Due to some distribution issues your newspaper turned up far too

late. First of all, we apologize for that. We print at the end of each

RQ’s Racing Operations Manager

(Greyhounds), David van der Giessen,

has resigned.

As some of you may, or may not, know

David has decided to change career

paths to give himself more time with

his young family and exited Racing

Queensland early last month.

While I am glad that David will be

able to spend more time as a father,

Greyhound racing is poorer for his

departure.

David was a breath of fresh air, who

came along when ‘the dogs’ were at

their lowest ebb in Queensland. Like all

newcomers, David would have had his

doubters.

But he certainly won my acclaim

because of his absolute passion and

enthusiasm.

We can always say ‘no’ to a challenge

and whinge about our predicament.

David was one of the far-too-rare breed

who will always confront challenges

with an infectious ‘can-do’ attitude.

Well done David. We wish you well.

Two legends of Queensland sport crossed

paths at Albion Park recently when retired

champion greyhound Glen Gallon met for-

mer Brisbane Lions skipper and recently-

signed Queensland greyhound ambassa-

dor Jonathan Brown.Brown, a three-time AFL premiership winner,

is a life-long greyhound enthusiast and said he was proud to be coming on board with Racing Queens-land and the Greyhound Adoption Program.

“I have been around greyhounds through my mum and dad since I was young. I have owned some myself and now my wife and my children have developed a love for them too,” Brown said.

“For me, it’s a great sport to be involved with, it’s fast and exciting, but above all, you just can’t beat that feeling of watching one of your dogs get

home.”Brown’s feats on the football fi eld left many

in awe and he was in good company with fellow crowd-pleaser Glen Gallon, who is fourth on the all-time Australian prize money earners’ list with $618,827.

“I certainly didn’t need an introduction when Glen Gallon arrived. To win that much money and the races he did, he is an absolute champion of the sport and anyone would love to have a dog like him,” Brown said.

“Buying a dog is a great way to get a few mates together and become involved, particularly with the prize money increases kicking.

“If you have never had a night at the dogs, you’re missing out.”

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon wel-comed Brown to the team and said he would be a

valuable addition to the QLD greyhound industry.“Jonathan is the consummate professional and

his long association with greyhound racing and his passion for the sport make him a great fi t for us,” Condon said.

“I must admit as a lifelong St Kilda fan he crushed my dreams at times, but I’m very happy to have Jonathan on our side promoting the sport in Queensland.”

Brown said he fell in love with greyhound rac-ing at an early age, helping to load dogs for his Uncle Kevin. He even led a Warrnambool Cup winner in for him when he was about 14.

He said the thrill of one of his greyhounds win-ning was as big as anything on the footy fi eld.

Still in thefast laneGEOFF Uhrhane is no stranger to fast

sports and hard work.The young Queensland-based trainer

previously had a very successful career in motor racing where he competed in the Australian Formula Ford and Formula Fiesta VSCRC.

Geoff played a signifi cant role in the Australian Championship Formula Ford, with a victory and fi fteen podiums which subsequently won him 2nd place in the overall standings for the series in 2010.

He then progressed to racing in Europe where he experienced great success before moving to Formula 3 in 2012.

“It was a big step up and an extremely challenging move to the British Formula 3,” said Uhrhane.

“The hardest thing for me at the time was being so far away from home. Although I cherish the experience, the weather in the UK just doesn’t compare to Australia and not having the family support was tough.”

During his time in the UK Geoff met Nick Saava, who took him to the English greyhound derby, the most prestigious race on the British greyhound racing calendar.

“I’m very lucky to have met Nick and through him was able to get a good feel for greyhound racing in the UK. It’s because of Nick and my

family’s history with (greyhound) racing that I decided to get involved.”

When he returned from England in late 2012 Geoff came back to home soil with two English greyhound pups.

“The English dogs have different blood lines to the ones we have in Australia,” he explains.

“In the UK greyhounds live on large properties where they roam freely and spend most their days chasing bunnies along the English countryside. Bringing those pups home was the beginning of my trainer’s career and sport in Australia.”

Geoff’s family currently occupies a large state-of-the-art greyhound facility in the Lockyer Valley at Churchable, about 80kms west of Brisbane.

“I’ve got 15 dogs in training at present all of which are racing in Queensland. Coco Benz is defi nitely one the best dogs I’ve trained so far. She won the 2014 Straight of Origin series at Capalaba greyhound racing club and a few races in Victoria.”

His fi rst memory of greyhound racing is watching a dog trial at Albion Park at 15 years of age. John Dart was the trainer.

“I didn’t think I would end up becoming greyhound trainer, but now I can’t see myself doing anything else,” Uhrhane said.

“You have your good days and your bad days; it’s something you need to be completely dedicated to.”

Young RQ steward in a class of his ownIn greyhound terminology, Patrick

West has ‘pinged from the boxes’.The outstanding young Racing

Queensland cadet steward has excelled in all aspects of his cadetship over the last 12 months.

He is a current example of Racing Queensland’s focus to keep pace with an evolving industry with on-going development and training of staff at Racing Queensland, which is vital to uphold the integrity of the sport.

The racing industry must provide the highest quality of service and skills to attract and retain stakeholders for the greyhound racing industry.

Patrick West joined Racing Queensland in February, 2013, and since starting his cadetship he has demonstrated a systematic and conscious approach to every aspect of the job.

Some of his key achievements to-date include, chairing over 20 race meetings at both non-TAB and TAB greyhound racing clubs. In fact, Patrick chaired his fi rst meeting only 9 months into his cadetship, something which is usually accomplished

at a later stage.Patrick has also been involved with a

number of appeals and enquiries for which he has prepared relevant documentation as well as observed proceedings.

Prior to joining RQ, Patrick was completing studies in Agricultural Science at University of Queensland.

Whilst completing the Bachelor degree, he submitted a research paper on greyhound re-homing for which he received a high distinction. Unsuspectingly, Patrick’s career path has since turned towards greyhounds.

Post-graduation, he commenced work as a cattle buyer for Teys Australia. Teys Australia has been a long term sponsor of greyhound racing events at the Capalaba greyhounds.

Although the role with Teys Australia was fulfi lling, Patrick’s passion for the racing industry was increasingly apparent and a year into the role, an opportunity arose which he just couldn’t ignore. An advertised role with Racing Queensland was brought to his attention and Patrick decided it was now time to live out his

passion and start a new challenge. Needless to say Patrick was successful with his application for a role with RQ stewards.

“Patrick is an integral part of the team,” said Queensland Greyhound Board chairman of stewards Jamie Dart.

“He’s shown a great amount of initiative and professionalism since starting with RQ as a cadet steward for greyhounds. Patrick’s willingness to learn every aspect of the role has led to him excelling in every component of his cadetship at RQ.

“We are pleased to welcome Patrick to the Greyhound Integrity team as a fully-fl edged racing steward.”

So the ‘mail’ is that the much-awaited new

track at Logan will open next year.Racing Queensland CEO Darren

Condon remains confi dent that the ‘one turn’ track will be up and running by July next year. My prediction is January 2016. That’s just a ‘gut feeling’.

Hopefully, if Condon and myself are both wrong, we will both be out by only a few months and a late 2015 opening might be the result.

I can’t fi nd a betting outlet with prices offered on the opening date. I very much doubt that July 2015 would be the favourite.

Seriously, though, the prospect of calling races at a brand new track is most exciting. As is the opportunity, no doubt, for trainers to be able to race their greyhounds again on a track resembling the magnifi cent circuits at Toowoomba and the Gold Coast which are mere memories of yesteryear. Toowoomba closed in 2000, the Gold Coast in 2008. So it’s been a long time without tracks of that type in south-east Queensland.

I’ve had the misfortune of calling the swansong races at the Gabba, Lawnton and Beenleigh. Pat O’Shea called the last race at Toowoomba. Steve Hawkins called the last race at the Gold Coast Parklands. I didn’t even turn up that night, in July 2008, it would have been such a sad occasion that I preferred to stay away. Call that melodramatic or over-reacting if you like, but that’s how I felt.

Will calling races at Logan be any different or more enjoyable than working at, say, Albion Park or Ipswich? The answer is a defi nite ‘yes’.

Trying to paint an accurate picture via a race call of ‘blink and miss’ events over 331 and 395 metres at Albion Park or 431 metres at Ipswich can be a nightmare. A caller tries to get through the entire fi eld in correct order, which is what punters and race watchers expect. But because there’s normally plenty of early interference from those starting points, trying to point out which greyhounds are being checked or running wide distracts the caller from the task at hand - which is to try and give every greyhound’s position in running a mention.

Calling on a ‘one turn’ track as Logan will

be should be a ‘dream’ because of minimal interference. That was certainly the case in my twenty years of calling at the Gold Coast Parklands (1988 – 2008) and while fi lling in for Pat O’Shea at Toowoomba. The racecaller gets a feel for the race on a big track, you can see the leader coming back to the swoopers and it’s all exciting stuff.

One of my wishes for Logan is that the shortest race distance should be 457 or 460 metres or whatever similar starting point is installed. That will give runners a lovely straight run of something like 130 metres from the starting point. From their inception the Gold Coast and Toowoomba had sprint distances of 457 metres. Later, a 401 metres start was installed at the Gold Coast and 390 metres at Toowoomba. To me, that ‘bastardised’ racing on those magnifi cent tracks. Yeah, yeah, I hear the cry – not all greyhounds can run out a

strong 457 metres. But those shorter races which

started quite close to a bend were not much better than the 431 metres at Ipswich or the 395 metres at Albion Park as far as early race interference was concerned.

And here’s another wish for Logan. Assuming that Albion Park remains the main Thursday metropolitan meeting, and that makes sense, I’d love to see Logan conduct the next highest prizemoney meeting of the week in south-east Queensland.

Monday night would be the ideal time. Additionally, a few times a year, let’s make Logan the main Thursday night card.

