Chisenhale Chatter for Year 3 – Monday 4 th May We hope you have been able to keep to the daily learning that we set in the last Chatter, enjoying our new core book Charlie Small! When we are able to come back to school, it will be fantastic to share our learning that we have completed at home and lots of new skills that we have learnt from our family members too! This week’s Chatter is similar to last week’s, providing a daily timetable of home learning tasks. Please try to do this so that you are keeping up with the Year 3 curriculum. The parts in blue indicate that you need to do a task, whether it is share your thoughts and opinions to a question, complete some writing or be creative. These tasks will normally be recorded in your exercise book - remember to write the date and the name of the learning task, e.g. ‘Literacy’ or title of the White Rose maths task. There are also optional ‘Extra for Experts’ challenges (E4E) and these are highlighted in yellow. You can still use the BBC Bitesize materials either online or via the red button (which are great!), log into Studyladder and challenge each other on Times Tables Rockstars, but we would like you to make sure you complete this learning. It will mean you are following a timetable similar to what we do in school. Remember to have breaks in between your learning and keep active! 9:00 PE with Joe Wicks – do this every day! It will keep your mind and body healthy and alert https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ 9:30 Literacy, including learning spellings and showing your neat handwriting. 10:30 Break – Make sure you move around and are active 11:00 Maths – Use the White Rose, including times tables practise sometimes using Times Tables Rockstars. 12:00 Lunch 1:00 Mindfulness - Try Cosmic Kids: Zen Den (on YouTube) or use Go Noodle. 1:15 Wider curriculum subjects stated on the daily timetable, such as Science, Music, Art, PE, Topic, Spanish, RE 3:00 Reading – daily reading for at least 15 minutes. Well-being and reflection

This week we will be continuing our exploration of the value Resilience by thinking about Resilience and history. We will be using VE day as our focus for this reflection. VE day invites us to recall a time when a terrible conflict ended and people all over Europe could start the long process of rebuilding their lives after the violence of World War Two. It was a time of great hardship for soldiers and civilians. All people had to show resilience to be able to help their communities to survive. For our families from Bangladesh, the end of

the Bangladesh Liberation War in December 1971 is another example of the end of a conflict where a great deal of resilience was needed by many. More information about VE Day is

available on https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-

video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr and there are

some great photographs to look at and

talk about on https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/10-

photos-of-ve-day-celebrations. The BBC will be

showing lots of VE Day footage on

Friday 8th May and we imagine that BBC

Bitesize will include relevant activities as

well.

In her Chatter sent out on Monday Ms Taylor will also be giving

you some ideas of how to mark this day at home, as we might

have done in school.

As your reflection activity for this week, we would like to invite you to have a conversation with relatives or family friends who are in your household or available safely over the internet. If they are happy to talk about this, ask them about their stories or their parents stories of resilience during those difficult times. How did people get through these hard times in living history?

Page 5: Chisenhale Chatter for Year 3 Monday 4 May We hope you ... · World War Two. It was a time of great hardship for soldiers and civilians. All people had to show resilience to be able

In next week’s Chatter, we will have a gallery to showcase your work! If your parents/carers are happy for a photo of

your work to go on in the Chatter and on the website, please ask them to send these

to the [email protected] email address, stating what year group you are in and the teacher the photo needs to be passed on to. We will not

include your names on these.

Here a photo sent to us by Lesley of

some work created by a lovely child in Year 3 that is displayed in our school’s

window.

Writing skills Example from the text

Noun phrases

Powerful verbs

Conjunctions

Range of Punctuation

Choose the key vocabulary from these pages. Do you know what all the words mean? To clarify these, you can:

Use your previous knowledge - think about your reading knowledge and conversations you have had. Has this word been included and in what context?

Look them up in a dictionary at home or online https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/

Now that you have understood the key vocabulary, draw an illustration

to match this part of the story?

Label your picture with key vocabulary from the story.

For example: Rumble of thunder

Swirls and eddies

E4E: Write a prediction of what is waiting for Charlie around the corner?

Make a list of as many powerful verbs you can find on pages 14 - 15 to

create a verb bank. This verb word bank will be used in future writing so

make sure you write these clearly and with the correct spelling from the

text.

Let’s remind ourselves what a verb is. (You can watch a video on BBC Bitesize) - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrqqtfr/articles/zpxhdxs)

Verbs - A verb is a word used to describe an action, state or occurrence. Verbs can be used to describe an action, that’s doing something. For example, like the word ‘jumping’ in this sentence:

The rabbit was jumping in the field.

