Money isn’t everything inpolitics as the BC Liberalslearned in the Chilliwack-

it began. Of that, $15,392.31 wasspent on promotional material and$21,161.62 on advertising.

The BC NDP spent an additional$60,337.38 during the campaign.

Chilliwack residentswho have waited yearsto hear details about

land deals at city hall in the1990s may be out of luck asformer director of develop-ment Grant Sanborn is set toplead guilty in August.

Sanborn faces three countsof breach of trust in connec-tion with development dealsapproved at Chiliwack cityhall between 1991 and 2002.

In December 2010, a pro-vincial court trial was sched-uled for Feb. 27 of this year. That was delayed as Sanbornre-elected in March to havehis case heard by a SupremeCourt judge. That movemeant a trial wasn’t likely tostart until 2013.

On Monday, Sanborn wasscheduled to enter a guiltyplea in Chilliwack court. Thatwas postponed to August atwhich sentencing is expected, according to the court registry.

The three charges againstSanborn were announcedJune 25, 2010, after a lengthyinvestigation by special pros-ecutor Robin McFee.

MLA and former mayorJohn Les was cleared of crimi-nal wrongdoing in connectionwith the land deals in question.

Two women are facing charges afterpolice traced an American com-plaint about stolen credit card

information to a Chilliwack home earlierthis month.

Investigating a complaint from theUnited States, Mounties with the RCMP’sCrime Reduction Unit searched a home inthe 46000 block of First Avenue on July 11.

Police say someone living at the home

had used stolen credit card informa-tion to make purchases totalling almost$9,000.

Inside the home police arrested a manon outstanding warrants and two women.Police say the public should review theirstatements for fraudulent transactions.

“In this instance, it appears as thoughnone of the credit cards were actually lostor stolen,” Sgt. Steve McLeod said.

RCMP spokesperson Const. TammyHollingsworth said the women’s roles are“still under investigation.”

Brittany Gail Green Laduke and SarahPatricia Charlotte West have each beencharged with unauthorized use of creditcard data. Laduke has also been chargedwith fraud and breaching the conditionsof her release.

Slick roads, speed and inatten-tion were likely factors in aneight-vehicle pile-up on High-

way 1 near Abbotsford that closedthe eastbound lanes for about 90minutes last Friday.

A 33-year-old Chilliwack womanwas airlifted to Royal ColumbianHospital with serious injuries, whilethree others who received minor softtissue injuries were taken by ambu-lance to the Abbotsford RegionalHospital.

“We got the call at 10:43 a.m. Therewere four or five Abbotsford Policevehicles on site, and [their officers]did an astounding job,” said Const.Blair Fuller of the RCMP Fraser Val-ley Traffic Services.

The incident began with a rela-tively minor collision that happenedin the eastbound lanes on Highway1 just east of the McCallum Roadinterchange, in which a boat trailerside-swiped another vehicle, saidFuller.

“They had just pulled over or ithad just happened, and the traf-fic coming over the hill had to slowdown and were hitting the brakes, and that’s when the second collisionoccurred,” he said.

Police believe a black 2008 Hyun-

dai Accent then crashed into theback of a dump truck.

Then as a white Pacific BreezeHeating and Cooling service van hadstopped or slowed down, it appar-ently was hit by another truck fromthe rear and was pushed into a vehi-cle ahead of it, said Fuller.

In total, eight vehicles were dam-aged, he said.

The Hyundai was wedged under

the rear of the dump truck, requiringAbbotsford Fire Rescue membersto cut the female driver from Chilli-wack out of the wreckage.

Fuller was encouraged by the factte woman was still able to move herlimbs following the violent collision.

The complicated crash will beunder review for some time aspolice will have to go through sev-eral statements, but Fuller said road

conditions likely contributed to thesecond crash.

