth in his twenties. Director Chakri Toleti says, ‘it is a big responsibility to do the movie that is a class apart in the history of Indian cinema. Billa is a legendary character and to make it a movie is a difficult task’.

Suriya’s fans are eagerly waiting to watch their star perform triple roles in 7aam Arivu, as the script is said to be breathtaking and a different one from that of his earlier movies.

Director AR Murugadoss, who’s team-ing up with Suriya after the blockbuster Ghajini, said, ‘The movie is set to hit the screens by the end of July. It will meet the expectations of fans or might even exceed it.’

Produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies, the film has music scored by Harris Jayaraj. Shruti Haasan makes her Tamil debut with this movie.

Suriya plays a trapezium artiste in a cir-cus troupe in the movie and he under-went special training for it. Close on the heels of completing it, Suriya will start working in K V Anand’s Mattran.

Where is Karthik? Actor Karthik was in the news a few weeks before the State Assembly elections. He announced his decision to contest the elections and announced names of candidates for select constituencies on behalf of his All India Naadalum Makkal Katchi During the run-up to the polls, Karthik even chose to campaign vigorously against the AIADMK com-bine, leveling a series of allegations. He said that his party candidates were harassed and kidnapped. As it happened, the election saw a huge defeat for him and his party. The question that is doing rounds is that- Where is Karthik now? Sources close to the actor-politician say that he has left for Bangalore as soon as the results were out. It is said that Karthik would be back in Chennai soon and continue his political journey. The actor, who made a comeback with Manja Velu, has signed a couple of movies and would start shooting.

K Balachander, who has been selected by the government of India for the coveted Dada Sahib Phalke award for his contribu-tion to Indian cinema, was flooded with phone calls and visitors congratulating him for the rare feat.

Tamilnadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin and Union Minister M K Ala-giri drove to his house on Saturday and congratulated him. Later, KB had an au-dition with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Meanwhile, honchos of Tamil Film Directors Asso-ciation and Tamil Film Pro-ducers Council gathered in large number to garland Balachander and congratu-late him for the honour.

It’s party time for KB

KB has more to give, says Kamal

Kamal Haasan has worked in a total of 36 films with K Balachander. He proudly calls him his father and his Guru.

Check out the Ulaga Nayagan’s reac-tions on KB winning Dada Sahib Phalke Award.

Says Kamal, ‘there is no two feeling. Only one. It is long overdue. He can probably direct a few more films if he so wishes. I am groomed by him and everybody knows that and its a father-son relationship. He’s one package - an inimitable package and I have been telling this to people.’

‘And apart from the government, the industry already respects him but they should understand the true value of it’.

’I think he should start listening to many stories. At least even if he doesn’t want to make a film, he should advise all and sundry. I was a nobody when he picked me up so was Rajini. He should now pick up boys and impart as much knowledge as he can. ‘

Hospital sources said the top actor of Tamil cinema had complained of breathlessness and fever but his condition was said to be stable. ‘There is nothing to worry about his health,’ they added.

Last Friday, Rajini was admitted to the same hospital in Chennai after he suffered from exhaustion due to dehydra-tion on the inaugural day of his period film Rana. He was

discharged the same evening.

The film is being directed by KS Ravi Kumar, and Bollywood beauty Deepika Padu-

A day after DMDK chief Vijayakanth visited Sri Ram-achandra Medical Centre to meet Rajinikanth, Friday was the turn of newly-elected MLA from Thenkasi Assembly constitu-ency and president of Nadigar Sangam Sarath Kumar to rush to the place.

Sarath Kumar, who is also the president of All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi, visited the hospital at Porur and enquired about Rajini’s health with Latha Rajnikanth.Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Sarath Kumar, said, ‘I met Latha Rajnikanth and discussed about Rajni sir’s health since he is sleeping. She said that he is recovering well and is fine.’

It may be recalled that the actor was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at SRMC on 18 May for improving his breathing pattern. Hospital sources had said he was getting appropriate treatment and his condition was stable. He was earlier admitted to the St Isabel’s Hospital in Chennai immediately after the muhurrat of his new film Rana on 29 April for suspected food poisoning and discharged the same evening.

A few days later, he was again admitted to the hospital for vi-ral fever. He was discharged after a few days and admitted at SRMC on 13 May.

Concerned over Superstar Ra-jinikanth’s health condition, scores of fans have been offering special worship in tem-ples across Tamilnadu praying for his speedy recovery.

