toad rescue at Ryder Lake, organized by the FraserValley Conservancy (FVC),began Friday, but this yearvolunteers didn’t get as closeto the action as they had inpast years.

To aid them on the journeythat sees thousands killed byvehicles, the FVC organizeda toad crossing for the lasttwo years where volunteersof all ages helped the littleamphibians by picking themup, putting them in bucketsand placing them across theroad.

This year the city agreed totemporary road closures toclear the way for the toads tocross on their own withouthuman interference. Pickingup the toadlets and droppingthem down again can stressthe animals, something theFVC wanted to minimizethis year.

“When volunteers pickedup the toadlets, it put stresso n t h e y o u n g a n i m a l splus the baby toads werefrightened by the presence ofvolunteers. So we are hopingto avoid that situation thisyear,” said FVC executive

One man was killed and another injuredafter a fire tore through a Chilliwackmobile home Monday afternoon.

The fire, in the Cedar Grove ManufacturedHome Park on Unsworth Road, drew morethan a dozen firefighters and sent putrid greysmoke billowing out over Sardis.

Fire crews were still on the scene at presstime but RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lea-AnneDunlop said rescue crews had located thedead man.

“One adult male has been located deceasedat the time,” Dunlop told the Times. Anotherman, she said, was taken to hospital with“smoke-related injuries.”

Investigators had not yet had a chance toaccess the scene to determine the cause ofthe fire.

Neighbours described a desperate man’sefforts to save his father after the fire brokeout around 1 p.m.

One neighbour said he “heard a boom.”The neighbour said a man then screamed“My dad’s in there,” and ran into the build-ing. He was forced to exit, however.

Bernadette MacDonald, who has lived inthe park for more than a decade, said the firewasn’t the first time flames touched the park’shomes.

“This is the fourth trailer in 15 years I’veseen go up,” said MacDonald. She said shewatched another mobile home burn in justseven and a half minutes.

Hot, dry weather extends fire riskBY TYLER [email protected]

With local roadsides drier than anEnglishman’s wit, fire crews have

been busy responding to small firesnear local highways.

Last Wednesday, firefighters attend-ed two such microblazes, both alongthe side of the Trans-Canada Highway. And while one was difficult to avoid—awheel fell off a boat trailer near theVedder/Yale interchange sparking asmall grass fire—the other was caused

by sheer carelessness. That fire, in the highway median near

the Lickman Road interchange, was thelatest that began when a stray cigarettelanding in dry bulk mulch.

“We’re getting had quite a few lately,”said assistant fire chief Ian Josephson.“Unfortunately these smokers, I guess, don’t want to dirty their cars with theirown cigarette butts and flick them outthe window and away we go.”

Not only are the fires a pain in thebutt to put out, but they’re also danger-ous.

“It’s quite hazardous for our guysbecause we have to stop in the median,in the fast lane and get out and dealwith these things.

“If [drivers] would be a little morecautious it would be appreciated fromour end.”

The dry conditions have also sparkeda fire ban for the entire Coastal FireCentre, of which Chilliwack is a part. The ban applies to open fires, camp-fires, fireworks, tiki torches and burn-ing barrels.! For updates visit www.bcwildfire.ca.

Killing spree planned

BY KIM BOLANVancouver Sun

Un i t e d N a t i o n sgang founder ClayRoueche told a fel-

The startling allegationsare laid out in new courtdocuments fi led by theU.S. attorney in responseto the Chil l iwack-bor ngangster’s appeal of a 30-year sentence handed tohim last December forheading an internationaldrug-trafficking ring andmoney laundering.

The documents said aninmate at SeaTac FederalDetention Center claimedRoueche was plotting amurderous rampage withfellow Canadian prisonerLuke Sommer that wouldculminate with Roueche’sescape.

