Dear Yi Colleagues,
CIIs theme for the year 2009-10 laid emphasis on
Economy, Infrastructure & Governance. I am happy to
note that Young Indians have taken forward CIIs theme
this year by undertaking a number of programmes &
initiatives in these areas. These include a number of
interactive sessions with distinguished luminaries on
the economic downturn, opportunities and strategies
for revival; awareness campaigns to promulgate good
governance & participative citizenship.
The National Youth Policy, 2003 outlines the commitment
of the entire nation to the composite and all-round
development of the young sons and daughters of India
and seeks to establish an all-India perspective to fulll
their legitimate aspirations so that they are all strong
of heart and strong of body and mind in successfully
accomplishing the challenging tasks of nation building
and social transformation that lie ahead. For India to stay
in the mainstream of overall development, it is imperative
to ensure the effective pursuit of youth development
programmes which promote personality development
and enhance commitment to community service, social
justice, self reliance and national integration. Yi embodies
all these elements and much more.
Yi, being an inclusive organisation that focuses on building
itself as the voice of young Indians globally, has evolved
a position of being a key player in the developmental
imperatives for India through innovation & discussion. Yi
has engaged its members in generating awareness on
signicant and relevant matters. I congratulate the Young
Indians for their focus, energy and enthusiasm.
Yi has shown its tremendous growth potential this year by
increasing its spread within the country as well as through
its depth of activities. The commitment on part of the Yi
Chairman & Vice Chairman in engaging the youth in the
various activities of Yi is indeed a commendable feat. I
take this opportunity to felicitate the entire team of Young
Indians led by Dr Rahul Mirchandani. I believe that in the
coming years Yi would grow as a strong organisation and
move forward with a rm resolve of carrying forward its
goal & spirit of We Can, We Will. I look forward to an even
larger engagement of Yi in leading India into the future.

Executive Director,

To all my friends at Yi
Yi has had a superb year. It is with great pleasure that I
present to you ourFourth Annual Reportthat captures
the breadth and impact of our activities across each of
Yis chapters, platforms and initiatives.
I must begin by appreciating the energy, enthusiasm and
zest of every Yi ofce bearer, Yi member and the team of
Executive members who have collectively made this year
so successful.
This was Yis year of scaling up. We launchednine
new chapters during the year at Thiruvananthapuram,
Guwahati, Erode, Vishakapatnam, Goa, Raipur, Srinagar,
Baroda and Madurai. We now have established a
presence in 25 cities with a total of1200 members.
The choice of these new locations demonstrates our
commitment to ensure that Young Indians even in smaller
towns are provided with access to a platform like Yi that
connects them with Industry and Young in Business
across India.
In addition, we have a strong and fast growing
membership base of4000 students drawn from59 Yi
Student Networks across India, 160 members across
3 corporate chapters and 8500 young farmers
enrolled through 2 Yi Farmers Nets.
We have rolled out a total of602 events and activities
during the year. This works out to an average of close
to 2 events a day. All of these activities were aligned to
Yis platforms and initiatives of education, environment,
employability, governance, art-culture-sport, healthcare,
youth affairs, farmer nets and next practices. Yis work
during the year has directlyimpacted over 6 lakhs
people. This is the rst year that we have started tracking
the member engagement and impact numbers for each
of our activities, with the objective of setting specic
benchmarks for us to evaluate the quantitative reach and
qualitative success of our efforts.
Nationally, Yi had a good mix of agship events. The
Indian Parliament Simulation at Kochi was a superb
experience for over 150 students who lived the role
of an elected parliamentarian, engaged in rigorously
researched discussion and constructive debate on
15 Indian issues, with the hope of understanding the
parliamentary system and nding possible solutions to
unique Indian problems. This provided extraordinaryleadership training and was a successful experiment to
get youth from 19 cities interested in looking at politics
as a career choice. In addition, the Yi Retreatat Tirupati
had a heady mix of some memorable trekking, adventure
sports and spiritual experiences.
OurOverseas Delegation to the United Kingdom met
with Lord Meghnand Desai at The House of Lords, Sir
Thomas Harris at Standard Chartered Bank and had an
interactive session with the UKIBC Next Gen Entrepreneurs.
We also had an interesting session on Innovation andEntrepreneurship with students at Oxford University. Yi had
its rst International Road Show in London and briefed
young overseas Indians on engaging with India as a crucial
stakeholder. Following this, we hosted a group of exchange
students from Oxford, Cambridge and London School of
Economics in Mumbai and interacted with the UK Deputy
High Commissioner, Ms Vicki Treadell on the Challenges of
Doing Business in India.
Yi also continuously engaged with key persons in
Government including Mr Rahul Gandhi, Mr ArunMaira, Mr Nandan Nilekani, Mr Shashi Tharoor, Ms
Supriya Sule, Ms Meenakshi Natarajan among many
others. The objective was to keep these key inuencers
appraised about Yi, our vision and our goals andseek
opportunities to work together with Government to
initiate and scale up activities and projects. We also had
the opportunity to carry out extensive voting awareness
campaigns before the National & State elections in 5
cities, with the highlight being our interaction with the
Chief Election Commissioner of India, Mr Navin Chawla,
in Mumbai, before the Maharashtra Assembly Elections.

