Pentecost Sunday

May 31, 2020

FOCUS: We each receive gifts from the Holy Spirit to

share with others, for the greater good.

Today, as we celebrate the birthday of the Church with

the coming of the Holy Spirit, we also reflect on the gifts

that the Spirit gives to each of us. Let us pray to be able

to recognize them, and ask for the grace to use them for

the sake of the Kingdom.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading recounts

the dramatic coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples—

and their resulting ability to speak in different tongues. In

his Letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul writes that while

there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, there is but the

same Spirit, and the same God. In the Gospel, Jesus ap-

pears to the disciples in a locked room, gives them the

Holy Spirit, and grants them the authority to forgive sins.

REFLECTION: Jesus is no longer physically present

with us, but he has not withdrawn to some distant moun-

tain in the cosmos, waiting for his time to return. The

scriptures today remind us that Jesus is fully with us be-

cause his Spirit dwells in us – as individuals and as a

church community. Empowered by the Spirit we

"proclaim" our faith in Christ by our words and actions.

So we ask ourselves:

How is my faith affected by the presence of the Holy

Spirit in my life?

With the Holy Spirit, how can I be a more public

witness to my faith?

The Pope’s Monthly Intentions

For Deacons

We pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the

Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol

for the entire Church.

Arise: Why Nothing Compares to Receiving the Sacraments in Person

This is a summary of the video by Fr. Dennis Gill, Director of Office of Divine Worship and Rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, printed in the bulletin with permission.

Luke 24: 28-35 Jesus makes himself known to the disciples on the way to Emmaus in the breaking of the bread.

A sacrament is traditionally defined as an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace but Fr. Gill shares with us an ancient defini-tion. A sacrament is a visible sign of an invisible reality. It is not possible to celebrate the sacraments without the tangible, visible

signs and accompanying words of proclamation or consecration. The Risen Lord is present to us in the essential elements of the sac-raments, the water of Baptism and the bread and wine of the Holy Eucharist.

In Baptism we are set free from original sin and become members of the Church, brothers and sisters of our Lord Jesus with the

same Father in heaven with the promise of everlasting life. Although all of this is true, it fails to describe Baptism as a sacrament.

St. Paul’s letter to the Romans (Romans 6:3-4) reminds us that when we are Baptized into Christ, we die and rise with him. We encounter the Risen Lord, the invisible reality, when we are raised up from his death in the water of Baptism, the visible sign of this sacrament.

Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus we encounter the Risen Lord when we celebrate the Holy Eucharist. We bring to every altar what Jesus instituted the night before he died, the visible sign of the invisible reality of his death and Resurrection. As St. Paul

states in his letter to the Corinthians (I Cor. 11:23-26), when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim the death and resurrec-tion of the Lord.

Virtual worship has been helpful during this time however we have not been able to eat and drink of the mystery that saves and re-deems us nor receive the sacramental grace that brings the risen Lord into our lives. Let us return to the pews and come before the

altar with renewed faith and enthusiasm to encounter the Risen Lord in the sacraments so he can reign within us as we receive the grace and strength we need to live the Christian life.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

to tiene tres funciones: a.