“Roueche had informedthis inmate that Rouecheexpected the fol lowinge v e n t s t o o c c u r i n t h enear future: the murderof the assistant UnitedStates attorney who hadprosecuted Luke Sommer,

In his appeal, Rouecheis arguing that evidenceo t h e r t h a n w h a t w a sb e f o r e J u d g e R o b e r tLasnik inappropr iatelycontributed to his lengthyprison term.

All of Roueche’s legalteam’s appeal documentswere filed under seal andinaccessible.

But a 68-page response

f i l e d by a s s i s t a n t U . S .attorney Helen Brunner onJune 23 was not sealed inthe Appeal Court record.

The document lays outthe reasons why Rouechewas transferred to a high-security Illinois prison ayear ago, months beforehis sentencing and withouttelling his lawyer.

“The court noted thatalthough it applied a verylow standard of proof whenc o n s i d e r i n g a r e q u e s tby Bureau of Prisons totransfer an inmate becauseof security concerns, itwould not consider thes a m e i n f o r m a t i o n f o rs e n t e n c i n g p u r p o s e sbecause there needs tob e a h i g h e r t h re s h o l d ,o b v i o u s l y, t h a n j u s trumour, innuendo and thelike,” Brunner said.

S o m m e r , a f o r m e rU.S. Ranger convicted ofrobbing a Washington statebank, has since pleadedg u i l t y t o p l o t t i n g t h emurder of an assistant U.S.attorney.

Roueche was arrested ondrug conspiracy chargesin Texas in May 2008 afterbeing turned back as heattempted to enter Mexicofor a vacation.

He pleaded guilty in April2009 to smuggling hugequantities of marijuana andcocaine across the border,a s w e l l a s l a u n d e r i n gmillions of dollars in drugprofits.

Documents say Rouecheplanned jail break andmurder of prosecutors

botched home invasion in Abbotsford in1998.

An ensuing struggle between the twowould-be robbers and a man cleaning thehouse ended with the stabbing death of thecleaner, a 40-year-old father of four.

Federici was released to a federal half-way house in February to serve the restof his sentence. It was his second time onparole; he had been released in 2007 but wasreturned to jail for violating his parole fordrug offences.

Federici, 33, is white, five-foot-six and

159 pounds with brown hair and greeneyes. He has tattoos on his right leg andupper right arm and scars on his rightforearm.

Daycare gets go-ahead

BY PAUL J. [email protected]

AChilliwack daycare opera-tor was given a permit toset up a 25-child facility in

a downtown residential area atthe last meeting of city councildespite opposition from someneighbours.

Natasha Lundgren originallywanted to establish a 50-childdaycare centre on Reece Avenuejust a few houses down fromMcCammon elementary, butneighbourhood opposition ledher to change her application to25.

A number of neighboursaddressed council with concernsabout traffic and parking onReece, as well as noise from somany children aged 30 monthsto five years.

“Twenty-five children in ahome that is very much like myown is simply too much,” saidneighbour Lydia Nickle. “Whensomeone said to us a daycarewe were thinking eight childrenand we are not opposed to that. When we found out at one point50 children and at this pointretracted to 25 and presumablyfour adults . . . in this particularneighbourhood so close to theschool and the cul-de-sac, it sim-ply is too much.”

Nickle’s name was one of 25 ona petition presented to council tooppose the daycare.

But Lundgren had a petitionof her own with 65 signatures inaddition to a number of letters ofsupport including one from BarbPresseau, co-ordinator for Chilli-wack Community Services’ ChildCare Resource & Referral.

“It is important that childcare spaces do not decrease,”Presseau wrote. “Our provincecan find regulated child care forapproximately only 20 per centof the children needing care.”

Lundgren operates Playingto Learn Childcare Center (sic)run out of a portable on Chilli-wack secondary property, butthe school district has orderedher out as they need the space. She purchased the Reece Avenueproperty and applied to the cityfor a temporary commercialoperating permit to move theoperation to the home.

Lundgren knew there wereneighbours opposed so shesought research and support ofher own, something that helpedsway council to approve the per-mit.

