This course requires college-level reading and writing skills. Research indicates that you are most likely to succeed if you have already taken prerequisites to the course. They are CHEM 1411; must be placed into college-level reading (or take GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into MATH 0312 (or higher) and be placed into college-level writing (or take ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite).

Please carefully read and consider the repeater policy in the HCCS Student Handbook. Eagle Online Canvas Learning Management System This course will use Eagle Online Canvas for communication, instruction and assignments, including exams. HCCS Open Lab locations may be used to access the Internet and Eagle Online Canvas or you may use your own computer. It is recommended that you USE FIREFOX OR CHROME AS YOUR BROWSER. On Canvas, course notes and lecture videos along with practice exams will be available. Additionally, through the instructor’s website, www.chemistrybytes.com, you may access some general chemistry I material for review, if necessary since that content is a necessary foundation to the CHEM 1412. Lecture, labs, written assignments, and exams will all be in person. Canvas: Eagle Online Canvas https://eagleonline.hccs.edu/login/ldap. Log in directions for Eagle Online appear on the page itself. Your username is your “W” number used for registration purposes. For technical issues, please call 713-718-2000 . It is the student’s responsibility to log onto the Eagle Online on a regular basis (at least 2x/week) to check for announcements, access course materials, and check email. This is also considered by the College a form of attendance as well as participation in the course. Additionally, students should confirm their correct email address is linked to Eagle Online so that they may send AND receive correspondence from the instructor.

It is highly recommended to download instructional materials well in advance in the case of technical issues so that you are always prepared for class. You may also contact the instructor for material in the event that your Eagle Online access is intermittently restricted due to technical or enrollment issues. Students who no longer appear on the class roster because they have been dropped (for lack of attendance, non-payment, financial aid issues, Etc.) will not have access to Canvas or be able to complete assignments/earn grades.

Course Overview for CHEM 1412 This course is intended for students majoring in one of the physical sciences or life sciences, engineering, or for students who are pursuing pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or other health programs. The course is also beneficial to students who are preparing themselves for higher level science courses in their respective curricula.

Continuation of CHEM 1411. Topics include solutions, chemical kinetics, equilibrium and equilibrium phenomena in aqueous solution, acids and bases, pH, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. This course satisfies the Life and Physical Sciences or Component Area Option of the HCC core.

Core Curriculum Objectives (CCOs) for all CHEM Core Courses CHEM 1412 satisfies the chemistry requirement in the HCCS core curriculum. The HCCS Chemistry Discipline Committee has specified that the course address the following core objectives:

1. Demonstrate basic mastery of chemistry by writing formula and equations for chemical reactions, performing chemical calculations and recognizing the application of chemistry in our daily lives 2. Demonstrate a mastery of introductory and intermediate level chemistry to

Demonstrate a mastery of General and Organic Chemistry in preparation for allied and professional health programs and engineering 4. Conduct laboratory experiments by making measurements, performing chemical reactions and analyzing the results in a group or individual setting.

Distinguish between the different ways of measuring concentrations of solutions, and relate concentration to the colligative properties of solutions. 1.1 Determine if two compounds will mix to form a solution or not based on their structures. 1.2 Given the mass of a solute and the volume of a solution or the mass of the solvent, calculate the relevant concentration (molarity, molality, percent concentration, mole fraction, or ppm). Convert a given concentration from one concentration unit to another. 1.3 Relate the concentration of solutions to their colligative properties. 1.4 Determine the molecular weight of an unknown solute, given the value of a colligative property. SLO 2. Determine and analyze the rates of chemical reactions. 2.1 Determine the average rate and instantaneous rate of a reaction from concentration-time data. 2.2 Determine the order of a reaction with respect to each reactant and write the rate law for the reaction. Determine the value of the rate constant, k. 2.3 Write the integrated rate law of first and second order reactions and use the rate law to relate concentration of the reactant with reaction time, rate constant, and half-life. 2.4 Given different initial reactant concentrations and the respective initial rate of the reaction, determine the value of the exponents in the rate law and the value of the rate constant. 2.5 Relate the effect of temperature and activation energy to reaction rate using the Arrhenius equation. 2.6 Relate the rate law to the mechanism of the reaction and to the molecularity of the elementary reactions comprising the mechanism. SLO 3. Write equilibrium constant expressions for chemical reactions and calculate the value of the equilibrium constant and the concentration of reactants and products at equilibrium. 3.1 Write the equilibrium constant expression for homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions. 3.2 Given one or more concentrations at equilibrium, calculate the value of the equilibrium constant for the reaction and/or the equilibrium concentrations of the other substances in the reaction.