“We believe it was a combina-tion of the things. The recent heatbrought the oil up to the surfaceof the asphalt and combined withrain makes it slippery. We figurespeed, driver inattention and a fewmechanical factors may have alsocontributed,” said Fuller.

Health Canada has removed a toxichealth product from a Chilliwack Chi-nese medicine store.

Zhuifeng Tougu Wan, which purports toreduce joint pain and stiffness, had been soldat Guanzhou Herbs Plus for five years, accord-ing to the store’s owner, J. Doan.

But Doan told the Times last week that hedidn’t know the pills, which come in a smallmustard-yellow package and pill container, were banned for sale in Canada because theyhave been found to contain “toxic levels ofmercury.”

In 2006, Health Canada issued a “foreignproduct alert” in which it told consumers notto use the pills. The previous year, a UnitedKingdom regulatory body found the pills con-tain three per cent mercury.

Doan expressed surprise when told the pillswere not approved for sale in Canada. He saidthe pills, like many items in his store, come

from a Richmond supplier that Doan saysguarantees its products.

“The supplier controls everything,” he said.A phone number listed for the company

returns a message that it is “experiencing tech-nical difficulty.”

The Health Canada release from 2006 warnsconsumers that mercury, when consumed, can affect the kidneys, central nervous systemand brain and cause a host of problems includ-ing memory loss, insomnia and concentrationproblems.

“Canadians who have this product areadvised not to use it, and should consult with ahealth care professional if they have concernsabout their health related to the use of thisproduct,” the release reads.

While the product could be brought intoCanada as a personal belonging, it is notauthorized for sale. As of the 2006 release ithad “not been found in the Canadian market-place.”

With the product now seized by health offi-cials, it’s unlikely Guanzhou Herbs Plus wouldface any penalties for selling the pills.

“Compliance is normally achievedthrough a co-operative approach betweenthe party and Health Canada,” Health Can-ada spokesperson Christelle Legault told theTimes in an email. “The primary objective ofthe response strategy is to manage the riskto Canadians and use the most appropri-ate level of intervention to ensure that theresponsible regulated party brings the prod-

Citing the unreliable nature of eyewit-ness testimony, a Provincial Courtjudge convicted only one of two men

charged in connection with an Agassiz mari-juana grow operation busted in 2010.

Judge Russell MacKay acquitted Cody AllenStovin of production and possession chargesrelating to a 924-plant grow operation foundin an Agassiz mobile home on March 30,2010.

MacKay convicted Sonny William Nohr, who was found at the home when it wasraided by police, of grow op charges. But heacquitted Nohr of three charges linked to aloaded Colt 38 handgun found in a bedroomin the house. If convicted of the gun charges,Nohr would have faced a three-year manda-tory minimum prison sentence.

Unlike Nohr, Stovin wasn’t arrested at thescene. But a hydro bill was found bearinghis name in the kitchen, a vehicle licensedto Stovin was found on the property, and anRCMP officer testified that he saw Stovin atthe home a week before the raid.

But MacKay ruled that while he remainedsuspicious of Stovin’s involvement, the evi-dence wasn’t enough to prove the case.

After noting that a person can open a BCHydro account in another’s name, MacKaysaid, “The remaining evidence against Mr. St-ovin is, perhaps, sufficient to raise a strongsuspicion about his involvement, but goes nofurther.”

On the other hand, MacKay said the evi-dence against Nohr was solid and “stronglyimplicate him as a participant in cultivation.”

But he said that even though Nohr’s walletwas found in the bedroom, “I am not satis-fied that he would necessarily have beenaware of the presence of the firearm andaccessories.”

MacKay noted the messiness of the bed-room and uncertainty among investigatingRCMP officers about where, exactly, it wasfound.

“While the circumstances compellinglysuggest his participation in the enterprise,”MacKay wrote in his reasons, “it cannot beconcluded with any degree of certainty thathe was aware of the presence of the firearm inthe messy bedroom of the residence.”

