a big chapter Welcome anD a fonD fareWellbig changes are afoot as we prepare to welcome our new Director andy eagle, who takes up his post in June. andy has twenty years of experience working in professional and community arts in Wales for both not-for-profit and commercial organisations.in 1992 he started as head of marketing for swansea grand theatre followed by a period with the newly formed neath port talbot cbc unitary authority as head of cultural services. it was in this post that he opened pontardawe arts centre, established a community arts development project for the valleys communities of the authority, and brought catatonia to margam park for a 25,000 sell out concert.

David mackintosh: the curtainUntil Sunday 19 June • Tan Sul 19 Mehefin

”I like the idea of things concealed or hidden by a curtain or cover, and that the drawings in the show might reveal things.”

if an artwork embodies thought, mackintosh presents thinking in visible form on a scale few of his contemporaries can equal. launched into the sight, minds and physical territory of the spectator is the fundamental, intuitive value of making a mark. sheets of paper advance diverse and sometimes indistinct images, repeatedly leaping out with a surprise that can bring a smile or an unexpectedly different reaction. lines tangle and shade; they shape, overlay and obscure; they are enlivened by the potential for movement if not made to move already by the artist through animation.the accident of a ‘drawn’ curtain in a drawing presents delicious linguistic possibilities. but, what penetrates the viewer’s sensibility most strongly about the curtain is the notion of suspension (another play on words?). What lies behind? What is being concealed? is this curtain the barrier that closes off or is it the background on which to project?the animation unexpectedly rationalises the experience of mackintosh’s exhibitions with its constantly shifting images in one concentrated place. the artist propels on to his viewer’s consciousness arbitrary chance encounters and the sensation of being buffeted by the unrelated-ness of numerous images. yet this discontinuity occurs alongside a musical accompaniment that can sound, by comparison, notably together, even in its sometimes-chaotic disharmony.

This text is an edited extract from ‘Curtain Call’ by Martin Holman. The full version of is available from the Gallery or can be downloaded from www.chapter.org.

Q&AName: Louise

Job title: Bar supervisor

How long have you worked at Chapter? Forever! Since 13th April 2002.

Are the bar staff scared of you? Err no I don't think so — they think I'm a bit sad with all my lists! I've got really good teams, its effortless with good staff.

What’s your fave tipple? Erdinger dunkel or a good bitter, tasty!

Do you like pork scratchings? Secretly yes, but when I think about what they actually are, no.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Chapter? When I get to switch off and be a customer, watch a film or get a drink with my friends, without being harassed about rotas!

What do you get up to outside of Chapter? Websites, design for print, making cards, taking photos, working at Happy Days Home Store in Cowbridge, a sneaky cocktail or two.

Where did your business name AmberCouch come from? I liked the idea of having a colour as our name, we thought of Orange but that was already taken! Many wines later, my partner Rich said ‘I had an Amber Couch at uni’...

Tell us about your gift cards. I make and design cards, lino prints, textiles, art cards, flocked cards, laser cut snowflakes at Christmas! I set up mylittlecardcompany.co.uk last year and it’s going quite well.

Do you have any hidden talents? I have quite a good punch for a little person. I'm also very good at sleeping, does that count?

If money was no object what would you buy? An island to retreat to when life gets too hectic. And a mini convertible and a personal shopper!

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? Sophie Ellis Bextor or a young Patricia Arquette.

Tell us a secret… Our Bar Manager Dave Morgan has 5 Chihuahuas. aaaah!

Tell us a joke… Two drunks are walking home along the railway tracks. The first drunk says, “There are a hell of a lot of steps here.” The second drunk says, “I’ll tell you what's worse, this hand rail is too low down“

re-live stories to leaveSat 18 June • 7.30pm • Sad 18 Mehefinfollowing the success of last year’s A Story To Call My Own, Re-Live return for one night only with their latest offering, the culmination of a three month collaboration with the marie curie hospice in penarth.over the past four years Re-Live have been working creatively with older people and exploring the depth of the reflection process that, for many people, comes with getting older.