All eyes are on Sri Ram-achandra Medical Cen-tre (SRMC) at Porur, to where Superstar Ra-jnikanth was admitted last week.

If sources are to be be-lieved, a team of spe-cialist doctors from USA have been flown to pro-vide advanced treatment. They reportedly reached Chennai on Sunday and rushed to the hospital.

Rajnikanth is recover-ing, say doctors. Accord-ing to a bulletin from the hospital Sunday evening, Rajnikanth is improving after advanced treatment. His vital parameters are steady.

Rajnikanth was admitted to the hospital for recur-rent respiratory infec-tion and gastro-intestinal problems on May 13 and was shifted to the ICU last Wednesday to improve his breathing pattern.

This is the third time in over three weeks that Ra-jnikanth has been admit-ted to a hospital. He was hospitalised first on 29 April after a bout of vom-iting, and was discharged the same evening.

On 5 May, he was again admitted to the ICU of the same hospital after he was diagnosed with al-lergic bronchitis and fe-ver. After a week, he was shifted to SRMC

Joining several other people offering prayers for the speedy recov-ery of the Superstar, the members of the Tamil Nadu Film Directors Asso-ciation on Sunday prayed for his well being and hoped that he would return home in a hale and hearty condition soon.

Association Secretary R K Selvamani, who spoke at the general body meet-ing of the association that was held at a theatre complex in the city, said, ‘Our dear brother Rajini has been ad-mitted to a hospital. Let us all jointly pray for his recovery now.’

Responding to the secretary’s appeal, around 1000 assistant directors and 500 directors, who had gathered for the General body meeting, stood up to offer prayers for the Superstar.

Hanshika Motwani, who is going great guns in Tamil cinema with back-to-back hits in Mappillai and Engeyum Kad-hal, said that she was praying for 10 min-utes every day for the speedy recovery of the Superstar Rajnikanth.

’I admire Rajnikanth a lot and I wish his speedy recovery,’ she says.

Meanwhile she called up personally ac-tor and Rajnikanth’s son-in-law Dhanush, when a National Award was announced for his performance in Aadukalam recently.

‘Dhanush was my first co-star in Tamil when we did Maapillai which was my debut flick. I was so happy for him. His only concern was for his father-in-law Ra-jinikanth sir and he said that his real cele-brations would happen only after the latter returned home from hospital’, she says.

Even as Dhanush, actor and son-in-law of Rajinikanth, released a picture of the Superstar in hospital and said that he is getting well, a host of Bollywood and Kollywood film personalities including Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Sarath Kumar and Lawrence Raghavendra prayed and wished a speedy recovery to Rajini. ‘I am very upset after hearing about Rajini’s health. We all should pray for his quick recovery. I spoke to him about six days back. He said ‘I am fine Paji’. I am worried about his health,’ said veteran Bollywod actor Dharmendra

Priyanka Chopra said, ‘I wish him a better health.’ Arshad Warsi said, ‘I think he is God to all actors and I hope he gets better. Industry needs him, the whole country needs him and we love him a lot.’

At Thirumullaivoyal Sri Raghavendra Swamy temple in Chennai, special prayers were organised and mass feeding was done in which Lawrence Raghavendra, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu and Bharath among others took part. Also, Rajini fans prayed at many temples all over Tamil Nadu and conducted special prayers.

Prayer time for Rajini

The tension for Rajni fans is finally over. The actor is reportedly getting better will be discharged with in a week from Sri Ramach-andra Medical Centre.

According to sources, the top actor has started taking normal diet and had Pongal and Idly as breakfast on Tuesday morning. He is rocking ever since he was shifted to a special ward from the ICU, it is said.

Meanwhile, family members of Rajini, espe-cially his wife Latha, have decided to release latest photographs and videos of the Superstar to make his fans happy. ‘Because Rajini’s fam-ily is moved at the affection showered on him by fans,’ sources say.

In the meantime, a special mass prayer is or-ganised on Thursday (May 26) at 10.30 am to 12 pm. Those who would like to pray for Raji-ni’s good health could do it from wherever they are at the above specified time.

Good news for Rajni fans

Here is the good news for Rajinikanth fans. The Su-perstar’s son-in-law Dhanush said on Tuesday that the actor is recovering well in Singapore and will be back in Chennai in 10 days.