What about a group one or two Gold Coast Cup on a Thursday night? Magnifi cent sprinters from all over the land running on a beautifully safe ‘one turn’ track.

How good would that be! Sydney used to have that with Harold Park. Come on Queensland, you can do it!

One step at a time though. Let’s keep a watch out for the bulldozers to kickstart some construction at Logan and move towards getting the show on the road.

including the Gold Coast Cup, and they all started from box two. Hard Luck also jumped from box two.

Selena Zammit trained Hard Luck’s dam, Lorralai.

“Whilst she wasn’t a champion, she was ultra consistent. You would be happy with any greyhound as consistent as she was,’’ race night handler and Selena’s husband Mick said.

Lorralai, a daughter of Surf Lorian and 2004 National Sprint Championship fi nalist Yo Yo String, won 28 of her 72 starts. She was raced by Gary Taylor and his family of Beaudesert. Hard Luck is owned by John Jambora and Gavin Watt.

Mick says Hard Luck shows the potential to be every bit as good as Lorralai.

“We’ve had a few injuries with the dog along the way, the latest being a fi bula problem. He was ready to race about three weeks before the Eric Thomson but with that race looming and worth $10,000 to the winner, we decided to wait for it.’’

The Zammits have just two greyhounds in work at present. They are Hard Luck and her litter sister Buck City who has won a 395 metres maiden and 520 metres novice at Albion Park.

“We will have a few more to race very shortly,’’ said Selena.

The Eric Thomson commenced at the Gold Coast in the mid 1980s and is named for the former patron of the Gold Coast Greyhound Racing Club. It was run for a few years at the Gold Coast track which was located inside the trotting circuit at Southport. Among the early winners was the John Kaatz trained Brother Black who went on to be a Capalaba sensation whilst still being very competitive at circle tracks.

The Eric Thomson was run at the Gold Coast Parklands from 1989 to that track’s closure in 2008 and its home is now Albion Park.

Who knows, the 2015 edition may be run at Logan?

EVER since night greyhound racing

started in Queensland, the metropolitan

training premiership, firstly at the Gabba

from 1972 to 1993 and now at Albion Park,

has been dominated by basically a handful

of people.In the Gabba era it was primarily Harold

Follett, Mike O’Byrne, John Reimer and Tony Zammit. At Albion Park Tony Zammit has also been very prominent, along with in more recent years since Zammit scaled back his operation, Sandra Hunt and Ron Ball.

2014 has seen the emergence of a trainer who has been around for quite a while and is now making a real impact. Peter Ruetschi leads this year’s Albion Park trainers’ premiership by an unbeatable margin of just over 100 points.

Racing at Ipswich over the fi ve weeks that Albion Park is closed will see points earned go to that track’s premierships, not Albion Park. When Albion Park resumes racing on November 17, that’s only seven weeks until the end of the year at which point Ruetschi will be Albion Park’s premier trainer.

“I keep pinching myself to be sure that all of this is real,’’ Ruetschi said after another highly successful night at Albion Park at the recent Gold Coast Cup meeting.

The Ruetschi-trained Give You Credit, a $9.50 chance, led most of the way to beat some big names in the group 3 $25,000 to the winner Gold Coast Cup in 29.91.

Give You Credit’s litter sister, You Can Talk (Outa Credit – Where Are You) won the free for all in 30.15. And Hougenie (Fear Zafonic – Una’s Pride) won the last race, a fi fth grade, in 29.95.

Give You Credit, You Can Talk and Hougenie all started from box two.

“I’m just so proud of Where Are You, she has been a fabulous broodbitch for us,’’ Ruetschi said.

“She has produced three litters to race, two by Elite and Classy and one by Outa Credit. She has a litter by Don’t Knocka Him aged seventeen months and a litter aged four months by Lochinvar Marlow.

“That’s it for Where Are You, she’s retired, she has done her job. We will breed with some of her daughters.

“Ken Crawford, the owner of the Outa Credit litter, couldn’t be at the track and my mum hasn’t been too well lately, so the Gold Coast Cup win was a huge thrill for a number of reasons.’’

Where Are You will be Albion Park’s leading broodbitch for this year. And Ken Crawford will be the track’s leading owner.

Outa Credit sits at number twelve on this year’s Albion Park sires’ premiership and while that may sound quite a way down the list, he’s ahead of Mogambo and not far behind Bit Chili.

Caller’s Box’.

Last month, myself and some colleagues opened up with some embarrassing moments that have happened to us in the course of broadcasting races. Here are some more stories.

What would you think about a caller who gave credit to a trainer who doesn’t exist? Well, I did that. The venue was the Gabba, late 1980s. A greyhound from Sydney had won the feature event and I announced that the winner was trained by Catherine Field from New South Wales, adding that ‘this lady trainer has done a great job with this dog’.

There was a good reason for never having heard of Catherine Field - there is no such person. It’s the name of the place, in Sydney’s outer south west, where the trainer lived. The trainer’s name was in the racebook but I had not seen it. Oops.

Also at the Gabba around that time, there was an afghan race which I was calling. One of the hounds stopped running near the home turn and paused for a nature call, squatting for a ‘number two’ to the laughter of the crowd. I said the fi rst thing that sprung to mind, declaring that the hound ‘had stopped for a tosca’. I didn’t think it was a particularly funny line at the time, but it made many television blooper type shows and is still shown occasionally to this day.

My late father actually saw the race on television in England when he was on holidays there. I’d like to be paid royalties for every time that ‘tosca’ line is replayed.

South Australia’s Ray Fewings has a lengthy involvement in racing of the three codes. He recalls some amusing incidents.

“It was 1961 when I fi rst started calling greyhounds, aged 13. In those days greyhounds were racing behind pilot dogs, there was no mechanical lure. And the bookmakers were illegal. One day the police raided the track looking for the bookies and people were running everywhere. One of the bookies, a real character named ‘Doggie’ Brennan, hotfooted it and disappeared. The police gave up and left and Brennan’s wife couldn’t locate him either. Almost everyone had left the track when the wife discovered that Doggie had locked himself

in the boot of their car.“There was an occasion calling the

Cheltenham gallops in Adelaide. As the fi eld was making the turn out of the straight, they were confronted by a car parked on the track. Horses went everywhere and unfortunately one of them collided with the vehicle and broke a leg. It turned out that a barrier attendant had been in the pub on that Saturday morning and left his run a little late to get to the track for the fi rst race. He arrived as the horses were in the gates and tried to drive across the track before they jumped, only to fi nd the crossing blocked

by the inside running rail. There was big trouble over that one.’’

Fewings tells another horse racing yarn. “At Victoria Park we had three callers, all

in a line at the top of the grandstand. The back straight ran parallel with East Terrace, a very busy Adelaide street. I was calling the fi eld when I noticed a gold cap speeding from the rear of the fi eld going two to their one. For the life of me I couldn’t identify the colours and decided to wait until it cleared the fi eld. Caller Alf Gard in the box next door wasn’t so lucky. He got excited, declaring – there’s one charging around them at the rate of knots, it’s, it’s . . .

. . a bloke on a motor bike. The horses were at the right level to block out the motor cyclist going along the road. Only his gold helmet was visible. I can still see it now, the bike rider peering across, watching the race as he rode along.’’

Peter O’Neill from Perth found out the hard way about an unwritten rule among broadcasters, be they racing, sport or otherwise, to treat every microphone as being ‘live’.

In other words, don’t say anything untoward, in the belief that a microphone is switched off, because it could actually be open or live.

O’Neill fell for the trick of believing his microphone to be closed when it wasn’t.

“I had to call the greyhounds at Northam and the regular caller there, Ryan Levitske, had warned me that the phone didn’t always work. The judge had to call through with the fi nishing numbers as the caller couldn’t see the results board. It was a photo for second, the phone rang and I said – hello, broadcast. There was nobody

on the other end. The phone rang again, same thing – hello broadcast, but nobody there. I told Sky and radio audience that I would have to walk down the stairs to get the judge’s numbers. TAB radio took me off air and I thought Sky had as well. I let out a few expletives about the phone not working. When I came back upstairs I was told that everything I had said was heard on Sky Racing.”

An incident at Cannington was not O’Neill’s fault, but it was a strange happening.

“It was a Saturday night and an Irishman had his buck’s night. He was pretty full of alcohol and decided to jump on the track as the dogs

raced down the back straight in race six. He was in the home straight, with his shirt off, waving his arms. He started moving from the outside rail to the inside and the lure clipped him as the fi eld approached the fi nishing line. The momentum of the lure threw him to the inside of the track where he landed on his back and he didn’t move for about fi ve minutes. After the fi ve minutes, and me thinking he might be dead, his mate walked across the track to those standing over him and put a stubby of bourbon under his nose. He rose from the dead and walked off the track. The police later caught him at the nearby Burger bar. Stewards declared that the race result would stand, despite the interference.’’

All callers have been delayed getting to a track, for various reasons. But in true show business style, Victoria’s Adam Crettenden and his offsider Arthur Cooper made sure that ‘the show must go on’.

Crettenden takes up the story: “It was the early 1990s and I went to the Stawell races with Arthur. We were running late, so late in fact that Arthur drove into the track, straight through the betting ring and pulled up near the mounting yard. The runners in race one were at the gates. I hurried to the offi ce to get a racebook and Arthur sprinted up the stairs to the broadcast box. I got the book to him as the last runner moved in and Arthur literally learned the colours as they raced.’’

Calling a Mildura harness meeting gave Crettenden a night to remember.

“We used to fl y from Melbourne to and from Mildura. It had been a mundane night and we, including chief steward Terry Bailey, were all looking forward to getting home. It was about midnight, the pilot starts the plane and there was a problem with one of the two engines. We couldn’t take off.

The pilot had to summons a replacement plane from their base in Melbourne and a pilot to fl y it to Mildura to pick us up. I quickly found out that trying to sleep inside a small eight seater plane isn’t an easy thing to do.

