It’s a small town tradition for 13 years now.
Since 2002, thousands of Springtown residents have mi-grated downtown every De-cember for Christmas on the Square.
This year’s festive holiday gathering is set for Saturday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
There’s a ton of things to do around the Square.
Shoppers seeking unique gifts have come to the right place.
Scores of vendors will be sprinkled around the Square offering everything from can-dles and jewelry to a slew of other handmade goods like toys, stockings, ornaments, plush animals, critter clothing, spices, leather goods, cook-books, glass mosaics, and ce-ramics.
Kids will find plenty of activi-ties scattered around the Square – including bounce houses and a petting zoo, new this year.
And if you work up a hunger while investigating the large variety of options, you can find plenty to eat.
As usual, a bevy of Christ-mas performances are planned

throughout the day.A concluding festival high-
light is the announcement of Bo-nus Bucks winners at 2 p.m.
That’s when some lucky folks – who are over 18 and present at the drawing – will receive “cash” that can be spent locally
until Feb. 28, 2015.The luckiest person will re-
ceive $300 in Bonus Bucks. One will get $200 and five
people will be presented with $100.
That’s a merry Christmas, in-deed!
Children and parents lined up to talk to jolly St. Nick in a festive building on the Square that kept out the cold.
Vendors sell all things holi-day including wreaths.

Bonus Bucks are back for the holidays
by Natalie GeNtryIt might be “funny money” but
it spends just fine. The 21st Annual Springtown
Chamber of Commerce Bonus Bucks campaign has been on-going since Nov. 10 as part of Christmas on the Square.
Everyone who entered will have a chance to win during the drawing at 2 p.m. Satur-day, Dec. 13, during Christ-mas On The Square in the Tabernacle.
One $300 winner, one $200 winner, and five $100 winners will be awarded those amounts in Bonus Bucks.
This “funny money” can be re-deemed for merchandise at any of the participating merchants in return for items or services just like regular money.
From idea...This campaign is another
way the Chamber of Com-merce encourages people to “Shop Springtown First,” and Springtown businesses have enjoyed its success for the last 20 years.
The idea of “Bonus Bucks” was created by longtime Cham-ber Director Judy Smerud, who passed away in 2005.
She believed that the event would help promote local shop-ping during the Christmas sea-son.
The original notion of award-ing real money drew a lot of in-terest, but there was no way to guarantee that money would be spent at Springtown area busi-nesses.
So the concept of “Bonus Bucks” was born to ensure the money was used locally.
… To realityThis year, more than 45
Springtown area businesses are involved in the program – in-cluding some Azle merchants
who are also Chamber members. While some businesses host
Bonus Bucks boxes which al-low shoppers to register for the program, others simply make a donation to a worthy cause.
Chamber Director Amy Walker said the $25 investment for businesses to participate in the program is well worth it.
“Most of the time businesses more than get their money back from shoppers who come in to register and then stay to buy something else,” she said.
“The program helps pro-mote shopping in Springtown,” Walker continued. “It works.”
Winners must be present to win.
Those lucky people have through February 2015 to use the Bonus Bucks at participat-ing locations to purchase gifts, pay bills, or buy services.
For additional information, call the Chamber office at 817-220-7828.

Email hasn’t taken over the world yet.
Millions of greeting cards are still sent out each holiday sea-son.
Estimates suggest that 85 percent of the United States population, or roughly 250 mil-lion people, mails out greeting cards.
That adds up to billions of cards going through the postal system – and all in a relatively short period of time.
Men and women who hope to send holiday greeting cards must purchase, prepare, and mail the cards early enough so they are received prior to the holiday.
It is never too early to begin greeting card preparation and as-sembly.
The majority of cards are bought in boxed packages or groupings of photo cards.
Gone are the days of hand-picking individual greeting cards for every recipient
This trend toward general-theme cards has streamlined the process and can help senders start their tasks earlier than ever before.
Some people like to take ad-vantage of post-holiday sales to stock up on greeting cards for the following year at a deep dis-count.
This means they can write the cards out at their leisure and then simply toss them into the mail-box at the appropriate time.
Much in the way people begin their holiday shopping or deco-rating right after the Thanksgiv-ing turkey leftovers have been stored away, a good majority of people also begin their greeting card writing after Thanksgiving as well.
Those who want their cards to arrive first will mail them within a few days of Thanksgiving.
When sent domestically, it is safe to assume that cards mailed out up to 2 weeks before Christ-mas will arrive on time.
After that point, you may be risking lateness, particularly for rural delivery addresses unless cards are sent priority.
For those who need to mail