Raymond Rei is crankedu p a b o u t a B . C .Supreme Court rul-

ing dismissing his appeal ofa ticket for operating a lightscooter without pedals.

The 63-year-old retiree whofounded Chilliwack’s Ray ReiMoving was convicted in Pro-vincial Court of violating therules requiring that his elec-tric scooter have the bicycle-style pedals.

He was found guilty ofoperating a vehicle without adriver’s licence and insurance.Initially fined nearly $1,000,the courts have cut his fineto $170. The former furnituremover appealed the Provin-cial Court ruling but in a rul-ing posted online earlier thisweek, B.C. Supreme CourtJustice Neill Brown upheldthe lower court ruling.

“He’s mistaken in this deci-sion and I’m going to seewhat’s involved in appealingthat, if it’s possible to go to ahigher court,” said Rei.

“It’s almost like being con-victed of operating your bicy-cle without insurance, so I’llbe pursuing this.”

He says that when he ini-tially purchased his twoscooters two or three yearsago, an ICBC employee told

him he didn’t need insuranceor a licence — with or without

pedals.“She made a remark-

able observation which I’llalways remember. She saidthe only difference betweenyour scooter and one of thesehandicapped scooters is thatyou’ve got two less wheels.”

Rei has racked up 20,000kilometres so far on the scoot-ers, saving what he describedas a “small fortune” in gas andinsurance.

But he’s also been given 10tickets for operating themwithout pedals. He considersthe pedals a safety hazard.

“They hang so low to theground, they’re totally use-less. When you tilt the scootergoing into a curb, they cutinto the pavement and youcrash your scooter.

“This has happened to memany times and it’s happenedto other people too and thishas all been documented.”

He says he will continue tocontest the tickets.

“As they come up in court,I’ll keep on going to court andappealing it, because I’m notguilty of this.”

But recently he took thetwo 500-watt scooters to awelding shop and had thepedals shortened and thenreattached, so that they don’tscrape the ground duringsharp turns.

“They’re welded on, they’retotally useless, but they’rethere.”

Sarah Schreier, the execu-tive director of the FRSCS,said the largest sturgeoncaught in recent years mea-sured 13 feet. But even largerones might be out there. Atthe turn of the previous cen-tury, Schreier said fishermencaught sturgeon measuringup to 20 feet long and weigh-ing 2,000 pounds.

Werk says he and his cli-ents have probably hookedfish even bigger than the onecaught last week. But reelingthem in is virtually impos-sible.

“It’s almost unheard of,” hesaid Friday, estimating thatfishermen and women losethe fight 98 per cent of thetime.

“Michael really bared downon that fish, and he stayedon top of it,” said Werk, whohas seen anglers battle stur-geon for three to five hoursbefore losing their catch. “It’sa miracle . . . it’s an Olympicmoment.”

The fish’s size is an indica-

tion that it may be more thana century old, according toWerk.

“This tells us this dinosaurfish hasn’t been caught in atleast 18 years if ever at all. I’dbet she’s over 100 years old,”he said. “It may have neverseen a human being before.”

Snell first fished the Fra-ser in 2009, when he caughta five-foot sturgeon. But hewasn’t prepared for the fish hecaught Monday.

“It is the most excitementI’ve ever had with a fish. It allhappened so quickly,” Snellsaid in the release. “Whenwe picked her head up out ofthe water, it was almost threefeet wide. I never knew a fishcould be that large.”

After a week of fishing, theSnell’s were slated to fly backto England last weekend. They will return, and Werkhopes the publicity surround-ing the massive fish will bringmore tourists like them to theFraser.

“This is a big thing for Chill-iwack and tourism in Chilli-wack,” he said.

An email to friends eventu-ally found its way to the onlinesports website Deadspin, which published Hebert’sfirst-person account.

Friends told the four menthat it sounded like a storystraight out of a movie. Evi-dently some Hollywood pro-fessionals agreed.