So I slept on the tarmac. The replacement plane arrived at 5am and we were back in Melbourne two hours later.’’

Tony Brett was, understandably, a

disappointed man, having to scratch Flash

Reality from the recent Top Gun at the

Meadows.Flash Reality injured his off side hock during a

gallop four days before the Top Gun.“It’s nothing too serious but enough to rule him

out of the big race. That was to be the dog’s last gallop before the race, we were booked to fl y to Melbourne the next day,’’ Brett explained.

“He pulled up lame after the gallop but there’s no bone damage. Even though we had the four box, I gave him a good winning chance.

“I’m quite disappointed for (owner) Marlene Ellis. She and her family were coming to Melbourne and I can tell you that participating in a Top Gun is a wonderful experience. They had to miss that.

“I’d say the dog will be out of the rest of the Melbourne spring carnival. You’re fl at out winning races like the Shoot Out and Melbourne Cup when your dog is 100 percent fi t.’’

Brett said the group 1 Brisbane Cup which commences at Albion Park on November 27 will be the next mission for Flash Reality. The dog won this year’s group 1 Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park. Only one greyhound has ever won the Winter Carnival – Brisbane Cup double in the same year. Her name was Flying Amy, back in 1995.

Acacia Park completed the double but in different years (1983 and 84), as did Golden Fox (1988 and 89) and Dancing Gamble (1987 and 88).

Flash Reality would have been Brett’s seventh runner in a Top Gun. That’s a magnifi cent

achievement. I doubt that there would be another non-Victorian based trainer to have had six Top Gun runners since the race’s inception in 1993.

Actually, the Brett family have had eight Top Gun runners. Tony’s late father, Dave, trained a star bitch named Toban Leah who contested the fi rst two runnings of the Top Gun. She ran fi fth in 1993 and eighth in 1994.

Tony’s love affair with the race started in 2003. His champion Bogie Leigh fi nished third that year to Bombastic Shiraz and Spring Secret. Bogie Leigh was there in 2004 as well, fi nishing sixth to Whisky Assassin.

2005 at the Meadows saw Brett’s Black Enforcer explode out of box fi ve and run home an easy winner. The Top Gun was worth $125,000 to the winner that year.

In 2008 the Brett trained Queen Lauryn fi nished sixth to Regal Thyme.

Glen Gallon had two cracks at the Top Gun for Brett. He ran fi fth to David Bale in 2012 and fi fth to Dyna Nalin last year.

Black Enforcer is the only Queensland trained greyhound to win the Top Gun. Some records show 1994 winner New Fox as a Queenslander. But we can’t claim him. New Fox did a lot of racing in Queensland but was not trained in this state. He was trained by Dennis Reid of the Northern Rivers.

major track renovation, Ipswich has been

a busy venue, racing seven times a week.

The fi rst Thursday night meeting at Ipswich was very similar in standard to the previous Thursday at Albion Park.

There were no features, no jackpots, just the normal good, solid Thursday meeting for metropolitan prizemoney.

Did punters shy off betting because it was Ipswich? No they didn’t.

Let’s face it, we human beings are creatures of habit. There are punters who only bet on the main metropolitan meeting of the week which is usually Albion Park on a Thursday.

When they see that the Thursday night races are at Ipswich, some probably just turned away without actually looking at the fi elds.

That’s no refl ection on Ipswich, it’s just the way some of us operate!

The two most popular forms of betting on greyhounds on Tattsbet continue to be win and trifecta. At the fi rst Ipswich Thursday meeting, the total win pool hold on the ten races with Tatts (formerly Unitab) was down 3.24 percent compared to the previous Thursday at Albion Park. But total betting on trifectas was up 4.54 percent.

Negotiations with Sky have seen Darwin switch from Friday night to Sunday. Previously, there was radio TAB coverage only and Tattsbet was the only TAB betting on the venue.

On the fi rst Sunday Sky meeting betting fi gures were good. Win betting showed an increase of 52 percent from the last Friday non Sky meeting. Strangely, the next most popular form of betting, the trifecta, only saw an increase of a mere eight

dollars, which is less than one percent. There were fi ve races on that Sunday. Darwin

club secretary-manager Craig Sant says the immediate aim is to stage six races with full fi elds of eight.

“In time, we hope increased betting will lead to better prizemoney then more dogs purchased to race here. But for now it’s one step at a time,’’ Sant said.

The quality of the lighting at Darwin’s Winnellie Park track looked to be of higher standard than some other Sky covered night venues.

Boody slays Rocky raceThere are few dusty roads in country

Queensland that Steve Boody hasn’t

travelled.In more than 30 years involved in greyhounds

Boody has criss-crossed the state with his dogs in tow and a passion for a good-priced winner.

“Yep, life’s been good to me,” he refl ected recently from his current home at Coominya, about 80kms west of Brisbane.

“I’m still gaining weight, still sucking oxygen and still have an extra dollar that I can spend – so life isn’t too bad.”

His fortunes rose a little last month when his very handy dog Marlin Slayer (Surf Lorian-Perfect Thrill) fl ashed home to win the Rockhampton Young Guns at the very juicy odds of $13.20. But more about this dog later.

After a lifetime travelling from Border Park to Cairns, Boody, now 61, says the miles are starting to take their toll.

He’ll still be a frequent visitor north to Rocky, but will be seen less frequently in Townsville and Cairns.

In fact, the bloke who loves the country tracks and its people is quietly plotting an assault on a Thursday night winner at Albion Park.

“I have had a few placings, but have never won at Albion Park on a Thursday night,” he says.

“But I would be tickled pink if I ever do.”That likelihood is increasing with some good

prospects coming out of his prolifi c brood bitch Perfect Thrill.

Other than Marlin Slayer he also has Thrilla Moment, a young blue-fawn dog that was also in the Rockhampton Young Guns fi nal (5th) and a chaser that Boody considers ‘the best he has ever put a collar and lead on’.

Also out in the paddock at Coominya are another two litters from Perfect Thrill - fi ve, 11-month-old pups by El Grand Senor and three nine-week-olds by Knocka Norris.

Like Marlin Slayer in the Rocky Young Guns, Boody may have left his run late, but is close to ‘graduating’ from a lengthy training ‘apprenticeship’.

Born at Cribb Island, which was later resumed to be part of the Brisbane airport, Boody had an early initiation into greyhounds. His dad, Desmond, had dogs and also rode the pony that dragged the lure at the straight track at Beenleigh.

He says his fi rst pup came via his brother’s race bitch, Megan Leslie (a Gabba winner) when he was in his late 20s.

“I knew very little about greyhound racing in those early days,” he says.

“But I had a couple of very good mentors in Noel Foster and Charlie Lambert.”

In the following years he began his travels and was based in both Mackay and Rockhampton for a number of years, often training alongside his son Ken.

He experienced a purple patch while in Mackay with a winning strike rate of more than 50 per cent at the Ayr and Mackay tracks (neither track is still operating).

Boody has had his share of country winners, especially ones who have taken out Young Guns crowns across the state – Gorgas (his foundation brood bitch), Dynamic Angel, Island Force, Unpainted and Saw.

He also had the 28kg pocket rocket Dialo, who made the fi nal of most of the country cups.

For the past couple of years Boody moved to Rockhampton before taking up an invitation from good mate Eric Raeburn to help out at his Coominya property.

“The people involved in greyhound racing are

good people,” Boody says.“Whether it is showing me the ropes of how

to train or breed, or opening up their homes and putting out the welcome mat – they are very generous people.

“So many – Tom and Lyn Noble, George Isaxson in Mt Isa, the Olsens and Goodwins up north, Ray Russell and Sandra Hunt, Ray and Lyn Pyke in Rocky, Barbara and Bill Sam in Mackay – and so many more.

“I still consider myself a novice trainer, still a lot to learn. I take my hat off to the full-time trainers, the champion trainers. I have a lot of respect for them because they are where they are because of hard work.

“Their’s is not an easy life. It is a seven-day-a-week lifestyle.”

Boody explains that Marlin Slayer came via a free service to Surf Lorian that Perfect Thrill won when taking out a 4th\5th grade fi nal.

Early in his career Marlin Slayer picked up a couple of tickets for failing to chase, however

Boody says the dog would start brilliantly, but would then slow to allow the pack to catch up.

“It was just a bad trait that he had developed,” Boody explains.

“So I took him to Ray Russell and Sandra Hunt, who basically re-educated the dog and he has been great since.”

In the $4000 to the winner Rocky Young Guns Final (407m) Marlin Slayer started from the outside box. He gradually worked across to the fence and before reeling in the leader Velocity Chezon (Christine Pollard), with Wonsden (Paul Frederickson) 3rd. Short-priced favourite Cosmic Crest (Darren Taylor) struck trouble early and fi nished 7th. The margins: .75 x 3. The time: 23.54.

Marlin Slayer’s name of course has a story.Boody and son Ken were part of a punters

syndicate that took off for a fi shing trip in the Hinchinbrook Channel, in far north Queensland.

One morning Ken and a couple of mates took off into the open ocean in one of the small tinnies to chase some mackerel.

They came back with a great story. Ken landed a black marlin, one of nature’s great fi ghting fi sh. The boys brought it up to the side of their tiny craft and then released it.

And Marlin Slayer ‘was born’.No doubt with the quality of young dogs he

has around him, Steve Boody will be talking less about the one that got away.

MORE than one dream was realised when

the well-travelled Yogi Blue dug deep to

take the honours in the recent Lismore

Workers Club Cup (520m).

It was a fi rst Group success for Queensland trainer Peter O’Reilly, who described the win as ‘a dream come true’.

However there were similar feelings at the end of the night for Lismore track manager Lisa

Vanderstok, who was ‘absolutely elated’ with the night.

“Everything turned out well, fantastic,” she said.

“The quality of the racing, a big crowd … it really was one of our most memorable nights.”

The meeting was also part of the Greyhound Racing NSW’s Thank Dog It’s Friday racing series promotion.