‘Reaching over my shoulder with one hand, I felt around in my rucksack

until I found…’

Write a paragraph to describe how Charlie escapes the crocodile using your

bank of powerful verbs.

Topic (Geography)

Focus question to investigate as a geographer: Can you name up to six cities in the UK and locate them on a map?

In your exercise books, write todays date and focus question. Create a mind map of what you already know about explorers. Do you know the names of any famous explorers?

Explorer of the Week! Christopher Columbus Who was Christopher Columbus? What did he discover?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhpchbk/articles/znchkmn

As our topic is Explorers, in this activity, you will be exploring the United Kingdom (UK). Look at the map of the UK!

Can you find.... - The different countries of the UK? - Their capital cities? - The seas surrounding the UK? Now use the map to write down names of six cities. For example: 1. Cambridge Point to each of the cities on the map to someone in your house to show them where they are located. Research the weather in the six different cities. Use this link to help you: https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather

E4E: Which one of the cities that you listed would you like to explore the most? Why? Draw an image of what you might see/find in the city you would like to explore.

Investigation The sun makes a rainbow when white sunlight passes through rain drops. The raindrops act like tiny prisms. They bend the different colours in white light, so the light spreads out into a band of colours that can be reflected back to you as a rainbow. Watch these videos for further explanation of how rainbows are formed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqbgJ3c3yhc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCPPLhPTAIk Can you grow a rainbow? Method:

1. Cut the kitchen roll into the shape of a rainbow. 2. At each end, use the felt-tip pens to colour a rainbow about 2cm up

from the bottom. Remember the order of the colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (if you have these colours at home).

3. If you have one, attach a paperclip to the top of the rainbow and tie a piece of thread to it. This will allow you to hold your rainbow.

4. Add water to the two bowls. 5. Hold the rainbow with both ends

slightly submerged into each bowl of water and watch your rainbow grow!

Art This week we are going to do some art based on the longest river in

the world the Nile, 6,650 miles! Here’s a short video about how the ancient Egyptians used the Nile. You might want to watch for ideas of things you would like to add in to your drawing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZOPWSXMvzI

When making your art:

Lightly sketch out your work and then add the details. Use some of your experimental lines, which we did with our

Van Gogh drawings last term. Try and use colours that would be used in these Egyptian

drawings. Music On the Chisenhale website, there are ideas for your music learning to look at. You could also try out the BBC Bitesize Music activity for this week - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons. You can access this on the website link or via the red button on your TV.

RE

Here are a few common terms used during Ramadan, can you find out what they all mean?

Suhoor/Sehri – Iftar – Zakat –

Alhamdullilah Poster Ramadan is the perfect time for being grateful, it is a time when Muslim people are thinking about the things they are thankful for. It is important to be thankful for the many blessings given to us every single day and Muslims like to think about how each one is a precious gift from Allah.

Page 25: Chisenhale Chatter for Year 3 Monday 4 May We hope you ... · World War Two. It was a time of great hardship for soldiers and civilians. All people had to show resilience to be able

Alhamdullilah means “Praise be to God” in Arabic. You could create a poster with the heading “Alhamdullilah for…” or “I am thankful for …” and each day write (or draw) 1 thing you are grateful for on the poster. By the end of Ramadan you will have a lovely list of all the good things in your life!

Moon Sighting Binoculars

Have a go at the tradition of moon sighting with binoculars you can put together. You can use these binoculars each day to chart the changes of the moon during Ramadan. Make these binoculars at home, use this website for instructions, or design your own

This term we are looking into the Athletics and the different disciplines that make up this

diverse sport! Last week we practiced training for the 100m sprint and looked at what it

takes to be a sprinter!

Can you remember any things that a sprinter needs to have to win a race?

This week we are going to look at the Javelin! This is a throwing sport not a running

sport. The aim of Javelin is to throw the javelin as FAR as possible. The athlete who

throws the furthers is the winner… SIMPLE!

Page 26: Chisenhale Chatter for Year 3 Monday 4 May We hope you ... · World War Two. It was a time of great hardship for soldiers and civilians. All people had to show resilience to be able

Click on the link below to have a look at some Javelin throwing in action! Can you answer

these questions about the video?

1) Why do you think the athletes take a run up?

2) What part of the body do the athletes use in throwing the javelin?

3) What scale do the numbers on the grass go up in?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2e_VbAjx5g

Do you have any questions of your own to find out?

The world record for the longest javelin throw is 98 metres! That’s almost an entire

football pitch!

Let’s train with an Olympic athlete to get our bodies in shape to compete! Follow along

with the video and throw as hard as you can!