Hebert said he was initiallycontacted by State Street Pic-tures about a month after theDeadspin story appeared.

After being contacted byState Street, which producedthe successful Barbershopmovie franchise, Hebert andhis friends hired a lawyer famil-iar with the industry. A contractwas subsequently signed thatgave the two companies therights to develop a screenplaybased on their story.

Two writers—Peter Hoareand Chris Lilli—have sincebeen contracted by the pro-ducers to pen a screenplay.

Hebert said little moneyhas changed hands yet. ButHebert said he has talkedextensively with the writers, who wanted to know moreabout the four friends and thedynamics of their friendship.

“They wanted to write itas true to character,” Hebertsaid.

The Times asked Hebertwho he would like to see playhim in a movie, should onebe made. “I really have noidea,” he said, admitting thatthe concept of seeing a moviecharacter based on him is still“weird.”

Looking back, Hebert’snot particularly proud of theweekend.

“I guess for me, person-ally, it’s something absolutelyridiculous and stupid I did,”he said. “It’s not something I’dbrag about. But it ended upworking out OK.”

Researchers say the finding shouldspur the B.C. government, which isresponsible for freshwater fish man-agement, to launch a thorough studyto learn how widespread piscinereovirus (PRV) is and whether it is athreat to native fish.

“Thisconcernsmegreatly,”saidRickRoutledge, a Simon Fraser Univer-sity fish-population statistician. “Theprovince needs to pay attention.”

Signs of PRV were found in 13 of

15 sampled trout. Followup analysesfurther confirmed the virus’ pres-ence in these fish and identifiedtheir genetic sequencing as 99-per-cent identical to Norwegian strains. The virus has been linked to heartand skeletal muscle inflammation, afatal disease reported in Norwegiansalmon farms.

However Gary Marty, fish patholo-gist at the province’s Animal HealthCentre in Abbotsford, said the CultusLake findings suggest the virus is nota great threat. “If we have fish thataren’t sick and have this virus that wedon’t know very much about, thattells me that virus is probably not aserious concern,” he said. “If it was, those fish wouldn’t have survived tobe sampled.”

Marty also said it is possible that

PRV, first documented in a Europeanscientific paper in 2010, could be aglobal virus that is native to B.C. Heargued the links to skeletal muscleinflammation remain inconclusive.

While the virus has been detectedin high numbers in fish with skeletalmuscle inflammation, he said, it canalso be found in healthy fish.

“It may have a role, but it’s not thesole cause.”

In response to the 2010 paper, theprovince did tests on archived sam-ples of farmed salmon that died in2009, he said.

Seventy-five per cent of 404 Atlan-tic salmon tested positive for thevirus compared with 61 per cent for58 Pacific salmon—all on farms.

“It wasn’t related to anything wecould see,” he said, adding it is pos-

sible that the virus multiplies in fishthat are sick. “It’s worth investigating... but for now it doesn’t seem to be aserious problem.”

Separate tests of about 300 wildjuvenile pink salmon in the Brough-ton Archipelago showed no evidenceof the virus, he added.

The 2010 scientific paper in PLoSONE, an online publication of thePublic Library of Science, said thatsince “a causal relationship is plau-sible, measures must be taken tocontrol PRV not only because itthreatens domestic salmon produc-tion but also due to the potential fortransmission to wild salmon popu-lations.”

Marty called for a comprehensivemulti-disciplinary investigation intothe role of disease in fish population

change, focusing on an “iconic spe-cies like the sockeye salmon” acrossat least three generations or 12 years.

He estimated the sockeye studywould cost $500,000 per year, argu-ing the amount is equivalent toabout five days of Cohen Commis-sion hearings into the decline of Fra-ser River sockeye.

“This would answer questionswe’ve had for generations: Why dosalmon [populations] go up anddown?”

The Canadian Food Inspec-tion Agency announced this weekit would test B.C. wild salmonto determine the status of threesalmon diseases: infectious hema-topoietic necrosis, infectious pan-creatic necrosis and infectioussalmon anemia.

