DCs BITWe are starting to look at next years programme and the 2010 District Diary will soon be com-plete. I hope it will contain all County and District events so Groups and Units can plan their

own programme with these dates in mind. It is important that you give your members informa-

tion on the events for the year well in advance so parents can book the dats and members have

a year of Scouting to look forward to.

Gang Show enrolment evening for the 2010 show is on Wednesday, 4th November in the Dis-

trict Headquarters. This starts at 7.00 pm for Cubs and Scouts and 8.00 pm for the older mem-

bers of the cast. We are without our long term Director, Graham Phillips, who as you will all

be aware is now out County Commissioner. I would like to take this opportunity to record our

thanks to Graham for his twenty-six years as our Director and wish him well in his new role.Rest assured we have a full team next years show so the traditions of Warrington Gang Showwill continue. Show week will be from 16th to 20th March 2010.

Now some congratulations for some great achievements. Firstly to Warrington Orientals, our

Dragon Boat team who gained second place in this years Scout National Championships.

Secondly to the 30th Warrington Scouts and Amazon Explorer Unit who swept the board at

this years Chariot Races. They took the Scout and Explorer first place trophies with courserecord times in both events. Well done to you all.

The Explorer Section has chosen our District Charity for 2009/2010. It is to be the Help for

Heroes Fund. This is the charity that supports badly injured service men and women during

and after their recovery. A very necessary job a this time so I hope you will all support the

    cause.

Editorial: Summer is now behind us, although occasional sunshiny days are stilltricking us into leaving our warm jacket at home, but now its time for Halloween, Bonfire

night and then the magic of Christmas and the promise of a New Year to look forward to.

Those of you who will be experiencing a Winter Camp, lets hear from you pleasewith

pictures would be good. Would also like to hear from anyone who wants to comment on this

years Carol Service. Or any other Scout activity. Any input will appear in our next issue.

    On yer Bike, er Boat

Our Oriental Champions at the National Dragon Boating Cham-pionships:

This year, 50 scouts, explorer scouts, leaders and

parents from both Warrington East and

Warrington West Districts travelled down to

Marlow in styleby coach! Whilst we pushed

the boat out, metaphorically speaking, the

advantages were that everyone was together and

    it engendered better team spirit.

Both Junior and Mixed crews battled it out in

warm sunshine on the River Thames with the

Junior team defending their title of winners in

2008. Regrettably, it was not our year with the

Junior crew, whilst getting through to the Finals,

achieved, a very respectable second place behind

Wokingham Dragons but the Mixed team were

    knocked out in the semi-finals.

The following day we travelled over to

Swadlincote Ski and Snowboard Centre in

Derbyshire where there were plenty of laughs

and spills!! In the four hour we were there

which included lunch, there was the opportunity

of trying your hand at skiing or snowboarding,

tobogganing and snowtubing. A great time was

had by all and, thankfully, no broken bones! A

weary bunch of Scouts (and leaders) returned tothe drop off point in Lymm to be collected by

    parents.

You can be sure we will be going back to

Marlow again next year to try and win back the

Dragon Trophy. We are always looking fornew recruits, so please pass the word around

they are guaranteed of having a great time!!

    ANNOUNCEMENT:

I think everyone is aware of the current credit crunch situation. As Scouts we learn to be careful of possessionsand property and it therefore makes good economical sense that we hire out our Headquarters building and its fa-

cilities during periods when it is not in use by usthereby raising much needed revenue during this difficult time. Therefore, if you know any slimming clubs, dance groups, or other potential users, please promote our HQ.

The main room is 25x40 sq ft, there is a good size kitchen, several meeting rooms and good toilet and cloakroom-

facilities. All enquiries to the DC or EC.

    TSUNAMI SUMMER CAMP

The Tsunami Explorers had their summer camp at Kibblestone in Staffordshire in August. The promised pic-

tures didnt arrivebut, a summary account of the camp has been received along with the offering of a sonnetwritten by some budding poets amongst their motley crew.

    Tsunami Summer Experience

Plans went well, despite a leader ill before camp with

swine flu, and a cavalcade of car, landrover and

caravan, and a van full of kit left for Kibblestone on

8th August. The unit was fab and worked hard to set

up camp. There were ideas from some members to

make a swing, but this turned into a popular

    pioneering park.

