First Samuel 2.3

6:00 Service:

From God to Man: How We Got Our English Bible – Part 2

“Whoever humbles himself…” (Matthew 18:4).

Forget who is greatest in the kingdom of Jesus. Minus humility, no one sets foot in the door (Mt. 5:3).

What is humility, besides one of the most difficult words to define? We know humility when we see it. We know its antithesis – pride – when we see it.

But what is humility, precisely?

Confucius said humility is “the foundation of all virtues.” Said Desiderius Erasmus: “humility is truth.” Frank Lloyd Wright made this interesting observation: “I feel coming on a strange disease – humility.”

Humility: a strange disease.

Indeed.

We have no problem identifying arrogance or humility when we see them. Our problem is identifying arrogance when we practice it.

We suppose humility a social grace – a mere matter of manners. Yet, biblical humility does not follow social etiquette:

Humility chased money changers out of the Temple with a whip. Humility called hypocritical Jewish leaders a brood of vipers.

Humility – in a word – is surrender.

It is above mere social etiquette. It is beyond cultural norms. It different from the world’s expectations.

Earthlings revel in strength and confidence in meaningless pursuits. But we are cowards in the things that matter most.

Humility bows to the proper deity. But we will have no god. So we whittle away, till God looks more like us.

“You thought I was just like you” (Psalm 50:21). Humility – in a word – is surrender.

This Month’s Chimala Mission Question

Q: Why is the old farm on the mountain behind the mission called Ailsa?

A: The first time I heard the word Ailsa, I just assumed it was a name native to that part of Tanzania. In my earlier trips to teach at Chimala I heard about this “old mission” up on the mountain at the edge of an escarp-ment overlooking the eastern Rift Valley. It was for-merly a German pig farm that was handed over to the British as part of the Armistice agreement that ended World War I. British Major James Cormack acquired the farm and eventually sold it to Eldred Echols and Guy Caskey who, as I understand, eventually deeded it over to the church. For years it continued as a Bible school and home for missionaries. In the early 70’s, however, it was abandoned leaving it vulnerable to the local Wangi people some of whom plundered the buildings of anything of value.

How the location became known as Ailsa is an in-teresting story. Growing up in Scotland, James Cor-

mack was familiar with the islands situated between Ireland and Scotland in the Irish Sea. Unique to these islands is found a particular granite stone from which curling stones are made. One of these rare and rug-ged uninhabited islands is called Ailsa Craig.

When Cormack lived in Tanganyika (former name of Tanzania), he would often travel north away from the mountains and into the vast Usangu Plain which was then teaming with all sorts and sizes of African wildlife. He might be gone for days hunting wild game for food or, as his son David did professionally, serve as a scout and escort for hunters. On the return trips, Cormack was able to see his way home by identifying the mountains back to the south, particularly the farm which he nicknamed “Ailsa” as it reminded him of that striking island near his homeland of Scotland. Techni-cally, the area is called Kikekelo by the native Wangi people; but the name Ailsa has stuck with the mission-aries and some local people.

Also we had about 8 students baptized on the very day of graduation.

Dear brother Howell, this service is an important work adding to church growth in Tanzania to the point of now the church having strong and coura-geous youth who will result positive Christian church members and future leaders in Christ's kingdom.

Do You Know How to Use Knowledge?

The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. – Proverbs 15.2

Just because we have the ability to speak and just because we know some things, does not mean that we know how to use that knowl-edge. Using knowledge in the best way comes from having wisdom, whereas, if we lack wis-dom, we will speak as fools and what comes out of our mouths will be foolishness. Therefore, we should pursue wisdom. Wisdom comes from daily meditation in the Scriptures, includ-ing in the Book of Proverbs as well, praying, as-sociating with wise people, and learning from our daily experiences, which includes learning from our mistakes.

GW Thought Government Should Promote Religion “And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and be-seech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions…to render our national govern-ment a blessing to all the People, by constantly

being a government of wise, just and constitu-tional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed…and to bless them with good gov-ernment, peace, and concord, to promote the knowledge and practice of the true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.” – George Washington

Difference Between Complaining and Thank-fulness “We do not complain about what God does not give us; rather we are thankful for what God does give us daily.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Wisdom Prayer (James 1.5–6) God of all wisdom, I lack wisdom, but I ask you to grant to me the wisdom that I need daily, be-cause you are the storehouse of all wisdom, and I ask in fullness of faith, believing that you will give me the wisdom I need in abundance. May my life then show that my wisdom comes from you that you may receive the glory. In the name of your blessed Son, I pray. Amen!
