Introduction of adlay and its health functions Coix (Coix lachryma-jobi L.var. Ma-yuen Stapf) is a grass annual herbs. Adlay has long been used as traditional medicine and a nourishing food in China. It has also been reported to help strengthen spleen, be stomachic, diuretic, antipholgistic, anodynic, skin whitening and antitumor. According to the ancient Chinese medical documents and modern science studies, adlay could be used in assisting tumor therapy, immunomodulatory, regulation of blood glucose and lipids, modulation of female sexual hormones; it could increase bone density and function as antioxidant. Since the health function of adlay has been proved by several science studies, some healthy food using adlay as main ingredient have been developed. It should be noted that not all of adlay breeds have the same health function. Besides following these principles of balanced nutrition, there is also a way to improve modern people’s health through “new thinking and new ways.” Individual differences lead to variation in physiological responses to the same diet. Therefore, in addition to a balanced nutrition, it is also important to have proper food and suitable health food to imporve one’s own health status. IntroductionWith a stressful and busy urban lifestyle, plus an unhealthy diet, people nowadays are often worried about health issues. The concept of a healthy life is being taken more and more seriously by the public. The present exhibition connects three themes in daily lives, ranging from healthy diet and indoor plants, to a green environment, while displaying the psychological and physiological health benefits of nature. We are looking forward to having you join us to adopt a healthy natural lifestyle.

香草植物及其應用香草植物源於藥草的概念而來,「Herbs」由拉丁文Herba而來,原意為草本植物,後

來的解釋為「有用的植物」。此後又衍生為「具有香味,可以用於醫療,及作香料增

添風味之植物」,因此範圍遍及整個植物界,包括了喬木、灌木、草本和真菌類。香

草植物用處包含:

1. 精油-用途最多也最廣泛,除了添加於高級香水中外,還可以調入化妝保養品等用

品中,甚至用於室內的薰香劑。

2. 料理美味與茶飲-常利用於餐飲調味或直接泡茶飲用。

3. 居家擺飾利用-香草植物加工後可作為家中的擺飾品,如乾燥的香草植物做為香

袋、香包、薰衣草束,以及由柳丁和丁香製成的香球等。

4. 休閒體驗-與休閒農場結合,成為休閒、教育的好組合。讓遊客看、聞、食、娛一

舉數得。

Aromatic plant and applications The concept of aromatic plants is derived from the concept of herbs (Latin herba), which originally meant herbaceous plants but was later generalized as “useful plants”. It has developed to refer to “plants with fragrance which can be used for medical care or to add flavor to food.” It includes all kinds of plants, including trees, shrubs, herbs, and fungi. The following lists demonstrate the functions of herbs:1. Essential oil: Essential oil is versatile and is extensively used. In addition to adding

fragrance to high-level perfume, it can also be mixed into cosmetic products and cleaning supplies, or used as an indoor incense agent.

2. Delicious cuisine and tea: It is often used to add flavor to food or can be directly drunk as tea.

3. Using herbs as house decoration: After being processed, herbs can be used as home ornaments, such as dried herbs: Sachets, Lavender beam, and the fragrant ball made of oranges and cloves.

4. Leisure experience--The use of herbs in leisure farms can be a perfect combination of leisure and education.

健康環境,健康人生在充滿壓力的繁忙都市生活中,都市綠地空間提供了現代人

休閒遊憩的場所,也給予我們身心紓緩的機會,尤其是在愈

自然的環境中,通常心情會特別放鬆。您是否注意到自然環

Healthy environment.Healthy people Urban life is stressful and hectic. Urban green spaces provide places for people to have leisure time and an opportunity to obtain physical and mental relief. We usually feel more relaxed in a natural environment. Have you noticed that nature can give you many different feelings and benefits?