3.3 Given one or more initial concentrations, calculate the concentrations of the reactants and products at equilibrium and/or the value of the equilibrium constant, using the "ICE" table method. 3.4 From the value of the reaction quotient, Q, determine whether a reaction is at equilibrium, and if not, which direction the reaction will initially proceed in order to reach equilibrium. 3.5 Apply LeChâtelier’s Principle to determine the effects of changes in concentrations, temperature on compositions of equilibrium mixtures. SLO 4. Demonstrate proficiency in acid-base and solubility product calculations. 4.1 Know the three different definitions and principles of acids and bases (Arrhenius, Bronsted-Lowry, and Lewis). 4.2 Calculate [H+ ], [OH– ], pH, and pOH. 4.3 Use dissociation constants for weak monoprotic acids and bases to determine the pH of their aqueous solutions. 4.4 Differentiate between acidic, basic and neutral salts and determine the pH of aqueous solutions of salts. 4.5 Understand the common ion effect and its relevance to buffers; determine the pH of buffered solutions using the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. 4.6 Calculate the pH at various stages of titration curves for (i) strong acids & strong bases, (ii) weak acids & strong bases, (iii) strong acids & weak bases. 4.7 Write solubility product expressions and interconvert between the solubility constant, Ksp and concentrations of dissolved ions in saturated solutions of slightly soluble salts. 4.8 Given Ksp, determine whether precipitation will occur when two aqueous solutions of salts are mixed that react to form a sparingly soluble salt. SLO 5. Express the three laws of thermodynamics and interrelate the enthalpy, free energy and equilibrium constant for the reaction. 5.1 Express the concept of entropy and predict the sign of the entropy change for a given reaction. 5.2 Calculate the entropy change of a reaction using Hess's law or standard entropies. 5.3 From the Gibbs equation, relate and calculate the values of the entropy, enthalpy, free energy, and temperature of a reaction. 5.4 Relate and calculate the value of the equilibrium constant to the entropy, enthalpy, free energy and temperature of the reaction. SLO 6. Based on the principles of oxidation and reduction, balance oxidation-reduction reactions, calculate cell potentials of voltaic cells based on oxidation-reduction reactions, and make quantitative calculations based on electrolysis. 6.1 Determine the oxidation state of elements in compounds. 6.2 Based on changes in oxidation states, determine which substance in a reaction is oxidized and which is reduced. 6.3 Balance oxidation-reduction reactions in acidic and basic solution using the method of half-reactions. 6.4 Sketch voltaic and electrolytic cells, identifying the anode, cathode, anode compartment, cathode compartment, salt bridge, and direction of electron flow. 6.5 Calculate standard cell potentials from standard reduction potentials. 6.6 Rank reducing agents and oxidizing agents based on standard reduction potentials. 6.7 Determine non-standard cell potentials from standard cell potentials using the Nernst equation. 6.8 Interconvert between time, current, and masses of reactants and products in electrolysis processes.

