to this edition of Music Notes. Please enjoy this celebration of achievements within our Music community.

Term three is always very busy, with our school concerts, chamber series, ABODA festivals along with a number of external events hosted by the Churchlands Concert Hall. Do we know how lucky we are to have thismagnificent facility? Our music students and teachers continue to AIM HIGH, and this is certainly evident in every performance I have had the pleasure of attending. I am continually surprised at the growth in talent of our music students. They are, after all, still young people, so the standard they present truly is remarkable. The quality of music exhibited at these performances is a testament to the dedication of our students and teachers.

Thank you to each of you who has volunteered to help at any of the events over the past term. Your commitment to help the MPC fulfil its role contributes to the success of the music department, and ultimately, to your children. I would especially like to congratulate and thank our ABODA team: Julie Carmichael, Lynn Canes, Amanda Vanderputten and Brett Coombes. The effort and hours these fine people put into their roles was, in keeping with what the adjudicators said about our ensembles, OUTSTANDING.

It was a pleasure meeting many of you. I look forward to meeting many more!Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

nd yet again we stumble across the finish line at the end of Term 3,

having managed multiple performances at 4 different festivals, 3 concertseasons, special concerts filled with laughter and joy, and times of deepsadness. I cannot thank the musicparents enough who have supported and carried us through all of these events, with their time, care and enthusiasm. Welcome to the new MPC convener Annie; please give her and the MPC your full support. In the end it is your children who benefit from the

wonderful efforts of the parent volunteers.

I would like to mention the following ladies who provided a very special morning tea to lift the spirits of the music staff after our dear Year 9 guitarist Ruby Malcolm passed away; Lisa Gleeson, Jennifer Giacomel, Kathryn Almeida, Julie Carmichael and Annie Halse Smith. Thank you ladies, for your thoughtfulness and consideration.

By the time you have received this, our Year 12 students will have started their practical music assessments (aka recitals) and will be only a couple of weeks away from their written exams. On behalf of the music staff and students at Churchlands who have watched with delight as they gained in confidence and ability before taking the lead themselves, I wish them the very best for all of their exams and hope that they can keep the next couple of months of their lives balanced.

You will find the Term 4 rehearsal schedule included in this newsletter and with the exception of the jazz ensembles, all rehearsals start day one, week one of Term 4. Next year’s rehearsal timetable will be out around the middle of term 4 and will look quite different from the timetable this year as we try to reduce the number of early mornings our more senior students have in the course of a week; stay tuned!

Term 4 will have its share of performing opportunities with performances for the Premier, the Churchlands Foundation, Jazz ensembles at the Ellington, Oktoberfest, the Year 12 Presentation ceremony, the WA Police Pipes and Drums Golden Jubilee concert, the music graduation ceremony,Remembrance Day, and the Christmas concert to name a few, keeping staff and students on their toes. Our numbers in the music programme are set to grow again - next year’s Year 7 intake is currently 156, compared with around 120 this year. We’ll be emptying out a few of our store rooms to find them space for lessons. It does make for a very large Dooverlackie choir aswell - watch out at next year’s junior concert as they all file on to the stage.

The last two weekends saw the annual ensemble placement auditions which put each of our 400+ Year 6 - 11 band and orchestra students on the spot, looked deep within their souls, evaluated their progress, and assigned them to the ensemble that best matched their educational journey. This is a huge process to manage and involves a team of music teachers working most of two Saturdays listening to anxious and hopeful children. Kristel Hawksworth managed the string auditions and was supported by Jessica Daniel, Anna Person, Anne Hanrahan, Miranda Sims, Paul Sealey, Dale Pointon, Sara Duhig, and Dr Rebecca Meegan-Lowe. Caron Walker was coor-dinator of the woodwind, brass, and percussion auditions and was

supported by Diane Riddell, Natalie Dixon, Lynda Luce, Kathy Younger, Melissa Skinner, Grant Rickman, Robyn Griffin, Adam Hawksworth, Bob Matthews, Paul Duhig, Andrew Braham, Mirelle Hopwood, Nicole Turner, Dale Pointon and Lee Stanley.

