MEET YOUR CHOBHAM MANOR EVENTS SUB-COMMITTEE The events sub-committee for Chobham Manor Residents Association aims to build a sense of community through events and activities. All residents can join in, help and suggest activities. Contact us at [email protected]. News of events are also on the message board or Facebook.

Our current members are: Bliss Holmes, Steve Potter, Neil Sinden, Lynne Roberts, Joe Hull, Lucia Campagnuolo, Encarna Nearchou and Cath Arnold.

So far, we have organised three well-attended events:

Summer Picnic in the Rain Garden 22/07/18 – Our first event in the rain garden. Everyone brought food and there were games and activities for children. We labelled the trees in the garden and made bunting.

Tea party in the Rain Garden 09/09/18 – There were tables laden with cakes of all kinds, drinks, tea and coffee under a large marquee.

Second hand sale of Children’s items 17/11/18 – an array of ‘nearly new’ children’s toys, clothes, books and maternity clothes for sale.

Thank you to everyone who joined in with volunteering, providing food and drinks in great variety and who helped with setting up the events. Special thanks to:• Joe Hull who has provided a marquee, tables and chairs• Lynne Roberts for the layout of the flyer• Sharan Ansong, Business Lead – Chobham Manor, for being

supportive and hands on with ideas, printing and help in planning and organisation

• Taylor Wimpey and their security staff for help in closing the roads during the events.

Following these events, we want to build up a useful stock of equipment (folding tables, chairs, marquee, bunting etc.) that not only may be used for community wide activities but also for those residents wanting to organise a party or picnic. Joe has subsequently obtained chairs which we now have in storage and in the spring, we could have a chair restoring workshop. If anyone spots a good and large second-hand marquee, please let us know on the email listed above.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the Christmas Party, see the front page for more details.

SCHOOL PLACES…

PLANTING DAFFODIL BULBS AT CHOBHAM ACADEMY Primary pupils from Chobham Academy at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park have been getting green-fingered by planting daffodil bulbs at their school. The bulbs were donated by Taylor Wimpey East London. This was part of its national Proud campaign, which aims to show the housebuilder’s commitment and pride in leaving a lasting legacy in the communities they build in. The bulbs are set to grow into a bright, floral tribute to the local area.

Michael O’Leary, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey East London said: “We are proud to be building a new community at our Chobham Manor development at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. We want to leave a place that both our customers and other local residents will enjoy long after we have finished building. We were thrilled to donate the bulbs to Chobham Academy and we hope that they will grow into a lovely display that young people and the wider community will admire in years to come.”

FESTIVE WONDERLAND AT THE SHOW HOME

Christmas is nearly upon us, and once again we've worked with star interior designer Derek Taylor, of 60 Minute Makeover fame, to create a festive wonderland in our show homes at Chobham Manor Sales Suite. Derek has done a fantastic job and the glitter and sparkle must be seen to be believed. So why not take a visit to get some design ideas and get yourself in the Christmas spirit this month?

SCHOOL PLACES… There are two schools on the Park that have priority for Chobham Manor residents to attend. These are Bobby Moore Academy, an all through school and Mossbourne Riverside Academy Primary.

MOSSBOURNE RIVERSIDE ACADEMY was awarded Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted April 2018. Providing your child with an exceptional place for learning, we believe anything is possible with the right attitude. We believe in the freedom to learn creatively in a calm, safe environment – and we believe every child can succeed. A friendly, caring, outstanding primary academy with superb facilities.

Mossbourne Riverside Academy have places available Open day information is on our website www.mra.mossbourne.org. Please call 0208 173 0650 to register your place at an Open Event for Reception 2019-20 entry. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]

BOBBY MOORE ACADEMY (BMA) welcomed their first cohort of Reception children on 18 September. BMA offers world class facilities and an outstanding education to the communities on and around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Reception students are currently enjoying the park’s facilities with swimming masterclass lessons in the Aquatics Centre.

To find out more about Reception places for September 2019 and upcoming open mornings, please contact [email protected]

CHILDREN’S ITEMS SECOND-HAND SALE Bliss Holmes and Felix Berenskoetter, part of the CMRA events sub-committee team, hosted a second-hand sale of children’s toys, clothes, books and maternity clothes. The event took place on the morning of Saturday 17 November at Timber Lodge Café.

Bliss and Felix promoted the event to both Chobham Manor residents and neighbouring East Village residents. They gained

so much interest with 14 local residents registered to set up a stall and sell their ‘nearly new’ items. Over 60 people turned up searching around for goods at a great price.