“The cup may have gone to a Queenslander,

but they come here so often to support us that we treat them as locals,” Vanderstok said.

“The fact that Peter brought his dogs here to trial prior to the cup, I believe, was very signifi cant in the win.”

Yogi Blue jumped well from the seven box, running in second position by the fi rst turn.

Down the back two dogs, Bill’s Fantasy and Yogi Blue, were able to pull away from the fi eld. From the 600 boxes Yogi Blue loomed beside the

leader Bill’s Fantasy and at the home turn took the lead and raced away winning by 1 ¼ lengths with 5 ½ lengths to the 3rd place getter Outa Tempo.

O’Reilly, who collected the $40,000 top prize, said it had been a nerve-racking fi nish to the race.

“I was thinking, ‘please don’t get beaten by a nose’,” he said.

“When I realised he’d won, it was brilliant.”

There’s one sure fire way to start an

argument. That is to compare a champion

of the current era to those of yesteryear,

be it greyhounds, racehorses or any field

of sporting endeavour.The honour roll of the Brisbane Greyhound

Racing Club’s group one Brisbane Cup, run at Albion Park, looks like a ‘who’s who’ of greyhound racing.

It would be a brave person to suggest that one winner of the event in its 42 years history is better than all others.

Perhaps a way around that curly question would be to compile a fi eld of ‘most memorable’ Brisbane Cup winners and leave it to you, the reader, to make your selection as to who is the best. So let’s do that!

Of course, this writer’s choices of most memorable winners would differ from that of anyone else. I was going to try and limit the fi eld to eight but there are ten that I’d like to give recognition. So here they are for your consideration.

1973 winner Top Simbi is virtually an automatic inclusion. He whizzed around the 558 metres course at the Gabba in 32.85 that year. For what he went on to do throughout an amazing career which saw him become the fi rst greyhound inducted into the Racing Queensland Hall of Fame, Top Simbi is in my ‘top ten’ without any hesitation.

The Brisbane Cup has had a few name changes throughout its history. In 1986 it was known as the Coca-Cola Cup. I’m putting that year’s winner, Pretty Fearless, in my list.

The Reg and Mary Crawford trained dog was a mere 22 months of age, drew box six, was against a fi eld which included some top class interstate sprinters, and Pretty Fearless made them look second rate. He romped home in 32.69 seconds.

1988 winner Dancing Gamble, trained by Pauline Fruend, is a fi nalist for me. He ran the brilliant time of 32.57 and was the undisputed star of the Gabba during 1988-89. Dancing Gamble brought people to the track, he won 29 races at the Gabba and he never let us down. Many Gabba punters regarded Dancing Gamble as a ‘meal ticket’. There were around 30 bookmakers fi elding at the time, many took on Dancing Gamble in the belief that he couldn’t keep winning, week in, week out. But he did!

The Gabba closed and Albion Park opened within seven days in February 1993. The 1995 Brisbane Cup winner, Ron Ball’s Flying Amy, is a ‘gimme’. Her deeds need no elaboration. She won in 29.89.

1998 winner Questions goes in for me because he won the race with his characteristic strong fi nishing burst from back in the fi eld. The Dennis Reid trained dog didn’t run a quick time, it was 30.21, but the win was memorable because of the superstars he relegated into the minor placings. Rapid Journey fi nished second and Faithful Hawk third.

Tricky Creek, trained by Helen and Mick Ivers, is in there, for the reason that she is the

only greyhound to win the Brisbane

Cup twice. That happened in 2001 and 2002.

Like Flying Amy, 2003 winner Bogie Leigh is a ‘gimme’. The Australian and Queensland Hall of Famer ran a race record (at that stage) of 29.83. Bogie Leigh was just a sensation, full stop, no further elaboration is required!

I’ve got 2005 winner Pororoca in there because he ran a track record winning time of 29.66. And not only that, the Andrea Dailly trained dog recorded the longest winning margin in the history of the race. Pororoca romped home by nine and a quarter lengths.

2011 winner Glen Gallon for Tony Brett was just magnifi cent because of who chased him home.

Dyna Tron fi nished second, Radley Bale third, He Knows Uno fourth and Bekim Bale fi fth. They were all stars in their own right and Glen Gallon showed them a clean pair of pads home in 30.10.

For a memorable winner, how about last year when headline grabber Kiss Me Ketut led all the way for a heart stomping win? The publicity created by that dog and his namesake from the AAMI television advertisements was just amazing. Ketut (the Human) was there to see Kiss Me Ketut (the greyhound) win the Brisbane Cup.

The legendary horse trainer Bart Cummings was quoted recently as saying: “Champions

shouldn’t be compared, just remembered.’’ Perhaps we need to apply that Cummings logic to greyhound

racing’s Brisbane Cup. This year’s Cup is rapidly

approaching. Heats are on Thursday night, November 27 with the $75,000 to the winner fi nal on Thursday, December 4 at Albion Park.

Will another ‘top ten’ memory be unveiled? More than likely so.

GREYHOUND heaven now exists.

Or at least Gail Lane believes so. The Queens-land Greyhound Adoption program’s Behavioural Assessment Manager says the slice of animal uto-pia can be found at Churchable, about 70km west of Brisbane.

“It really is an amazing complex,” she says.“It has almost everything a greyhound would

want – air-conditioned kennels, large exercise yards, a dam to swim in. It really is fantastic.”

Even better for Gail, this is where the Grey-hound Adoption Program (GAP) now calls home.

GAP, is an initiative of Racing Queensland, dedicated to fi nding homes for greyhounds that are no longer suitable for racing.

Since their beginnings as a volunteer body in the mid-90s, GAP has housed thousands of grey-hounds.

These days, funded through RQ, GAP is a pro-fessionally-run organization whose mission is to:

• Find suitable, loving, long-term homes for racing greyhounds whose careers have come to an end.

• Educate the public about the true greyhound personality and remove misconceptions and mis-taken views that many people have of this won-derful, gentle animal.

• Encourage a more positive image of the grey-hound and to stimulate the public’s desire to own a greyhound as a family pet.

• Prepare and assess the greyhounds’ suitability as loving and loyal family pets.

• Give ongoing support to the greyhound and its new owners.

However GAP’s biggest problem has been sourcing a facility to house these dogs when they fi rst come into the adoption program.

Enter the Uhrhanes. The successful greyhound racing family – husband and wife Dennis and Nina and son Geoff – invited GAP to use part of their state-of-the-art facility, Sovereign Lodge, at Churchable.

“It was an fantastic gesture,” says Gail.“GAP offi cer Bronwen Gallagher and I went

and had a look at their property and couldn’t wait to say ‘yes’.

“We have been given a great facility – we can’t thank the Uhrhane’s enough.”

From the 16 kennels that were available at the previous facility at Burpengary, from October 10 GAP now has use of 30 kennels as well as a resi-dence, where a full-time GAP care-taker lives.

With the new premises Gail is hoping to in-

crease the number of greyhounds that are re-housed by GAP each year.

She says GAP’s biggest need now us to fi nd more GAP carers – the people who assist in bring-ing the greyhounds through the transitional period of being race dogs to family pets – a time frame of at least six weeks.

“Finding the permanent home for these beauti-ful animals isn’t the problem,” she says.

“We need more carers. At any time we can have up to 50 greyhounds with carers. These is where we need help.” If you want to know more about the

Sad loss forVic racingOne of Victoria greyhound racing’s

quiet achievers, Peter Brown, has

passed away, aged 65.

Brown, of Lara, and son Darren

have formed a successful greyhound

partnership for many years.

The pair has bred and trained many

winners, often in partnership with

Melbourne Greyhound Racing

Association Director, Brian Parkinson.

The Browns have been regulars on

the metropolitan circuit and on the

group racing scene in recent years.

The best greyhound they have been

associated with was triple Group 1

finalist Cosmic Chief, who retired in

2011.

The family also experienced a

huge thrill when winning the 2014

Warrnambool Classic with Magic Diva

in May.

Capalaba’s Michael Miller Memorial fifth

grade series is run in memory of the

former Toowoomba G.R.C. starter.Miller, aged 19, was killed in a motor accident

near Toowoomba on October 3, 1998. The Toowoomba club staged a memorial race in 1999. When that track was closed in February 2000, the event was transferred to Capalaba where it has been run on an annual basis in October.

This year’s Michael Miller was a memorial race in more ways than one. The winner, Jimary Comet, is named for two parents of the owners.

Mal and Helen Ross, formerly of Deagon in Brisbane and now based at Iluka near Grafton, have been long-time friends of trainer Bob Patching who is based at Waterford.

Mal and Helen breed, own and train greyhounds and have received some pups and brood bitches from Patching over a long period of time.

Mal’s father’s name was Jim and Helen’s mother was Mary, hence ‘Jimary’ for a race name prefi x.

In July this year, Ross started six greyhounds at a Capalaba race meeting. Patching assisted on the day and remarked to Ross that he liked the look of a black male dog who raced that day. That was was Jimary Comet. He was unplaced in a maiden race but caught the attention of Patching whose association with Capalaba has been lengthy and very successful.

“Mal said he had some problems with the dog and didn’t think he was going as good as he could. I said I reckon the dog would be a really good straight track performer with a few runs there and could win a race like the Michael Miller,’’ Patching said.

“Mal and Helen asked if I’d like to train the dog for them as I’m a lot closer to Capalaba than they are. There were a few problems to overcome, wrist, shoulder, back. I started slipping the dog and he was fl ying. I put him in a maiden race at Capalaba and was pleasantly surprised to get 5 to 1 ($6.00).

“After that his form started to slip and he wasn’t jumping at all well. Chiropractor Robert Humphreys at Jimboomba found some problems with the dog’s neck and back and fi xed that.’’

Jimary Comet won his heat of the Michael Miller in 20.10. The son of Cosmic Rumble and Harpo Lady won the $4500 fi nal in the slick time of 19.71, by four lengths over Busby.