Scarves and badges were swapped, and the Explorersleapt to the rescue to put out a fire which local yobs

    had started - well done!

Activities were fully engaged in and time spent sitting

around a fire. Leaders had fun with the Unit and all

spent considerable time laughing and spirits were high

despite a sickness bug which was being passed around

during camp. Asher, the guide dog pup, proved

    popular.

All in all, we have all had a great week. Thanks to all

involved, which includes Martin Hill who helped us

load the van on Friday afternoon.

    Summer Sonnet

Pretending to be deaf was just our game,

Also with water bombs and the sling shots,

Until bombing the Germans brought us to shame

But still finding time to wash all the pots.

Some of the outings were not much fun,

Some were better like Alton Towers

The monkeys made us want to cry and run

Water World fun left no time for showers

The illness spread from scholar to CherlowBut many more will be infected too.

We built our playground with traps for our foe

We think the illness came from the stew,

While G|reg tries to pul;l Welsh at the Diaco

But got rejected by the Welsh Duo.

where his lovely wife Erin is waiting for him. He must

carefully slip by the ferocious bonfire and the explod-

ing fireworks to reach Erin. And no, he cant cheat and

    go the underground route.

    Learn the Highwaymans Hitch

When you make the hitch, as shown above, you will find that end

A is secure when pulled, whereas if you pull end B, the hitch un-

ties. So, supposing you are in a tree and wish to climb down-you

make your highwaymans hitch round a bough, climb down ends

A, and when on the ground you pull end B and the rope comes

    down after you!

tion. These lights will illuminate the Hospice grounds during the Christmas period.

Your donation will; be acknowledged by a commemorative card showing the name of the

person to whom the light is dedicated. Each name will also appear in the Light up a

Life Book pf Honour, which will be displayed within the Hospice over the Christmasperiod.

    BLAKFOOT HIKE

The 2009 Blakfoot Hike was held in the Blackburn/Clitheroe area and was, as usual, well supported and a great

weekend. The weather was mixed but temperatures were kind and the scenery quite spectacular. Bowley

Campsite was the overnight Base Camp for the hikers and, unfortunately the period of heaviest rain and wind.

However, all came through and tired but happy faces received their awards and belt slides on the Sunday.

The only aspect of this years hike that caused some concern was the amount of scouts phoning in on the

emergency line because they were unsure of their position. In quite a lot of cases they practically had toreceive map and compass training over the phone so we could determine their position and put them back on

track. To find some did not know how to set their map, a basic requirement, was rather worrying and would

seem to indicate a lack of regular practise to refresh and reinforce map and compass work. There was also a

marked indication that many were unable to relate what they were looking at on their map to what they should

be seeing with their eyes. This would seem to indicate a lack of outdoor experience in walking on a map.

If this is because leaders do not have the time (or expertise) to train their scouts and then run regular outdoor

map and compass exercises, then Im sure arrangements could be made for District to run a few courses for

Scouts and, if wanted, for leaders. Primarily the safety of our Scouts is and must be paramount.

    RANDOM RAM-

BLINGSHow is this for a report on the

    Lunatic Fringe of Scouting:

It all started innocently enough, theTroop arrived at their pre-booked

summer camp site. Patrol siteswere established on arrival; and

    early next morning everyone is

    making camp gadgets and

fencing off their Patrol areas. Sofar, so good. But then it came to

putting a fence round the Leaders

tents - no sisal left! To quote

    from their camp log entry:

    The problem was overcome with

a little imagination; in fact, points

will be deducted if anyone steps

    through Kims imaginary fence

The madness had begunbut itdidnt stop there. The next days

    entry in the log

Skip has decided that there is a

chance that the RAF Pilot will

refuse to land his helicopter inour field on Tuesday..and

    added:

    Kim planted imaginary roses and

petunias along his tent boundaryUnfortunately, the log also reports

    that:

    Anthony Crookes opened Kims

gate the wrong way and strainedthe hingesthen on the way out,

he wrenched it completely off the

gate post.Later in the week we read of a

    Duty Rota:

Andy Shaw to take Kims cat for

    walkies on Friday.

More entries could be quoted, but I

guess youve got a pretty good

idea of their madcap Log by now.

    The Troop has been Certifiedbut

where they are going to hang their

certificate beats me. On the wallof their imaginary Headquarters, I
