The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Twenty: The Na vity of Our Lord, con nued…

Jesus could have been born anywhere he wanted, but He chose to be born in humble circumstances. His first shelter was with animals—in a barn, shed or cave. His first bed was a manger—that is, a feeding trough for animals. His first years were spent as a refugee—in exile in Egypt, hiding from King Herod. His stepfather, Saint Joseph, was a carpenter—not a member of the ruling class. He lived in a conquered na on—occupied by troops of the Roman Empire.

Why did he choose to come into the world in this way? I think one reason was to teach us the value of humility. Humility is the path to true happiness and greatness—not an impressive house, beau ful furniture, a stable living situa on, material wealth or poli cal independence.

To have humility, we need to have faith in God. We need to have faith that He loves us, will always provide what we need, will bring good out of everything that happens, and will never leave us or forsake us. Only firm faith in God can give us the inner security we need to face life’s constant changes, the peace we need to survive the evils storming all around us, and the inner freedom we need to say “no” to the tempta ons to seek happiness in people and things that can never sa sfy.

Many people in our day, as in years and ages past, spend enormous amounts of me and energy “striving a er wind,” to quote Sacred Scripture (Ecclesiastes 1:14, 2:11 and 6:9). The fu lity of so much of human ac vity is also summed up in the Lord’s words that He spoke through the Prophet Jeremiah: “My people have commi ed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13) In biblical language, “living water” refers, in a physical way, to running water. In a spiritual way, if refers to the Holy Spirit. In context, God is trying to get the Israelites to see the folly of idolatry—that is, pu ng their trust in lifeless “gods” instead of in Him, the Author of Life.

There are broken cisterns all around us—a empts to find happiness in ways that are bound to disappoint. Some have been around us a for long me—power, hoarded wealth, materialism, pleasure, fame, success, popularity and physical a rac veness. Others have newer names—like diversity, inclusiveness, equality and choice. Not that these things are bad in themselves. The problem is when people worship them instead of God, or use them to jus fy sin.

Jesus always points us away from the broken cisterns and toward God, the fountain of living waters. The circumstances in which He chose to be born are part of this. They are a sign helping people to li their hearts and minds to God.

How about us? We can’t chose where we are born, but we can choose what we do and say day by day. Do our words and ac ons encourage people to con nue in their fu le ways—striving a er wind and hewing out broken cisterns? Or does what we say and do point people to God?

Humility points to God in a beau ful way. The humble person has no desire to build up his own kingdom and knows he couldn’t even if he tried. He is content with God’s Kingdom. He doesn’t worry about whether or not other people love or like him because he is more than sa sfied with God’s love.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is a beau ful example of humility. May she—the most humble woman ever to live and at the same me the Queen of Heaven—pray for us, that we always choose the path of humility too.

