May We be Worthy Followers of Jesus Dear Sisters and Brothers, Jesus gives a great “missionary discourse” in which he instructs his Apostles on the cost and the reward of the commitment required of being a disciple. “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me….” (Mt 10: 37-42). These words of Jesus may sound a bit ex-treme, since family comes first for most of us. Does this mean that Jesus wants us to turn our backs on our parents or to reject them? Certainly not! The fourth commandment explicitly teaches us to honor our fathers and our mothers. When we look at the ways our parents have sacrificed for us we are looking at the finest form of earthly love. So, what does Jesus mean by this command? Je-sus is talking here about a higher form of love than filial love. He is not denigrating family love. Rather he wants us to understand that if we love God first the way Jesus loves us, we will love our families even more. The second command really strikes us as ex-treme. “Whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” How can this be? It is simply that Jesus Christ must be the center of our lives. We love our children because they are not just our children; they are the God’s children. Parents are in the responsibility of raising chil-dren for the Lord, not for themselves. If parents separate their love for their children from their love for the Lord, if the worship of God is not a priority in their home, then these parents would be loving their children more than God. They would be unworthy of being a follower of Christ. But if parents allow the presence of God in their homes to motivate their every action, if parents are committed to raising their children to be the Christian men and women, then their love for their children will reflect their love for the Lord. Their love for their children is an expres-sion of their love for God. Everyone is bound to love his or her parents and family members, but love for family or any creature should never be-come an obstacle to the love of Christ. (Continued in the column to the right) > > > > >

< < < (Continued from the column on the left) And finally, “Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” Christ’s love is sacrificial love. He loves by sacrificial giving. He calls us to love by giv-ing. This can be difficult. This can be a real cross. A person can have a serious ill-ness. Another one might be in so much pain that he or she just wants to give up, even to the point of going to fight with God rather than accept his or her situation in life as a participation in the cross of Christ. If we refuse to follow the Lord because we are convinced that our crosses are too much for us, then we are not worthy of being called disciples of the Lord. Today’s gospel makes it clear that there is a cost to discipleship. We must love our parents, our children, and ourselves, but we should never love them more than the Lord. To love them more than Jesus would be to elevate the creature above the Creator. If we put Christ first in our life, eve-rything else will fall into place. Yours in Christ, Fr. Abraham Kochupurackal CMI

“We often assume parenthood happens easily after ‘I do,’ but for many married couples, it does not. For some, the joy of conception never happens. Others suf-fer repeated miscarriages. Still others experience sec-ondary infertility: after giving birth to one or more chil-dren, they are unable to have another… If you experi-ence difficulty bringing a child into your family, know that you are not alone. God is with you, and his Church desires to walk with you.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Seven Considerations While Navigating Infertility”

For married couples longing for a child: May God grant them the grace and strength to place their faith in His loving plan; We pray to the Lord.

All Wednesday’s of the Month Eucharistic Adoration