Our Green-I - Yi Environment contest once again
highlighted ways to make school campuses more
environmentally sensitive. Over a 100 schools developed
working models for building more sustainable buildings.
In the education area, Yi has carried out an extensive
efcacy study for Yi Akshara our learning resource
centre for school children. The Yi Education team has
also initiated the process of customizing and localizingAkshara modules. We also have preparatory programs
underway that make children in urban slums ready for
entry to a formal schooling system. World Food Day was
observed across the country with 14 Yi chapters working
together for the rst time on a single standardized Yi
Healthcare project on a single day. The Healthcare
initiative also saw sessions and workshops on stress
management, lifestyle diseases, HIV, diabetes, heart
diseases, swine u, yoga and alternative medicine.
Employability is one of Indias key concerns. Yi hasscaled up its work in the Skills development area
by conducting Yi Labs programs focused on the
hospitality, food and retail sectors. In addition we have
also commenced work on piloting world class skills
certifcation programs in the Logistics and Agriculture
sectors. These programs will improve the employability
prospects of youth involved in these sectors and also
plug some crucial skills gaps that exist in these areas.
I have had the pleasure of personally visiting 17 of
Yis chapters during the year. The Coimbatore Vizha,Entrepreneurship conclaves, Yi Kochis EnYironmend
campaign, Dream City Projects, Regional Retreats, the
Aero Modelling show, among many other unique events
have immense potential for engaging members and the
wider stakeholder communities and should ideally be
scaled up. Our 3 corporate chapters at Infosys, MCX
and Impetus Technologies have done good work in the
areas of women empowerment, life skills to urban poor,
micronance and healthcare. Yis chapters also helped
rehabilitation of ood victims in Bihar and provided timely
ood relief in Andhra Pradesh.
Yi Youth Affairs continues to engage students with
meaningful projects and activities. Our students across
53 student networks have conceptualized and executed
projects that focus on leadership training, skill building
and community service. The Yi Youth Affairs program
trains students, connects them with Industry and
Young leaders, enables nation building initiatives and
challenges them to think big and think different. It is also
key to shaping young minds and preparing Yis future
membership base.
Yi Farmer Nets currently involve over 8500 young,
progressive farmers in knowledge sharing platforms. The
years theme for both the networks supported by Aries Agro
Limited and Galla Foods was building a dialogue towards
evolving a framework for Indian Good Agricultural practices
(Indo-GAP). Over 175 knowledge dissemination activities
were undertaken across 11 states impacting over 11000
farmers and rural children from agricultural communities. These events exposed farmers to best practices using study
tours and workshops, connected them with Agricultural
Universities and also educated Rural school students in over
65 secondary schools on latest agricultural practices that
will help improve productivity and consequently improve the
ecosystem of wealth creation in rural communities. Yi also
surveyed over 800 farmers net members and prepared a
comprehensive document that captured ways that Young
farmers are affected by and coping with Climate Change.
This report was prepared for the Copenhagen Summit.
We also conducted two very successful National Agromax
conferences in Guwahati, Assam and in Hissar, Haryana.
Together these two agship events had close to 4000
young farmers in attendance and had a galaxy of over 40
speakers and involved 5 State Governments, 9 Agricultural
Universities and many agribusiness corporates. Farmers
were also provided with commodity prices, crop advisories
and weather alerts throughout the year using mobile phone
text messages. Yi has also begun an iterative process
of identifying 10 farmers each year who have achieved
superlative levels of productivity and documenting and
evangelizing these innovative crop management methods
as Farming Next Practices.
The pursuit of Innovation and the identication of game
changing ideas is key to ensuring development of sectors
and also offer investment opportunities for companies. Yi
Next Practices provided a platform to energize young
inventors to showcase their path breaking technologies
and prototypes. We did this with the India Innovation
Initiative (i3) in partnership with Department of Science &
Technology- Government of India and the CII. Of several
innovations showcased in an exhibition, 10 were picked
up by IIM-Ahmedabad for a year long incubation program.
We have also partnered with Dell and UTVi for a year long
national business plan contest titled Take your Own Path
to provide an opportunity for students with innovative
business plans to move fromideas to enterprise.
Several efforts were also made to strengthen member
communication using periodical Yi Link, the Yi Ning forum
and other online social networks set up nationally and at
each chapter. These have kept the Yi membership, select CII
members and other stakeholders up-to-date on Yis progress

The two basic processes of education
are knowing and valuing. At Yi,
education as a resource is used
to enhance students faculties and achieve
their overall growth and development through
myriad initiatives, thereby enriching their
horizons and providing them opportunities for
holistic well being. Unique educational models
and one-to-one student teacher interactions
further hone the learning process.
Yi Akshara
Akshara is a primary learning resource centre.
Currently there are 51 centres at 10 locations
covering 15000 students with 174 Learning
materials in 90 bilingual languages sourced
from NGOs across the country that supplement
primary education of class 1 to 5, supported
by 200 teachers. Akshara is based on a unique
model where teachers are given training to
impart knowledge to the children. Yi got an
Akshara evaluation done to check the efcacy
of the programme. The idea behind this survey
was to assess, across stakeholders, the extent
to which the objectives of Akshara had been
met during the previous year. The survey, that
was done in partnership with IMRB international,
found the improvement areas that Yi has been
following for its Aksharas. The survey covered
400 participants from eight Chapters comprising
