On Wednesday 7 May, the 67th Annual General Meeting of Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club was held. At the meeting, the results of the Board election were announced and subsequent to the AGM, a Board meeting was held to elect office bearers. I am pleased to announce the Board of Directors for 2013-2015 are as follows:

President Neville Brown

Senior Vice President Robert John Crowhurst

Junior Vice President Michelle Boon

Director Neville Rose

Director Steve Baker

Director Malcolm Tyler

Director Mark McIntyre

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Management, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our retiring Senior Vice President, Archie White who for many decades has been intrinsically involved in the Club, Sub-Branch and Sub-Clubs. On a personal note, I would like to thank Archie for the wisdom and guidance he has graciously provided me in my time at the Club. We are honoured to have worked with you, farewell and we know we’ll be seeing you soon.

On another note, there may be a few interruptions to the Club facilities over the coming months, as we move headlong into Phase II of our Master Plan developments. Please see page 9 for more details.

Every year businesses with over 100 employees are required to lodge a report with Australian Government statutory Authority, Workplace Gender Equity Agency (WGEA). If you are interested in viewing our Workplace Profile for 2012-2013, a copy is now available at Reception.

With so much going on over the winter months, we hope to see you enjoy one of our many events and performances, promotions, meals or other activities soon.

Dean Thomas Chief Executive Officer

CEO’s ReportWelcome to the winter edition of Chevron!

As the chilly months are here for a while yet, we can look forward to some great things happening at our Club.

2013 has already been a very busy year and as an RSL Club the most important date on our calendar is ANZAC Day and this

year was no exception. The memorable Member’s ANZAC Cabaret & Dinner Dance held over two fantastic evenings was well attended by hundreds of Members and their guests. Commemoration Sunday and ANZAC Day were all respectfully attended.

We have a special encore performance by Dance Pop Diva, Multi-Platinum recording artist and world-class performer Taylor Dayne on Thursday, 6 June. Other great events and performers not to be missed include Tom Burlinson in ‘Frank, a Life in Song’, the musical Happy Days, The Angels, Hot August Night with Peter Byrne and the spectacular 30 piece Sydney International Orchestra and Elvis to the Max Orchestral Sessions with a 15 piece orchestra.

For something a little different why not join us on Friday, 28 June for a special Australia vs New Zealand Wine Appreciation Evening. These evenings have become very popular so book early to avoid missing out.

If you haven’t had the chance to enjoy our great value Member Meal Deals in the Viva Bar & Grill, now is a good time to try meals on offer including the new mouth-watering Braised Beef Cheeks.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you once again for your support and we look forward to seeing you at our Club.

On the morning of 15 August 1945, just days after the US dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the Emperor of Japan announced that Japan would accept the Allies ultimatum to surrender; World War II was over.

On the same day just after 9am, the then President Ben Chifley’s voice was heard over the radio throughout the nation announcing that Japan had bowed to the ultimatum issued by the Allies and that peace was at hand.

After 6 years and nearly 34,000 Australian lives lost, the formal surrender of the Japanese Empire took place on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.

Ceremonies commemorating what has become known as VP Day are still held at RSL Clubs throughout Australia. Canterbury Hurlstone Park will be holding a ceremony this year on Thursday, 15 August commencing at 7am.

Victory

Celebrations and rallies throughout the main streets of almost every city and town across Australia were heard as outpourings of happiness spontaneously erupted, by evening these were the most jubilant crowds ever to have assembled in Australia.

After a long and distinguished career with Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL, we bid farewell to Archie White as he heads into retirement from Club duties.

Since joining Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL in June 1956, he has been awarded the esteemed position of Life Member of the Club and of the Sub-Branch, and has undoubtedly been one of our longest serving and most committed Members.

Archie is not only a long-term resident of Canterbury, he has lived in the same house in Howard Street since birth. He served with the RAAF in the latter stages of World War II and his father was a veteran from Gallipoli.

Archie served tirelessly on the Board of Directors since being elected on 2 April 1996; firstly as Treasurer, then Junior Vice President, and finally as Senior Vice President.

He has also been very involved with the Sub-Branch, initially as Secretary and ultimately, Trustee.

For many years Archie has served on the Audit and Compliance Committee for the Board and is still an enthusiastic patron of the Golf Sub-Club.

Since the Club acquired Bargo Sports Club as an extension of our CHPRSL family, Archie and his own family have attended ANZAC celebrations every year in Bargo in the Southern Highlands.

All of these contributions, commitment and countless hours of service have been on a voluntary basis – with nothing expected in return. Our gratitude goes beyond words.

It is with mixed feelings that we bid farewell, yet look forward to seeing him around the Club very soon.

Master Planyour club

Phase II of the Master Plan is now well underway with demolition work having commenced for the new outdoor expansion. Around the end of June construction will begin inside the Club. We have developed a plan with the aim to minimise disruptions to the Club and existing activities.

During this time the TAB will be temporarily relocated from late August until it returns to its brand new facility in November. Many of our members will remember the TAB moving temporarily a few times. We would like to assure all our TAB goers that this measure is temporary with the resulting new space being well worth the wait.

One challenge throughout the ensuing months will be the reduction of lounge space which will regrettably affect our lounge entertainment offer. We are however looking at this period as an opportunity for Members and guests to try something different in other areas of the Club.

Meanwhile, Members are encouraged to come and experience the buzz, and see the progress as we take another large step towards achieving the Club’s Master Plan goals of providing our Members with new and exciting facilities.

We appreciate your patience while construction is underway to improve your Club facilities.

Our investment in

WHAT IS PROBLEM GAMBLING?

Problem gambling occurs when a person has difficulty in limiting the money or time they spend on gambling. Problem gambling may mean that the person does not have enough money for essential living expenses or that they are taking work time off to gamble. There is no amount of expenditure or time that defines problem gambling. Some people can afford to gamble more, others need to be more careful. Problem gambling can affect family members and cause harm in many areas of a person’s life.

Gambling is a form of entertainment, not a way to get rich or pay bills. As such, our Club encourages patrons not to gamble more than they can afford.

OUR COMMITMENT

Your Club is committed to providing the best and safest environment for Members and guests, and has been a member of the BetSafe responsible gambling program for over 15 years, well before the NSW Government’s 2001 legislative requirements. As an industry leader, CHPRSL continues to take necessary action to ensure that our gaming environment is the safest and most enjoyable entertainment experience for those patrons who choose to play or poker machines.

Being a proud founding member of the BetSafe, CHP RSL continues to provide a comprehensive service to problem gamblers, and their family members; to assist in dealing with issues that may result from problem gambling.

DOES THIS STORy SOUND fAMILIAR TO yOU?

Do you have a family member who has a gambling problem? Are you unable to pay your rent, mortgage, bills, etc? There are a number of assistance options available to you including problem gambling counselling, couples counselling, financial counselling, legal advice and exclusion.

Please contact BetSafe’s 24 hour counselling hotline on 1800 BETSAFE (1800 238 723) to discuss ways in which they are able to assist you or a loved one.

SAFEGAMBLING

CASE STUDy

BetSafe were contacted by a lady who indicated that her husband was gambling away his entire pay which was creating difficulty for them in paying their mortgage and bills. An appointment was arranged for the following day for a BetSafe counsellor to meet with the lady to discuss the help that was available to her and her family.

The lady indicated that her husband has been withdrawing up to the $800 limit on his debit card in order to finance his gambling. She was able to provide bank statements to demonstrate this, along with documentation showing that they are in danger of having their mortgage foreclosed by the bank.

Although the lady’s husband had previously admitted to her that he had a gambling problem he had become very defensive and secretive of late and refused to get help despite the financial problems that were resulting from his gambling.

As a result of the evidence provided by the lady, which was able to demonstrate that her husband’s gambling problem was causing harm to him and his family, BetSafe were able to assist the her in having her husband excluded from gambling at the Club.

our club youth

Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Youth Club has been a special place for children and teenagers of the Canterbury area for over 50 years. Ester Kitching fondly remembers taking her six year old daughter, Kathy, to her first Tap Dancing lesson just before Christmas in 1958.

In March 1958 the Sub-Branch committee formed a Youth Club for children of Sub-Branch members. Activities for boys and girls were mostly held in the Club and included boxing, tennis, cricket, swimming, dance and gymnastics.

Esther designed the white pleated uniforms worn by the girls in the early years and laughs as she recalls making the children’s costumes out of curtain material, having a budget of only $1 per child! Esther also recalls the Youth Club’s first dance teachers Betty Courtly and Nance Toope whose husband Mick often played the piano while the children danced.

More recently, gymnastics and boys hip hop has become more popular as the Youth Club membership continues to increase. Today more than 200 Youth Club Members ranging in ages from 4 to 24, participate in dance and gymnastics activities taught by teachers and former Youth Club Members, Gai Carden and Andrew Bower.

Students form new friendships and develop a team spirit while also participating in community and RSL events, including the New Zealand Reciprocal Tour, ANZAC Day March, Commemoration Sunday, Nursing Home visits and displays, Red Shield Appeal and Father Riley’s Youth off the Streets fundraisers.

Over the years students have very successfully participated in Dance Eisteddfods and Gymnastics competitions. Planning is currently underway for a tour to the USA in 2014. Many students are very excited and busy fundraising. The tour is open to all ages and will include a performance at Disneyland and a show in New York.

If you are interested in bringing your children or grandchildren to participate in Youth Club activities, new members are always welcome. Further information can be found on CHP RSL Club Website –sub clubs or http://chprslyouthclub.wix.com/chprslyouthclub