cards internationally, sticking close to the end of November will ensure they arrive in a time-ly manner.
People who want to make a statement and not have their greeting cards get lost in the crowd may intentionally mail them late and lean toward wishing health and prosperity for the New Year, rather than sending a card tied to a specific holiday.
This gives extra time for mail-ing and will set cards apart from the many others.
Photo cards have grown in popularity, and people interested in having a professional photog-rapher shoot their holiday card photos would be wise to make an appointment as early as pos-sible.
Popular photographers often start holiday photo shoots in Oc-tober.
Keep in mind that the photo-graphs can take a while to be processed and arrive.
For those who are on bor-rowed time, taking a photo with a personal camera and having prints made up at a pharmacy or retail store can save time.
It is unlikely that professional
photos taken in December can be printed and mailed and still arrive on time.
Also, be sure to heed copyright laws concerning photographs.
It may be illegal to scan an image from a photographer or photo studio and have prints made without written permis-sion.
Postage is another thing that will have to be considered when mailing out cards.
While many cards fall under the weight and size limits of a regular first class postage stamp, unusually shaped envelopes or heavy greeting cards may cost more.
Rather than have them re-turned, it is a good idea to have at least one card weighed at the post office to ensure the right amount of postage is affixed.
Some cards will be packaged with envelopes that state “Addi-tional postage may be required” right on the box.
Greeting cards are an impor-tant component of the holiday season.
Ensuring they arrive on time requires planning and sending them out with ample time to spare.

Happy Holidays
Time is in short supply during the holiday season.
Between the shopping, cook-ing, baking, and wrapping, there seems to be precious few hours to tackle anything else.
Those who desire an old-fashioned, homemade holiday can still experience all of the seasonal magic by deferring some of the work to local busi-nesses.
DecoratingMuch of the splendor of the
holiday season comes directly from the intricately decorated houses and storefronts.
Twinkling lights and garlands of fresh pine boughs can instant-ly transform any building.
Decorating a home can take an entire day or more, but del-egating the work to a decorating service will provide you with professional-looking results as well as free time to tackle other obligations.
Decorators can work outdoors stringing lights and creating a winter wonderland in a fraction of the time it takes homeowners to decorate their homes.

son be without the sweet treats and inviting smells of freshly

baked goods? The cooler weather is an ide-
al time to turn on the oven and whip up a batch of cookies or cakes with the aroma of pungent cinnamon and nutmeg.
Others would prefer desserts that provide homemade flair without the effort.
Local bakeries experience an upswing in business this time of year as shoppers flock to choose among the pastries, cookies and pies in display cases.
Whether a dessert comes di-rectly from your kitchen or that of a local confectionery shop, chances are guests will enjoy each delectable bite.
If you have a custom-order dessert in mind, consult with the bakery well in advance to ensure your dessert will be available when hosting friends and family.
CateringRoasts and lavish tables are
part of the holiday season, but so are the corporate parties and cocktail events that comprise a
social season.Catering a party is an easy
way to offer guests delicious food with minimal work. Local caterers can provide everything from sit-down dinners to buffet spreads.
Some restaurants that do not normally cater events may of-fer special packages this time of year.
Different customers are vy-ing for the services of cater-ers within a small window of time.
Contract with a preferred ca-terer early on to guarantee you can benefit from their services.
PartiesSocial calendars fill up come
November and December. When hosting a gathering of
coworkers, family or friends, choose local venues for social events so travel to and from the party is easier on guests.
Parties can take place any-where, including movie theaters, bowling alleys, wine stores, and indoor floral nurseries.

No matter what year it is or whatever the mode of trans-portation he chooses, the star of Christmas on the Square is always Santa Claus. In 2009, St. Nicholas arrived in a shiny red fire engine. Through the years, he has also come to Springtown via horseback and in more modern conveyances.
Last year, children sought out this special mailbox that made Santa deliveries.

Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task.
Untangling wires and wrap-ping them around boughs can be nerve-wracking, but lighting a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals.
First, keep in mind that wrap-ping lights around the tree hori-zontally is more work and often doesn’t produce a multi-dimen-sional effect.
Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically.
This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year.
This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots.
Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you be-gin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots.
Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension.
String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal.
Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

classics aboundAttending Christmas on the
Square is a tradition for many – and so is watching holiday clas-sics on television.
Every year, NBC televises the beloved It’s a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed from 1946.
It wouldn’t be Christmas for many without a viewing of the perennial 1965 classic A Charlie Brown Christmas.
And, of course, the cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1965) is vital; for some, so is the live-action ver-sion starring Jim Carrey, The Grinch (2000).
Others won’t miss A Christmas Story (1983) or Miracle on 34th Street (1947) or even the Bill Mur-ray version of Scrooged (1988).
Don’t have a fireplace? Root around and you can find a filmed fireplace on TV, the Yule Log.
