Sept. Meeting

Beads of Courage is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide supportive arts-in-medicine programs to children, teens, and families coping with serious illness and the clinicians that care for them. Beads of Courage helps children around the world record, tell, and own their own stories, using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage and hope along their treatment journey. Woodturners around the country have been donating their time, talents, materials and more to create beautiful woodturned boxes to be given to Beads of Courage

members as a precious vessel to hold their Beads of Courage collection. Last year over 800 boxes were made by woodturners and donated to the program.

This year boxes will again be collected at the AAW national symposium and at the GAW symposium in Dalton for delivery to participating hospitals. Please commit to making one or more Beads of Courage boxes in time to donate at one of these symposia. If you can’t attend a symposium, bring your box to a club meeting so it can be delivered. The porcelain logo beads for the boxes are available from Wes Jones. The guidelines for making the boxes is attached.

DEMONSTRATOR: MIKE PEACEMike Peace enjoys every aspect of woodturning including demonstrating and teach-ing. He has demonstrated at the AAW symposium in Atlanta 2016 and Portland 2018, as well as regional symposia and many clubs in the Southeast. He has taught at the John C. Campbell Folk School.

Mike has published articles in various woodturning magazines. He has produced more than 400 woodturning videos on his YouTube channel.

Before retirement, Mike worked as a payroll software project manager. After active duty in the US Army, Mike stayed in the active reserve retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

More information can be found at his website mikepeacewoodturning.com

DEMONSTRATION: ADD PIZZAZZ WITH TEXTURING TOOLSEmbellish your turning projects using a variety of texturing tools, such as the Sorby or Crown Spiraling and Texturing tools, a knurling texturing tool, Dremel burr tool, and a chatter tool. Mike will demonstrate what texturing effects different tools can offer. It is amazing how easy it is to take a turned piece from a rather plain wood like Bradford Pear and turn it into something even more special in just moments. And it is fun seeing what you can do with these tools. Learn how easy it is to make your own chatter tool.

DEMONSTRATION: TURNING A BARK EDGE U SHAPED NATURAL EDGE BOWLKevin Wood demoed how to turn a winged bowl at the Aug. meeting. He emphasized that the blank should be green as possible to make removing the waste wood as smooth as possible. The lighting is critical to make the shadow wood as visible as possible. Last, but not least, tools most be shape. Several stops to touchup the edge is necessary. As the turning progressed tooling the final wall thickness kept pace with removing the enter wood. The wings become flexible as the waste wood is removed.

TIP OF THE MONTHDOVETAIL RECESS TOOL BY MIKE PEACE

If you use a four-jaw chuck in expansion mode to hold a bowl or platter, and your chuck has jaws that are dovetailed, you need to create a recess with an angled outer wall to accommodate the jaws (Photo 1).

You can use a variety of tools to cut this recess, such as a bedan or skew or even a commercial dovetail scraper, though most of these tools are

difficult to use with the tailstock in place. It can also be a challenge to consis-tently form the correct angle on the outside wall of your recess to match the dovetail jaws of your chuck. One solution is to make a customized scraper ground so that the handle clears the tailstock’s live center and the recess walls are automatically formed at the correct angle (Photo 2).

The dovetail angle on my chuck jaws is 10.5°, so I have ground the cutting surfaces on my recess tool to approximate that angle. Your chuck’s dovetail angles may be different. Ideally, you would cut your dovetail recess to match the jaws exactly, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. My tool cuts about an 8° recess. Too steep a dove-tail, like15°, is worse than one that is angled a bit less than ideal.

USING THE TOOL Holding the tool flat on the toolrest, guide the recess-bottom cutting edge (surface 1 in Photo 2) in first, then move the tool to the left to form the angled wall. With a little practice, you will be able to form flatbottomed recesses with your desired wall angle every time (Photo 3).

October 3-13 is the Georgia National Fair in Perry. 500K people attended last year, and 130 woodturned items were on display, which made it one of the biggest woodturning exhibits in Georgia. There are a number of ways you can participate in the Fair. Submit an exhibited piece: There is a $10 fee for each entry, but you will be eligible to win cash prizes, bragging rights, and you can sell your work with no commission. Last year, about $3500 in prizes were awarded. To submit an entry complete the on-line form (with a photo of piece) no later than Sept. 1 at this link: https://www.georgianationalfair.com/p/georgialiving/finearts. Then deliver your entry to the Fair on September 6 or 7. Attend the Fair: Avoid paying admission by signing up to work a 3 hour docent shift. In addition to 2 free tickets, you get a preferred parking spot. Docent signup link: https://bit.ly/2LIjU2Q. Volunteer to fund a special prize for the woodturning area. For more information contact the Georgia Living Department at [email protected] or (478) 988-6555. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] .
