By Jamie Ward It all started in sixth grade when Mario Formichelli made a layup against Beachwood, a basket that won West Geauga the championship. It was that game, that sea- son, that the seniors recalled in a locker room at Lakeside High School. The Wolverines season ended last week with a 54-50 loss to University Schools. "Remember when he fell through the bleachers?" one teammate said of Formichelli, who now stands six feet eight inches. "We weren't the best team, but we were together," remem- bered Devon Zurcher. "Even over all the odds, we were a low seed, and we pulled it out as a team. That's the first time I knew something was special." "I'll always cherish those memories," said senior Gino Iacampo, still reeling from a shot to the nose — or head, he couldn't remember — that side- lined him for most of the second half. "That was where it all started." These seniors, as a group, have worked with Head Coach John Cardiero for four seasons to make the Wolverines' basket- ball program one of the best in the Chagrin Valley Conference. Their 32-14 record over the past two seasons is a testament to that. "I probably spend more time with them than their parents do," Cardiero said after the By Diane Ryder Re-purposing is not just for trendy reality TV competition shows. It’s also a creative way for a local township to save money by converting something one department no longer wants into something another depart- ment needs. Working together, Chester Township Fire Chief John Wargelin and Road Department Superintendent Rob Pealer have turned a worn out tanker fire truck into a brine spreader for the road department. Pealer estimated a new brine truck, used to pre-treat roads before a snow or ice storm, would cost up to $300,000, but the conversion of the old truck cost the township about $6,000. The fire department recently replaced the old truck with a new tanker that cost $367,000, and the old truck, built in 1979 and restored in 1991, could have been sold for $8,000-$10,000, Wargelin said. “We knew what we could get for it wasn’t much, so I was talking to Rob and asked if he had a use for it, maybe for spreading water on dirt roads,” Wargelin said. “His eyes lit up. He told me he had been looking at getting a brine truck system, but the cost was prohibitive.” The two discussed details about the old tanker, including the fact that it was mechanically sound, had a front mounted pump and a stainless steel tank. “From there, the idea just took off,” the chief said. Brine spreaders have been used for the last several years by the Ohio Department of Transportation and large munic- ipalities to pre-treat roadways before a storm, Pealer said. The brine helps prevent snow and ice from sticking to the road surface. “We get a salt savings and it can work quicker and is more efficient, reducing man hours,” Pealer explained. “It can especially help with trou- ble spots during ice storms. It’s a great tool in our snow fight- ing arsenal.” One ton of road salt can yield 1,000 gallons of brine. Pre- treatment uses about 40 to 50 gallons of brine per mile, he said, adding he is now looking into finding a brine processor that will save mixing time. “It’s already made a big dif- ference, especially in places like the S-curve on Wilson Mills Road,” Pealer said. “We pre- treat three or four hours before Your Community Newspaper Since 1967 8389 Mayfield Rd. “We have three bids here forhanging baskets that we normal-ly put up every year,” TrusteeMike Joyce said. The lowest bid, for $1,197

plus $10 per basket for anoptional liner, came from RockFarm and Gardens of Kirtland,Joyce announced.Other bids were for

$1,662.50, including liners, fromChester-based Bremec Green-house, and for $1,890 plus linersfrom Abate Florist andGreenhouse, another growerbased in the township.“My feeling is to stay local

and close,” Joyce said.Trustee Ken Radtke said the

lowest bid, by $273, came fromRock Farm and Garden, whichhe said is “relatively local.”“My inclination is to go with

Bremec, which we normally do,”Joyce said. Radtke said there is a 22.8

percent difference in price.“I’m looking at the cost to

taxpayers,” he said, then askedJoyce if there was a critical timeperiod.“No; we can table it till we

have an uneven number in ourforum,” Joyce said. The issue came up again

later, during the public commentportion of the meeting.

“Did you even approachAbate? They’re local,” residentDal Lanese asked.“They were one of the

quotes,” Fiscal Officer MikeStark replied. The hanging baskets were

originally done by the Chester-land Chamber of Commerce,”former Trustee Ron Cotmansaid. “They used Rock’s Farm

once, then the trustees took itover, but Rock’s Farm continuedto be the vendor,” he said.Cotman said current trustees

switched to buying from Bre-mec’s at some point.“There was never an action

by this board to get competitivebids. Obviously Rock’s was thelowest,” he said. “I just wantedto recount the history.”Resident Kurt Feigle added,

“Rock’s is not that far over thetownship line.”Joyce said he likes to “take

care of the residents of Chesterwhen I can.”Then the township fire

department should buy theirammunition from the local gunstore and the township shouldnot buy their office suppliesfrom out-of-town supplier