“I spoke with most neighboursand I have been able to addressmost of their concerns,” Lund-gren told council at the July 19public hearing. “I’ve been run-

ning daycare centres for six yearsnow and both of my current onesare located next to adult-orient-ed housing and I’ve never had anoise complaint.”

In December, Fairfield IslandPreschool’s owner applied tothe city to expand that opera-tion from 16 to 32 children, butcouncil denied the applicationsaying the business had become“an intrusion in the neighbour-hood” and that traffic and park-ing issues were too much.

In the case approved last week, the support from the neighbour-hood was the difference, accord-ing to Coun. Diane Janzen.

“The operator here had donea pretty good job of recognizingwhat some of the concerns areand working to deal with them,”she said. “Sometimes when youare looking at something of thisnature you want to see how farhave folks gone to make thingswork in the neighbourhood.”

Peter Soth, neighbour and par-ent of a child at Lundgren’s day-care, said kids are taken care ofin the facility and it is importantfor Chilliwack.

“It’s very hard to find good day-care in this town,” he said. “Whatshe presents is a very good day-care.”

The health inspector reportedLundgren had a“high assessmentrating” as a daycare managerand the facility will be reviewedby the Ministry of Health uponsubmission of a business licenceapplication.

Political pundits typicallyrefer to the summer monthsas the “barbecue season.”

This is in reference to politicianstouring the land and taking theirturns flipping burgers and wienersat fairs, rodeos, picnics and othercommunity gatherings where theyattempt to press the flesh andshow how down to earth they are.

Almost every serving politicianof every party engages in thislong-established summertimeritual. But the combination ofbarbecue and politicking is hardlya Canadian original. It’s as Ameri-can a tradition as…well, as barbe-cue. George Washington wrote ofhis attendance at barbecue eventsas early as 1770. Horseshoes werethrown, pigs were slow smoked, and there was music and dancing. It was the most efficient way tomeet people and make connec-tions. In 1793, Washington’s teamserved a 500-pound barbecued oxat the nation’s capital. Support-ers, detractors and the undecidedlined up for blocks.

Barbecue has long been anessential component of U.S. elec-tioneering. Presidents, senators, governors and a host of othershave long relied on the lure of slowcooked ribs and hickory smoke inthe air to rally the base.

Lyndon Baines Johnson was sofamous for having hosted so manystar-spangled barbecues that his

personal BBQ caterer published“The LBJ Barbecue Cookbook.”

Jimmy Carter brought a goodold-fashioned Georgia whole hogbarbecue with him wherever thecampaign trail led.

Both the Bush Presidents hostedannual congressional barbecuesduring their terms in office. WhenGeorge W. was first elected to theWhite House, he hired the ownerof Cooper’s Old Time Pit Barbecuein Texas to cater his victory cel-ebration.

When Barack Obama wascampaigning to be the Democratnominee, his team made a point ofdropping in on some of the mostrevered BBQ joints in the country, including one of my very favou-rites—The IronWorks in Austin.

Barbecue, politics and cam-paigning have essentially beeninseparable for hundreds of yearsand it’s a tradition and strategythat has reaped many a dividend.

Canadian political strategistshave long looked to the U.S. forcampaign lessons; though somewill defiantly deny doing so. The

summertime barbecue—meetand greet is one of the very besttricks of the trade so it stands toreason it has been a fixture in thiscountry for many years.

So I ask, why not do it up prop-er? Instead of flipping pre-made,frozen patties with the artificialgrill marks painted on them, why not serve up real barbecue?I’ve been to my share of politicalevents in the summer monthsthat indicated the word “BBQ” onthe invite. But thus far, I have yetto see anything even resemblingactual barbecue. Sorry folks, butprocessed patties and hot dogsaren’t going to do the trick.

There is something almostsacrilegious about taking such atime-honored tradition and turn-ing it into a junk food parody ofwhat it should be.

