Last week we looked at David’s sin of adultery with Bathsheba. Chapter 12:1-23 where Nathan was sent by God to rebuke David. Later in this story we will see that David committed adultery with the wife of Uriah the Hittite who was one of David’s mighty men. I always like to look at how Nathan used a story to convict David. I imagine Nathan probably a meek and maybe a small man and given the job to convict the King of his sin. He used a story of a rich man taking the only lamb of a poor family to feed guests. David was angry again and the man said he needed to die. Then Nathan told David and he said, “you are the man” and he told David the Lord would not take his life, but did take away David’s sins. There is much more that could be said about David and his life. 2 Samuel 6-12 tells a lot of the story. Bottom line David’s life has some tips for our lives. Please read Psalm 51 a couple of times to see how he dealt with sin. Our bibles have the answer. Psalm 51 (NASB) A Contrite Sinner’s Prayer for Pardon. 51 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lov-ingkindness; According to the greatness of Your com-passion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thor-oughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For [b]I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. 4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You [c]are justi-fied [d]when You speak And [e]blameless when You judge. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You de-sire truth in the [f]innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. 7 [g]Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; [h]Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 [i]Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. 9 Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create [j]in me a clean heart, O God, And renew [k]a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sin-ners will [l]be converted to You. 14 Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteous-ness. 15 O Lord, [m]open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. 16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleasedwithburntoffering.17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. 18 By Your favor do good to Zion; [n]Build the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then You will delight in [o]righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then [p]young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

From the Pastor’s Pen

Zeroing in on the arrival of Christmas makes me stop and think about so many different things; it is almost as if my brain is shooting off into different directions trying to take in all the significant thoughts and meanings of this glorious time. Last week we examined Isaiah’s words about a child being born - the Son who is given (Is. 9:6) as we considered who Jesus is to the Father and who He is to those of us who believe and have placed our faith in Him.

This morning I want to shift gears and jump into the New Testament as we focus on the truth that “The Word . . . Became Flesh!” In John 1, the apostle penned some of the most puzzling, intriguing words found in Scripture when he wrote 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

Even as I contemplate the arrival of the Christ child I must accept that I am taking about the One who eternally was! Before creation Jesus was; He was with God and He is God. This One who came was coming to dwell with-in and among His creation because He is the Creator! This is so difficult for the human mind to grasp. Jesus is not a lesser God or someone who is a little lower than God; no, He is God in the fullest sense of the word. He is eternally, equally, and essentially God. All of creation must acknowledge Him as Creator; especially mankind! He is the source, the giver of life. Every strand of our DNA cries out that “We are divinely made!” We are wonderfully and fearfully made; we are not an accident or a chance occurrence. No, we have been knitted together in our mother’s wombs. Each of us is a wonderfully, uniquely created individual with a specific purpose known in the heart and mind of God.

We live in a dark world, shadowed by sin and yet this One who came to live among us is “the light of men.” He is the One who illuminates our way. When we are lost in the darkness and then see that tiny pinpoint of light, it is Him showing us the way; when we are frightened because of the darkness He is the One who can and will light our way.

John went on the write in verse 14 that “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” In doing this, Jesus became the physical evidence that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).You see, this infant, this baby, this child is the giver AND the gift of love!

Have you received God’s gift of love that is freely offered in Jesus Christ? You can receive this gift offered by God this morning. I encourage you today to listen for His voice and embrace this truth: God loves you and has a plan for your life. This plan will begin to unfold when you come to Him through His Son Jesus Christ and if you do that you will . . . Be Blessed!

Under His wing, Pastor Tim