Crows are pests. They’re thereason your garbage isscattered all over the lawn

when the can lid falls off. They devour crops, and are the

indirect cause of many annoyinghours of bird cannons in ruralareas.

Their raucous caws will wakeyou up early on a Saturday. They’llpoop on your car.

So who feels sad when a crowgets shot as vermin or run over bya car? No one.

Would you feel bad if it was achimpanzee, though? How aboutif people were going out willy-nillyshooting dolphins? Not so nice tokill Flipper, is it?

The problem is, we’re learningthat crows—common-as-dirtcrows—might be among thesmartest animals on the planet.

Read almost any older textbookabout animal intelligence, and itwill tell you that birds are just notas smart as mammals. Tiny brains.

They don’t even have a neocor-tex, for crying out loud!

Which does not help explainhow some crows can apparentlycount to small numbers. Or howtheir cousins, the magpies, canrecognize themselves in a mirror—something only humans, greatapes, elephants, and a few speciesof dolphins have managed so far.

Then there’s the New Caledo-nian crow, which seems to bethe Rhodes scholar of the family

tree. These crows from the SouthPacific use tools in the wild, fash-ioning them out of sticks and bitsof grass, to reach inaccessiblefood. In captivity, one crow hasrepeatedly bent straight wires tomake better hooks for grabbingfood—without training.

Crows have also shown the abil-ity to think ahead: given a tooltoo short to reach a food source, but long enough to reach a longertool, they’ve solved the riddle onmultiple occasions.

Other animals that can do that?Humans. Apes. That’s about it.

Your family dog may be friendly, and your cat may be . . . not asmean as most cats, but neither ofthem is as smart as a crow.

So here’s my question: what dowe owe to animals that are smart, but not as smart as us?

Let’s be clear, crows are notgoing to be writing sonnets orsolving complex math equationsany time soon.

But neither will chimps orgorillas. Most people want thoseanimals treated humanely, at leastin part because of their ability to

think and reason more like we dothan, say, the common Norwegianrat.

I like my tuna dolphin-safe, andI’d prefer if any scientific testingon apes is done in as humane amanner as possible. But crows?

No one is making soft-focusnature documentaries about cutebaby crows growing up in thejungles of the Congo. Crow chickslook like bags of wrinkled skindotted with dirty feathers. Crowsdo not have permanent smileslike bottlenose dolphins. Theydon’t do tricks at SeaWorld, unlessyou count dive-bombing runs tosnatch hot dogs out of the handsof tourists.

Unlike chimps and dolphins, crows are not now, and likely nev-er will be, in danger of extinction.

I once saw a flock (or murder) ofcrows mobbing an owl, chasing itfrom tree to tree in broad daylight.

Whether we owe crows specialtreatment because of their intel-ligence, they may not need it.

Crows are tough, they’re omniv-orous, and they’ve survived andthrived in big human cities forhundreds of years.

Maybe that’s why we don’t likecrows as much as we should. They’re loud, dirty, aggressive, andsmart.

They’re us, with feathers.

Rehab unitmeetingimportantC

hilliwack-Hope MLA GwenO’Mahony will moderate a town-hall meeting next week on a deci-sion she has little, if any, power

to change. Two months ago Fraser Health

announced the closure of the 20-bed in-patient rehabilitation unit at ChilliwackGeneral Hopsital (CGH), a unit that wasopened with much fanfare from the BCLiberals in 2006.

The decision is made—the changes havebeen announced and some employeeshave been told their jobs are gone.

So what’s the point of a townhall meet-ing now?

Maybe using a democratic tool such asthis will alleviate some concerns aboutthe move, and maybe, just maybe, suchconsultation will be used as a model forthe future.

Or at least maybe Fraser Health will hearthe message that decisions as importantas this should involve some consultationbefore they are made.