Staples, Feigle said.“I’m very much in favor of

using local businesses as long asthey’re competitive,” Cotmansaid. “I have an even strongerallegiance to our taxpayers.”In other business, trustees

approved authorizing theGeauga County Prosecutor’sOffice to pursue filing a com-plaint regarding a MayfieldRoad property Radtke said wasin violation of setback require-ments in the zoning code. They approved paying up to

$15,000 to Cleveland-basedattorneys Zashin and Rich fortheir role in union negotiations.Trustees also approved reim-

bursing Munson TownshipZoning Inspector Tim Kearnsfor his mileage and time to trav-el to Columbus and give testi-mony before the Ohio Depart-ment of Commerce for whattownship officials said was adeceptive sign concerning thezoning of a subdivision.“It may have misled people

that wanted to bid on the prop-erty,” Joyce said.Kearns had served the town-

ship briefly as interim zoninginspector when the issue wasaddressed, Joyce said.

beyond the arc.Formichelli blocks shots and

finishes in the post. And Bidar, as the point

guard, leads the team in scoring. His name is listed first on oppo-nents' scouting lists.West Geauga led most of the

night against the Preppers. Thelow-scoring game, though, stayed close."I thought it was well-

played," Rabe said. "Nobodytook the lead very much. I real-ly thought we were going to pullthrough at the end."Led by Sam Bentz and

De'Andre Austin, the Prepperstrailed most of the fourth quar-ter. Trailing by six, Universitytook a timeout with 2:48 left. But University grabbed a 51-50lead with 5.7 seconds to play."We gave them all we

could," Zurcher said. "At theend stuff didn't fall our way. Wecouldn't do anything about."Zurcher is known for wear-

ing long sleeves when he plays,an unusual choice."I have to do something

new," he said. "I have to be

remembered for something. I'mnot a 6-8 kid who can dunk. I'ma 5-9 kid who works hard andwears long sleeves."Bidar, with a cut, swollen

right cheek, took the loss thehardest."I didn't have a great game

tonight," he said. "I didn't havemy best game. I turned it overtoo much, came up short attimes. I'll take the blame for thisone."He added: "It's tough

because I feel like I ended all ofthese seniors' careers."Bidar, though, was the only

one who felt that way."It was a game of runs, it

went back and forth," Cardierosaid. "I'm walking out of heresad, but I'm proud of my kids, the way they played.""We're all like brothers,"

Rabe said. "I'm going to stay intouch with all of these guys.""They always tell you that

your high school years go by sofast; you don't know it until it'sgone," Formichelli said. "So Ijust think, over the years we hada great coaching staff. And Iwork for them."West Geauga finished the

season at 16-8. For re-establish-ing the program, Iacampo wasproud of this class."It was troubling when we

came here, and we reallybrought it back up," he said. Both Hiram College and the

College of Wooster talked withBidar after the game, as the col-lege courting continues. Rabeplans to attend a prep schoolbefore going the Coast Guard, where he hopes to play basket-ball. Others remain undecided."I'd rather lose with these

guys," Bidar said, "than win astate championship with some-one else."

a storm and it starts workingimmediately. It breaks the bondbetween the ice and the road.”Wargelin said the fire

department’s new tanker holds33 percent more water, whichsaves precious time when fight-ing a fire in a rural area with nohydrants.“Out here, water is a big

issue,” Wargelin said. “A biggertank saves us time and gives usa quick hit on a fire.”Tanker trucks usually sit on

the road in a line, with a longhose delivering the water to thefire. As each tanker empties, it

leaves the line and another fulltanker takes its place as itreturns to a water source, such asa pond, to re-fill, the chief said.“That’s why you see tankers

from so many different depart-ments lined up on the road at afire,” he explained. The chief said the re-purpos-

ing project benefits both town-ship departments.

“It’s a win-win situation forus and for the taxpayers,”Wargelin said.The re-purposing process

took about three weeks, work-ing with a representative fromCleveland Plastics.“I met them at a snow and ice

seminar, and had heard of theidea from other communities,”Pealer said. “It all kind of felltogether. This is the first projectof its kind in the area as far as weknow. It is recycling, re-utilizingand sharing between depart-ments.”He added, “I can’t thank

John enough for offering this tous. We can make the roads saferso that they can get to a fire.Anything we can do to makethe township safer, we’ll do.”Both officials think the suc-

cess of this project will lead toother creative ideas for recy-cling other worn equipment, such as turning an old rescuesquad vehicle into a snow plow.“This could be something

that other communities coulddo,” Wargelin said. “It could goa long way to save tax dollars.”