‘He is responding well to treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre. He should be back in Chennai in a week or 10 days,’ said Dhanush.‘Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre gave him excellent medical facilities. They made him fit to travel so he could get better treatment. The doctors have iden-tified the root cause and it is not an irreversible condition,’ he further said.

Dhanush added: ‘The superstar is eating well, watching a lot of movies and in a great mood to shop. If he doesn’t return after 10 days, that will be because we would be on a family vacation.’

Dhanush also requested fans to not believe rumours. He said Rajnikanth has not undergone a kidney transplant. ‘Soon there will be a statement from the superstar himself,’ he in-formed.

Certainly Dhanush’s words will provide some solace to his fans, who were worried since 29 April, when Rajnikanth was first admitted to the hospital.

SAC elected TFPC chief The split is now wide open in Tamil Film Producers Council after the big win for AIADMK combine in the elections. Ram-anarayanan, a known DMK-sympathiser, quit as president of Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC).

Now he is replaced by producer and director S A Chandrasekhar. He was elected unanimous-ly at the emergency meeting of the producers council on Saturday evening.

At the emergency meeting Saturday morning, a few producers gathered to raise their voice against Ramanarayanan and his team. The producers alleged that Ramanarayanan and his team acted against the interest of small and medium budget producers.

SAC, father of actor Vijay, had campaigned for the AIADMK combine in the elections.

Though AISMK president and Nadigar Sangam chief Sarath Kumar has been elected as a MLA from Thenkasi and has become a busy politician, he is not going to quit acting.

‘I will balance both political and career,’ says the chief of South Indian Film Artistes Asso-ciation. ‘I have to do a lot for my constituency. But at the same time would continue to act,’ he says.

On his next venture, he says, ‘Kanchana is due for release this month and my role was par-ticularly very challenging. My films in Malay-alam are doing well. I am completing a film in Telugu too.’

On the election results, Sarath Kumar says, ‘I respect the verdict of the people. They have thrown away corrupt people outside.’ The film industry needs to be given priority as lot of thing needs to be set right. It should become a level-playing field, he adds.

Kamal Haasan knows the knack of choosing right films from other languages and to remake them in Tamil. His recent venture Unnaipol Oruvan, in-spired by A Wednesday is a pointer to it.

Now the actor is expected to do the remake of Ma-layalam hit Traffic. The Ulaga Nayagan had been for the 100th day celebrations of Traffic recently. And speaking on the occasion, he expressed her desire to remake the film.

The movie is a thriller film that features an ensem-ble cast consisting of Sreenivasan, Rahman, Kun-chako Boban, Asif Ali, Anoop Menon and Vineeth Sreenivasan among others

Kamal Hassan is planning to do the role enacted by Rahman. Buzz is that his already planned film Viswaroppam with Selvaraghavan might be delayed and Traffic remake will be done as a quickie.

Kamal Haasan is looked up as an inspiration by many in the industry. Budding actors look up to him for advice and take his words as gospel when it comes to cinema and acting. The lead stars of director Selva’s Naanga were no exception. Kamal Haasan met the young actors and had a word of advice for them recently. According to director Selva, ‘Naanga stars children of film artists and technicians and is a film that takes a trip down memory lane. It’s about how a group of friends meet up and reminisce about their younger days.

Kamal liked the concept of the film and wanted to meet the star cast. And this meeting was made pos-sible by actor-director Santhanabarathi, whose son makes his debut with this film’. The director adds: ‘Kamal knows the parents of all my lead stars and was surprised how much they knew about cinema.

I wanted Kamal to launch the audio of the film, but he said he would be abroad at that time. So, he took time to meet my team before the audio launch.’

If sources are to be believed, it would begin at Vancouver in Canada. The film has had a delayed start after visa was denied to the crew early last month. Now with all decks cleared, the team is planning to go all the way to Canada this June.

Viswaroopam has music by Shankar Mahadevan with Sonakshi Sinha of Dabbang fame playing the heroine. Kamal Haasan, it is said, was mightily impressed with Selva’s screenplay and is eager to go for shoot. Meanwhile, the actor is re-portedly planning to start the re-make of Malayalam hit The Traf-fic.

Taking part in a music award function in Chennai, actor Kamal Haasan showed the crowd gathered in large numbers that why he is called an versatile artiste.

Speaking at the function, Kamal Haasan said that he would be all thrilled to sung a song from one of his movies. Much to the applause of the audience, the Ulaga Nayagan crooned lines from Sundari neeyum... in Michael Madhana Kamarajan.