During this vacation many of the music teachers will be finishing up their Australian Kodály Certificate studies for the year. Kristel Hawksworth, Paul Sealey and Ursula Greig are completing their third year of the course, Mirelle Hopwood and Miranda Sims are completing their second year and Anne Hanrahan has been auditing the course this year to keep her hand (signs) in. Churchlands’ ensemble directors Melissa Skinner, Robyn Griffin, Mirelle Hopwood, Christie Sullivan, Nicole Turner (ABODA WA President), Caron Walker, Dale Pointon and Lee Stanley will all be heading to the Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference at the start of the holidays. This event is held at the Sydney Conservatorium and brings together professional development, outstanding performances, and a distinguished collection of international and domestic presenters, conductors and performers. I would like to thank Churchlands SHS for their support, enabling so many of the staff to attend.

Thank you all for your part in a big and busy year so far, we’re almost there.

ABODA FESTIVAL

nce again, the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA)

festivals were hosted by Churchlands Senior High School and were a huge success. Our talented musicians walked away with eight ‘Outstanding’ results and one ‘Excellent’. Our Music Parents’ Committee volunteers dedicated many hours to assist with the organisation and logistics of running the festivals - from car-parking to raffles, to running the kiosk and barbecue - in order to raise valuable funds for the School of Music. Over $15,000 wasgenerated over the two weekends! We would like to thank all of the parent and student volunteers who donated their valuable time to help make this the success it was.

O

For me as parking co-ordinator it meant many, many hours

of emails, phone calls, begging, pleading and much number-crunching and frustration before the event. But when the time came volunteers arrived, often out of the blue, unexpected, just exactly when they were most needed, as if some higher power had taken over. In the end, it all came together like a beautiful symphony. A multitude of people chipped in to help and even made it fun! I enjoyed the fruits of my labour, thanks to the great spirit of my wonderful volunteers.

Over two weekends and two nights, we put in 208 hours of baton waving between 48 volunteers, 13 of whom are students and 3 children of parent volun-teers. Everyone did a great job, and my thanks go to all that helped out.

We always need people to help direct traffic at our music events. It’s a very easy but extremely important job. Please consider helping out.

hank you to Phil and Sue Blann for once again providing us with the use

of two coffee machines at the ABODA festivals. The coffee was lovely and the aroma filled the Concert Hall foyer and drew in the customers. Thank you both for setting up and cleaning the machines each day, especially Phil who helped out during the busiest times, making heaps of coffees over the three festivals.

he Beatles once sang “I get by with a little help from my friends” and this couldn’t have been more relevant as I started organising ABODA this

year. Since the opening of the Concert Hall Bev Petrie has run ABODA, firstly with Helen Schurman in 2013 and then with me as second in charge for 2014 and 2015. After over 120 hours of serving coffees and feeding adjudicators, Bev needed to step back. However, Bev still came and helped a lot over the two weekends and I am extremely grateful.

A huge THANK YOU must go to Amanda Vanderputten and Brett Coombes for coming on board to run the BBQ section following a shift of MPC roles. Amanda is AMAZING and bubbly and fun. Her dear husband “volunteered” (GOT TOLD) to help and together they ran an extremely efficient operation! Brett is a quiet, diligent worker and his Bunnings BBQ experience wasinvaluable. Thank you also to his dear wife, Jacquie, for entertaining their overseas visitors while Brett cooked sausages for ABODA!

The last in our ABODA quartet is the lovable Lynn Canes, who became parking co-ordinator without actually saying “yes”; MAGIC! Like Anne-Laure before her, Lynn dropped into the cafe for an occasional well-earned break and entertained us with her parking stories. Amidst waving her baton high, she juggled day surgery, really bad ‘flu, volunteering at the animal rescue shelter (her other passion), nearly disassembling the new bike racks and getting chatted up by a school bus driver! Lynn could not have done it all without the help of Hendrik and Chris and her many other faithful helpers.

