He has worked as an Assistant to the Editor for the Anchor Bible Dictionary (Doubleday 1992), edit-ing some 450 articles on archaeology and histori-cal geography that appear in the six-volume pub-lication. He also has several articles in the dictio-nary, as well as articles in the Oxford Encyclope-dia of Archaeology in the Near East (Oxford, 1997), the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Archaeology (2013), the Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible (Eerdmans 2000), and the New Inter-preters’ Dictionary of the Bible (Abingdon 2008-2009). He has written the introductions for the historical books in the Old Testament Intro-duction for College Press (2005), as well as a chapter on the relationship of archaeology to the Bible. In addition, he wrote the chapter on Ruth in

the Zondervan Illustrated Biblical Background Commentary on the Old Testament (Grand Rapids, 2009) notes of which also appear in the NIV and NKJV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bibles (Zonder-van, 2016 and 2017 respectively). He currently is working on the second major volume of the exca-vations of the work at Tel Beth-shemesh to be pub-lished by the Institute of Archaeology at the Tel Aviv University.

After a generous donation from Linda Byrd Smith of Little Rock, Manor has put together the Linda Byrd Smith Museum of Biblical Archaeology on the campus of Harding. The museum opened in April 2017 and has already received hundreds of visitors. The Democrat Gazette Three Rivers Edi-tion devoted a feature article about him and the museum in their Sunday, June 25 edition.

Suggested Good Work Send a card or handwritten note to someone.

Genesis: Paradise Lost November 13,

Dealing with the Devil “Beloved, whenever there is a question between me and the devil as to whether I am a child of God, I have given up seeking evidence in my own favor or turning to my experience to prove that I am in a state of grace, for that cunning old lawyer knows more about my infirmities than I do and can very soon bring two to one against me. My constant way is to tell the accuser, ‘Well, if I am not a saint, I am a sinner and Jesus came into the world to save sinners, therefore I will go to Christ and look to Him again.’ The devil cannot answer that.” –C. H. Spurgeon

Beethoven, Music and God From Creation Moments

“While Bach wrote theological notes in the margins of his manuscripts, and his well-thumbed Bible also contained comments, Ludwig van Beethoven’s music is honest in its skepticism. There is power and passion in it, as well as a great deal of anger.

“Beethoven rarely wrote church music, but, when he did, he gave it everything. His own as-sessment of his work suggests that he considered his Mass in D Minor (the Missa Solemnis) to be his greatest work. Following the liturgy of a Roman Catholic mass, in five sections, the work concludes with Agnus Dei—a liturgical prayer, sometimes used in certain Protestant churches. For example, the Church of England Prayer Book has this prayer, translated thus:

“O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

“O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

“In this section, Beethoven keeps repeating the word mis-erere (“have mercy”) over and over again, as if he is saying he is unable to find mercy. After this, the music suddenly breaks into an angry fugue.

“Beethoven spent much of his life in anger. He was angry with God for his various infirmities, especially his deafness, which was total by the time of the premier of Missa Solemnis.

“We praise God for creative ge-niuses like Beethoven. Unlike the man himself, we give Him all the honor and glory, for the mercy He has shown us.”

Seminar Flyer This week we should have our flyer for the seminar. This semi-nar will be perfect for someone who needs to see how archae-ology and the Bible speak the same thing, showing that the Bible speaks the truth. Invite your friends!
