Young Indians (Yi) is an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), India’s premier business association, formed in the year 2002, with an objective of creating a platform for young Indians to realise the dream of a developed nation. Yi has around 1000 direct members in 24 city chapters: 160 members in 3 corporate chapters and engages around 12,000 members through its district chapter, Farmer Nets and Student Nets. The Yi membership includes young progres-sive Indians between the age group of 25 & 40 years and comprises of entrepreneurs, professionals and progressive achievers from different walks of life. “To become the voice of young Indians globally” being the vision of Yi, it provides a platform for young Indians to participate in and contribute by becoming an integral part of the Indian growth story.

Yi works effectively for promoting leadership skills for the development of its members through the learning programs and missions, the engagement of students in leadership and nation building activities through its 88 Student Net platforms which engage around 5500 students from various educational institutions across India; and two Farmers Net platform that has enrolled more than 8500 young & progressive farmers from all across the country, providing them with real time agricultural inputs and know-how.

Yi has successfully conducted campaigns and developed successful projects across the focus areas of primary education, environment, primary healthcare and employability, contributing positively to its surrounding eco system and the nation. Through its initiatives like Akshara, Yi has impacted more than 15000 students across 57 centers and has successfully managed campaigns like the ‘Blackboard Project’, providing blackboards to schools across different cities, reaching out to 1016 schools nationally and impacting approximately 2,53,000 children. Yi has been instrumental in skilling & placing 1300 youth under the aegis of its Yi LABS Employability program. Under the Healthcare initiative,

over 175000 children have been dewormed in addition to many health awareness programs across the community in different cities. Within the sphere of Environment, Yi conducts a Green I contest, campaigns for tree plantation, solid waste management projects, involving citizens and school children in the process. Yi is also in the process of planting one million saplings across the country through its ‘One Million Tree Project’. Yi also celebrates the National Day of importance like world Health Day , World Environment Day , Heritage Week, National Youth Day etc.

Yi organises an annual national summit with themes relevant to India and its youth. The national summits include sessions and interactions with some of the fi nest and eminent personalities from various fi elds, across India and the world. Seven Editions of the Yi National Summit have been organised to date.

Yi works in partnership with various organisations. These include the Government, Companies and Civil Society Organizations. On the international arena, Yi engages with the BMW Foundation to promote the “Indo German Young Leaders Forum” for young thought leaders. Yi has carried international missions to UK, China, Singapore, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Israel & Turkey. Yi is the founding member of the G20 Young Entrepreneur Alliance and is the offi cial representative from India for the G20 Young Entrepreneur Summit. Yi also works with the Aspen India Institute to conduct leadership development programs and has also worked with the Planning Commission of India in conducting consultation workshops across its chapters for accumulating a youth perspective to be included in the 12th Five Year Plan.

Jennifer Lewis (Dr) has a Phd in Civil Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK. Her thesis was on Strengthening Repairs of Structures using Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer Sheet (The Effects of Workmanship and Confi guration of Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer Sheet Strengthening on the Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Beams). Her research work included lab tests on over 40 half-scale RC beams & over 60 bond specimens.

It is the winner of the 2010 Brand Innovator Award for excellence in building 76 successful brands of specialty and was selected among 7 agri business companies to showcase innovations to the US President Mr Barack Obama at the Indo-US Agri Expo in Mumbai in November 2010.

He is the Past National Chairman of CII’s Young Indians, has held several key positions within the organization and presently the Chairman of the Next Practices Platform and International Relations and Partnerships.

He is also the recipient of the Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi Yuva Shakti Award 2010 in recognition of outstanding achievements towards Youth Empowerment and Inclusive Growth. He teaches at several Business Schools in India and abroad.

Rasika Wakalkar holds a BA (French) and has done her Masters in Marketing Management from the Pune University, besides an Advanced Diploma in French Literature.

With a work experience of about 11 years in different areas and capacities, Rasika is currently the Managing Director at Renee Enterprises Pvt Ltd and founded Pune’s fi rst and largest multi-designer store, Rudraksh that has put Pune on the country’s fashion map and has been the launch pad for over 130 indian designers.

She is also a Trustee at The Vishweshwar Education Society that runs under graduation & post graduation courses of the Mumbai University. In her previous role as a Trustee with the Pune based Indira Group of Institutes, she was responsible for founding 3 schools.

In her free time, Rasika loves to read, travel and cook.

She was recently awarded the “Star Youth Achiever Award in Fashion” at the 3rd Global Youth Marketing Awards in Mumbai. She has been listed in “The Power Club Women in Pune” by the Femina magazine and was also felicitated by the Royal Western India Turf Club for her contribution to fashion.

With Young Indians (Yi), Rasika was heading the Education vertical for 3 years before she became the Chapter Chair last year. Now in the role of immediate past chair, she engages actively with CII at Pune, besides being a Yi member.

The love for travel that she has, Rasika has been to the US, UK; France, Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal and a few other countries in Europe & Honkong, Singapore, Thailand etc in Asia.

Rishabh Agarwal holds a Bachelors degree in Economics and Business Management from Brigham Young University, Utah, USA. He has since attended various Management Development courses at IIM, Ahmedabad to keep himself updated.

He is presently the Owner / Manager at Karan Woosin Limited (KWL) and takes care of production and quality control. He is also responsible for the company’s marketing efforts within India and Europe.

Karan Woosin Limited is engaged in the production of socks of the highest quality with expertise in European quality and production methods. Traditionally a 100% Export Oriented Unit (EOU), with markets in most European countries, KWL now also sells its products in India to major brands across various retail formats. The company is currently in the process of establishing its own brand within India and plans are afoot to sell on the internet as well.

Rishabh is an automobile enthusiast and writes opinions and reviews on automobiles which are published regularly. Apart, from this he enjoys playing Badminton & Squash.

Shaurya Veer Himatsingka currently serving as the Deputy Managing Director for India Carbon Limited enjoys a strong entrepreneurial, fi nance and management base. He has obtained his Master’s in Business Administration from The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2005 and was one of the youngest members in his graduating class. D Thulasiraj holds a masters degree in business administration specializing in marketing and human resources from the GRD Institute of Management, Coimbatore, India. He has a Bachelors in Business Management and has done his schooling from one of the premium schools in Tamil Nadu, South India.

He started his career with the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2002 at its zonal offi ce at Coimbatore and since then, has played an important role in enhancing the membership number from 132 corporates to more than 300 as on date; thus making Coimbatore the second largest zonal offi ce in the country and the seventh overall in the country.

Moving away from CII, he was responsible for the functioning of the Young Indians (Coimbatore Chapter), that has over the years, been termed as a “model” chapter for the rest of the country. The membership of Young Indians started with 14 members in 2007 and has around 200 members as on date with people from various walks of life. Thulasiraj spearheaded many initiatives during his association with Yi at Coimbatore and organized the fi rst Young Indians Southern Regional Summit in 2006 on the theme “India on the Rise…”, the largest retreat of Yi in the country in 2007 and numerous learning sessions and missions to organizations of global excellence in various cities in India and to Malaysia and Singapore.