SLO 7. Identify modes of radioactive decay, balance nuclear reactions, calculate energy changes associated with nuclear reactions, and relate quantities of radioactive elements with time based on the kinetics of nuclear processes. 7.1 Identify common modes of radioactive decay. 7.2 Write balanced nuclear reactions. 7.3 Differentiate between the different modes of decay and predict the likely mode of decay. 7.4 Interconvert between rates of nuclear decay, half-lives of radioactive nuclei, and amounts of radioactive nuclei. 7.5 Determine energy changes of nuclear reactions and stability of nuclei using Einstein’s equation. 7.6 Distinguish between subcritical, critical, and supercritical masses; contrast nuclear fission with nuclear fusion processes. 7.7 Identify the major components and principle of operation of nuclear reactors. SLO 8. Classify, name, and draw the structure of basic organic compounds; student can write chemical reactions of alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. 8.1 Given the structure, name alkanes using the IUPAC rules of nomenclature, and vice-versa. 8.2 Classify organic compounds based on the functional group present in their structures. 8.3 Given the structure, name alkenes and alkynes using the IUPAC rules of nomenclature, and vice-versa. 8.4 Optional if time permits. Write combustion and halogenation reactions of alkanes; write addition reactions of alkenes and alkynes. Student Success in CHEM 1412 As with any six-hour course, expect to spend at least 12 hours per week outside of class reading and studying the material. I will provide a schedule to help stay on track and keep up with the course timeline. Additional time will be required for written assignments. Successful completion of this course requires a combination of reading the textbook, attending “online” class, completing practice problems, and getting help when you need it. There is no short cut for success in this course; it requires reading, solving problems and studying the material using the course objectives as your guide. Instructor and Student Responsibilities As your Instructor, it is my responsibility to:

• Provide the grading scale and detailed grading formula explaining how student grades are to be derived

• Facilitate an effective learning environment through class activities, discussions, and lectures

• Provide a description of any special projects or assignments • Inform students of policies such as attendance, withdrawal, tardiness and make up • Provide the course outline and class calendar which will include a description of any

special projects or assignments • Arrange to meet with individual students before and after class as required

To be successful in this class, it is the student’s responsibility to:

• Attend “online” class and participate in class discussions and activities • Attend all lab sessions and come prepared

Exams and Assignments Exams and Make Up Policy: In all, we cover 9 chapters in this course, divided into 3 modules (exams). Coverage is listed in Course Calendar. In the course, there are three non-cumulative regular multiple choice exams w i t h b e tw e e n 3 5 - 4 5 e q u a l l y -w e i g h t e d q u e s t i o n s e a c h . Additionally, there is a m a n d a t o r y comprehensive final (more information below). All exams will be taken in person. You will need a scantron for each exam.

All exams times are set to two hours. Make-up exams will NOT be given, so please make every reasonable effort to take the exams on their scheduled dates. Note: The final exam may substitute or replace your lowest exam score, including a missed exam (grade zero). If you miss an exam for any reason, your final exam grade will substitute for the missed exam. This is allowed for only ONE exam. All other missed exams will result in a grade of zero. If you take all three exams, and score higher on the final, then the final replaces the lowest exam grade.

Graphing calculators are also not permitted during testing. Exams are to be taken by the student himself/herself without any collaboration with another individual or reference, written, electronic, or online. No communication, verbal, non-verbal, or electronic may be made. All cell phones and communication devices are prohibited. No bathroom breaks are permitted during testing unless as an ADA accommodation for in-class testing (please visit facilities prior to class). Graphing calculators are also not permitted during testing. Measures to establish academic honesty and adherence to these guidelines are to ensure fairness and maintaining standards of learning and assessment. The academic dishonesty policy will be strictly enforced.

Each student should arrive at the lab on time, with his or her lab manual and come prepared. A “Lab Supplement” has also been curated for you to help guide you through each lab. It is highly recommended that you reference that for preparation for lab and during lab as well as completion of your lab report. You will complete 8 labs in the course for a grade, all located in your lab manual, worth 10 points each. There will be a short prelab quiz prior to each lab except Exp 8 (a paper lab). The prelab quizzes will range in point value from 3-5 points with the remaining points coming from completion of the lab report. Quiz questions will be based on the lab material presented in the lab manual for each lab. Hence, studying the assigned lab prior to class is key. There will be a short quiz prior to wet labs. There are NO make-up quizzes so please be on time and in regular attendance. Paper labs or “dry-labs” are due at the beginning of class. Wet labs are due the same class period or the following class period as noted by the instructor or on the syllabus. Late assignments are not accepted. Each lab report must be completed individually, particularly dry labs—no copying. If you need help, I am here to help you so there is support, but you must acquire it right way. Students found to be copying or engaging in academic dishonesty on quizzes or reports will face penalties described in that section of the syllabus.