More information and more input isnever a bad thing, even if the topic up fora discussion is about a hospital unit that’salready been eliminated.

Panel members for the July 31 meet-ing include representatives from theChilliwack and District Seniors ResourceSociety, the Health Sciences Association, the Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association, the Health Employees Union and FraserHealth.

“While this will be another opportunityfor residents to have their say, I’m mosthopeful it will allow us to move towardbetter services for patients at ChilliwackGeneral Hospital,” O’Mahony said in apress release issued Monday.

The new MLA optimistically suggeststhat Fraser Health should listen to Chilli-wack voices before the next steps to closethe unit are taken. The closure is likelycertain, but O’Mahony’s insistence thatFraser Health listen up should be heeded.

◗ The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at theTzeachten Community Hall (45855 Prom-ontory Rd.).

Editor:What is it going to take for the

provincial media to start askingAdrian Dix and the NDP the toughquestions they need to be asked? For that matter, what is it going totake for the media to stop being soangry about the past that they canstart to talk about the future of ourprovince and its economic health?

Premier Christy Clark does havea clear plan for the future and it’sa good one because she can seethe economic crisis that’s comingdown the pipe at us two to threeyears from now. She has alreadytaken steps to ensure that busi-nesses in this province can con-tinue to provide jobs and thrivewhen, for example, the inevitablerise in interest rates occurs orwhen Europe’s economy collapsesunder the weight of the falteringeconomies in Greece, Spain, Italyand Ireland.

It won’t matter if interest ratesrise a half point or 10 points. Ifthe province’s economic health isnot good, businesses simply won’tbe able to afford to keep peopleemployed.

Sadly, the NDP is all about now.Their vision doesn’t extend beyondthe present even when it’s appar-ent that the real questions andchallenges are lying in wait for ustwo to three years out.

Steering B.C. through the eco-nomic crisis ahead is going torequire sober forward thinkingnot the dogmatic beliefs that havefailed governments of all stripes inthe past. The media need to start

asking Adrian Dix some toughquestions about the future of ourprovince, questions he so far doesnot seem to have any answers for.

City’s responsewas not very goodEditor:

About the question in the paper:“Do you think the city of Chilli-wack response to flooding at CareyPoint was adequate?”

No! And I bet if you asked thepeople who have property at CareyPoint they would all agree with me.

To begin, they didn’t give usnearly enough sandbags, and withthose sandbags there was no sand. The hardworking men and womenwere using a child’s sand box anddirt/rock from the ground.

The berm overflowed and brokeat 5:50 p.m. and they ran out of thefew sandbags they had by 8 p.m.,

at which point two houses werecompletely surrounded with water, and another had water at theback door. It wasn’t until a newsstation was informed of the city’slack of assistance that the city sentout four loads of sand at 10 p.m.,and sand bags at 10:30 p.m., sothere was a lot of people standingaround watching the water floodtheir homes.

In my opinion these peopleshould have at least had the sandand bags on standby for immedi-ate delivery if there was a probleminstead of five hours after.

Atheists shouldhave Times columnEditor:

As someone raised in a devouthousehold I like to read the FaithToday column in the ChilliwackTimes.

However, I converted to atheismdecades ago, so I will admit I readthe comments of the various con-tributors with a different viewpointthan when I was, if you will, in theflock.

So it occurred to me that per-haps we non-believers deserve anoutlet in the Times. I can envisiona similar scenario to what FaithToday people now enjoy. We could

have different people from allwalks of life contribute columnsabout their secular belief systemsand how they arrived at them.

And make no mistake, there areatheists in all walks of life just asthere are believers.

So what could we call our weeklyoffering. Let’s just call it ReasonToday. I’m sure that differentcontributors will offer all man-ner of explanations about howreason trumped faith or how theyacquired a reasoning mind. Somemay wish to discuss fossil evidencethat refutes the biblical version ofour origins. (By the way, what wasthat snake doing in there?). Somemay wish to discuss human spiri-tuality and how it encompassesboth the religious and the secularperson.