An extra-big thank you goes to all the parents who prepared food and

helped me serve and make coffee over the seven days of the festivals, and the talented bakers and cooks for providing lots of scrumptious food to sell and to feed the adjudicators with – cupcakes, muffins, gluten free slices, chicken curry, soup, and a wide range of other sweet and savoury delights. It was a rather complex task accommodating the wide range of special dietary requirements; from vegan, vegetarian and lactose intolerance, to chocolate, dairy and avocado allergies. A special acknowledgement must be made to Marina for providing over 200 cupcakes for the two weekends, decorated beautifully with flakes and frogs and delicious icing (not to mention the hundreds of others she has donated since 2013).

And to everybody else who chipped in to help - our efficient Treasurer Rachel Clegg who sorted all our money and helped ABODA staff with change as well as making treats to sell; Ros Dungey, for setting up Doodle so parents could roster on; Mr Robinson, Ms Turner, Ms Griffin and Helena Francis for all their help wearing Teacher, ABODA Staff, Director and Parent Help “HATS”; Community Service Coordinator; Ms Wogan, who organised all the student help within days of returning from long service leave; and of course, all the eager student volunteers who gave up their weekend time to assist with kiosk, barbecue and parking duties, filling fridges, collecting cups, washing up, making coffee, selling raffle tickets - a sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU!!

Finally, a special thank you to my daughter who helped out, and my hubbie for buying supplies when we ran out. And very importantly, my son who was my secretary and printed and copied and pasted everything for me so I got through it all in tact - thank you, Aaron!

WA Massed Choir Festival

ach year, for a week in September, thousands of children come from across the metro area to perform in the WA Massed Choir Festival at

UWA’s spectacular Winthrop Hall. Over six nights the children perform a variety of quality choral repertoire accompanied by professional musicians, as well as our very own Churchlands String Quartets. These studentsperformed admirably each night, utilising the full spectrum of theirmusicianship and experience to represent our music department with great flare and professionalism. What brilliant ambassadors they are for our school and our program - bravo!

The CSHS students who performed were: Aaron Dungey, Daniel Drieberg, Fabian Schefler, Robyn Blann, Yasmin Osman, Halynn Moon, James Wayte, Andrew Crothers, Laura Tan, Miranda Murray Yong, Abigail Chong, Tze Wen Lee

TERM REVIEWBonnie and Clyde

n Week 2 of Term 3, Trinity Ellis (Blanche Barrow), Caitlin Tan (Emma Parker, Stella)

and I, Sofie Kerr (Young Bonnie) performed Bonnie and Clyde the musical with Hale School and their Redfoot Youth Theatre. The show is set in 1930’s Texas during the Great Depression. It follows the true story of Bonnie Parker, who dreamed of becoming an actress in the movies, and Clyde Barrow, who aspired to be an outlaw like Billy the Kid. They meet and fall in love and drive across Texas, running from the law, robbing and stealing until they finally meet their end and are ambushed by the police. There was a very vigorous rehearsal processleading up to the show so we could learn

how to perform with the amazing set and tech that was used throughout the show. We worked with a small cast of about 23 people mainly from Years 10-12, and two Year 9’s playing Young Bonnie and Young Clyde. The boys all came from Hale School and the rest of the cast came from Churchlands SHS, St Mary’s and John XXIII. We worked with Belinda Massey (Director) and Su-Lyn Chong (Musical Director), who also conducted a great band featuring some of the Hale staff and students. ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ was such a great experience for everyone involved and will be something we will remember forever!

UWA Masters Percussion Student - Adam Tan:Presenting ‘Macro-Kinetics’ in Performance Concepts

n Friday, September 9th September, all of the percussion students at Churchlands SHS were treated to a presentation on the specific percussion performance technique

‘Macro-Kinetics’, by UWA Masters student, Adam Tan. Adam began his percussion studies with Nikki Turner in 2006 and now studies under Dr Louise Devenish at UWA.