Safety Orientation: The first will be a mandatory safety orientation as safety is the TOP priority in lab. Should you miss the safety lab, it is your responsibility to complete a make up for safety before you can move forward with the class. Instructions are as follows: 1. Watch the safety video from the link on Canvas. 2. Print and complete the “Acknowledgment” of make up form to testify to having watched the video (the instructor may verify this with activity on your Canvas account) 3. Sign and complete the Safety Agreement from your lab manual. 4. Review the lab layout and safety equipment location with the instructor prior to your first lab upon return. 4. There will not be a make up for the safety quiz.

Safety Rules: All safety rules must be followed at all times while in lab. Safety goggles must be worn at ALL times while in the lab even if you’re done with your lab or just doing calculation . Students who continually fail to wear eye protection will be asked to leave the lab.

Students who fail to wear proper clothing (ie close-toed shoes) may not be permitted to attend lab for the day. It is recommended that you have an extra pair of shoes in your car or bag for such instances and that you wear clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. Listen to your instructor’s instructions on chemical waste disposal. Gloves will also be provided for students who wish to use them. If a student would like to purchase his/her own OSHA-approved goggles, lab coat/apron, they may do so as well.

Policy Regarding Making Up Missed Assignments No late assignments are accepted as most labs can be completed during the lab session itself; otherwise, with instructor permission, students may ask for additional time to complete a report and submit it at the beginning of the following class period or as stated in advance on the syllabus. No late submissions on dry labs. Since there is this generous window, no late work is accepted in fairness to other students. There is partial make up for Safety Orientation since it is a prerequisite lab. Thereafter you can make up one missed lab as designated and posted on Canvas. This lab will be posted on Canvas with a due date. There will be no further make ups thereafter. This lab grade will replace ONE zero for a missed lab. All other missed labs will be zeros (0).

Practice Problems: Homework is not a graded component of this course. Suggested problems from the back of each chapter are below (answers located in back of textbook). These are for your benefit. Participating in homework completion will help you reinforce the material and better enable you master the content. HW may be used as a bonus assignment as an additional incentive for iteration. If so, it will be announced in class and due on the corresponding exam day (ie module 1 problems due on exam 1 day).

Additionally, there are practice exams with solutions posted in multiple choice and short answer format to help you prepare for exams. CHEM 1412 Departmental Final Exam All students will be required to take a comprehensive departmental final exam. You will need a scantron for the final. All other written material will be provided to you. The departmental final exam consists of 35 multiple- choice and 6 short answer questions. Students must provide their own Scantron forms, which are available at HCCS bookstores. The instructor will provide resources on Canvas for preparation for the final exam. Students who are absent from the final exam without discussing their absence with the instructor in advance or within 24 hours afterward will receive a final exam grade of zero. Any student who does not take a makeup exam by the end of the following long semester will receive a final exam grade of zero and a course grade of F. Policy Regarding Making Up Missed Assignments In fairness to other students and because generous windows are given for assignment completion, no late assignments or exam extensions are accepted. There are no make up exams. See above, “Exams and Make Up Policy.” Due to time and space constraints and in fairness to all students, there are no make up labs, except for the mandatory safety orientation. One other missed lab may be made up as posted to Canvas and submitted by the due date listed. Bonus opportunities in the form of homework, however, will be provided to reward effort and allow students to earn extra points to improve student grades. Grades are NOT released via telephone or email or to classmates. Grades are discussed and distributed only in compliance with the Federal Education Rights and Policy Act (FERPA). Course Calendar Below is a guide to help keep you on track as you make your way through each module. You will be conducting self-guided studies with lots of resources online and my support. My best advice is “time and effort.” Give yourself enough time to cover and digest the material and spend enough time practicing it. Read through the notes, watch my lecture videos and/or read the textbook as well if you wish and if time allows (see what works for you). Practice as many problems as you can from the notes and textbook. Take the practice exam. Ask for help when you need it.