“I thought he was pretty well boxed in the eight for the fi nal and when he got a clear run early, they weren’t going to run him down. He’s got a pretty big motor. But I must admit I didn’t think he would go as fast as 19.71,’’ Patching said.

Patching won the Michael Miller Memorial with Miss Minyara in 2010.

Mal and Helen Ross made the move from Deagon to Iluka in 2011.

“My dad and Helen’s mum died within six months and we decided on a change of scenery and location, it just made sense at the time,’’ said Mal.

“We bought one acre near Iluka. It wasn’t a greyhound property, there was a twenty-year-old house and lots of trees. It was a case of affordability, we didn’t want to end up with a mortgage, we just used the money we had. We have built puppy kennels, a broodbitch area and put in some small paddocks.

The property is 100 metres long and we have put in a straight track of that length where the pups run every day.’’

“We believe in no short cuts when it comes to feeding pups. We give them the best and if they

eat everything, we give them some more.’’Mal and Helen have a team of around fi ve in

work and this will increase as pups by Bit Chili – Harpo Lady and Vee Man Vane – Miss Clownton get to racing age.

They have high hopes for Jimary Vixen, a litter sister to Jimary Comet, so much so that they have sent the bitch to be trained in Sydney by top mentor Anthony Azzopardi.

“We think there might be a good race down there in the bitch, perhaps over 600 metres or

longer, and I can’t travel that far,’’ said Mal.“And we hope that Bob Patching can continue

with the good work with Jimary Comet. All credit goes to Bob for the Michael Miller win. I couldn’t get the dog going and Bob took him on and persevered.’’

Ross has a nickname of ‘Last race Mal’ because it’s uncanny how often he has a runner drawn in the last race on a program.

First race, last race or any race in between, a win is always enjoyable.

OVER the many years the Michael Miller Memorial has been run, this tribute to youthful exuberance cut short has tossed up some pretty good winners.

The race is held annually at Capalaba but started many years ago at Toowoomba to honour a young man who lived for greyhound racing and was a popular member of the track staff at the long since closed racing venue.

Since its move to the straight track, the Michael Miller has seen glory days when sponsorship by Terry Hines saw it chased by some great gallopers.

In 2009, Group 1 winner Mr Metz was a brilliant winner. He would go on to prove himself one of the best sprinters in the country with a host of Group victories.

Other winners have been Gozo Chanel Line, Mr Quicksilver, Corolla, Rylee’s Enforcer, Rylee’s Ebony and Miss Manyara.

The latter was trained by Bob Patching as devoted a Capalaba man as there is.

Bob won it this year with a big striding dog called Jimary Comet (Cosmic Rumble-Harpo Lady) for Mal and Helen Ross.

Mal and Helen had lived at Deagon but moved a few years ago to the Northern Rivers of NSW where they continue to breed greyhounds.

And it is a long cherished friendship between Mal and leading dog man Marty Hallinan that is behind the Michael Miller success of Jimary Comet.

Mal is originally from Orange and as kids at school he and Marty became the best of mates. It is

a friendship, not really based around greyhounds, that has endured over many years.

Mal is 48.“I knew all the guys at the kennels and I would

often go out there and help out. Marty and I would play golf together as well,” he said.

Mal first got interested in greyhounds when he lived in Scone as a 17-year-old.

“A mate called Ross Penowitz had dogs,” said Mal. “His grandfather Mick had raced a lot of good dogs that all had the Pans prefix.”

Mal had been brought up in a family that liked a punt … on horses.

In 1997, Mal shifted to Brisbane where he met Helen and they married.

“I got a work transfer,” he said. “I was working in the business of manufacturing alcohol. Our company does a lot of exports.”

At first Mal simply spent time travelling to and from Brisbane as overseer of production. When he met Helen, he moved there for what he thought would be for good.

He’d had a dog or two over the years and one of the first he bought was a bitch from Spanish Dance, a Pringle legend. Unfortunately for Mal the bitch was not a success as a producer.

But three and a half years ago, Mal and Helen decided they’d had enough of the rat race of

Brisbane.“Our parents had died and we decided we had

no ties to Brisbane,” said Mal. “So we sold up and moved to a unit at Iluka in NSW.”

It also didn’t take them long to realise a unit in Iluka was not for them.

“So we bought an acre at Fairy Hill between Kyogle and Casino and started looking around for a broodbitch,” said Mal.

Where better to look than his long time mate Marty Hallinan.

“We had stayed in close contact,” said Mal. “Marty and I talk at least every couple of weeks and often we will go and stay with Marty and his family at Orange.”

Marty gave Mal a couple of options.One was a bitch called Harpo Lady (Bond-Al

Fresco).Her mother Al Fresco had been an outstanding

stayer and the legend Spanish Dance was the third mother of Harpo Lady.

And Harpo Lady just happened to be a half sister to the champion stayer Mantra Lad and the outstanding gallopers Natalie Rass, Mantra Style, Octane Al, Bulletproof Girl, Porcelain Girl and the current day broodbitch star Navigator Miss.

“Harpo Lady had been sent to Melbourne to race after she was broken in with good reports,”

said Mal of the bitch. “She was going great but did a monkey muscle and then the other.

“She was sent home.”Eventually, Harpo Lady was given another try

on the track with a local Orange trainer but she did not stand up again.

“I paid $4000 for her from Marty,” said Mal. “Business is business.”

When she came on season, Mal did his homework and then relied on Brett Lee to make him a success.

“When I looked at the cross of Cosmic Rumble with Harpo Lady it came up with a 3x3 of Brett Lee,” said Mal.

“That was going to work for me.”Brett Lee was balanced via a daughter in

Cosmic Rumble and a son in Harpo Lady.The mating also brought in a 4x4 double of

Malawi’s Prince, again balanced via daughter and son.

But Harpo Lady also included in her pedigree a cross of a special ingredient for success with Cosmic Rumble … a cross of Grove Whisper.

It is Grove Whisper who is found in many, many of the best progeny of Cosmic Rumble. Grove Whisper is bred along similar lines to Minnies Nikita, the dam of Spiral Nikita, sire of Cosmic Rumble.

Cosmic Rumble’s recent Group 1 National Sprint winner Chica Destacarda is bred on the same cross.

Mal got nine pups and among them is the Michael Miller winner Jimary Comet.

“But we have a very good bitch called Jimary Vixen who is going to make an outstanding stayer,” said Mal. She is now in training in Sydney.

Since then Mal has whelped a four dog and fi ve bitch litter by Bit Chili from Harpo Lady.

“Marty’s damline has done well with Bit Chili

in the past,” said Mal of his reason for choosing Bit Chili.

The scorching Wentworth Park winner Tricky Jade is bred on this cross.

Al Fresco has become a broodbitch great.She is the second dam of current day staying

star Zipping Maggie (Turanza Bale-Natalie Rass).Mal has kept all the bitches from both the

Cosmic Rumble and Bit Chili litters.He reasons it is not every day one can tap into

one of the strongest damlines in the world.

In the meantime, Jimary Comet (to time of writing) is being aimed at the Capalaba Cup by Bob Patching, who got the dog to train from Mal only a few months ago.

“He’d trialled well and I decided to bring them all to Capalaba for a race rather than a trial,” said Mal.

“Bob picked him out straight away. He told me that day he would win the Michael Miller with Comet.

“I left the dog with him that day.”

THE Michael Miller saw some interesting pedigrees among the fi nalists.

Runner-up Busby is by Bekim Bale-Run Rampant. The dam is a daughter of Digital-Wave Top Kate and this is the damline of Follow Through made so famous by Steve Kavanagh which includes Collision and Cosmic Rumble etc.

710 metres advertised to be run fortnightly but rarely do they get a fi eld. If there was a 710 metres race restricted to greyhounds with between 0 and 3 or 4 wins, with a bit of extra prizemoney, people might nominate, knowing full well that they won’t run into any open class dogs,’’ Samblebe suggests.

Any sensible suggestion, as that is, would be well worth a try.

• Darwin greyhounds now race Sunday night with Sky coverage.

It’s a bit confusing for some punters that races one and two are shown on the Sky 2 service then the other races are on Sky 1.

Still, Sunday is as busy with the number of meetings as just about every other day or night of the week.

How about Capalaba racing on Saturday mornings from, say, 10.30am, a race every fi fteen minutes, with fi elds of ten for expanded betting, with TAB and Sky coverage? Way to go!

WITH a record of 20 wins from 24 starts, it’s not surprising that Gippsland sprinter Luca Neveelk is starting to capture the imagination of Victorian greyhound followers.

Especially after the Denison chaser stamped himself as a potential champion with a best-of-the-night effort in the heats of the Geelong Cup.

The Gerald Kleeven-trained 36.5kg blue Talk’s Cheap-It’s A Neveelk dog clocked the fastest time of the eight heats, 25.47, but the most impressive component of the run was the blistering fi rst split of 6.43 - 1.5 lengths faster than the next best effort.

Kleeven has taken his star chaser along quietly after winning at Sale in his racing debut by seven lengths clocking a slick 24.92.

Luca Neveelk (Kleeven spelt backwards) ran third in the Sale VicBreeders maiden series fi nal before winning heats and fi nals at Traralgon, Sale, Warragul and Healsville.

At just his 14th start he made the Bendigo Cup, won by Warrior King but had no luck in the early stages.

His best winning times include Sale 24.67, Warragul 22.46, 25.79, Meadows 30.15, Healsville 18.93 and Traralgon 16.61.

Kleeven admitted his kennel star pinged from the boxes in the Geelong Cup heats.

“But he’s done it a few times before. That 16.61 at Traralgon after only a few starts equalled the track record. He can really begin but he’s a

“The last few starts he’s begun with them or stepped behind. If he can jump with them he’s explosive when he hits the ground.

“If they give him half a chance he’s a pretty powerful dog. He’s 36.5kgs and he’s pretty hard to move. He’s built like a tank.”