The political-barbecue con-nection is all about showing howreal and genuine the candidate is.These events are an opportunityto meet the person, not the manu-factured, public image. So if genu-ineness is what these gatheringsare after, let’s have some genuinebarbecue served up. Ribs, brisket, sausage coils and pulled porksandwiches.

Or should that be pulled pork-barrel sandwiches?

Dreamsachievedat Games

Dream.Challenge.Achieve.Not every one of the young athletes who

showed their best form in the B.C. Sum-mer Games held in Langley last weekendwill go on to become Olympians and Para-lympians.

Some may never again be involved intournaments outside their home towns.

But they were all able to dream. Theywere able to dream of being good enoughto join some of B.C.’s top rising stars onthe track, in the pool, on the field, on thecourt . . . and if they never have an oppor-tunity to compete at this level again, theystill realized those dreams on the week-end.

Not every one of those young athletescame away from the weekend’s chal-lenges with a gold medal. Some left withno medals at all—just a lifetime worth ofmemories that they faced their challenges, met them head on, and did the best theycould do.

For some, meeting the challenge was thebiggest thing they’ve done so far in theiryoung lives—and for all, it was likely agrowing experience.

Every one achieved something. For some, their achievements on the

weekend put them onto a road leading togreater competition, perhaps at nationalor international levels.

But for all of these youngsters, the B.C.Summer Games help them achieve some-thing bigger than the sports they compet-ed in—something bigger than the gamesthemselves. From this time forward, theywill know that they can dream, that theycan face a challenge, and that by doing so,they can achieve their dreams.

Editor:Many people are con-

cerned over the HST buthave they looked at theeco fees our government issneaking in? I recently con-sidered purchasing a 32-inchTV at $347.99. When I askedwhat the full price would beI noticed an eco fee of $31.75plus the HST. After doing aquick check I realized theHST had been charged onboth the TV and the eco fee.The tax on the eco fee alonewas $3.81. At this point Idecided to check this outbefore spending my money.

I contacted several peoplein government and went onthe Ministry of Environmentwebsite in my search forinformation. I have not beenable to find a comprehensivelist of the items on which thefee is being charged or theamount being charged. Thebest list I could find had beenput out by Dell Computersand it contained a list of 15electronic products and theassociated fees. What I didfind was that all the govern-ment publications indicatedthe fee was not a tax but a feefor service. When is a tax nota tax?

In the course of mysearching I found that anew eco fee, effective July 1,2010, has been introducedon light bulbs, includingthe new twisty ones we aresupposed to use. We can allexpect to pay a bit more for

our light bulbs now.Where are the good inves-

tigative reporters when youneed them? What is this fee;what does it apply to; howmuch is it on the variousitems; who does the moneygo to; what is it used for andis it effective? I gather it istied in with our recyclingprogram but after seeingthe giant fiasco regardingeco fees in Ontario I thinkwe need to take a close lookhere in B.C.

Site C dam islong overdueEditor:

I cannot understand whysome people are opposedto an important project likethe Site C dam. It’s been partof the energy plans of this

province for more than halfa century. If Site C had beenbuilt back in the 1980s as itwas supposed to have beenwe wouldn’t find ourselvesin the current situation ofhaving to import electricityfrom Alberta and its coal-burning, climate-changingpower plants.

Even if British Columbiadidn’t need the power fromSite C back in the 1980s, SiteC should have been builtanyways as an investment inthe province’s future know-ing that we would one dayneed the power.

And think about all thoseyears in which we couldhave been exporting anypower from Site C that wedidn’t need for our own use.Billions of dollars could haveflowed into this provincethat could have gone towardhealthcare, education andkeeping our provincial debt

down until we needed thepower.

It’s time to get on withbuilding this long overdueproject. Time waits for noone, and the time wastedin not getting on with thisproject has been a real lossfor the British Columbiaeconomy and a loss for Brit-ish Columbia’s environmentconsidering the amount ofcarbon emitting power we’renow importing.

