Planning Is Under Way for Ohio News Collaborative
Three public media stations in Ohio – WOSU Public Media, ideastream in Cleveland and Cincinnati Public Radio – are starting the planning process to implement a statewide public radio and digital news collabo-rative. Its output made available to all stations could include a website, a radio program, daily newscasts and a daily newsletter. Combined, the three anchor stations have approximately 50 news staffers. Ultimately, the goal is for all of Ohio’s 13 NPR-affiliate stations to be involved, coming together to coordinate editorial resources and an efficient network of local journalists.
As local news organizations across Ohio suffer from layoffs and closures, the statewide news collaborative addresses a significant need. "One of the glaring holes in statewide coverage is rural Ohio,” stated WOSU Public Media general manager Tom Rieland. “We believe this initiative will allow for quality reporting about the special challenges faced by many small towns and the people who live there. There are so many important stories that go unreported across Ohio, because journalism has all but disappeared in many small and even mid-sized communities."
Set to begin in early 2020 ahead of the presidential election, the collaborative will be Ohio’s only daily statewide radio and digital news service and will allow for enhanced news coverage and widespread community engagement.

Debate: Is Parenting Overrated? Tuesday, December 31 | 10am
What shapes us more: our DNA or the way we’re raised? The nature-versus-nurture debate has drawn disagreement for thousands of years, and emerging genetic research indicates that the scale may be tipping away from parenting and toward biology; but not all trust the research. Is parenting, and all the time and resources that go into it, overrated? This special will try to settle the debate, or at least make you think differently.
Debate: Should ‘Medicare for All’ Replace Private Insurance? Wednesday, January 1 | 10am
As the 2020 election approaches, Democrats promise bold changes to the American health care system. One idea championed by many on the progressive left is “Medicare for All,” or a single-payer system, which would do away with private health insurance for most forms of care. Advocates of this plan promise nationalizing health insurance will cut costs by reducing overhead and promote
overall health by giving all Americans access to preventive care.
Their opponents argue “Medicare for All” would force Americans off employer-based plans, reduce incentives for doctors and providers, increase bureaucracy and inefficiencies in the system, and lead to worse care overall – all the while inflating the already swelled federal deficit. Should private health insurance exist? Or is it time for “Medicare for All”?
Embedded: Gaining and Holding Power; a Profile of Mitch McConnell Wednesday, January 1 | 11am
This hour-long special profiles one of the most powerful people in the country: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. This hour-long special takes listeners on a journey, tracing McConnell’s career: from some of his earliest election races, to the huge influence he’s had in blocking campaign finance reform, to blocking a Supreme Court nominee, to his relationship with a most unlikely ally, President Donald Trump.