The trainer said he had allowed Luca Neveelk to mature and his 30.15 win at The Meadows was managed without a look at the track.

“His best distance might be 500 metres. He won at the Meadows without being there. I just bunged him in the Silver Chief. He’ll run 500 no problems at all,” Kleeven said.

“His quick second sectional breaks them up. The trouble at the moment is there are so many options for him. There’s the Melbourne Cup coming up. I would only dream of having a dog good enough to be a chance in that.”

Luca Neveelk is out of dam It’s A Neveelk which had 54 starts for nine wins and 24 placings including a win in a Traralgon maiden series and a success at The Meadows.

The trainer said he had been involved in greyhounds for more than 40 years and his previous best chaser was Nitro Neevelk, the sire of It’s A Neveelk.

Nitro Neveelk had 68 starts for 21 wins and 17 placings and collected almost $70,000 in

prizemoney. His best wins included fi ve Free For Alls at Sandown with a best time of 29.74 and he ran a slick 29.55 at Traralgon.

Kleeven said Luca Neveelk was by far the fastest greyhound he had trained.

“This bloke is something special, he just wants to race. He’s out of that real good bitch line which includes Bigbad Leesa back to Lara Flynn. It seems to have just clicked with my dog Nitro,” he said.

“Neveelk is Kleeven spelt backwards. I had it as a name many years ago and got it back again. We’ve always bred a few pups, we generally don’t buy dogs although my son bought Nitro Neveelk. We’ve always been a bit lucky.”

The trainer said Luca’s litter brothers Louie Neveelk and Nifty Neveelk had both been winning races.

Louie scored a win at Sale in 29.69 and backed it up with two more wins at Cranbourne in 30.26

and 30.18 to take out the Cranbourne Puppy Classic.

Nifty also won at Cranbourne in 30.24.“Nitro Neveelk was by World Title and they

could be a bit highly strung. Nifty is a bit like that. Louie won the puppy classic at Cranbourne but Luca is the pick of them by a long way,” he said.

“He’ll go to the Melbourne Cup. He deserves his chance and he’ll be hard to hold out to the fi rst turn if he can hit the ground running. He equalled

that Traralgon record and he’s run 5.12 at Sale for the fi rst split which is unheard of.”

Kleeven said Luca Neveelk may just be getting better with racing.

“We can only hope so. We’ve had offers of $50,000 plus and knocked them back. We’re just not interested,” he said.

“The reason you breed pups is to hopefully get a good one you can race. Nothing beats the thrill of racing. You can’t buy that. Luca could get hurt tomorrow and I wouldn’t be upset we knocked back the money.”

The trainer said his son Paul and wife Rosemary were also heavily involved in greyhounds and the trio were looking forward to the next litter by Cosmic Rumble.

“Those seven pups are on the market. We’ll take $5000 for the dogs and $4000 for the bitches, but so far we haven’t had a lot of interest,” he said.

But, you can be sure that when Luca Neveelk wins a decent race in the near future the $5000 will sound like good buying.

Gerald off sick bed for CupIt almost didn’t happen. After more

ruin the night. Gerald Kleeven had

to drag himself off his sick bed to

handle Luca Neveelk in the recent

Geelong Cup.It was a display of strength and

determination from the trainer as much as the greyhound. As Gerry lay in the car struck down with gastro, wife Rose thought he may not be able to handle their prized greyhound in the Cup.

Despite his illness, Gerry gathered the strength to not only handle in the Cup, but to handle the winner in the $64,000 feature.

“He was really sick all week and was lying down in the car before the races tonight,” Rose said.

“I didn’t know whether he would be able to handle tonight because he was unwell but he made it and we’re so happy.”

The Kleeven’s live in the quiet Gippsland town of Denison. Just the two of them, with their greyhounds. They have been training for more than 40 years and bred, own and train Gippsland’s fi nest greyhound, Luca Neveelk.

Luca Neveelk (box fi ve – $3.30) jumped beautifully to challenge for the early lead with eventual runner-up Top Secret (box one – $7.90) for Kelly Bravo. From there it was a battle of strength and the son of Talk’s Cheep and It’s A Neveelk was able to prevail while Peter Akathiotis’ Nockabout Aussie (box eight – $16.80) stormed home on the rail for third.(Source: GRV website)

This year’s 407 metre Young Guns run

at Rockhampton recently highlighted the

strength of racing in Central Queensland

with the event drawing five full heats of

hopefuls on Wednesday, October 8.This resulted in a very strong fi nal run on

October 15th with a win for the Steve Boody (Brisbane) trained Marlin Slayer fl ashing home to win in the time of 23.54 from Velocity Chezon ( Christine Pollard) second and Paul Frederickson`s (Wonsden) in third place.

Whilst I am on the subject of the strength of greyhound racing in Central Queensland, listed below are a few numbers concerning nominations that has to be the envy of most clubs with several club nominations having to be extended to obtain full fi elds.

Wednesday 8th October Rockhampton received suffi cent nominations to fi ll 10 races with 38 not required plus reserves. Wednesday 15th - 10 races, 29 not required plus reserves.

Wednesday 22nd - 10 races with 17 not required plus reserves; and the 29th - 10 races with reserve plus 35 not required.

Not only are the numbers continuing to improve for Rockhampton but also the quality is great.

To highlight this only last week the Dallas Beckett trained Junior Chevez (Dyna Lachlan/Miki Thompson) broke the race record for the 407 metres running a time of 23.15.

This record was previously held by the Darren Taylor trained Cosmic Waters, which also holds the 510 metre record.

Junior Chevez has since been sent to Col Byers in Brisbane with the hope that he can get more suitable races over the longer journey at which he is better suited.

Recently the club has received a couple of emails complaining about the camera angle for the fi nish results at Rockhampton Greys.

As previously stated plans are under way to replace the old tower with a new one in a better position thus improving the photo fi nish angle.

Plans have been drawn and tenders called for on this. Unfortunately the problem cannot be resolved overnight. Remember Rome wasn`t built in a day.

current Rockhampton track record over the 407m in a record time of 23.15 seconds.

On Thursday 30th October 2014 the UQGA will be holding a trophy night for all ten races. The Committee will also be selling raffl e tickets on the night consisting of one $80 betting voucher, one $50 betting voucher and seven $10 betting vouchers. The UQGA are also going to draw a number from 4 to 8 and each dog that comes in that place the trainer will receive a $20 betting voucher.

The UQGA committee wish to thank the Editor of the Chase Magazine for his quick response to a letter sent by the committee requesting two months race program to be added to the magazine and the time frame in which the Chase has been delivered in the past to members.

The GAP has taken up residence at Sovereign kennels at Churchable for a 3 month trial period. We feel that it would be benefi cial for the GAP program to have their own property, as stated by the UQGA committee in the past as mentioned in the Chase magazine in the previous president’s report. We wish the GAP all the success in the future in obtaining their

Heart scare hasnot halted StuartThe life of a greyhound trainer

is always time consuming and

for one Sydney trainer who

combines shift work with racing

it has proved to be a life-

threatening combination.At the age of 68, Stuart Hazlett

got some heartburn while at the track about six months ago, but thought nothing of it.

He fi nally went to his doctor three months back after again getting what he thought was indigestion.

Stuart had no idea what lay ahead. His doctor sent him for a fi ve-hour stress test. At the end he was told at the hospital to see his doctor on the way home.

This had revealed he had suffered a slight heart attack: “When my doctor told me this it was a real shock,” Stuart explained.

“Then at 10.30 that night my doctor rang me and told me to get straight to hospital as the angiogram test had revealed I had three blocked arteries.

“I hesitated at the time about going in that late but I did. You get a little shaken when told the unexpected and you’re mind goes blank.”

So Stuart was told he was to be operated on within the week. Open heart surgery and a triple by-pass have seen his life change instantly.

Stuart had been working as a sorter with Australia Post starting at 4am and getting home around 2pm then doing the dogs and off to a race meeting.

At his age in recent years the body starts to tell you to slow down, and the small signs he was getting was the warning that all was not well.

It has been 10 weeks now and Stuart visited his fi rst race meeting at Goulburn last month, there was no joy from the one runner he had in.

His walk was slower, his stature was lighter and his breathing was slow but in control. But he was back where he has been all his life since a kid and realising how lucky he has been.

When the heart and the connecting arteries start to dysfunction it is an alarming scare for anyone, but Stuart has survived his open heart surgery and with just two dogs in work is taking it very easy.

Stuart has done plenty on the job

front during his life including selling real estate and being a truck driver. His careers have never been a simple 9-5 day, they’re long and at times diffi cult to work in with his main passion.

As a young boy on his parent’s chook farm at Ingleburn, Stuart enjoyed riding a pony past his neighbour’s property that had greyhounds.

His neighbour, George Gram, reared and trained greyhounds and Stuart started to help out.

It was from this time that Stuart became attached to the racing hound.

“George gave me my fi rst dog, a brood bitch named Bright Mariette and she had a litter of six, all were handy chasers,” Stuart remembered.

And it was through his work with George that led him to meeting his wife to be Kerry.

They have two children now, son Clint, who has been a great help to his dad with the dogs and daughter, Kelly, who does a tremendous and tough job as a childcare worker.

Then the opportunity came for Stuart when he purchased his fi rst racing dog which he bought as a pup with George, a youngster by Black Top x Magic Jan and named it Neat Fawn.

‘Good problem’ needs a small tinker

Since the announcement was made of a

large prizemoney increase to Qld racing,

especially the greyhounds, there has been

a boost of enthusiasm from people to

become involved in our code.October saw an increase in nominations

already. Unfortunately though, owners and trainers who have won Class 1 races at Albion Park and now at Ipswich haven’t been able to get their winnings due to the swab ruling which means 1st prize of $5250 stays with RQ until the swab is cleared and sometimes this could take up to one month.

This makes it hard for trainers who receive prizemoney and then distribute this prizemoney to owners or shareholders of greyhounds.