Taken for a ridewith gas pricesEditor:

The Chilliwack gas pricehas been in the paper of lateand deservingly so.

Generally one might feeltaken for a ride every timeyou need to fuel up. We arenow paying $1.10 to $1.14/L.The British Columbia aver-age at this time is $1.10/Land is the second highest inCanada behind NorthwestTerritories at $1.16/L.

Interesting to see thatOntario’s average per litre is1.03 after having added HSTof eight cents per litre on theJuly 1. If the public is dis-satisfied with this scenarioit’s hard to blame them. Thegas information is availablewww.gasbuddy.com.

difficulty stepping off the curb.To make matters worse, her purse

fell to the ground unnoticed duringthe ordeal and was later recoveredby a hospital employee from a groupof teenagers who left the purse afterrunning away with the money that wasin it.

“People are waiting around therewatching for things like that,” saidKulesh.

She wrote an e-mail to hospitaladministration describing the ordealand thanking hospital staf f forrecovering the purse, but there is stillno ramp into the parking lot.

A c c o r d i n g t o E l s i e D u n c a n ,clinical co-ordinator for the hospitalredevelopment project, the problem ispeople are using the wrong parking lot.

If they park in the visitor parkinglot around the side of the building byMary Street, patients can reach thetemporary ER entrance by using threeramps on a route that crosses theambulance parking lot.

“It may not be as clear as it should

be, but there is a way that you can doit,” said Duncan.

She said installing a ramp in thedoctors’ lot was not feasible becausethe lot is too small and cars would backover the ramp.

But the trek from the visitor parkinglot is too much for ailing seniors usingwalkers, according to Kulesh.

Even when patients use wheelchairs, the route from the visitors’ lot to thetemporary ER entrance is difficult, especially when patients are beinghelped by other seniors who have tocover the distance a number of timesto get one of the hospital’s loanerwheelchairs.

Doug May, who had to check his90-year-old sister into the emergencyroom last Tuesday, opted to stop in thedoctors’ lot instead and needed helpgetting his sister into a wheelchair onthe curb.

“I understood this was closer tothe emergency department,” he said, surprised not to find a ramp closer by.

Kulesh wonders why the hospitalhasn’t eliminated one of the stalls inthe doctors’ lot to make way for a ramp, but Duncan said that idea was rejectedearly on because parking at the hospitalis scarce and because loading andunloading patients in the small lot wasdeemed unsafe.

“The minute you get cars and peoplein a small space like that, it’s not safe,”said Duncan.

With seniors like Kulesh and Dayopting to use the lot anyway to avoid along trek from the main entrance or thevisitor parking lot, however, that hazardnow appears compounded by the lackof a ramp.

Despite this, Duncan said the entrancehas elicited few complaints since beingopened in April and added concernscan be directed to site administratorElma Pauls at 604-795-4141.

The temporary ER entrance will bein place until renovations are completein September when it will be convertedinto a staff entrance.

Fondest memories of Empire Stadiumprove to be a winner for Delta man

Here is Ray Crawford’s winning submission in our Memories of Empire

Stadium contest:

I have many fond memories of Empire Stadium — unfortunately

my fondest memory, my first time at Empire Stadium, has nothing to

do with the BC Lions. The first time I set foot inside Empire Stadium was

on Saturday, Nov. 26, 1960 for the 48th annual Grey Cup Game. In 1960 I

was 10 years old and this was the first time that I attended a professional

football game. It was the first time that I attended any professional game.

The Ottawa Rough Riders defeated Edmonton 16 to 6 to become the

1960 Grey Cup Champions and Ron Stewart of the Ottawa Rough Riders

was the Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Player.

Before the game there was the Grey Cup parade. My dad was a sea

cadet officer with the Captain Vancouver Corp in Stanley Park and the

cadets were part of the parade. I was seated in an area with some friends

of my Dad’s and watched the parade. As I watched the parade it was like

waiting for Christmas morning; I couldn’t wait to get to Empire

Stadium. Finally the parade ended and my dad, still in uniform,

got me and we went to the game.