Lisa Bari from East Village Playgroup supported the event and helped man the donations stall. This stall was overwhelmed with items donated from residents. We raised approximately £27 in sales and a further £50 donation gifted to The Magpie Project, a charity providing practical support and advice for mothers and children under five living in temporary or insecure accommodation in Newham. Find out more about the charity here www.themagpieproject.org. All clothes left over on the donation tables were gifted to the Magpie Project charity and East Village Playgroup has collected the donated toys for use at their weekly Monday morning session.

We plan to host more events next year, keep an eye out for future events.

AWARD WINNING E20 FOOTBALL FOUNDATION

Good news, our very own E20 Football Foundation has recently won ‘Community Project of the Year’ at the Newham Business Awards. Jonathan Silman, Director of E20 Football Foundation said “I’m overwhelmed and humbled by the continued support we have received. To have won this award is an honour and really shows the passion and dedication to everyone involved in the foundation.”

E20 Football Foundation have also been shortlisted for ‘Community Project of the Year’ at the FA National Awards. We look forward to hearing whether they are successful in gaining another huge award to add to their collection. If you would like to join E20 Football Foundation, contact [email protected].

CHOBHAM MANOR DEVELOPMENT IS PROGRESSING FAST…

PHASE 2 - All blocks in Phase 2A are nearing completion, the scaffolding has been taken down and ground works on 2A-A along Honour Lea Avenue are in progress. Phases 2B, C and D are working to programme and due to be completed in summer 2019.

The green area and external works are being carried out, with paving now 50% complete to areas around the green. Play equipment has been installed and some trees have been planted. Road works around the new Derny Avenue are underway and white lining will be carried out soon.

Work is being completed very quickly and we hope to welcome our first residents on Phase 2 before Christmas.

PHASE 3 - Piling work has started and the pre-bore work is progressing well. The new hoarding between Derny Avenue and Phase 3A has been erected, in preparation for Derny Avenue to be partially opened when areas of Phase 2-A are occupied.

SITE SAFETY - Following inspection, it was decided to move the pedestrian access to the site office away from construction traffic, by segregating vehicles and pedestrians. This has now been completed and the new pedestrian site access is located on Abercrombie Road.

HOW TO HAVE A MERRY GREEN CHRISTMASThere has been a lot of awareness about the environment this year. We thought

we’d give you some ideas about how to celebrate a magical and more environmentally friendly Christmas.

CHRISTMAS TREES If you’ve got

an artificial tree already, then it’s great to reuse

it.If you’re looking to buy a real tree then consider

buying a potted tree or tree with roots that you can

plant and even re-use next year.

If you’d like to fell a tree, aim to buy an FSC certified tree.

This means it has been grown sustainably and ethically.

‘Real’ Christmas trees are collected for free by the council

if you book a garden waste collection using your My

Newham account – just make sure you remove the

lights and decorations first!

https://www.newham.gov.uk/Pages/News/

Remember-to-recycle-this-Christmas.aspx

DECORATIONS Make your own Christmas

decorations and turn this into a fun family activity:

Cut out snowflakes from paper and hang them in windows or around the home

Make paper garlands (instead of using tinsel)

Use natural decorations like pinecones, dried orange slices and dried greenery

Make and paint salt dough decorations to hang on

your tree.

WRAPPING PAPER Look through your cupboards

for paper from previous years and use it all up. If you

need more paper, consider using newspaper or pages from

magazines, FSC or recycled brown parcel paper instead

that you can decorate.

Not convinced? Then when you’re out buying new

Christmas wrapping paper, avoid the sturdier ones that

are likely to have a plastic coating or contain foil and

glitter as these can’t be recycled. Make sure you remove

any ribbons or string from paper before recycling.

Here are some fun ideas on how to make your

homemade wrapping paper look beautiful:

Add greenery and berries tied with parcel string

Make a salt dough ornament as decoration or a name tag

Paint Christmas shapes using stencils

Print a pattern with stamps

Write text or names with a stencil

Cut out paper snowflakes and attach on top

Make bows out of newspaper

Add dried orange slices with pine twigs.RECYCLING

CHRISTMAS CARDS Try making your own cards on recycled or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

paper. If you’re not into making your own cards, consider buying Christmas cards printed on FSC

paper – Waitrose sell some nice ones. Try choosing cards that do not have a plastic coating, foil

or glitter on them as these can’t be recycled. All cards gifted without

foil and glitter can be recycled including the envelopes.