Some trainers do weekly accounts and some do monthly accounts. So maybe our board may have to look at some changes to accommodate the increase. In a way, it’s a good problem to have now that up to $5000 in 1st place prizemoney is paid on a weekly basis.

A couple of solutions come to mind in solving this problem. Firstly, increase the payout limit to say $6000-$8000 so feature race prizemoney wins remain with RQ until swabs are cleared. This way prizemoney can be paid out weekly as we have had before October. Secondly, if this is not possible, is to bring Class 1 1st prizemoney back to $5000 which comes within the weekly payout fi gure and put $250 towards a 4th prizemoney distribution on Class 1 meetings. After all 4th place comes within the medium of betting of fi rst 4s.

We knew it didn’t cover Victorian race meetings when it started out, but happy to see our local Qld meetings covered. We now fi nd Qld meetings are no longer on their site, so what has happened there?

Now only a minor amount of meetings are covered by this app, but if you want form for race meetings on your phone, there is the ‘Hot Dogs’ app which gives you form for every greyhound meeting on a daily basis around TAB betting. I hope something can be done to have ‘The Dogs’ cover Qld again.

It was sad to hear that David van der Giessen is no longer with RQ. I found David very easy to communicate with. He would always return your calls if he was busy working and always put himself out to explain what was happening with future projects in our Industry. He will be missed by many people who had dealings with him. I hope RQ can fi nd a replacement who has communications skills like he had.

Towards the end of the year the QGBOTA will host a big day at Capalaba for members with a free sausage sizzle and treats for the kids. A date will be announced soon.

I have spoken to in recent weeks. Hopefully, a minor problem which can be sorted soon.

Recently I placed a greyhound with the GAP for re-homing. They have recently moved to Churchable, near Atkinsons Dam, and thanks to the generosity of the Uhrhane family they have been able to establish a very comfortable retirement plan for new pets. This property is very well established with many yards and kennel blocks. The GAP staff are utilizing one of the kennel blocks for their work and are very happy

with the outcome, but still, funding is always required to have a successful outcome and I believe in a proposal stated in the Chase article a few months back where $2 for every starter should fund our retired mates, particularly since the signifi cant prizemoney increase.

This was also highlighted again a few weeks ago when Logan was targeted with protestors at the new track site. Honestly, some of these people have nothing better to do with their time. Jeff and Lil Jones, as well as other licensees, went to

Labrador (Gold Coast) at 8am, arrive distribution depot at 9am pick up my allotted bundles of Chase news papers, deliver copies to Qld Racing, Albion Park, Ipswich, Tweed, Lismore, Casino, Grafton which is last stop for today - arrive 4pm. Straight to Village Green Hotel to watch the Eric Thompson Maiden heats at Albion Park while also having a few Carlton Drys. Knotty the publican has them ice cold. Leave about 9pm - a long day.

Thursday October 2: Not leaving for Coonamble till midday, as our driver Bulldog Nay works till 11am and the Blocker can’t get here till 11.30am. Midday we are off - Bulldog, Blocker, Kenny Cherry and me. Have twp Dolly Partons for the trip. Glen Innes at 1.45pm we start on the cartons. Inverell 2.30 we stop for lunch - a small Subway an two schooners. We arrive at Moree at 4pm.

Blocker is half cut and is abusing everyone as usual! Bulldog thinks to himself ‘What am in for here’. 5pm Narrabri, 6.30pm then Pilliga and we arrive at Coonamble 7.30pm - after about seven Jimmy Riddle stops. We book straight into Coonamble motel and head straight to bowling club, our home base for the next 4 days. In there

are our mates – Ray, Chocko and Luggage and leading dog trainers Kim Hyde, Geoff Sattler and friends from Grafton Des and Debbie Winters. We leave about midnight - another long day.

Friday October 3: First day of the carnival, the dogs don’t start till 2.30 so we go to Bowlo for lunch by this time

Legends of our sport like high profi le owner/punter and sponsor Brad Canty all the coalfi elds crew - Johnny Giddas (Zorba), Bretty, Bull Watson, Scotty, Cuz, Sam Cheeto, Stiffy from Dubbo and of course our mates the bookmakers. At 1.30pm arrive on track and drop 2 bundles of Chase papers on the bar. There are 6 bookies on the locals, and one on the interstates. As usual Brian Cleaver has the no 1 stand. He is easily the biggest bookie I have seen in the sport in the 40 years I’ve been involved in the sport. The dogs fi nished that night about 10pm - straight to Bowlo for the rest of the night. Blocker decides he wants to drink JDs and bourbons, which destroy me. I wake up that dusty I think iv been hit by Gordy Tallis.

Saturday October 14: 10am kick-off morning program. I’m hanging in there on the punt, winning a bone (small). Saturday.avo sees the heats of the big maiden. This is where I’ve never seen so much cash getting thrown around. The

biggest plunge of the carnival I saw was a dog call Troy Tez, owned buy former Australian Manly star Terry Hill and trained by his good friends Charmaine Roberts and Shane Stiff. The fl ucs were $3.50 to $1.30 a one stage.

The dog was going to win easy! When one length clear on the side only to fall over smashing a bone in his leg. A cruel thing in our sport. I’m tipping it would of won by 7 lengths. Greg Board with the progeny of his super stud dog Spring Gun cleaned up winning 4 races. All the leading stud masters were there - Cousin Sam, Rocky Ridge Stud, Dave Pringle, Greg Board, Des an Debbie Winters. Fastest time was 17.3. Early night for me home by 10pm.

Sunday October 5: Bulldog, myself and Blocker decide to go to Mungery Picnic races (Stiffy reckons it’s about 2 and half drive ) we get to Narromine miss the turn off and fi nished up at Trangie. ‘Pleeeaze!’ Back to Narromine we go. And get to Mungery 2 minutes before the fi rst.

We backed the winner at $2.50. Bewdy! What’s the problem. Stiffy’s dad, a legend of the picnics, says back Tim Phillips. He has 10 on them! Seven bookies there. The joint is packed. It’s grand fi nal day so I am back on the drink. We back the winner of the cup - ridden by Tim Phillips (owe you a beer Stiffy ) and I win a bone on the day. We leave at 5pm fi rst stop Narromine for a Dolly Parton. We get back to Coonamble at 7.30 right on time for the kick-off in the NRL. I am drinking with my mate Alex. Footy fi nishes I’m kicking on. I don’t know what time I leave but it was late. First race Monday is at 8am – 7am in Qld where I come from. ‘Pleeeaze!’

Monday October 6th (last day of carnival ): Morning program always has a few scratchings. I can’t take a trick and I have a strip out. Afternoon program I back about 6 winners and get square on the day. Carnival is fi nished, Blocker and Zorba want more - they haven’t had enough ( just kidding). A quiet night for us leaving for Grafton

early next morning.Tuesday October 7: Leave Coonamble at 6am.

The road from Coonamble to Coonabarabran 115kms is renowned for plenty of ‘roos. About halfway between Bullodog dodges one only to get his mate on the back drivers door. We think it’s only minor. We get to Gunnedah at 8.30am for breakfast and have a good look. Brett says its about $800 damage. Off we go again. Pass through Tamworth, Armadale and down to Grafton through Ebor. Get there about 2pm and leave mum’s at 3pm (where my car was). I drop Blocker at Casino, Kenny at Tweed, I get home to Qld at 5.30pm. Exhausted, got to bed about 9pm. Fair dinkum you wouldn’t have woken me with a jack hammer.

All over for another year and can’t wait to go again. Huge wrap to Kevin Gordon and his team on a wonderful carnival.

Last month, Jonathan Brown

With the Summer Racing Carnival just around the corner, Jonathan’s appointment comes at a time of great opportunity for greyhound racing in Queensland.

The Summer racing calendar will deliver some exciting feature races, including the Group 3 Ipswich Cup Final on November 15, heats of the Group 1 Brisbane Cup on November 27 and RQ Young Guns fi nal in Cairns on December 13, to name a few.

Edward and Patricia Howard have always

been a strong force on the greyhound

scene in Tasmania for many years.Claiming their fi rst feature race for 2014,

Patricia trained Winklea Vestie to take out the 2014 Tasbred Virbac Vetsearch Maiden Final (452m) at the North West Greyhound Racing Club (Devonport) back in mid-October.

The race is set strictly for Tasmanian bred All-

Age maiden greyhounds, with fi ve heats of the series had been conducted in the previous week.

The acknowledged heat winners were Raz Simpson (Anthony Bullock) in 26.13, Mavista Falls (Anthony Bullock) in 26.15, Dashing Roman (Paul Hili) in 25.91, Lily May Brae (Joseph Pringle) in 25.83 and Loch Roman (Paul Hili) in 25.84.

says that maintaining motivation is the

hardest task when dealing with injury

but has revealed that greyhounds

played a major role in his recovery. Pattinson has revealed that his brother

Darren – himself an international cricketer with England – is a full-time greyhound trainer and during James’ spell with an injured back, helping with the dogs was vital in keeping him occupied.

“I was in a back brace for three months,” Pattinson said. “I think the hardest part is keeping yourself motivated when you can’t actually do anything.”

“I was lucky enough that Darren got into the greyhounds so I spent a lot of time each week travelling around with him to the tracks trialling dogs with him and taking the dogs to the races and for walks. It was about the only thing I could do, I could walk down the street with a couple of dogs.”

Pattinson, who has been back bowling for a month, has been working tirelessly on his action to ensure the injury doesn’t happen again.

“I’ve had to try and address some issues with my back and I’ve been going up to Brisbane and been doing some biomechanics testing every couple of weeks to make sure my counter-rotation (that causes the stress fractures) is getting lower.