Arriving at Empire Stadium the sounds, smells, and the

entire goings-on put my head on a pivot, for I did not want to

miss any of this first-time experience. We waited in line with

our tickets and then waited in line at the concession stands.

Now well prepared with hotdogs, Coke and peanuts, we

walked through the small tunnel entrance and for the

first time I could see Empire Stadium from the inside.

Both teams were on the field warming up. Punters were

punting, kickers were kicking field goals, quarterbacks

were throwing to receivers, linemen were going over their blocking

techniques and there was just so much to watch at one time. I had been

to a three-ring circus but this was so much more.

My dad pointed out Vic Chapman. When you are a child you may

sometimes refer to parent’s close friend as Aunty or Uncle, even though

he or she is not a blood relative. Vic Chapman was my Uncle Vic. He

had a girlfriend who worked at the Bay Theatre on Denman Street and

she was friends with my mother. Many times Uncle Vic had been at our

house. Dad reminded me that it was Uncle Vic who had given us the

tickets to the game. As Uncle Vic was practising close to the track, my dad

encouraged me to go down to the rail and wave to him. I went down the

stairs, zigzagging between the people trying to get to their seats and

as I got to the rail I called out to Uncle Vic. How he heard me above all

the noise I do not know. He ran over and asked me how the seats were.

Someone then called to Uncle Vic and he said he had to go as the two

teams disappeared into their dressing rooms.

I returned to my seat and my dad encouraged me to eat my hotdog

as we sat waiting for the game to begin. Then the announcer asked for

our attention and there was such a fanfare going on before the game.

Introductions of the many important people that were there that day, the

introductions of the starting lineups for both sides, the flip of the coin for

the kickoff, the V.I.P. kickoff and then finally the kickoff and the game was

on. My eyes never left the field. The action was a continuous assault

upon both my vision and hearing. Hearing the pro-Edmonton, crowd

gasp as the ball was thrown to a receiver and then a quiet hush as the

ball fell through his fingertips. The grunts and the groans, the hits and

the misses, the running, the catching, the kicking, the punting football

now had me mesmerized. I loved everything about it. I wanted nothing

to change. To me, football had to be played in this way in this stadium.

Over the years there were many more times that I visited Empire

Stadium. I watched the Lions roar; there were concerts, and track and field

events. As a high school footballplayer I played at EmpireStadium against

the Notre Dame Jugglers in the 1969 Shrine Bowl. Unfortunately we lost.

I believe that we were the last game on real grass at Empire Stadium. A

few years later as a player for the Vancouver Meralomas, I returned to

Empire Stadium to play in the Junior Big Four Football League. At that

time the field was artificial turf and when you hit the ground it really hurt.

It was quite something for me to play for the Vancouver Meralomas. For it

was with the Meralomas that my Uncle Vic had played part of his football

career. His picture still hangs on the clubhouse wall in the president’s

room.

Yes, Empire Stadium holds many memories for me. I was sad the day

they tore it down. But now I rejoice at the realization that I will take my 22-

year-old, son to a Lions game at Empire Stadium. It won’t be like 1960, it

won’t be for the Grey Cup, but it will be the continuation of a tradition. My

dad took me to my first game at Empire Stadium and even though I have

taken my son to the dome, he has yet to experience Empire Stadium: the

sounds,thesmells, thewholeexperienceofwatchingfootballoutdoors in

agrandoldstadium.Lifegoesonandshall foreverchange,butsometimes

I think they should just leave some things alone. Empire Stadium should

remain and be used as a sports and entertainment complex at least until

my son can take his son to Empire (Stadium) Field.

the Lions’ July 10 home opener against Saskatchewan at Empire Field.

tour along the sidelines. Photo by Sharon Doucette/The Now

Rebels double Huskers

The Chilliwack Huskers’season got off to a rocky

start as the locals droppedtheir first B.C. Football Con-ference game of the season55-27 Saturday to the Victo-ria Rebels at Exhibition Sta-dium.