When he started the song Sundari Neey-um... the whole crowd went berserk and joined him in chorus. Referring to Gau-thami and his two daughters who had ac-companied him to the award ceremony, he said, ‘I have come here with three sundaris (pretty women). And so, shall sing this song about a sundari.’

Selvaraghavan is busy giving final touches to Irandam Ulagam at quick pace to kick start his next venture Viswa-roopam.

The movie has created enough buzz even before it could go to the floors for it stars Kamal Haasan and Dabbang girl Son-akshi Sinha in lead roles.

Assures Selvaraghavan camp that audience would see a dif-ferent Kamal Haasan in Viswa-roopam. He would be slim, trim and young all through, they say.

On her part Sonakshi, said, ‘I am eagerly waiting to start shooting for the movie. Hope-fully all goes well and it would be a great learning experience for me’.

The big news is here. Selvaraghavan has reportedly walked out of Viswaroopam and the film will now be direct-ed by Kamal Haasan himself. ‘The Ulaga Nayagan will wield the megaphone besides playing the lead role,’ say sources.

‘Since it is taking time for Sel-va to complete Irandam Ulag-am with Dhanush and Richcha Gangopadhyay, he has walked out of Viswaroopam and Kamal has now taken the mantle,’ say sources.

‘Kamal is planning a 35-day schedule in London, where some important scenes and songs on Kamal and heroine Sonakshi Sinha will be shot,’ sources add.

Trisha wants thrill

Ganja Karuppu to play solo hero

I am tired of playing commercial heroine. I want to ex-periment, says Trisha, who was last seen with Kamal Haasan in Manmadhan Ambu.

The former Miss Chennai girl is going great guns play-ing Venkatesh’s heroine in Telugu remake of Kaavalan, while she recently completed shooting with Ajith for Mankatha.Know for her open talk, Trisha says, ‘I want to do challenging roles. I am tired of doing a typical her-oine’s role, running around trees and romancing’.

Her role in Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya was admired by all. Queried why she is not part of the Hindi remake of the movie, she says, ‘I was initially approached to act. But the shooting got delayed. Hence I could not accommo-date fresh dates.’

Tamil cinema had seen many comedians playing solo hero roles. From Nagesh, Chandrababu till Vivek and Vadivelu, almost all comedians have tried their luck playing a hero.

Joining the list is Ganja Karuppu, who started his career playing a small role in director Bala’s Pithamagan. He slowly took to playing comedy roles and arrived with a bang playing a second hero in SImbhu Devan’s Arai En 305il Kadavul.

Now Ganja Karuppu graduates to play solo hero for a movie titled Mannaar Viriguda to be produced and di-rected by a newcomer. The film would go on floors very soon and gracing the launch of the film would be direc-tors Ameer and Hari.

Sonia Agrawal goes to KeralaActress Sonia Agrawal, who made her comeback in Tamil cinema with Vaanam, is going strong and steady. She is committed to do a Tamil movie besides a Malay-alam film.

Sources have it that the actress has signed on the dot-ted line to do her first Mollywood movie, a family enter-tainer opposite Mukesh to be directed by Mohan Kupleri.

Says Sonia, ‘I am keen on doing movies where my role has a say. For me quality matters the most than quantity’.

Though it was a brief role, she won the laurels of film-buffs for her performance in Vaanam, directed by Krish with STR, Bharath, Anushka, Prakashraj and Vega play-ing the lead roles.

Suseenthiran, Yuvan in KLDirectors Suseenthiran and music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja have flown to Malaysia to compose tunes for their forthcoming film.

They would complete scoring music for the movie and return soon to India, sources say. The film stars Vikram in the lad role. Interestingly it is first film for Yuvan Shankar with Vikram.

It is a delight to work with Vikram. Suseenthiran has a great knowledge for music and I enjoy working in this project, says the music composer.

Suseenthiran says, ‘it is a musical entertainer and would feature Vikram in dual roles’.

At a time when Tamil cinema is on a high, winning 14 national awards, several movies are being remade, inspired by successful flicks in other languages.

Vijay’s Velayudham is said to be a remake of Telugu hit Azad. The actor’s Pongal release Kaavalan was a rehash of Malayalam hit Bodyguard.