“our work has shown us that older people look forward as well as back, and that the one inevitable truth facing us all is that someday our life will end.”this project explores how an awareness of the nearness of death affects the way we live in the here and now and the way we think about the past. Do we “rage against the dying of the light” or do we accept that all life must pass and that the future is unknown? What do we do with the days, hours or minutes we have left? how would we like to be remembered, and what are the memories that we most treasure, the stories we want to leave behind?Re-live are developing an international reputation for theatre that is truthful and vital.£8/£6

Submarine Living In Emergency

a screaming manFri 27 May — Thu 2 June • Gwe 27 Mai — Iau 2 Mehfrance/2010/92mins/subtitled/pg. Dir: mahamat-saleh haroun. With youssouf Djaoro, Dioucounda Koma.

When new owners take over the luxury n’Djamena hotel resort in chad, ageing former swimming champion adam is forced to give up his job to his son abdel. With his country in the throes of a civil war and the government demanding money or volunteers old enough to fight the rebels, humiliated and now penniless, he is forced to contribute to the ‘war effort’, and commit a terrible act of betrayal. burning with a slow intensity, this is a quietly powerful parable about life in contemporary africa which won the jury prize at cannes.+ Brief introduction on Wed 1 June by gill branston, researcher and writer on cinema, and secretary of the charity safe birth in chad.www.saferbirthinchad.org

submarineFri 27 May — Thu 2 June • Gwe 27 Mai — Iau 2 MehUK/2010/94mins/15. Dir: richard ayoade. With craig roberts, sally hawkins, noah taylor, paddy considine.

oliver tate has two main objectives: to lose his virginity to the girl of his dreams before his 16th birthday and to stop his mother from leaving his father for their new-age next door neighbour. all of this while trying desperately to grow up in swansea, as the love of his life introduces him to low level pyromania and dictates to him what he should be writing about her in his diary. richard ayoade’s (nathan Barley, IT Crowd) delightful directorial debut is based on Joe Dunthorne’s critically-lauded novel, detailing the trials, tribulations and range of inappropriate affectations of this deliciously awkward young man.

Living In Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without BordersWed 1 + Thu 2 June • Mer 1 + Iau 2 MehefinUSA/2011/93mins/15. Dir: Mark Hopkins. With Chris Brasher, Davinder Gill, Tom Kreuger.

For the first time ever, Médecins Sans Frontières gave a documentary crew uncensored access to its field operations. Set in war-torn Congo and post-conflict Liberia, this documentary interweaves the stories of four doctors as they struggle to provide emergency medical care under extreme conditions. Two volunteers are new recruits: a 26-year-old Australian doctor stranded in a remote bush clinic and an American surgeon from Tennessee trying to cope under the load of emergency cases in a shattered capital city. Two others are experienced field hands: a dynamic head of mission, valiantly trying to keep morale high and tensions under control, and an exhausted veteran, who has seen too much horror and wants out.

My Dog TulipFri 27 May — Thu 2 June • Gwe 27 Mai — Iau 2 MehUSA /2009/83mins/ctba. Dir: Paul Fierlinger, Sandra Ferlinger. With: Christopher Plummer, Lynne Redgrave, Isabella Rossellini.

This beautifully animated film is a bittersweet account of author J. R. Ackerley’s 16-year relationship with his German shepherd dog. The distinguished man of letters hardly thought of himself as a dog lover until he came to adopt Tulip, who turned out to be the love of his life. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, the film reveals Tulip’s sassy, erratic behaviour and Ackerley’s fumbling but determined efforts to ensure an existence of happiness for her. This is a profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heart of all relationships.

apocalypse nowFri 3 — Sun 5 June • Gwe 3 — Sul 5 MehefinUsa/1979/148mins/15. Dir: francis ford coppola. With marlon brando, martin sheen, robert Duvall, Dennis hopper.

in coppola’s hallucinatory masterpiece, martin sheen stars as captain Willard, a troubled man sent on a dangerous top-secret mission into cambodia to assassinate a rogue green beret, col. Kurtz (brando), who has barricaded himself in a remote outpost. as Willard ventures deeper into the wilderness of the jungle, he embarks on a strange journey that leads him to Kurtz — but also forces him to come face to face with the terrifying vision of the heart of darkness. a critically acclaimed cast (including robert Duvall, Dennis hopper, harrison ford and laurence fishburne), stunning cinematography from Vittorio storaro and masterful sound editing from Walter murch all contribute to this iconic film which has captivated audiences for decades. let your senses be assaulted again by this beautifully restored print.

heartbeatsFri 3 — Thu 9 June • Gwe 3 — Iau 9 Mehefincanada/2010/102mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Xavier Dolan. With Xavier Dolan, monia chokri, niels schneider.