Macro-Kinetics is fundamentally the conveyance of musical concepts through movements utilised throughout the performance. As percussionists, a hit is a hit, be it loud/fast (forte/allegro) or quiet/slow (piano/andante); the only thing that varies is the stroke height and speed. Bang still equals bang! So movement is the other method percussionists need to utilise overtly in order to convey smooth/legato versus staccato/detached, the shaping of phrases, and the implied peak of a phrase which contain minimal dynamic contrast.

The students gained a great deal of valuable information from Adam and the Year 12’s were particularly grateful to have these specific points to ponder prior to their external WACE Performance Exams. Our sincere thanks goes to Adam for sharing his time and knowledge with our percussion students this year.

Back to School for Taryn Fiebig

n the night of Friday August 19, Churchlands Senior High School had theopportunity to welcome back and celebrate one of the brightest of the many

shining stars who can trace their beginnings to the nurturing environment of our School of Music. This particular star was so bright on stage that she lit up theaudience with her humour, anecdotes, and the beauty and richness of her amazing voice. Taryn Fiebig, class of 1989 and now Helpmann Award-winning principalsoprano at Opera Australia, was back at Churchlands to work with G&T voicestudents and to celebrate her connection with the school that started her on her journey. Taryn was accompanied on the night by noted pianist Mark Coughlan and together they put on a mesmerising performance while the audience held theircollective breath. Taryn was assisted on the night by special guest performers, including Year 12 Laura Tan, Year 8 Phoebe Tait, and recent graduate KatherineGoyder (class of 2012). Taryn finished the concert with an audience wanting more and this quote: “You can have all of the potential in the world, but if you don’t have the right kind of music teachers, you’re stuffed!”

Junior Ensembles workshop

n 27 July, the Junior Ensembles workshop was held. Anne Hanrahan requested help from the MPC to provide a sausage sizzle to the famishedparticipants. Anita Greed and her trusted team, including 2015 graduates Christopher Greed and Jordan Price, barbecued sausages galore and served

them with a smile. Bronte Smith helped dish out the chocolates. But with not quite enough parent helpers on the day to cater to all the hungry musicstudents, who would come to the rescue? Not only are our teachers good at music and Mr Robinson a fantastic DOM, but they know how to put abanga in a roll!! Principal’s Postlude

Mr Neil Hunt, Principal

As the music program and Concert Hall activities for Term 3 draw to a close it is an excellent opportunity to reflect on what has occurred. My first thoughts begin with the return of former Muso and Head Girl from the class of 1989, Taryn Fiebig. Taryn, currently the Principal Soprano for Australian Opera, gave an amazing performance on Friday, 19 August to an almost-capacity Churchlands Concert Hall. Taryn was accompanied throughout by Mark Coughlan, who was outstanding as always, andsupported by the exceptional talent of students from Churchlands, Laura Tan on Cello, Year 8 vocalist Phoebe Tait and class of 2012 mezzo-soprano Kate Goyder. During her performance, not only did Taryn acknowledge her teachers and her school from where her career began, but she also gave master classes to up and coming Churchlands vocalists on the days prior to herperformance. Congratulations to all involved.

This unique opportunity was made possible, initially through long-term mathematics teacher Geoff Parker whose suggestion it was for Taryn to take on the event, to the Churchlands Foundation who coordinated and produced the event and to Sandalford Wines, our major event sponsor. I would like to acknowledge and thank each of these individuals and groups.

Term 3 is also exceptionally busy with the ABODA festivals which give our students the opportunity to perform and get feedback. The weekends also provide our hard working and dedicated music parents an opportunity to fund raise through a range ofinitiatives. To parents, music teachers and performing students, congratulations on a fantastic effort throughout this festival season.

I attended the final Senior Concert late August and the range and quality of performances continues to demonstrate theoutstanding calibre of the Churchlands SHS music program and its graduates. Again, well done to all concerned and best wishes to Year 12 music students, particularly ATAR students who will commence their practical exams during the October holidays.