I think I would probably writemy first column about how religionhas spawned conflict between usthrough the ages and how, in myopinion, we would be better offwithout belief in any god or godswhatsoever. Religious zeal hasresulted in conflict, misery anddeath too many times to mention. (Iwill mention them in my column.)

So I call on people of a similarbent to coalesce and have ourvoices heard. To put it plainly, weneed a push back. I’ll leave thelast word to the late ChristopherHitchens. “Good people do goodthings, bad people do bad things, but for good people to do badthings, that takes religion.”

For ex-pat Britons in Chilliwack, finding a placethat feels like home can be tough.Luckily there’s one place in townwhere a potatochip is still a crisp, a cookie is still a biscuit anda soccer ball is still a football. At the British Empire Shop on Vedder Road,English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh outlandersalike can find an authentic taste of home.Frommushy peas to meat pies and proper baconto British sweets, the local shop carries a widevariety of imported foods all dear to Britishhearts.“It’s just all the stuff people miss,” said KimTyson, who launched the shop with husbandMichael last month. “And if somebody wantssomething that we haven’t got in here, we reallytry our absolute hardest to bring it in for them.”The Tysons moved to Canada from a townSouth-East of London called Southend-On-Seafive and a half years ago looking for a better wayof life. They’ve found it, said Kim, but, like othertransplants, shemisses the food she grew upwith

in England and the way Britishersrelate to each other.Among polite Canadians, hercompatriots’ humor sometimescomes across as Cheeky she said, but that, as much as British food,is what many of her customersyearn for.“People come in here just for theBritish banter,” she said. The Tyson’s decided to open theshop after their own experiencesof trying to get their hands onauthentic British food.“When we go to British stores,we always overpay ridiculously, and chances are you get it homeand it’s out of date,” Kim said.By keeping prices low, BritishEmpiremoves stock quickly, she said, so nothingis ever out of date. That combination of authentic British foodserved up with humour at reasonable prices has

attracted customers from all over the LowerMainland and Fraser Valley. For more information about British Empire, visit www.britishempire.ca.

Chilliwack volleyball player Mari-ah Bruinsma has seen her UBCteam’s last three national champi-

onships from just about every angle. After being recruited by the Thunder-

birds in 2009, the six-foot-one middleblocker red-shirted her first season, watching her first national champion-ships from the bench to save a preciousyear of eligibility on a team saturatedwith middle-blocking talent.

“We had a very, very strong year. Wewere undefeated, and we had about fourpeople in the middle, which is a lot,” saidBruinsma, who is back in Chilliwack forthe summer, working for her parents andcoaching at a volleyball camp at G.W.Graham last week.

But things picked up dramatically forthe Unity Christian grad during her firstyear of actual play in 2010-11.

Because one of the starting Thunder-bird middles was off training with thenational team in her first semester, Bru-insma, who at played at Unity as well ason Chilliwack club teams High Altitudeand Oasis, saw the court more than sheexpected.

“It’s kind of crazy going from club toUniversity ball, especially taking that yearoff and not actually playing games,” saidBruisma of her first few times on a CIScourt. “I just kept telling myself, ‘Don’t beshaky. Don’t be shaky because that’s notreally going to help you at all.’”

Things would get a lot crazier, though, before her season was done.

Less than a week before the Canada

West finals, one of UBC’s starting middlestore an ACL in practice, propelling Bruin-sma unexpectedly into the spotlight.

After some initial nerves, though, she said she wasn’t nervous during herchampionship debut.

“Once I started playing I had so muchsupport,” she said.

After winning CanadaWest with Bruin-sma’s help, the Thunderbirds eventuallywent on to capture their fourth consecu-tive national title in straight sets againstLaval at Laval.