francis and marie are close friends. one day, during lunch, they meet nicolas, a young man from the country newly arrived in town. as one rendezvous leads troublingly to another, each of the two friends slides deeper into obsessive fantasies around the same object of desire. and the deeper they slide, the more their once cast-iron friendship begins to crack under the pressure. 21-year-old Xavier Dolan’s second film follows each stage of the typical love story’s progress — starting with a meeting and ending in tears — and careers through a whole gamut of poetic craziness along the way.Official Selection, Un Certain Regard, Cannes Film Festival 2010.

oranges and sunshineFri 3 — Thu 9 June • Gwe 3 — Iau 9 Mehefin UK/australia/2010/105mins/15. Dir: Jim loach. With emily Watson, hugo Weaving, David Wenham.

returning following a popular run in april, Jim loach’s debut feature tells the true story of margaret humphreys, a social worker from nottingham in the late 80s who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals in recent times: the forced migration of over 130,000 children in care from the UK to australia and other commonwealth countries. almost singlehandedly, and with little regard for her own well-being, margaret reunited thousands of children with the parents they had been told were dead, and brought authorities to account through worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. being promised oranges and sunshine in their new life, many children as young as four years old were subjected to appalling abuse, hard labour and life in institutions.

Vidal Sassoon the MovieFri 3 — Thu 9 June • Gwe 3 — Iau 9 MehefinUK/2010/94mins/PG. Dir: Craig Teper. With Vidal Sassoon, Mary Quant, Ronnie Sassoon.

Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser — he’s a rock star, an artist, a craftsman who ‘changed the world with a pair of scissors’. With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hair styles he pioneered in the 1960s and his ‘wash and wear’ philosophy, Sassoon revolutionised the art of hairstyling, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture. Spanning 80 years of revolution in culture, this documentary takes a deeply intimate look into the life of a man whose influence far outreached the industry he changed forever. It’s a true rags-to-riches tale, tracing with visual gusto the life of a self-made man whose passion and perseverance took him from a London orphanage to international success and celebrity as one of the great innovators of our time.

Ffilm gyntaf y cyfarwyddwr Sidney Lumet (1924 — 2011) oedd Twelve Angry Men (1957), astudiaeth o reithgor ac ymdrechion un aelod i gael ei gyd-aelodau i feddwl yn ddwys yn lle rhuthro i wneud penderfyniad. Drama gan Tennessee Williams oedd ffynhonnell The Fugitive Kind(1960). Mae’n darlunio’r berthynas rhwng crwydryn, gwraig hŷn sydd wedi ei suro gan galedi ei bywyd, a nymffo alcoholaidd. Y dramodydd Eugene O’Neill luniodd y sgript ar gyfer ffilm Lumet o’i ddrama hunangofiannol Long Day’s Journey into Night (1962). Mae dynion y teulu, gan gynnwys y mab ifanc sydd wedi gosod ei fryd ar fod yn llenor, yn or-ddibynnol ar alcohol a’r fam yn gwallgofi. Ffilm ryfel-oer yw Fail-Safe (1964). Ynddi mae cyfrifiaduron bron ag achosi’r Trydydd Rhyfel Byd trwy anfon negeseuon camarweiniol i beilotiaid awyrennau bomio. Gŵr busnes Iddewig yw The Pawnbroker (1965). Mae pob agwedd o’i fywyd yn Efrog Newydd yn cael ei liwio gan ei brofiadau yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd pan laddwyd ei wraig a’u dau blentyn yn un o wersylloedd y Natsiaid. Mae dylanwad gormesol digwyddiadau’r gorffennol ar y presennol i’w weld hefyd yn Daniel (1983) a Running on Empty (1988). Bryn artiffisial yw’r un yn The Hill (1965). Mewn carchar milwrol yn Libya yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd mae’r prif swyddog sadistaidd yn gorfodi’r carcharorion i ddringo’r bryn dro ar ol tro mewn gwres llethol.

