Remember the prayer in the book of Daniel when the king tried to force three young men to worship him? “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace,

the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

I’ve learned about the power of prayer throughout my life, especially when it comes to the big things. In some miraculous way, God answers our prayers and accomplishes His will.

What is His will for Wesley Manor? The best way I know how to figure that out is to pray. Since God was able to save these men from the fiery furnace, he can certainly meet our own needs. Would you join me in praying for God to accomplish his plan for Wesley Manor?

We recently made some enhancements to our facilities. We’ve added a new roof on Hoskinson House Assisted Living Center, as well as new gutters and long-needed insulation and ventilation in the attic. Our grounds have been improved, our Health Care Center living room refurbished and a screened porch enclosed in the Health Care Center to create a cheerful private dining

room for our more independent nursing residents... We really need to replace our Health Care Center. It is an enormous project but one that is dearly needed. With God, anything is possible.

Let us pray!

“O gracious Heavenly Father, we pray that you will continue to bless Wesley Manor. We recognize you as the King of Kings and the Lord of all. We ask you to continue enriching the lives of our residents and that the quality of their care will continue to improve. Thank you for our staff’s passion to serve and love our residents. We pray for our management team and the Board of Directors as well, and for all of those who have made contributions to our mission in order for us to continue your work. Bless them and continue working in their lives so that we can help many others.

“We ask these things in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who has saved us all from the fire!” Amen

Introducing... Board Member, Russ Wardlaw!

Russ became a member of Wesley Manor’s Board of Directors in the summer of 2011. After many years with the Robert Clarkson Insurance Agency, Russ joined Neace Lukens in 2009 where he currently serves as Senior VP, Profit Center Leader of

Emerging Markets and Marketing Director of their Louisville office.

Russ brings with him a wealth of experience as an insurance underwriter and in the field of workers compensation. Upon joining the independent insurance agency ranks, Russ created and managed several insurance programs for large associations and major U.S. companies and he has many years’ experience in dealing with medium-to-large commercial accounts.

As a graduate of Western Kentucky Univ., Russ’ Kentucky roots run deep. His passion for helping people is also reflected in his board involvement with Spalding University, Court Appointed Special Advisors (CASA) and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He is an active member of Louisville’s Christ Church United Methodist and an avid family man whose hobbies include running, golfing and the outdoors.

Two of our residents recently called me to explore the benefits of establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity (“CGA”) with Wesley Manor. Their goals were to provide

income for the rest of their lives, receive tax benefits and help Wesley Manor fund its senior care ministry into the future.

Wesley Manor partners with the Kentucky United Methodist Foundation to provide gift annuity services to our friends and supporters. After speaking with David Bowles and me, they finalized a CGA with Wesley Manor and are very happy with its benefits.

CGAs have been around for more than 100 years. They are particularly beneficial to seniors who need more reliable income and who, at the same time, would like to support their charity of choice and leave a legacy. Supplying both fixed annual payments and a subsequent gift, a CGA can significantly boost the income of older adults while making it possible for them to give at a more significant level than

they thought possible.

With interest rates on CDs and bank-based savings at historic lows, and the stock market in a state of flux, establishing a CGA can provide significant “paychecks” to those who want to increase their annual income. Current interest rates on CGAs are 4.7% for age 65, 5.8% for age 75 and 7.8% for age 85. Individual rates based on your age can be provided.

If you’d like to learn more about enhancing your income and leaving a deferred legacy gift to Wesley Manor, please contact me at 502-964-3959 or [email protected].

Church Notes Answering God’s Call!

I must have been about 5 years old, but the details of the incident are as fresh as if it were yesterday. My parents had left my older sister, Angela, in charge. I probably got bored because I decided to play a trick on her – I would hide from Angela and she would never find me.

I crouched low behind the large overstuffed chair in our living room and was quiet as a mouse. It wasn’t long until Angela began to look for me. She called my name, but I didn’t answer. I laughed to myself as I pulled my child’s body into a tight, little, invisible ball. Angela kept calling. I remained silent. I could hear her frantically searching our home, but I never said a word.

Finally, her search led her outside and down the street. When the house became silent, it dawned on me that I was alone and I became frightened and I began to cry. If only I had answered...

John 10:27 says: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Every day the voice of the Good Shepherd calls us by name. Calls us to come forth from our hiding places and follow. Don’t be afraid to answer.

Organizations or businesses usually have government agencies watching what they do. This is especially true for organizations serving children or seniors.

Child day care centers, schools, and nursing facilities seem to have the greatest number of eyes watching their operations. The reason for this is simple. When you are in charge of caring for the very young, or the very old, your organization is involved in a very special ministry – a ministry that is scrutinized from many different places.

Wesley Manor is a Continuous Care Retirement Community. We serve independent seniors in our patio homes, those who need slightly more help in Assisted Living, those who have special needs in our Memory Care Center, and residents who need the most hands-on assistance in our Health Care Center.

The patio homes have very little government oversight. Assisted Living is most closely monitored by the DAIL (the Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living). The Memory Care Center and the Health Care Center are monitored by the Kentucky Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also have jurisdiction over these divisions and they survey us via the OIG. The state Fire Marshall, as well as the local fire department, inspect us

to make sure our buildings are safe. The state’s Ombudsman’s Office also has jurisdiction over our Health Care Center. And finally, if there are serious issues with a nursing facility, the state’s Attorney General may send a representative to conduct an official investigation. As an administrator, it does seem at times that the “whole world is watching.”

I might sound like I’m complaining, but I’m really not. While it is true that we are a highly regulated business, this is necessary because of the important work that we do. Some of our residents, because of their physical or mental conditions, cannot be their own advocates. Others need to advocate for good care on their behalf.

Governmental agencies take their advocacy jobs very seriously, as do we! Wesley Manor takes pride in providing a quality, caring environment for those we serve. We strive to do our best, and we expect that others will be checking our work. It’s just part of being in the “business of caring.” May God continue to bless Wesley Manor and those whom we serve.