Dhanush’s recent re- lease Mappillai was a remake of yesteryear Ra- jnikanth film titled the same and Karthi’s Siruthai was inspired by Tollywood’s Vikramarkudu.

Not far behind is Sil- ambarasan. His Vaanam was a remake of Telugu hit Vedam. Also, he is play-ing the lead in Osthi, a remake of Hindi hit Dab-bang which won the national award for the best entertaining film.

Sources say Vikram’s Deiva Thirumagal is based on Hollywood film I am Sam. Director Shankar’s Nanban is the re- make of Hindi film 3 Idiots. Naan Aval Adhu, star- ring Madhavan, Sada and Shamitha Shetty in the lead, is the remake of the Hindi film Darling, released a couple of years ago.

Analysts say, ‘the ba- sic thing when you select a remake is to find out how much of Tamil nativity is there in the original? If it suits the taste of our audience and has the essence of the original, it will surely work’.

‘The remake industry will boom as getting content suitable for the audience is becoming increasingly difficult. Moreover remakes are considered as safe-bet since they are rehash of films which are already huge hits’.

Stating that there are no story writers in Tamil cinema as directors themselves write scripts for their films, they say, ‘in Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam, there are independent writers who understand the nuances of writing a commercially viable plot.’

Post Aadukalam, Tapsee’s stakes have gone high in Kollywood. She is now playing a plum role op-posite Jiiva in Vandhan Vendran, directed by Kannan of Jayamkondan and Kanden Kadhalai fame.

In the film, Tapsee is playing a tough girl who wants to kill a person. ‘When director Kannan told me that I’d have to chase a person with a fully loaded gun, I was very nervous. Following this, we got a professional shooter on the sets and he taught me how to hold a gun and aim at a target,’ she says.

Elaborating more on the difficulties she faced, the Punjabi girl adds: ‘With so many instructions running through my head, I was struggling to remember my dialogues. I couldn’t wait to finish those portions.’

‘In the first half, I would appear as a chirpy girl. How-ever in the second half, my character turns serious and adamant. I want to get a person killed and when no one is willing to help me, I decide to bring matters into my own hands,’ she says.

Nakka Mukka star Nakul, who started his career with director Shankar’s Boys, followed it up with some romantic entertainers, including Kad-halil Vizhundhen, Kandhakottai and Masilamani.

With his last few movies not doing well, he chose to take a break and now he is back with Eeram fame director Arivazhagan’s film.

Asked why such a big gap, the actor says, ‘Since I’m just four films old in Kollywood, I decided I didn’t want to do just any film, but wait for some-thing exciting and challenging. So when a chal-lenging offer came from Arivazhagan, I grabbed it.’‘Waiting is not new to me,’ the younger brother of Devayani says and adds: ‘I have waited before and this time it was just a tad longer. But I have been using the time to listen to scripts and my efforts have been rewarded’.

Speaking about the film, in which he plays a bas-ketball star, Nakul, says, ‘the film pivots around the life of a sportsman and the challenges he face. Also, I don’t think there have been films on basket-ball in Tamil. It’s a role I have never played before and naturally I’m thrilled.’

At the shooting spot of Velayudham, Vijay threw a surprise birthday party to director Jayam M Raja on Monday. A cake cutting ceremony during the break was the highlight of the occasion.

A chocolate cake was cut in the presence of unit and Raja’s family members. It was a pleasant surprise for the director since Vijay did not inform anyone about his plan, sources say.

Vijay and Raja have struck a friendship during the shootiung of Velayudhjam and they now share an ex-cellent rapport.

After directing brother Jayaram Ravi for five films, Raja is directing a big hero like Vijay for the first time. Velayudham is produced by Aascar V Ravichandran and it features Genelia and Hanshika opposite Vijay.

Raja had said several times that he was a big fan of Vi-jay and the actor too had appreciated Raja’s directorial skills after watching all his films in the past.

Both Asin and Trisha may be competitors in the film industry but they share one thing in com-mon. The beauties say in one voice that the industry is dominated by men.

Asin, who is awaiting the release of Ready in Hindi opposite Salman Khan, says, ‘It was a great experi-ence to be part of Sallu’s movie. But I say that it is out-and-out Salman Khan’s show and I am just part of it.’

Knowing well that Salman Khan would hog all lime-light, I agreed to do the film, she says.

Meanwhile, Trisha has stated that her character in Mankatha, Ajith’s 50th film, would not be as impor-tant as the ones she played in Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya and Kamal Haasan’s Manmadhan Ambu.