Bruinsma’s performance crescendoedin the championship final in front of arowdy Laval crowd with two kills, onesolo block and five block assists.

The Thunderbird’s fifth consecutivetitle, which the women captured thisMarch with a come-from-behind winover the University of Alberta Pandas, was also a dramatic affair, but it wasone Bruinsma watched mostly from thebench.

At the beginning of the season, UBCcoach Doug Reimer had introduced aneffective but somewhat unorthodox newsystem that called for only one middleblocker instead of the usual two, mean-ing less court time to go around in themiddle.

But just because she spent less time on

the court didn’t mean she felt less apart of the win.

“He’s a great coach,” said Bruin-sma of coach Reimer. “He makeseveryone feels useful, even if you’reon the bench.”

Next season, which starts witha trip to Hawaii Aug. 24, will likelynet another perspective of the

national championships for Bruin-sma should the Thundebirds findthemselves in the final again.

Bruinsma heads into her fourthyear of UBC’s Global Resource Pro-gram in September.

She’s a veteran now, but sheadmits moving from Unity, a

school of about 200 students, to abig university was an adjustmentat first.

“If you’re not used to staying ontop of things yourself, then you canget really far behind quickly,” shesaid. “In my first year I definitelystruggled a little bit, but I learned a

lot from that.”Being part of a team has helped.“Right away from the start, the

team was like family,” Bruinsmasaid.

Although she could likely finda job in Vancouver, she’s optedto work for her parents (co-own-

ers of the Chilliwack Corn Maze)and pass on some of her volleyballknow-how to local youngsters.

“It’s definitely interesting,” shesaid of her first coaching experi-ence. “All of a sudden now I’m try-ing to coach something and I’mlike, ‘Ok, how do I do that?’ I dothat myself, but I usually just do it,so I have to go back and think howto teach these kids.”

Squirts make quarterfinalsThe Chilliwack Mayhem,

the city’s first rep fastpitchteam in the squirt division, fell in the quarterfinals ofthe Provincial FastpitchChampionships.

After finishing eighth intheir league with an 11-8record, the Mayhem wentundefeated in the districtchampionships to qualifyfor the provincial tourna-ment.

Then, earlier this month, the locals went undefeatedat the Lower Mainland Cup,beating the Langley Extremein the final.

The Mayhem continuedtheir strong play at the pro-vincials, going 3-1 in theopening round to advanceto the playoffs. But despiteblood, sweat and tears, thegirls were unable to make itinto the final four.

Vipers B.C.’s bestThe Chilliwack Vipers

U-16 fastpitch boys team

are headed to the WesternCanadian Championshipsafter going undefeated atthe provincial champion-ships earlier this month.

The Vipers went unde-feated at the tournament. It’s the second straight yearthe team has been crownedthe best in the province.

The Vipers won a bye tothe semifinals after blowingout round robin opponentsSooke and Richmond 11-0and 9-0, respectively.

Pitchers Ryan Kaplanisand Brendon Donegan eachearned the shutouts.

But facing Richmondagain in the semifinals,Chilliwack found them-selves in a tight game. Rich-mond tied the game 2-2 in

the sixth inning, but Chilli-wack rallied in the seventh, with Thomas Bunn drivingin Jordan Donegan for thewinning run.

Chilliwack again facedRichmond—who beat Sookein a semifinal—in the final. The Vipers had an easiertime, winning 7-1, with stel-lar fielding coming fromBlake Timmer and SantanaMckay.

With the victory, theVipers earned a berth at theWestern Canadian Champi-onships, to be held Aug. 8 inStrathmore, Alta. The Vipersare still looking for sponsorsand hope to raise moneyfor the trip well before theevent.

Coach Jeff Donegan saidthe team “does not allow anyplayer to be left behind dueto financial reasons.”

Anyone who can help outwith expenses can contactDonegan at 604-791-0317 [email protected].

Chilliwack hosts PCSL finalsChilliwack FC will host the