Yn The Anderson Tapes (1971) mae Anderson, ar ôl cyfnod o garchar am ladrata, am gael gwell hwyl arni y tro hwn ac mae’n casglu gang pwrpasol at ei gilydd. Mae llawer o sôn yn y ffilm am gamerâu cylch-cyfyng ac offer clustfeinio. Mae Serpico (1973) yn bortread o’r plismon Frank Serpico. Cafodd ei erlid am ddatgelu llygredd ei gyd-blismyn. Mae rhagor o sôn am lygredd plismyn yn Prince of the City (1981) a Q&A (1990). Yn Dog Day Afternoon (1975) mae lleidr aneffeithiol yn ceisio dwyn o fanc. Mae ganddo gariad sydd eisiau llawdriniaeth i droi’n fenyw a bydd lladrad llwyddiannus yn talu am y llawdriniaeth. Uchafbwynt olaf Lumet yn y 1970au oedd Network (1976). Yn y ffilm ddychanol hon mae rhwydwaith teledu yn symud y newyddion i’r adran adloniant ac yn trefnu fod cyflwynydd trafferthus yn cael ei saethu’n farw ar raglen fyw.

Yn The Verdict (1982) mae bargyfreithiwr alcoholaidd yn ceisio ennill achos llys ac adfer ei enw da. Ffilm ddirgelwch yw The Morning After (1986). Mae actores alcoholaidd yn ofni ei bod wedi llofruddio’r dyn sy’n gorwedd yn ei gwely ‘y bore wedyn’ ond mae cyn-blismon yn credu ei bod hi’n ddieuog.

Ffilm olaf Lumet oedd Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), golwg ar frodyr sy’n twyllo’i gilydd ond sy’n uno i ladrata eiddo eu rhieni, gyda chanlyniadau trychinebus. Dyma goron ar yrfa hir ac eithriadol o gynhyrchiol.

the fugitive Kind Sun 26 + Tue 28 June Sul 26 + Maw 28 MehefinUsa/1960/121mins/15. Dir: sidney lumet. With marlon brando, Joanne Woodward, anna magnani.

this 1960 film began life as ‘battle of angels’, a never-produced 1939 play by a young tennessee Williams. nearly 20 years later, Williams refined this rough-hewn theatrical effort into ‘orpheus Descending’, which enjoyed a respectable broadway run. the renamed film version stars marlon brando as Valentine

‘snakeskin’ Xavier, a trouble-prone drifter who wanders into a deliciously Williamsesque mississippi town. here he becomes involved in the problems of alcoholic carole cutrere and unhappily married lady torrence and also runs afoul of torrence’s vicious husband. sexual symbolism abounds in this tempestuous drama, which features brando at his most inscrutable and magnani at her earthiest. maureen stapleton, in real life one of brando’s best friends and severest critics, plays an avant-garde artist.

life, above all Fri 10 — Thu 16 June • Gwe 10 — Iau 16 Mehefinsouth africa/2010/106mins/subtitled/12a. Dir: oliver schmitz. With Khomotso manyaka, Keaobaka makanyane.

Just after the death of her newly-born sister, 12-year-old chanda learns of a rumour that spreads like wildfire through her small, dust-ridden village near Johannesburg. it destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. sensing that the gossip stems from prejudice and superstition, chanda leaves home and school in search of her mother and the truth. Directed by south african filmmaker oliver schmitz (Paris, je t-aime), and based on the award-winning novel ‘chanda’s secrets’ by allan stratton, this emotional drama features a stunning performance by first-time actress Khomotso manyaka (see below).

patagoniaFri 10 — Thu 16 June • Gwe 10 — Iau 16 MehefinWales/2010/118mins/subtitled/15. Dir: marc evans. With matthew rhys, nia roberts, Duffy.

one of the most well received films to grace our screens in recent times, marc evans’ latest is a beautiful meditation on culture, roots and identity, which interweaves two journeys. in the first, insecure, uptight rhys drags his girlfriend off to patagonia so he can photograph disused chapels in exotic locations, where she soon falls into the arms of their gorgeous gaucho guide (matthew rhys) — and who could blame her? meanwhile patagonian granny cerys fools her grandson alejandro into accompanying her to Wales to find the farmhouse her mum was forced to leave when pregnant. these meandering journeys are enlivened by evans’ fine eye for landscape, and his intelligent reflections on contemporary Wales and its place in the world.

situated somewhere between fiction and documentary, this is a beautiful and poetic vision of the revolving cycles of life and nature in a timeless place. We follow an old shepherd who is living his last days in a quiet medieval village perched high on the hills of calabria. he is sick and believes that the dust he collects from the church floor will help to cure his illness. a young goat takes its first tentative steps in life; and nearby, a majestic tree stirs in the mountain breeze and slowly changes through the seasons.a native of the area, frammartino has made a profound and powerful film which follows the ancient rituals of the village, placing man within nature rather than at the centre of the universe.+ Artist Film (see p25)

the extraordinary adventures of adele blanc-secFri 10 — Thu 16 June • Gwe 10 — Iau 16 Mehefinfrance/2010/107mins/12a. Dir: luc besson. With louise bourgoin, mathieu amalric, gille lellouche.