The Rebels scored earlyand often and took a 34-7lead into halftime. Chilli-wack rallied in the secondhalf , but couldn’t drawany closer despite the bestefforts of pivot ClaytonKroeker. With the Huskers’runners unable to makeany headway, the offencet u r n e d t o t h e a i r a n dKroeker started to connectwith receivers, finishing thegame having completed 19of 35 passes for 283 yardsand four touchdowns.

Ben Skerrett led all Chilli-wack receivers, catchingthree passes for 74 yardsand one touchdown. Dylan

Belair made five catches, including one for a touch-down and Corey Rollingsand Nick Diguistini also hadtouchdowns.

Huskers coach Luke Ache-son said that while there isstill work to do, the gamewas an improvement froman exhibition thrashing theprevious week.

“I was happy with somea s p e c t s [ o f Sa t u rd a y ’sgame] and there are somethings we’d definitely like toimprove on,” Acheson toldthe Times.

A c h e s o n s p e c i f i c a l l ypointed to the aforemen-tioned running game, whichmanaged only 18 yards onseven carries.

“I think we need to workon some of the timing andblocking issues.”

He said the Huskers’inability to run the ballallowed the Rebels to take

over the ball in prime scor-ing areas.

“We put our defence insome bad positions and theygot some scores from that,”said Acheson. The defence, and special teams, mean-while, has to play more con-sistently he said.

“We need to eliminate thebig play. Other than that, Ithink we did pretty well.”

Indeed, the score wasmore lopsided than the playmay have indicated, withthe Rebels getting sevenpoints from a 65-yard inter-ception return and a shortrun following a 65-yardpunt return, both in thethird quarter.

“Hats off to Victoria,” saidAcheson. “They came in andplayed a pretty good game.”

Next up for the Huskersare back-to-back nationaljunior football championsVancouver Island Raiders, who beat the South SurreyRams 37-13 on Saturday. The teams square off atCaledonia Park in Nanaimoon Saturday at 4 p.m.

Three Chilliwack athletes have returnedto the Fraser Valley with some newbling after taking part in the Special

Lisa Newell won three weightlifing goldmedals, Matt MacKay won a pair of sil-ver, also in weightlifting, and Ryan Kuesterbrought home a gold and two silver in swim-ming to cap a successful week.

“I felt like in the real Olympics; it was thatgood,” said Newell, after returning to Chilli-wack.

The trio had won the right to compete bydoing well last year at the provincial games.

MacKay, 28, told the Times that he enjoyed

both the competition and meeting his fellowathletes.

“It is fun,” he said. “I knew everybody.”The 144-pound strongman benched 200

pounds, and can deadlift 250 pounds andtrains twice a week. He and his teammateswill learn later whether they have quali-fied to compete at next year’s World SpecialOlympics in Greece, a prospect that excitedboth MacKay and Newell.

Special Olympics co-ordinator JacquesLemieux said the results were a credit toboth the athletes and the coaches.

“They’ve been working on it for 48 weeksnow,” he said. “They’ve been very dedicat-ed.”

Senior needs senior carpenter’s helpThe BC SPCA is once again

reminding pet guardiansto play it cool with their ani-mals this year, and offeringtips on how to keep pets safe.

First off, don’t leave yourpet in the car. Even a carparked in the shade can posea threat to your pet if the sunshould change direction andheat up the car’s interior.

The temperature insidea parked car at this timeof year—even one that’s in

the shade—can climb wellabove 38 degrees Celsius(100 degrees Fahrenheit).Dogs can withstand hightemperatures for only a veryshort time—usually just 10minutes—before sufferingirreparable brain damage ordeath.

Signs of heatstroke in pets:exaggerated panting; rapidor erratic pulse; salivation;weakness and muscle trem-ors; lack of co-ordination.