In Christ with Mary, Father Rudolph

Lucy (“Lucia”) was born on December 13,1476 in the town of Narni in the region of Italy known as Umbria. She was the eldest of eleven children. From an early age she wanted to consecrate her life to God, but her guardians—her father died when she was a child—had other ideas for her. At one point when she was fourteen, they tried to force her into marriage. She threw the ring on the floor, slapped the face of the intended bridegroom, and ran from the room. But the next year she agreed to get married, upon the advice of her confessor and, she said, or Our Lady, who reportedly appeared to her in a vision. She married a young man named Pietro de Alessio, but it turned out to be a marriage in name only, and a er about three years Pietro told her she was free to go and do as she pleased. Lucy moved into her mother’s house, then joined communi es of Third Order Dominicans, first in Rome and then in Viterbo, where she received the s gmata, which appeared every Wednesday and Saturday. Lucy was examined by a number of Church authori es, including a bishop and Pope Alexander VI’s personal physician. They all came as scep cs but le convinced that the phenomena were genuine. Her husband Pietro, too, came to see her and was convinced. He is said to have joined the Friars Minor (Franciscans) as a result. She then came under the influence of Ercole I, Duke of Ferrara. With her permission and that of the Pope, he built a convent for her in the town of Ferrara. To get her out of Viterbo, he had to smuggle her out hidden in a clothes basket strapped to the back of a mule. But once Lucy was installed as the convent’s Superior, it became evident that she lacked the age, experience and gi s to carry out that role well. To add to her difficul es, the Duke’s daughter-in-law recruited a number of recruits for the convent who were not suitable. Then, in 1505, Duke Ercole died. Deprived of her protector, Lucy, who had up to now filled the role imposed on her as a kind of fashionable mys c, moved into the hidden life in which she was to spend the last thirty-nine years of her life. The new prioress treated her with cruel harshness. But it was in these years that Lucy earned her reputa on for holiness. She was never impa ent, and no one ever heard her complain, even when she was sick and le una ended. So complete was her self-effacement and obscurity that when she died on November 15, 1544, the people of Ferrara were surprised to find out that she had s ll been alive all those years. She was venerated as a saint immediately and so many people came to pray at her tomb at the convent that it was moved to the cathedral, where miracles were a ributed to her intercession. Blessed Lucy of Narni, pray for us! ST. RAPHAEL ANNUAL CHRISTMAS VILLAGE Saturday, December 1st

8:30 am - 2:00 pm

Are you doing your fall house cleaning and finding new items hidden away in your closets that you don’t want anymore? When you are out shopping, and finding some great deals, would you consider buying something extra to donate to our upcoming Christmas Village?

Dona ons are needed for the General Store and Jolly Jars and may be dropped off at the Parish Office by Wednesday, November 28th.

Call Anne at 612-860-1454 with ques ons.

Hymn Board/Pew Missal Guide The wooden song boards now display the Sunday of the year (e.g. 32nd OT means 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time) and a page number. The page number on the board indicates the page number in the Pew Missal where the readings may be found. (Page numbers in the Pew Missal are found at the bo om of the page.) We hope displaying this informa on will help parishioners, new and old, to more easily find the Readings and An phons for the day.

The electronic (red number) hymn boards will be used to display hymn numbers. Hymns are found in the rear of the Pew Missal and have large black numbers by the tle of the hymn which is in red.

We are doing this because it can be confusing to list both page numbers and hymn numbers on the same boards. Because of limited space on the wooden song board we abbreviate Ordinary Time by the capital le ers, “O T”. Most Sundays of the year are Ordinary Time. During Advent, Lent, and the Easter Season, you will probably see something like “Advent 1” or “Lent 4” with a page number.

To summarize, look to the wooden hymn boards for the page numbers of the Readings and An phons in the Pew Missal. Use the red numbers to find the hymns in the rear of the Pew Missal.

TO ALL OF OUR VETERANS -

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

GOD BLESS YOU!

New Bulle n Sponsorship Announcement

The St. Raphael weekly bulle n is our primary means of communica ng informa on to our members on a weekly basis. Recently we began searching for a bulle n publisher who could offer more than just prin ng services. Star ng on Sunday, January 27th, 2019, LPi will begin publishing our weekly bulle n.

LPi publishes weekly bulle ns and newsle ers for churches throughout the United States. Currently they provide weekly bulle ns to many of the parishes in the Archdiocese. Catholic family-owned since 1972, they offer custom communica on solu ons backed by industry-leading service. One of their strengths is finding local businesses to support those publica ons financially, allowing the church to deliver their message in a cost-effec ve manner.

During the weeks of November 12th & December 17th, John Kirchner from LPi will be working at the St. Raphael parish office contac ng you about this opportunity. If you are interested or want more informa on about sponsoring an ad, please call the parish office that week at 763-537-8401 or John on his cell at 952-210-3135.

As a reminder, we ask that all of our parishioners u lize these wonderful adver sers whenever possible. Please use the bulle n as a resource whenever you are in need of products or services. Please let them know we truly appreciate their loyal support of our weekly bulle n. It is their generosity that provides the weekly bulle n at no cost to our parishes.