classroom activities • Collaborating with another student during a test without authority • Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting or soliciting in whole or part the

contents of an unadministered test • Bribing another person to obtain a test that is to be administered • Unauthorized talking during tests, assignments, and classroom activities • “Plagiarism” means using another person's words or ideas as one’s own without properly

citing where and from whom you obtained the original work. • “Collusion” means the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written

work submitted for credit. • Other actions may constitute scholastic dishonesty. This is not an exhaustive list. Academic dishonesty, as listed above, which includes but is not limited to collusion, plagiarism, copying any part of any assignment or exam, sharing exam information or communicating (verbal or otherwise) during an exam, or utilization/manipulation of unauthorized electronic devices during exams/assignments or exam reviews, will not be tolerated. Penalties can include a grade of "0" or "F" on the particular assignment, failure of the course, and/or disciplinary action as determined by the Student Code of Conduct and Discipline Procedures. If you are caught cheating, any of the above actions may be taken for ALL students involved. “Scholastic dishonesty”: includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. There is a Zero tolerance for any type of academic dishonesty. Attendance The instructor observes the HCC Attendance Policy in the Student Handbook. Attendance is noted and submitted to the College every class period or monitored online. Students who miss more than 12.5% of the course may be subject to drop. Regular attendance is highly encouraged not only because each class provides valuable information in chemistry and “house-keeping” information about the course, for which the student is responsible, but can impact grades as well. Students may elect to drop the class themselves. The last day for dropping the course according to the academic calendar is April 9. It is the student’s responsibility to drop if he/she wishes to do so. Drop dates and times should be confirmed by the student for various terms and forms of dropping (in person on campus or online). Students should also reference the Academic Calendar on the www.hccs.edu for other important dates. Student Conduct Students are expected to maintain cordial and professional conduct as would be expected of an academic environment and as laid out in the Student Handbook. Please arrive and leave class on time so as to cause little disruption and avoid missing important class information and/or assignments. Academic integrity is also considered to be a part of appropriate conduct. Every student as well as the professor has the right to work in a healthy learning environment based on mutual respect and adherence to rules. Conduct unbecoming of such an environment will not be tolerated. Electronic Device

• Use of Electronic Devices The use of electronic devices by students in the classroom is up to the discretion of the instructor. Any use of such devices for purposes other than student learning is strictly prohibited. If an instructor perceives such use as disruptive and/or inappropriate, the instructor has the right to terminate such use. If the behavior continues, the student may be subject to disciplinary action to include removal from the classroom or referral to the dean of student services…Per the HCCS Cell phone or electronic device use in class is NOT PERMITTED, particularly during testing/labs. It is understandable that a need arises to tend to personal or urgent matters, but that should not be habitual nor disruptive. A student may excuse themselves from class to tend to a pressing matter. However, cell phone use is otherwise not permitted in class. No communication or photographs may be taken during class either, of persons or course material (ie exams, keys, quizzes, etc.) using a device and no testing material may be removed from the class at any time. If students choose to use laptops or tablets (or other electronic device with wifi, cellular or communication capabilities including cell phones and watches), they should be for classroom-related purposes only and during times permitted. No video or audio recording is to take place..Recording devices of any kind are not permitted in class unless specified by an ADA accommodation. Students must obtain consent from an instructor in order to audio or video record any portion of classroom time. If a student is receiving an accommodation for a disability, the student may be required to sign a statement assuring that the recording is only for personal use and cannot be distributed. No graphing calculators are permitted on exams/quizzes. Cell phones are not calculators and will not be permitted to be used as use in the lab (for safety) or exams.
