MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
Praise God from whom all blessings flow! The words that come to my mind at this
moment are the words those Hebrew pilgrims voiced as they ascended to the hills
of Jerusalem to worship. These are also the words that come to my mind around
this time every year, which says, “The Lord has done great things for us, where of
we are glad” (Psalms 126:3).
As I reflect on when and where this church started, I am immediately aware of the
fact that God has done great things for us as a body of believers. I am excited about
what God has done, what God is doing, and what God will do. Redeemer continues to be a church that is
in the Word, under the cross, ministering to the world.
I thank God for the founder, Rev. Joseph T. Kirkland and the few that gathered, met in homes, and shared
their meals with great joy and generosity―all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the
people. And each day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved. Acts 2:46-47 (NLT) Look
around and see what God has done.
To the leaders and members of this great church, I am privilege to lead you into the next chapter of our
church legacy. We are a unique church that has come this far by faith, prayers, commitment, fellowship
and hard work.
I also want to thank the 43rd Church Anniversary Committee and its chairperson for their commitment and
hard work in organizing and planning this outstanding celebration. Remember to be not weary in well doing
for it is promised that in due season you will reap if you faint not.
Let us pause and celebrate, as well as, thank God for glorious past, an enriching present, and a bright future.
Again, congratulations on this celebration.

46 And they, continuing daily
with one accord in the temple,
and breaking bread from house to house,
did eat their meat with gladness
and singleness of heart.
47 Praising God,
and having favour with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church daily
such as should be saved.

CHURCH HISTORY
Reverend Joseph T. Kirkland
On Friday, September 30, 1966, a small group of Christians met, marking the beginning of something special
for us. The Church of the Redeemer Baptist was organized; a church that would spiritually, morally, socially,
educationally, economically, and politically, embrace and enrich the lives of humankind. A church that would
inspire man and have an impact that would elevate the community to a higher and nobler realm of living in
this world, and at that time Reverend Joseph T. Kirkland was elected pastor.
The first worship service was held on Sunday, October 2, 1966, at 1903 Federal Street. Services were held at
this location until May 1967, when we were able to share the facilities of Grace UAME Church at 19th and
Annin Streets.
On November 19, 1967, the congregation moved into its present site at 24th and Dickinson Streets. During that
year, the church also acquired a total of seven properties that were renovated, without the aid of government
assistance, for the purpose of helping to improve the community and to provide homes for families in need.
The Church of the Redeemer Baptist soon became known as the “friendly church” because of the warmth and
love everyone felt as they entered the doors. Because of the goodness of God and the steadfast Christian
dedication of the pastor, officers and members, the church grew spiritually, financially and numerically. The
members gave generously from their hearts to provide for the many needed articles for worship. The
membership grew to two hundred and sixty–six in number as well as our financial status. The congregation
continued to grow as Reverend Kirkland provided spiritual enrichment to the community. By the ninth year,
we were able to pay off the debts of the church.
During those years, four more houses were purchased and remodeled. In 1980, the church embarked upon a
project to build a Christian Educational Center to be located on Dickinson Street between the fourteen hundred
block of South Taylor and Ringgold Streets.
On March 22, 1982, the church’s sixteenth anniversary, our beloved pastor, Reverend Joseph T. Kirkland was
called home. We miss his dedicated and cheerful spirit, but we will not forget his dream
Reverend Gilbert G. Campbell, Jr.
In March of 1983, God sent us another shepherd. Reverend Gilbert G. Campbell, Jr. was elected pastor and
proved to be a good faithful leader. He built upon Reverend Joe’s dream to build a Christian Education Center
by having another set of blueprints drawn. Although, the past sixteen years were prosperous, they were
through the fundraising efforts of the membership. Reverend Campbell emphasized that the giving of “tithes”
was the way to support the building of God’s Kingdom. He enforced this position by stopping the fundraisers
and the selling of dinners at the church and called for the membership to tithe more. The church membership
and budget doubled. He implemented the payroll system for those who worked on a continuous basis at the
church. The first Young Adult Choir was organized under his leadership. In 1989, Reverend Campbell was
called to shepherd New Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia.
Reverend Tyrone E. Kilgoe
After a few months, in 1989, Reverend Tyrone E. Kilgoe was elected pastor. He also reinforced the policy of no
fundraisers and encouraged the membership to tithe. New Members Class, Follow-Up Ministry, Fellowship
Choir and the first Women’s Ministry headed by his wife, Sister Dana Kilgoe, were formed under his leadership.
“Faith is not just jumping to conclusions, but concluding to jump”, quoted Reverend Kilgoe. In 1991,
Reverend Kilgoe resigned, the church split and Reverend Kilgoe founded the New Comfort Baptist Church.
On that day in June of 1991, the remaining members were led in a prayer service by “our own” former
Chairman of Deacons, William Nicks, Sr. He spoke from Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd”. In the midst
of all the confusion, he called for those remaining members to stay strong in their faith and God will see us
through.
Reverend Theodore Jones was among the many preachers who fed us. He and Sister Jones endeared
themselves to Redeemer’s heart, until Pastor Wayne E. Croft started as interim pastor.
Reverend Wayne E. Croft, Sr.
God is still with us. There is a balm in Gilead that heals. A healing for your sorrow, spirit and soul, this was
Reverend Wayne E. Croft, Sr., “a little David” on fire of the Lord. After serving one year as interim pastor, in
June of 1993, he was elected pastor. He married the former Dr. Lisa Russell in that same year and is now the
father of three children, Darlene, Wayne, Jr. and Candace Nicole.
Now the membership and budget has quadrupled. The church has grown from one hundred, seventy-seven
(177) members to over one thousand, six-hundred (1,600) on the roll. He also reinforced the policy of no
fundraisers and tithing more to support the work of God’s Kingdom. He implemented the plan of having a set
budget for each ministry. The dream, for the first time, has taken on a visible form all its own. A model of the
building was made from the new blueprints of the multi-purpose Christian Education Center. On May 7, 2000,
we held our groundbreaking service and ceremony. The contractor began work on Tuesday, May 24, 2000.
On Sunday, October 7, 2001, The Church of the Redeemer Baptist celebrated thirty-five years (35) in ministry.
Among our many blessings was the Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the newly erected Redeemer
Christian Life & Education Center. This facility houses the office of Redeemer Renaissance Community
Develop Corporation (RRCDC) founded in November 1999 by Dr. Wayne E. Croft, Sr. It also houses our Day
Care, banquet hall, classrooms, computer labs and now our administrative offices.
Our first Associate Pastor and minister to be ordained here at Redeemer was Rev. John A. Croft, Sr. he later
became the pastor of Fellowship Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Other sons of Redeemer that are
spreading the Good News are Rev. Gregory Holston, pastor of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Trevose,
PA and Rev. Jermaine T. Health, Sr., pastor of St. Paul’s Chapel Baptist Church, Philadelphia, PA, Minister
Carmena Pyfrom, who was the first woman to be licensed to the Gospel ministry here at Redeemer; and all were
licensed and/or ordained by Pastor Croft.
There are over thirty ministries working under the umbrella of God held by Pastor Croft. In the fall of 2001,
The Church of the Redeemer Baptist purchased 3.4 acres of land located at 25th/26th Dickinson and Reed
Streets in order to meet the growing needs of the church and community. On September 18, 2006, the first
class of the Redeemer Institute for Christian Education (RICE) was held.
Through God’s grace and mercy, yesterday brought us to today, and with continued faith, today will
take us to tomorrow.
“It doth not yet appear what we shall be.”
