READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 9, 2018
2nd Sunday in Advent
"In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar...and Herod was
tetrarch of Galilee...and Lysanias was tetrach of..." Did you need to pinch
yourself awake during the first few lines of this Sunday's Gospel? John the
Baptist received quite a prelude today as Luke described the religious and
political leadership of the time period. Scripture is divinely inspired, and
we believe that everything that made it into the Bible is there for a reason.
These lines remind us of an important truth. The Christmas story isn't a
fairy tale or nursery rhyme. It's not a parable we say to give meaning to the
holiday. At Christmas, God's presence is made tangible in a precise
moment in time. The birth of Christ is a historical event. As precursor to
Jesus' preaching, the ministry of John the Baptist is also a historical event.
"Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John's call to
repentance and the forgiveness of sins happened in a particular time and
place. But that does not mean it is limited to first century Palestine! God
continues to move in our daily lives. What we hear in today's Gospel - and
what we anticipate at Christmas - occurs in our daily lives. God works in
concrete ways in time and space. He did that 2,000 years ago, and He
continues to do so today!
This Sunday, examine your own Christmas preparations. Is there
anything you need to repent of before the Christmas season? Are there low
points in your life, valleys to "be filled" by the love of God? Are their
mountainous obstacles in your spiritual life? How can they be "made low"?
Are you making decisions that have moved you away from God? This
Advent season is the time for them to "be made straight and made smooth."
Prepare the way in your heart for Christ today!
USE OF HOLY TRINITY AND HOLY SPIRIT CHURCH OR
HALL BUILDINGS FOR MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES OF ANY
KIND must be scheduled in the parish offices by the person who is using
the facility. Staff will mark activities on the parish calendar. This request
is necessary to prevent double booking of space. All requests will be
honored if made thru the parish office staff unless something else is all
ready scheduled for that time. Thank you for your co-operation in this
matter. ~Fr. Matt

FRIDAY’S TABLE GIVING TREE: The Youth Ministry
Program will be participating in a “Giving Tree Project”
again this year with Friday’s Table. Gift tags are filled out by
the Friday’s Table participants with the help of the teens from
the Youth Ministry Program. The tags are put on a tree in
Spirit Central for the teens to take and bring home so they,
along with their families , can shop for the person they
picked. The gifts will then be delivered to Friday’ Table by
the teens before Christmas. If anyone in the parish would like
to donate any items such as blankets, gloves, hats, etc., please
drop your donation off to the office before Sunday, December
16th. Labeled “Friday’s Table Giving Project.” This is a total
different project than the gift tag trees we did for Maternity
Services in the past. If you have any questions, please contact
Ann Simonson.
ELEMENTARY FAITH FORMATION

Class Mass at 10:00 A.M. at Holy Trinity. Please keep these
young people in your prayers as they prepare to participate in
the Mass.

GIFT TAG PROJECT: Due to the fact that
Maternity Services has moved out of our
area, we have reached out to the local
Domestic Violence House and the Salvation
Army. We have teamed up with these
organizations this year to help those in need.
The trees with the gift tags are located at all
three of the church entrances. If you take a
tag, please bring the gift you purchased back by
December 13th. The gifts are all getting picked up on
December 14! Please make sure that your gift is unwrapped
and has the gift tag attached to it . You may put them in a
gift bag if you wish. Gifts can be returned and put under the
trees in church or dropped off at the church office. We thank
you so much for your continued giving each year to those in
need. THIS PROJECT IS SEPARATE FROM THE
FRIDAY’S TABLE GIVING TREE PROJECT.
LIFE ISSUES and the N.Y.S. LEGISLATURE Senate Bill
S7863, sponsored by Sen. Jim Tedisco, will allow parents the
right to request the remains of their miscarried children from
the hospital. The current law only allows the request to be
made if the unborn fetus is beyond 20 weeks. This legislation
would let the family bury and grieve their unborn child
respectfully rather than have him/her disposed of as medical
waste. We should thank him for this compassionate
legislation. Read more at: https://

Gov. Cuomo has promised swift action to expand abortions to
full-term within the first 30 days of 2019. This is not basic
health care. The results will not be good for any of us. Let
him know that his Abortion Expansion Bill should be
dropped. Read more at:
