특히 문화적 외교가 매우 중요한 역할을 하는 미국의 수도 워싱턴 D.C.에서 한국 여성들의 다양한 경험을 예술로 표현한 작품을 선보이는 것을 자랑스럽게 생각합니다. 이번 미술전시회는 워싱턴 D.C. 일원 미주류사회에 한국문화를 알리고 공유하는 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다. 한국여성들이 각자 서로 다른 환경에서 어려움을 극복하고, 자아를 찾는 과정을 담은 예술 작품들은 관객들에게 한국여성 예술가들의 무한한 잠재력과 가능성을 전달 할 것입니다.

It is my great pleasure to welcomeeveryone to the Korea Women’s International Network Conference here in the Washington, D.C. area and to con-gratulate the KOWIN organization as a whole on their history of great work advancing and recognizing the accomplishments of women of Korean heritage across the United States.

As director of the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C., I am particularly delighted and proud to see the realization of the international Korean women’s art exhibition, Chosen Homeland: Searching for Women’s Identity and Unity. Cultural diplomacy in all its forms is an important priority for us here in the U.S. Capital, and it is especially good to see a focus on women’s experiences as expressed through the arts. This exhibition not only explores what it means to have Korean heritage, but also what it means to overcome challenges and find oneself in the process – a universal lesson which all people can and should appreciate.

I would like to particularly thank the KOWIN leadership for the meaningful work they have done over the years. The organization has grown into a valuable institution that benefits and is a source of pride for Korea and countries all over the world. I look forward to many more years of great accomplish-ments by KOWIN members as they continue to positively shape and guide our communities.

Dear Art-lover friends;

It is my pleasure to welcome you to "Chosen Homeland: Searching for Women's Identity & Unity," an art exhibition of female Korean artists from around the world. Many of these artists have successfully established themselves as career artists while managing to be a citizen, daughter, wife and/or mother in their respective communities. A juried competition was held to choose in preparation for the exhibition. It was a great challenge for the jurors to select only three awardees out of such an outstanding pool of artists. I thank chief juror, Professor Muhn, for his expertise and support for this competition.

This beautiful event is a result of each artist and their ability to communicate through different mediums. I would like to express my sincere appre-ciation to the program chair, Dr. Okim for her tireless energy and pursuit of perfection in producing this wonderful event and the KOWINNER convention fellow Ms. KangEun Jeong Olson. Finally, my thanks go to Dr. Byung Goo Choi, director of the Korean Cultural Center, Washington DC for his support and encouragement.

전세계에서 활동하고 있는 한국계 여성 미술가들의 전시회를 코위너 국제대회 행사의 일환으로 성공적으로 개최하게 된것에 깊이 감사합니다. 여기 전시된 작품들을 창작하신 한분 한분은 새로운 땅에서 딸로서, 아내로서, 어머니로서 새로운 삶을 개척해 나가면서 각자의 거주 지역에서 성공적으로 예술가로 활동하시고 계십니다. 작가 여러분께 진심으로 축하의 말씀을 전하고 싶습니다. 그리고 이 전시회를 위해서 적극적으로 협조해 주셔서 감사합니다.

또한 이번 행사의 일환으로 한국계 여성 미술대학 및 대학원 학생들을 대상으로한 공모전을 개최, 세명의 유망한 비쥬얼 아티스트를 발굴하게 되었습니다. 앞으로 이분들의 활약을 지켜봐 주시고 격려해 주시기를 바랍니다. 이번 수상자 선정 과정에서 심사위원장을 맡아 수고하신 문범강 교수님께 진심으로 감사 드립니다.

저는 지금 이 아름다운 작품들을 보면서 한점의 작품을 완성하기 위해서 작가분들이 얼마나 힘든 작업을 하셨는지 새삼 느껴집니다. 여러 작가 분들께 다시 한번 찬사를 보냅니다.

[ Juror’s Commentary ]

This art competition sponsored by the Korean Women’s International Foundation (KOWINNER) is open to ethnically Korean female artists of any cur-rent nationality who are enrolled in a college anywhere in the world.

There are countless art competitions in the world; however, not many exist for college art students, let alone for art students with a Korean heritage. For that reason this event can encourage many young Korean female artists to have their talents recognized and give an opportunity for them to have their work shown with other professional female artists from all over the world in the gallery of the Korean Cultural Center Washington DC at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, also known as KORUS HouseCenter in Washington, DC.

It was not an easy task for the three jurors to select the winners for this competition since we were presented with many artworks in various mediums, many of which had striking and exceptional qualities.

I sincerely hope that this year’s art competition by KOWINNER is the first of many more to come to establish an ongoing tradition.

세계 한민족 여성 네트 워크(KOWINNER)가 주최하는 이 미술공모전은 세계 각지에서 미술을 전공하는 한국계 출신의 여학생들이 작품을 출품하여 기량을 겨루는 국제전의 성격을 띄고 있습니다. 입상작품은 세계 여러나라의 기성 한인 여성작가들의 작품과 함께 워싱턴 한국문화원에서 개최되는 전시에 초대되는 영광을 동시에 안게 됩니다.

많은 미술공모전이 세계 여러 곳에서 수 없이 진행되고 있지만 미술학도들이 응모할 국제적 성격을 띈 공모전은 그리 많지 않습니다. 그러기에 KOWINNER에서 한국계 여성 학생 창작가들에게 이러한 기회를 부여한다는 것은 젊은 여성 창작가들에게 힘을 실어주는 무척 소중하면서 미래지향의 상징적 의의가 크다고 보여집니다.

이번 공모전에 출품된 작품들은 회화와 설치작품 등 다양한 장르와 주제로 입상작의 우열을 가리기가 쉽지 않았습니다. 심사위원들의 작품선정 과정은 응모자들이 아직 미술 학도이지만 나름대로 개성이 강한 작품에 보다 많은 점수를 주게 되었음을 알립니다.

앞으로 이 공모전이 더 활성화되고 지속적으로 운영되어 많은 한인 여성 창작가들에게 작품 발표 기회를 부여하는 전통을 지닌 전시회로 성장하길 바랍니다.

I am thrilled and honored to receive the first prize of 2015 KOWINNER International Art Competition. I most graciously thank the selection and organizing committee members Professor BG Muhn, Professor Emeritus Komelia-HongjaOkim and Dr. Myong Ho Lucy Nam for allowing me to be a part of KOWINNER's Chosen Homeland: Searching for Woman's Identity and Unity exhibition.

I am humbled and extremely grateful to be exhibit-ing my work at the Korean Cultural Center with so many esteemed professional women artists. This opportunity is sure to remain a great experience and encouragement as I move forward with my art practice.

Lastly, I would like to thank my family, friends, profes-sors and mentors for their continued, unwavering support, and my SMFA community for helping me grow immensely by persistently motivating me to develop my critical thinking and sense of experimentation.

[ Winners' Impressions ]

I am very honored to be the second place winner in this KOWINNER art competition and to receive recognition from its Selecting Committee. Since KOWINNER is dedicated to supporting Korean women in pursuit of leadership roles and in personal development, this award is especially meaningful to me.

Through this experience and exhibition, I hope to inspire other Korean women to pursue their goals, and promote a supportive network that can help our community grow and be successful. After taking a long hiatus from my art career to focus on my family and children, I returned to school to continue pursuing my artistic aspirations. I believe that orga-nizations like KOWINNER are an integral part of that process. KOWINNER offers a body of support to women like me who still have ambitions to chase and goals to achieve.

It is a wonderful honor to have received the recognition of KOWIN for my artwork. Art is my life’s passion and it feels so great to be able to share the artwork that I have invested so much care and time into with others. I am so grateful for this opportunity.

I also want to deeply thank my family and friends for always supporting my pursuit of the arts. Their encour-agement has been invaluable and uplifting throughout my artistic practice. I hope that sharing my artwork through KOWIN alongside other Korean women artists can be a way to reciprocate my appreciation of their endless love and support.

Reflective Equilibrium: No. 7, 2013Oil on canvas48" x 36"

Julia Kwon was born in Northern Virginia and studied studio art with a concentration in painting at Georgetown University. She is currently a MFA candidate at Tufts Univer-sity–School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She paints to continually challenge her perception and actively reflect upon what is vital in life. She has been selected for the Integrative Arts Fellowship of the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholar-ship and received awards for Lepgold Phi Beta Kappa, GU Outstanding Senior Project in Studio Art, and American Association of University Women’s poster competition: Celebrating Women’s Voice in Politics and Art.

Artist statement:

Painting, to me, is the struggle to better understand myself, the world I live in, and what it means to live fully and justly. My paintings engage me not only visually, but also introspectively. Reflective Equilibrium was inspired by the philosophical concept of the same name: coined by philosopher John Rawls, reflective equilibrium is the state of having to continually and diligently challenge and adjust oneself to attain an ideal balance among one’s conflicting moral beliefs. I began the series with images that capture this ethical mission such as traditional Korean folk art of fish, for the fact that a fish never closes its eyes sym-bolized absolute vigilance against immorality. Though I started by borrowing the colors and contours from folk art and fish locomotion, the paintings eventually evolved and what ulti-mately remains on canvas is my representation of the restless commitment to ethics, growth and progress.

작품 활동은 나에게 시각적 영감뿐만 아니라 자아 성찰의 기회를 준다. Re-flective Equilibrium은 철학자 존 롤스가 창시한 개념인 “반성적 평형”에서 영감을 받았다. 반성적 평형은 의견 불일치가 생길 때마다 지속해서 자신의 견해들을 재고하고 수정하여 여러 도덕적 신념들 사이의 이상적인 균형 즉 의견 일치를 달성하기 위해 꾸준히 사색하고 성찰하는 상태이다. 나는 반성적 평형의 윤리적 사명을 표현하기 위해 한국 전통 민화 특히 어해도의 색상과 형태들을 빌려 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 한시도 눈을 감지 않는 물고기가 부도덕에 대한 절대적인 경계를 상징하였다는 사실 때문이다. 비록 한국 어해도와 물고기의 움직임을 본떠 그리기 시작했지만, 궁극적으로 화폭에 남아있는 것은 나의 이상적 균형을 찾기 위해 수많은 변형을 겪은, 윤리와 성장을 위한 노력을 보여준다.

Artist statement:

My work is a reflection of the harmonizing of contradictory elements. I like to push the artistic boundaries with different, seemingly opposing, components. This is revealed in the topics I explore, such as natural vs. synthetic or literal vs. imaginary. I use mundane objects and materials to explore what is possi-ble and trust my intuition to guide the painting. I don’t begin with a final outcome in mind, but allow the process to progress freely as an image emerges. To construct a painting, I focus on integrating each aspect cohesively and on how the individual elements interact in the spatial composition.

서로 어울리지 않을것 같은 재료나 상황들을 택하여 작품속에서 조화를 이루고자 하였다. 작품의 끝보다는 과정에 더 관심을 두고필요한 모든 요소들이 서로 상호간에 작용하여 다음 단계에 이르도록 노력하였다.

- Zoe Linn Soo-Hee Jarvis was born in 1993 in Seoul, Korea. Jarvis lives in Baltimore, Maryland and is earning a BFA in Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her artistic endeavors are reinforced by strong academic achievement in her classes at MICA. Jarvis is a recipient of the Thalheimer Scholarship and the MICA Trustee Award Scholarship and has qualified for the MICA Dean’s List every year. In addition, Jarvis works part-time as a life model for painting and drawing classes at MICA and inde-pendently continues her pursuit of sixteen years as a classical pianist. As a passionate and driven artist, student, and musician, Jarvis emphasizes the importance of a strong work ethic to fuel progress in her various professional and personal practices.

Artist statement:

Nature is a source of solace and a reminder of individual strength. My drawings present nature in the form of abundant flower blooms, rendered exclusively in Prismacolor colored pencils and spread across large sheets of paper. The flowers are repeated in varying sizes and from differing vantage points until the myriad flowers begin to exist together.

The drawings are built-up and discovered over time, some-what unpredictably. Small crosshatched areas begin in a local-ized region on the paper and are replicated, expanding in all directions from the point of origin. These drawings motivate the creation of themselves. My drawings embody how family and nature have impacted my life.

[ Message from KOWIN DC Art Director ]

In conjunction with the 2015 KOWINNER International Convention, it was my special pleasure to organize this exhibition entitled “CHOSEN HOME-LAND: SEARCHING FOR WOMEN’S IDENTITY & UNITY” at the Korean Cultural Center, Washington D.C.

As I undertook this project, I have realized the importance of searching the identity and unity of Korean women from around the world. The participat-ing artists are working toward their goals as women artists whether they are from Korea or other chosen home countries. They are searching for their new national and cultural identities as they carry out various tasks and roles as artists, as wives and/or mothers. As a whole, these artists are trying to discover a unified harmony and a sense of purpose in their professional careers.

Although there are some similarities and differences in their educational and individual backgrounds, their artworks symbolically reflect and reveal the Korean cultural traditions and heritages. It is interesting to note how each artist expresses differently through diverse media, colors, and aesthetics. I am sure all viewers will enjoy looking at the different styles and methods utilized by the Korean women artists from all over the world.

In closing, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Myung Ho (Lucy) Nam, Conference Chairwoman; Professor BG Muhn, Chief Curator of the Student Art Competition; and Ms. KangEun Jeong Olson, KOWINNER Fellow for their contribution and dedication to have made this special exhibition possible. 워싱턴 DC 한국문화원에서 코위너 국제 컨벤션의 특별전시로 '선택된 고향: 여성의 정체성과 통일성을 찾아서' 의 주제로 개최되는 전시의 진행을 맡게되어 큰 영광이었습니다.

저는 이 행사를 주관하며 여성의 정체성과 세계각지의 한국여성들의 통일성을 모색함에 대한 중요성을 재인식하게 되었습니다. 참여 작가들은 그들이 한국이든 다른 선택한 나라에서든 여성 작가로서 활발히 활동하고 있으며, 작가로서, 아내로서 또는 어머니로서의 그들의 새로운 국가적, 문화적 정체성을 찾아가고 있으며, 또 조화를 모색하고 있다고 생각합니다.

비록 작가들의 교육 및 개인의 배경이 비슷하거나 혹은 다르지만, 그들의 작품에는 한국의 문화적 전통과 유산이 명백히 드러나고 반영되어 있습니다. 저는 본 전시회의 관객들이 다양한 재료, 색, 미학적 견해를 통해 각기 다르게 표현하고 있는 세계각국에서 참여한 한국 여류작가들의 작품들에 매료될것이라고 믿습니다.

마지막으로 특별전을 위해 노고와 헌신을 다해주신 코위너 국제컨벤션 준비위원장 남명호박사, 대학생 미술공모전의 심사를 담당한 문범강 교수, 그리고 코위너의 펠로우 정강은씨께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 아울러 최병구 한국문화원장의 아낌없는 후원과 격려 및 협조에 깊이 감사드립니다.

Bang Hai Ja was born in Seoul, 1937 and live in France since 1961.Bang Hai Ja’s painting constantly offers us new views of the universe.Her painting is primarily a look at the cosmos that admires the universe andhelps us to admire its multiple beauties (…) The art of Bang Hai Ja is neither an adventure nor a feat, but a quest.Her painting, which vibrates with an intense poetry, is a living, independent organism which produces radiant light effects.Smoothness, softness and spirituality are the words which qualify best this work, reflection of the heart of this unique artist.Bang Hai Ja does not paint nature but space, signs, marks, streaks, cries, which become by a sort of visionary magic splashes of light, star tremors, seismograms of calls, of distant sounds. The suggestions and vibrations of an imagined cosmos. Emotion crystallizes in them, opens a pathway to infinity.Bang Hai Ja had over 80 personal exhibitions and took part in many collectiveexhibitions.

하나의 점을 그릴 때 생명의 씨앗을 땅에 심는 마음으로, 하나의 원을 그릴 때 무한한 우주와 하나되는 마음으로, 한 빛을 그릴 때 온 세상에 사랑과 평화를 드리는 마음으로, 그리하여 빛의 입자들이 보는 사람들의 영혼까지 스며들어 찬란한 빛 속에 온 몸을 담글 수 있는, 그러한 마음의 그림을 그리고 싶습니다.

“I was born and raised on a small farm in Korea. As a child, I was fascinated by nature, especially birds. I would observe them for hours and was particularly intrigued by their feathers. I began to gather feathers to draw and paint. The feathers represented my wonders about the places I had never been, things I never knew, and things I never have seen. Gathering and painting feathers was my way of keeping a journal.”

“나는 한국의 작은 농가에서 태어나고 컸다. 어릴때 나는 자연 특히 새에 매료 되었었다. 시간가는 줄모르고 새를 관찰 했으며, 특히 깃털에 매혹 됐었다. 깃털을 모아서 그리고 색칠도 했다. 깃털은 내게 미지의 장소, 모르는 것들, 보지 못했던 것 들에 대한 나의 경이감의 상징 이라고 할 수 있다. 깃털을 모으고, 그리는 것은 내게는 일기를 쓰는 것과 같다.”

Artist statement:

What I seriously realize as I live abroad is that even though I might be living in a different culture, how I perceive it in the end comes from Korean basis. My cultural Identity is my life and my yearning. The Four Gracious Plants (Apricot orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo) are how I express my will to live on. The apricot blossom especially reflects my attachments in my life. Especially the painting chrysanthemum gave me some time to retrospect my life that I wanted to show it in a figurative language: the blank margins in the chrysanthemum.

문화가 다른 타국에 살면서 깨닫는 건 보여지는 사물의 해석 조차도 매우 한국적 근거로 보고 있다는 것이다. 나의 문화적 정체성은 삶이며 그리움이다. 사군자를 주제로 나의 삶을 지탱하는 의지를 표현 하였으며 그중 삶은 애착을 매화의 화려함으로 그리고 국화의 여백을 통해 뒤를 돌아 볼 수 있는 여유를 조형적 언어로 나타내 보았다.

I have always been interested in line, specifically a Korean style line. Through my study of traditional metal work I visualize Korean style line as composed, simple and subtle. Through my works I want my contemporaries to feel the beauty of traditional metal craft. In today’s busy world people have few opportunities for contemplation. I offer my silent teapots series as an opportu-nity to experience tranquil moments.

Artist statement:

In order to store something, you need a vessel that is large enough to hold whatever you are trying to store. To store more in the vessel, you must remove whatever is inside first to create more room. This process is very similar to the process of matur-ing. To have a product such as aged food, you must store it in a vessel and let it mature over time. Then, when it is time, you take it out so that it is ready to be served. It is like a woman’s heart and character. They store what is good and wise and the result is warmth and attraction.

무언가를 담아내는 그릇으로 사용 되어진다는건 그만큼 품이 넉넉하고 비어내는 과정이 필요할것이다. 또한 그안에서 오래도록 숙성시키는 과정을 거쳐 마침내 가장 맛있고, 영양이 좋을때 필요로하는 이에게 내어주는 항아리.. 마치 세상을 담아내고 품으며 점점 성숙해져가는 아름다운 여인의 마음과 흡사하지 않을까 생각해본다.

Daru, Jung Hyang Kim studied at Seoul National University and received her Masters degree from Pratt Institute in 1980. She has been widely exhibited in the United States, Korea and Paris.

Daru's exhibitions have been reviewed in numerous publications including, the New York Times, Art in America, Art Asia Pacific, Asia Times, Space Magazine, New York Sun, Business week, Wolgan Misool, ArtinCulture, Art Gazette Paris and numerous local newspapers and televisions.

Daru is the winner of MTA Arts for Transit - Jamaica Line(Crescent Street Station).This project was completed in May 2007.Since the completion of Crescent Street station, in 2011 Daru finished monumental public installation in Pusan and Sacheon Korea.One in Pusan is 26'x 30' mosaic for LIG Insurance Company.Two in Sacheon is 6' X 60' back lit glass piece for LIG Insurance Company HD Center entry tunnel and 13' X 155' outdoor mosaic piece.In 2012 Daru completed 12' x 20' back lit glass piece for NYU Medical Center lobby in New York City. 2013 12"x 24'out door mosaic piece for NYU Medical Center.

My work is a response to my fascination with the two differ-ent ways of seeing; the hidden and mysterious aspects of nature versus painterly reality. I like to bring together opposite elements in my work to pose as an inquiry to the different perspectives of life, spirituality and nature. The elements of nature, or certain sensations from nature’s impressions are the starting point. Of-ten times I use a variations of circles and decorative patterns. The circles become patterns, the patterns become flowers and the flowers become patterns, and soon, the canvas starts its own imaginative journey into a hybrid of the natural and imagined world.

내작품은 두가지 시각(회화적 시각과 보이지 않고 신비로운 자연적 시각)이 공존하는 세계의 매력에 대한 대답이다. 나는 삶, 자연, 영혼 등에 대한 다양한 시각에 대한 궁금증을 제시하기 위해서 상반되는 재료를 가지고 작품을 표현하는 것을 좋아한다. 종종 원이나 다양한 문양을 이용하는데, 원이 어떤 일정한 패턴이 되고, 그 패턴이 꽃이되고, 그 꽃이 다시 패턴이 되면서 캔버스는 자연스러움과 상상이 혼합된 그만의 상상 속 여행을 시작한다.

I open the door and turn on the music as stepping into the office every morning, where my workroom at the side welcomes me. Grabbing a brush with fresh smell of ground coffee brings me happiness. I like drawing, sketching, painting and all other processes for a final piece. Working on the piece is al-ways sweet - fulfilling the thirst for passion giving peace in busy days.

I currently have found Korean traditional folk painting very attractive.The reason for that is maybe my nostalgia for home country grows bigger

as I get older.Folk painting makes me think of my old days in Korea. The folk painting

looks simple, yet each line has its own strength with profound and mysterious messages. It also reflects the everyday life of people, which warms my heart thinking of it.

The lotus in bloom at garden brings me the memories, and beautiful col-ors make me feel the affection of old days.

Its unique pictorial attractiveness should be the reason why people around the world is taking notice of and praising about the Korean traditional folk painting, like K-POP is getting popular.

사무실 문을 열고 음악을 틀면 한쪽켠에 비켜있는 작업실이 나를 반긴다.커피 한잔을 마시며 붓을 잡는 가슴에 행복이 고인다. 나는 그림 그리는 일이 좋다.바쁜 사업과 일과로 짬내보는 갈증일까 그림 그리는 일이 더욱 달콤하다.

요즈음 난 민화에 푹 빠졌는데 외국에 살며 고향이 그리워서 일까 점점 나이 들어감에 따라 고향이 그리워질땐 곧잘 민화를 그리게 된다.

단순하면서도 힘이 느껴지고 오묘하고 따뜻한 민화가 매력적이다.어릴적 대청에서 멀리 바라봄직한 연꽃들이 아름다운 색을 입고 눈앞에 드러난 뿌리깊은 정감

My work is created through my thought processes of imag-inary landscapes, visualizing the invisible and narrating each story as appeared in my dreams.

Each piece is produced by using various enamels, multiple firings, crumpling/folding metal foil and mesh in creating special effects.

The illusionary images make the pieces appear very like water-color painting and depict landscapes as seen in my dreams.

나의 작업은 꿈속에 그리는 풍경들을 개인적으로 시각화하고 이야기하는 과정의 표현이다.

칠보 유약과 소성방법을 다양하게 사용하고 금속 포일과 망을 접거나 구기고 뭉쳐서 작업을 한다.

Born in Busan, Korea in 1949, Su Kwak grew up near the seashore and the mountains of her native country. She moved to the United States in 1973 where she attended college at the University of St. Thomas in Houston and later completed her MFA with honors at the University of Chicago. She is represented by the June Kelly Gallery in SoHo, New York City and the Ralls Collection in Washington, DC. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Korea. Recently she had a traveling retrospective exhibition at the Brauer Museum of Art (2012) and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (2013).

Artist statement:

I often use images of circles to symbolize the source of light and life. Sometimes, circles represent the sun or moon. Some circles are partial circles and some are full circles, expressing both visible and invisible reality. Another characteristic of my paintings is the three-dimensional relief quality of the surfaces of the paintings. On the surfaces, there are cutout shapes or slashed cuts or folded shapes that protrude from the canvases. The notion of visible and invisible reality is reinforced through the layers of canvas in the paintings. For a long time, I have been exploring the meaning of human suffering and healing through my works. Recently, I added the meaning of time which is experienced through contrasting moments in several panels of paintings.

저는 자주 빛과 생명의 원천을 상징하는 원형을 작품에 이용합니다. 어떤 때는 이 원이 태양이나 달을 나타냅니다. 어떤 원은 완전하며, 어떤 원은 부분적인 원인데 이 것은 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 현실을 표현합니다. 저의 작품의 또 다른 특징은 작품표면의 조각성입니다. 표면의 형태가 오려졌거나 선이 베어진 것, 혹은 형태가 접혀 앞으로 튀어나옵니다. 이런 겹겹의 캔버스를 통해 보이거나 보이지 않는 현실을 힘있게 나타냅니다. 저는 오랫동안 인간의 고통과 치유의 뜻을 작품을 통하여 추구해 왔읍니다. 최근 이에 또한 대조되는 시간의 관념을 경험할 수 있게 여러개의 화판을 연결한 작품을 하고 있읍니다.

My art work is a tool to express emotions and sentiments that fill my life. I strive to become one with my paintings through paintings of a woman’s back or anthropomorphism of inanimate objects. The work, LIBERATION, is an expression of a wistful dream of freedom through a depiction of flight of butterflies that were locked up inside furniture. I painted BLUEBIRD as a symbol of love and hope after a recentrealization that the bluebird of happiness I could not find in my youth even after an exhaustive search has always been living inside of me.I hope that my works provide comfort to others as they do to me.

나에게 작품은 삶에서 채워지는 감성을 표현하는 하나의 도구다. 나는 주로여인의 뒷모습 또는 사물의 의인화를 통해 그림과 나를 일치시킨다. 이번 작품 LIBERATION은 가구안에 갇혀있던 나비들을 비상시킴으로써 내안에 움츠려 왔던 자유로움과 애처로운 꿈들을 놓아주고 싶은 바램을 담았다. 그리고 사랑과 희망을 상징시킨 BLUEBIRD는 젊은날 어느 곳에서도 찾아볼 수 없었던 파랑새가 사실은 항상 내안에 살고 있었다는 것을 최근에 발견하고 그림으로 표현하였다. 나의 작품들이 나에게 위안이 되듯 세상을 살아가는 많은 이들에게 기쁨을 가져다 주는 쉼터가 되었으면 한다.

Artist statement:

The title of my series is called "Breath", which is inspired by growing gem-inating potatoes since 2011 in my kitchen. Through this series I wanted to express the existence of life in unlikely places. This year, I have started the second series of 'Breath II', and try to convey the radiation of positive lights and peace besides the desire of potato's survival in 2011 'Breath' series.

I've been studying how to express the "Ki", meaning the energyof life and universe in harmony with nature.Using twigs, nips, brushes, bamboo sticks and many other found objects in nature, and applying techniques of splashing and spilling as wellwith minimumcolors and Chinese ink on our Korean tradi-tional mulberry paper, I have tried to express this interesting and important concept. It also demonstrates my relationship with my cultural heritage as someone living in a foreign country.

'숨'이라 불리는 나의 작품은 부엌구석에서 싹트고 있는 감자에서 영감을 얻어 2011년부터 시작한 작업이다. 나는 이작업들을 통하여 소외된 것들의 삶의 존재를 표현하고자 함이다. 2011년 '숨'씨리즈에서 감자의 생존욕구를 표현한 것에 반하여, 2015년 올해에는 두번째 '숨II'에서는 긍정적인 빛과 평화의 발산을 실으려 노력했다.

나는 자연의 조화속에서 느끼는 '기'-생명의 힘, 우주에너지-를 어떻게 자유롭게 표현 할 수 있을지 연구한다. 자연을 더욱 자유롭게 표현하고자 대나무, 펜, 붓, 나무가지 등을 사용한선, 때로는 흘리기, 뿌리기 등의 기법을 써먹과 절제된 색채로 우리의 전통 닥지에 흥미롭고도 중요한 개념을 표현하고자 했다. 이것은 이국에 사는 사람으로써 나의 조국의 전통문화와의 관계를 또한 표현하고자 함이다.

Artist statement:

-Transubstantiation: in search of the invisible energy-Resonance: In my life I has been searching for ways to

paint not just things or Beings but their existential situations. The source of the resonance is obviously the spirit without which nothing would come into existence, and my continuous line is the means by which I would reveal the fact that everything in the universe is in constant exchange and that man and animals, stones and God have always exchanged their spirit each other. The universal spirit is revealed by my continuous line. <Gong-MyungPilSun>

-변성: 뷸가시적 에너지를 찾아서-공명: 나는 단순히 사물이 존재하는 외형적인 면만 그리는 것에 만족하지 않

고 그들의 존재론적 상황을 그리는 작업을 다방면으로 모색해왔다. 나의 작품에서 말은 동물일 뿐 아니라 하나의 영혼으로 존재한다. 말의 그 강력한 아름다움 속에 영혼이 말의 몸을 입은 신의 모습이 있다

나는 모든 것이 공명이요, 메아리요, 반영이라고 추정한다. 그렇다면 무엇을 근거로 그것들이 실제로 존재한다는 확신을 가질 수 있을까? 무엇을 근거로 우리는 실재하는 것과 실재하지 않는 것을 구분할 수 있단 말인가-몸짓-나에게 그린다는 것은 나에게서 떠나지 않는 이 강렬한 의심에 직면하는 방법이다.

-공명필선-내가 발명해 낸 이 공명필선을 통해 나는 모든 존재하는 것들 ,즉 보이는 것들은 단지 환영에 불가하다는 사실을 보여준다. 우리 눈앞을 스쳐가는 모든 것들은 형태로 만들어졌다가 다시 선이 되고 도 다른 형상으로 이어진다. 나는 이 표현방법을 통해 무한이라는 개념을 직접 보고 체험하며 관객들에게 이 체험을 선사한다. 공명필선은 우리를 구성하고 있는 파장들을 우리가 눈으로 볼 수 있게 해 주는 나만의 방법이다. 우리 눈에 보이는 세계는 폐쇄적인 형태가 아니라 하나의 진동하는 연속체이고 관념으로서 그 안에서 가장 오래된 개념과 가장 최근의 개념이 서로 결합된다. 모든 것은 흐른다. 공명의 원천은 영혼이며 우주속의 모든 것은 서로 교류하며 공명하고 있다 나의 공명필선은 이러한 사실을 드러내는 수단인 것이다,

Artist statement:

Walking through boisterous lights, I immerse myself in a still river, the current of the water soothingly embracing me. Then, I become able to hear a delicate voice of mine, with the eyes of mind open, where I can stand upright with the substantial eyes of mine open. What matters is not what surrounds me, but where my feet consist in, where is unlocked my own space and time.

시끄러운 불빛들을 지나 잔잔한 강물에 나를 담그면 물의 흐름은 달래듯 나를 품는다. 그러면 나는 마음의 눈을 열고 내 자신의 미묘한 목소리를 감지할 수 있게 된다. 그때 비로소 내 실체적인 눈을 뜨고 곧게 서 있을 수 있게 된다. 이제 내가 서있는 곳은 어디라도 상관없이 나 자신의 시공간이 된다.

Artist statement:

I visualize the dynamic interactions among different cultures and ethnic orientations, which often create challenging conflicts, tensions, and harmonies.

My artwork highlights as well as reflects the various images of people, emotions, con-temporary and historical motifs. Abstract images, forms, and aesthetical sensitivity reveal the characteristics of human gestures, moods, tranquility, and spiritual values based on the Dualistic Concept of Life known as “THE YING YANG PRINCIPLES ”. These three sculptural figures (vessels) can contain one’s thoughts, memories and serve as one’s Urn for ashes.

나는 다른 문화와 인종간의 문화적 차이에서 일어나는 갈등과 긴장감의 아름다운 조화를 표현하고자 한다. 내 작품에는 다양한 사람들의 제스츄어가 지난 역사속의 여인들 모습에서 단순화 시킨 이미지로 현대적이거나 오래된 모티브들과 함께 사용되어 강조되고있다. 또한 추상적 이미지, 형태, 미적인 감성은 음양’의 원리를 기반으로한 동양의 정신적 가치에 기초하고있다.

이번에 출품된 3점의 조형 작품들은 조각적 요소외에 감상자의 사색과 기억들을 담을 수 있는 용기로써 오브제나 유골함(납골함)으로도 사용될 수 있다.

Essence of Nature Nature tends to bring out significant innate expressions for

everyone; it plays an especially important role in an artist's life. Therefore, the artist who works with nature must be content in order to bring out its abundance of fragrances. Keunyoung Song belongs to the group of artists who have built their works from the special interests that they have—specifically the mys-tery and the beauty of nature.

나에게 자연은 항상 경이와 감탄의 대상이다. 하지만 그 자연을 사실 그대로 나의 그림으로 옮길 생각은 없다.

나는 자연을 구성하는 여러가지 요소들 - 꽃, 돌, 나무, 물 그리고 그들의 움직임을 가지고 이야기를 재구성 한다.