this visually stunning, refreshingly imaginative, crazily illogical and lightly enjoyable caper from visionary director luc besson is set in early 20th century paris. the story follows novelist and amateur archaeologist adele blanc-sec on a quest to awaken her sister from a coma, with the help of a long-dead ancient egyptian doctor. the film, based on a french comic strip, is full of sight gags, well-choreographed action sequences, sumptuous costumes and zany caricatures. legendary cartoonist Jacques tardi’s original stories perfectly re-create the intrigue, romance and excitement of this tumultuous period in french history.

mammuth Fri 17 — Thu 23 June • Gwe 17 — Iau 23 Mehefinfrance/2010/92mins/subtitled/pg. Dir: benoit Delepine, gustave Kervern. With gerard Depardieu, yolande moreau, isabelle adjani.

one of france’s biggest box office successes of 2010 and nominated for the golden bear at the berlin film festival, this is an outrageously funny and subversive tale of one man’s attempt to secure his state pension while facing the prospect of retirement and the inevitability of growing old. During a road trip on his antique motorbike to collect the necessary paperwork from his former employers, gerard Depardieu’s character gets involved in surreal adventures which demonstrate the absurdity of the modern world. Directed by emerging young french directors gustave de Kervern and benoît Delépine (Louise-Michel, see below), Mammuth received three nominations at the 2011 césar awards (france’s equivalent to the oscars), including best actor for an extraordinary leading performance from Depardieu. + Artist Film (see p25)

the second film this month from absurdist french filmmakers benoit Delepine and gustave Kervern (see above) is a wonderfully unpredictable, left-of-centre comedy. the recently-fired female employees of a children’s clothing factory pool their funds together to put out a ‘hit’ on their callous boss. ex-con louise and her jobless sisters enlist security specialist michel to carry out the dirty deed, but his ineptitude is so great that he attempts to sub-contract the job to a series of inexperienced — and highly inappropriate — assassins. notorious belgian actor benoît poelvoorde (Man Bites Dog) offers a memorable cameo as a nut-job 9/11 conspiracy theorist and actor/director mathieu Kassovitz turns up as an organic hotelier in this cult classic in the making.

from the producers of Shaun of The Dead and Paul comes this fast, funny, frightening action adventure that pits the inner city against outer space. sam is walking home to her flat in a south london tower block when she’s robbed by a gang of masked youths. but they are distracted when a bright meteorite hits a nearby parked car and a small alien creature leaps from the wreckage. the gang chase the creature and kill it, which leads to the arrival of a group of larger, more savage monsters, hunting their fallen comrade. the estate is about to become a battleground; and the bunch of no-hope kids who just attacked sam are about to become her, and the block’s, only hope.

this compelling documentary offers a portrait of formula one driver ayrton senna, who won the world championship three times before his death at the age of only 34. Director asif Kapadia and screenplay writer manish pandey integrate hours of archive footage into a narrative that never loses momentum. Voiceovers from friends and family accompany grainy 1980s interviews and archive film of press stunts and his family at home in sao paulo, as senna matures from determined newcomer to world champion, and ultimately to sceptical, but resolute young veteran. the questionable circumstances of his death — in a car that was not safe enough to be on the road — add a universal theme, about how power and money lead to corruption, and can destroy when left unchecked.

eat • bWytaWe’re crossing our fingers for a glorious old-fashioned summer — what a difference the sunshine makes to how you feel and what you eat. Keep a look out for some lovely seasonal specials like summer lasagne with broad beans, asparagus, peas and courgettes — something a bit lighter than the traditional lasagne. and we’ll be serving up the classic strawberries and cream over Wimbledon week. after the phenomenal success of the barbecue during our birthday weekend, we’re planning some more al fresco cooking during our cider palooza in July — more in next month’s mag. We’re planning a sunday lunch hiatus in June, to introduce a summer brunch menu. but don’t worry, the good old roast will return in the autumn. We’ll also be keeping the breakfast menu on til 3pm with some lovely pastas and salads, like oregano and lemon marinated chicken; chorizo with slow roasted peppers; and a vegan alternative with pan fried tofu.Lex, Café Manager
