“Ejection Mechanisms of Charged Macromolecules

from Liquid Droplets”

Liquid droplets, that contain excess charge, are ubiquitous in aerosols found in nature and jets produced in electrospray ionization (ESI) methods. ESI has been extensively employed in deposition methods for coating of surfaces, in electrospray mass spectrometry for the chemical analysis mainly of biological macromolecules, and in other spraying technologies such as ink-jet printing and spraying of pesticides. Critical questions in the ESI applications is how the dissolved species emerge from the droplets and how the mechanism of ejection determines the charge state of a macromolecule. Classification of the ejection mechanisms of charged macromolecules from liquid droplets will be presented as it was determined by combination of molecular simulations and analytical theory. Also, we will discuss how the ejection mechanism is related to the charge state of the macromolecule. The simulations reveal new mechanisms of macromolecular ion evaporation that differ from the conventional charge residue and ion evaporation mechanisms. (See References, over)

Dr. Thian Yew Gan, U of A professor and DAAD Research Ambassador (2013-14) will be presenting on November 14 in Lecture Theatre ETL E1-007 at 5 pm. Each year, over 20,000 foreigners (students, professionals and scholars) receive financial support from German funding organizations such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD, Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), Alexander von Humbolt Foundation (AvH), German Research Foundation (DFG), Max Planck Society (MPG), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG), Helmholtz Association and Leibniz Association, to study and to conduct collaborative research with German researchers/scientists/professors at universities and research institutions across Germany. This seminar will first give a general overview of higher education and research in Germany, which is Europe’s leading economy, and one of the world’s leading nations in scientific research and technology. Then, information will be provided on the opportunity for students of North America (Canada and USA) to advance their academic career via study visits or seminars, summer courses, internships, or research projects at graduate schools of Germany, and supported through scholarships, fellowships, research grants or work contracts, for durations ranging from several days to several years.