健康環境與注意力恢復力在許多研究中證實自然環境對於壓力釋放及情緒恢復具有相當的正面效益。Kaplan與

Kaplan ( 1989)提出「注意力恢復理論」 (Attention restoration theory , ART),認為自然

可提供使心理疲勞獲得恢復的恢復體驗,並提出有助於注意力恢復的環境因子,其中

包括:

.遠離日常生活(Being away)-是指一個與日常生活環境相當不同的地方。.魅力性(Fascination) -指此環境可引發不須費力或自然而然產生的注意力,此種魅力

可來自於環境中的元素或過程。

.延展性(Extent) -指此環境具有豐富和協調的環境資源,能夠使人心靈契合,促進其

產生探索的動機。

.相容性(Compatibility) -指此環境能夠支持個人喜好或意圖的環境。

注意力恢復理論認為含括上述四種特徵的環境,便是可令人恢復注意力疲累(Attention

Fatigue)的環境,而自然環境與較具其他種類的環境更具上述的環境因子。由於自然環

境具有多元豐富性和連貫性,動物、植物、水景皆為魅力性的來源,並可讓人有遠離

忙碌生活的感受,對於恢復人的生心理健康具有相當良好的效益。

Healthy Environment and Attention Restoration TheoryVarious studies have verified that natural environments do have positive effects for relieving stress and calming the emotions. The Attention Restoration Theory (ART) proposed by Kaplan & Kaplan in 1989 indicates that nature can provide recuperation in relation to mental fatigue. ART proposes that restoration occurs in environments and situations that involve four components:

室內植物的益處1. 減少空氣污染-植物與外界進行的氣體交換是由高濃度往低濃度擴散,所以大氣中

濃度之空氣汙染物會往植物體內擴散,降低空氣中的汙染濃度。

2. 減少落塵量-植物能有效吸附大量塵埃,依其不同特性,可區分為停著、附著和黏

著三種。

3. 吸收二氧化碳-綠色植物於光合作用過程中,經由氣孔吸收二氧化碳並固定為有機

酸或醣類儲存,可減少室內二氧化碳累積量。

4. 移除有機揮發物質(Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs) -目前已有許多研究證實擺放

盆栽可有效減少室內累積的多種VOCs,而移除VOCs 的能力與植物種類、時間、光

度、污染物種類皆有相關。

The benefits of indoor plants1. To reduce air pollution: The gas exchange process between plants and the outside world

depends on the diffusion from high concentration to low concentration. Therefore, the density of air pollutants in the atmosphere will spread to the plants, reducing the concentration of pollution in the air.

2. To reduce the amount of dust: Plants catch dust effectively. According to the mechanism, the dust-catching process can be divided into three types: dust-parking, dust-attaching and dust-sticking.

3. To absorb carbon dioxide: Within a photosynthesis process, plants absorb carbon dioxide through their stomata and transform it into fixed organic acids or carbohydrates for energy storage, thereby reducing the indoor accumulation of carbon dioxide.

4. To remove volatile organic substances (Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs): Many studies have proved that placing potted plants can reduce the accumulation of a variety of indoor VOCs effectively. The ability to remove VOCs is related to plant type, time, light intensity, and pollutant type.

may come from environmental elements or the process itself..Compatibility: This refers to environment that is able to support personal interests or intentions..Extant: This refers to environment that provides enough magnitude for one to become immersed in it,

which could promote their motivation to explore.

According to ART, an environment with the four abovementioned components is regarded as a restorative environment. Natural environments are full of these four components, possessing diverse, rich and coherent landscapes. Animals, trees, plants, and natural water features are the best sources of fascination. It also leads to feelings of having successfully escaped from the stress of daily life. Hence, the natural environments are conducive to human health.

健康環境效益自然環境可對人的健康產生良好的效益,國內

外已有諸多研究證實多接觸自然景觀可減緩日

常生活的焦慮感(Ulrich and Parsons,1992)、心

靈疲憊的恢復(Kaplan and Kaplan, 1989)、降低

疲勞感(Trancik and Evan,1995) 等達到放鬆身心

的效果。或許你認為自然環境離都市生活很遙遠,然而窗景的綠意、公園花草及綠色校園等都市

綠地,都是唾手可得的自然環境,只要您多花點心思,就可體驗大自然的健康力量。

Benefits of a healthy environment Natural environments offer many benefits for health. Empirical studies have confirmed the effects of natural environments, such as releasing the anxiety in daily life (Ulrich and Parsons, 1992), countering mental fatigue (Kaplan and Kaplan, 1989) and reducing weariness (Trancik and Evan, 1995). You may think that nature is too far away from urban life. However, urban green spaces like green window views, parks, and school gardens are actually easy to access. You only need to pay more attention and spend some time in green environments; in this way,you can experience the therapeutic power of nature.