But she has no regrets about it. ‘Venkat Prabhu clear-ly told me in the beginning itself that Mankatha is go-ing to be a boys’ flick. So there is no disappointment for me.’

After Naan Kadavul, Arya pairs up with director Bala for Avan Ivan. Known for his dark themes, Avan Ivan is the director’s first ven-ture in comedy.

‘Vishal (Avan) and I (Ivan) play brothers, who are petty thieves in the film. While his character is more inclined towards stage shows, as he wants to become an artiste, my job is to always pull his leg and let him down,’ explains Arya.

The funniest part in the film, he says, is his name - Kumbudren Samy. ‘Even in Boss Engira Baskaran, there were comedy scenes that I shared with Santhanam. But in Avan Ivan, it’s different,’ he says.

Avan Ivan is likely to release by end of May or latest by the first week of June.

Arya does not stop gushing about his role in Avan Ivan, national award winning director Bala’s first comedy film.

’In Avan Ivan, Bala has ensured that you get a full dose of comedy. His detailing for characters, sketching in characterisation with regard to body language, style and dialogue delivery is amazing. When you work in a Bala film, you grow as an actor,’ he says.

After Naan Kadavul, Arya pairs up with director Bala for the second time. Three years in the making, Nan Kadavul earned Bala a national award for best direction. Equal credit should go to Vishal, who has per-formed exceedingly well, Arya adds. The actor, who is currently shoot-ing for Vettai with Madhavan, says, ‘Maddy is simple, a great actor to work with and is very understanding.’

Producer Mogan Nadarajan has lodged a com-plaint with the Tamil Film Producers Council against Ileana, alleging that the actress did not pay back the ‘advance amount’ she had received from him.

In his complaint, the producer said that he paid Rs 36 lakh as advance to Ileana for acting opposite Vikram in a Tamil film (which later became Dheivathirumagal). ‘However, she was not part of the movie,’ he said.

‘So, we asked her to repay the money she had received from us. But there was no proper response from her side. The Tamil Film Producers Council should in-tervene and ensure that the actress gave us back the money,’ he said.

Ileana is currently acting with Vijay in Shankar-direct-ed Nanban (a remake of Three Idiots), while Mogan Nadarajan is gearing up to release Dheivathirumagal, which has Anushka and Amala Paul as leading ladies.Ileana is now in Amsterdam shooting a song sequence for Nanban.

Saranya Mohan may have played a cameo in Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai. But she is happy with the role.

Says the actress, ‘ there are several reasons why I agreed to do this role. The first is that I have immense faith in director Suseenthiran. Also, the entire crew is a very nice one. The other important reason is that I know Appukutty well. Had it been his first film with me, I might have hesitated to do this role. But since I have worked with him in VKK, I had no hesitation in doing this role opposite him.’

Says the actress, ‘With Suseenthiran, everything is up-front. He doesn’t lie or mince words. Even when ap-proaching me for this role, he said, ‘I’m doing a film. There’s a beautiful character but it is only a very short role. Also, Appukutty is the hero.’ I was a little sur-prised but really happy for Appukutty’.

On her role in the film, which is about a man earning his livelihood through a pony, Saranya says, ‘I play the role of Rani, a lively character that appears only in the second half of the film.’

Thevar outfits alleged that naming the movie as Deiva Thirumagan would be demeaning their leader Muthuramlinga Thevar. In the movie, Vikram plays a youth with the heart and brain of a five-year-old boy. They even laid siege to Vikram’s house in Chennai.

Finally the decision to rename the movie was taken not to harm anyone’s sentiments, said director Vijay. He said henceforth Deiva Thirumagan would be called as Vikramanin Deiva Thirumagal.

Italy has become a preferred destination for Tamil film stars. Politician-actor Vijayakanth after a hectic political campaigning for 13 April elections, has chosen to go on a vacation to Italy to spend quality time with his family.

He is expected to return only on 12 May, just a day before the election re-sults are announced.

Meanwhile, Chiyaan Vikram who has completed shooting for Deiva Thirum-agal too has packed his bags for Italy.Vikram will be back in Chennai by the third week of this month.

After the release of Deiva Thirumagal, he would start shooting with Suseenthiran. Italy has many exotic locations and histori-cal places to visit and enjoy. It is preferred destination for shooting many Bollywood movies.