“I’ve probably got about another three months until I’m playing cricket as a bowler,” he said.(Source: GRV)

Report shows club’s fi scal strength

Cartwright’s report to members:The focus of the Committee during the past

year has been on moving the business forward, and positioning ourselves as a signifi cant force in the sports entertainment market. Our focus is not only on the local on-course market, but also the opportunities afforded by a burgeoning national and international wagering focus on the greyhound racing product. To achieve this, we need to provide a compelling product into the marketplace. The strategies that we have and are implementing are aimed directly at these goals.

Greyhound Racing at Albion Park is a signifi cant business in the Queensland Racing landscape. Greyhound racing in Queensland last year conducted the most number of TAB meetings of the three codes – 443, with thoroughbreds 440 and harness 314. The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club therefore conducted approximately 17.5% of all Queensland TAB meetings, and around 22% of

all TAB races in the State.Wagering turnover on greyhound racing grew

by 19% in 2013/14 across all wagering channels and accounted for 16% of wagering turnover. Given that greyhound racing at Albion Park accounts for approximately 50% of greyhound racing turnover, the Brisbane Club accounts for around 8% of the State’s wagering turnover.

I am pleased to report that the Brisbane Club

posted a surplus of $368,958 in 2013/14. Since selling our land holdings at Woolloongabba, the focus of the Committee has been to ensure the long term fi nancial viability of the Club. Our Balance Sheet Net Equity increased by 11.8% in 2013/14. We are now positioned as one of the most fi nancially stable race clubs in the State, and we continue to be for the long-term.

Given, the strong performance during the year,

the Committee decided to commence topping-up prize money for races. During 2013/14 we committed $32,000 to feature races during the Winter Carnival. We will continue to do so in the current environment and into the foreseeable future. Where those funds will be allocated will be determined by the Committee once we see the feature race allocations to be provided by Racing Queensland.

But the feature of the pedigree of Busby is that he carries a 3x3 cross of the half brothers Sonic Flight and Larkhill Jo.

And fourth-placed Cosmic Hanify (Cosmic Rumble-Elle Hanify) is another with an interesting pedigree.

Elle Hanify is El Galo-Miss Hanify and this is the famous Brindle county damline that the Northfi elds and more recently Col Graham have nurtured.

The feature of Cosmic Hanify’s pedigree is that it links similarly bred Spiritual Rumble (dam of Cosmic Rumble) with El Galo (sire of Elle Hanify).

They are bred identically being from the Brett Lee sireline and out of daughters of Malawi’s Prince.

And toss in a link between Curryhills Fox (in Spiral Nikita) and his litter brother Curryhill Brute and you have a recipe for success.

THAT man Reg Hazelgrove has been crowing about the ability and promise of a litter of Fabregas-Whirly Storm pups he is just starting to race.

They are headed by Whirly Way a 30.12 heat winner of the Eric Thomson Maiden at Albion Park and then in trouble in the fi nal before fi nishing second to Hard Luck.

Double Storm, a littermate, was also a fi nalist.

It continues the success of Bombastic Shiraz and Whirly Storm which produced Group bitch Wise Forecast.

But in this mating, it also brings in a link between Westmead Flight (in the damline of Fabregas) and Balligari (in the damline of Whirly Storm).

Both Westmead Flight and Balligari have the great producer Westmead Satin as their second dam.

It was a fl ying start for Stuart as the dog won his maiden at Wyong and equalled the track record.

Neat Fawn went on to win six races before breaking a toe at Harold Park.

Stuart has had consistent fortune with his dogs and at the top of the tree is his favourite, Wild Hunch: “He is the best I raced, he won in three States all on city tracks.”

Wild Hunch won 15 races, fi ve at Harold Park and four at Wentworth Park. Then went to Sandown and won before heading to Adelaide for the 1988 cup.

“This was my fi rst Group race and she gave me a great time running second in the heat then she won the semi before fi nishing second in the fi nal,” Stuart recalled.

Other dogs he had success with were - Sinabon Bar, who ran fourth in a National Derby, Bourbon Express, a fi ve-time WP winner, August Knight, Copper Leader, Copper Sunset, High Pitched ( three WP wins), Ocean Foam who won 16 and a Bathurst Cup.

Then Stuart leaves his soft spot for last, Permanent Guest, who he still has at home and the winner of $40,000 in prizemoney.

So how did he win all these races, have success

with nearly every dog he put into a box, did it come naturally?

“I listened and learned. The late John ‘Glider’ McDonald was a great teacher for me,” Stuart tells.

It has been a long training and breeding career for Stuart, one that at times never reached the headlines but there in small print was his achievements.

One contributing factor to this great-natured person is help through the decades provided to other people.

Stuart helped Ruth and Matt Matic start in the sport by selling them their fi rst dog, Eddy Glomar.

Then his education skills in the sport have helped young trainers get a start including 21-year- old Aaron Williams (featured in last month’s edition).

Nearly six decades on from a boy on a pony to surviving one of life’s most incredible operations - not everyone gets the chance that Stuart has had in this sport and he is there to give the next Stuart Hazlett his opening.

A chook farm next to a greyhound property is not the ideal location, but for Stuart it gave him his introduction into the sport and helped him meet his wife of 42 years.

Jason says: “I bought Crown Gem from Gary Clarke some years ago and raced her with success on local tracks then bred her to Go Wild Teddy and kept Teddy She Goes.

“She was always a good little dog with a big heart so decided to breed her to Vapour Whirl. We got seven puppies. While I was away working mum and dad reared the pups for me.”

Jason says he could not have continued training without that help.

It had come to that time of year again

recently with the running of the fifth

annual $5,250 to-the-winner Townsville

Greyhound Racing Club North Qld

Cup (498m).This prestigious race is the second richest

race in Townsville, behind the Group 3 Townsville Cup (498m).

The 2014 T.G.R.C North Qld Cup (498m) Box Draw was: (1) Post Box (Michael Hickmott), (2) Will Mend (Heath Ardle), (3) Webster (Christine Pollard), (4) Myalla Never (Graham Thomson, (5) Cosmic Waters (Darren Taylor), (6) Gunnadoo Racer

(Nancy Maynard), (7) Cool Sprite (Graham Thomson), (8) Flippin’ Ripper (Harold Hovi).

Bluewater mentor Michael Hickmott had continued his great run for 2014 with in-form chaser Post Box, clocking a 28.77sec all the way victory from box one.

Registering the fi rst split of 13.82 along with the run home sectional split of 14.95, the son of Fear Zafonic/You Can Too (Brett Lee/Jeanie’s Queen) had recorded a new personal best of 28.77 from his previous time of 28.84.

Raced by Philip Thompson, Post Box ($2.90) had scored by fi ve and a quarter lengths to Cool Sprite (7) and Flippin’ Ripper (8) for Harold Hovi in third.

It was the greyhound’s 15th career win from thirty-six starts.

The race record was formerly held by 2010 North Qld Cup winner See Blue (Surf Lorian/ Glass Placard) in 29.04.

Post Box would now claim his second feature race in Townsville, since claiming last year’s Anniversary Trophy (498m) in 28.84sec.

The former Brisbane chaser had started his career with Christina Harman back in May of 2013.

His maiden debut was a win over the 520m at Albion Park on 24/06/2013, in a recorded winning time of 30.51 beating Galway Tornado.

The 29kg chaser had continued on another seven starts with a second win over the 520m, in a time of 30.62.

The juggernaut of the Heath Ardle kennel

is gaining even more momentum.The Ayr-based trainer has taken the success

well in his stride, also in the process of claiming North Queensland’s all male greyhound feature, the Townsville Derby.

Former Brisbane chaser Deceptive Size had broken Ardle’s feature race maiden status, when claiming the $1,750 to-the-winner feature race.

The story behind Deceptive Size starts with trainer/breeder combination Reg Kay and Julie Edmondson. Under the guidance of the hall-of-fame trainer, Deceptive Size had sixteen starts in Brisbane with the best wins at Capalaba (366m) (17/05/2014 – WT 19.77) and Ipswich (431m) (25/07/2014 – WT 25.17).

Deceptive Size had then moved to Townsville on the purchase from Heath Ardle, which then went onto have its fi rst career win at the showgrounds circuit in a heat of the Group 3 Townsville Cup.

Unfortunately the greyhound was a luckless fi fth behind the eventual Townsville Cup winner Farmor Las Vegas.

In Deceptive Size’s next three starts, the greyhound would capture its fi rst win over the 498m in a smart 29.32sec.

Now coming into the Derby fi nal, Heath would prepare two strong chances for the all-male dog feature.

Well Mend would record a personal best time of 28.73 in a lead-up run to the derby, but the current Young Guns winner had drawn box six and within a few strides after the start trouble occured, and would not get a chance to take on the race.

Registering the winning time of 29.15 with the registered splits of 14.03 and 15.12, the son of Knocka Norris/Surf Queen had rewritten a new personal best from his old record of 29.32. Deceptive Size, raced and prepared by Ardle at Ayr had scored by three and a half lengths to Gunnadoo Racer (1) (Nancy Maynard) with Black Denim (7) (Rhonda Goodwin) in third.

It was the greyhound’s tenth win from twenty-

one starts.The Ardle kennel capped off a great night, not

only winning the Derby, but with Avondale Tara absolutely blowing the 643m track record out of the water.

With Surf The Highway braking the long standing record just a month ago in the time of 37.93, Avondale Tara recorded a new time of 37.87sec.

The daughter of Knocka Norris/Micro Lee went onto record the splits of 7.09 and 22.01. Avondale Tara had scored by six and a quarter lengths to Surf The Highway (2) and Tokalon Tornado (2) in third.

It was the greyhound’s sixteenth win from fi fteen starts. Avondale Tara is a greyhound who has now won over all this distances with previous wins at the 380m (21.76) and 498m (28.60)

It has been a big year of 2014, for all three

racing codes here in Tasmania.Firstly with the harness racing with the

magnifi cent Beautide claiming the $750,000 Inter Dominion Final early in the year. Then along comes the lion of Longford - THE CLEANER! Even though he did not claim the W.S Cox Plate he still won not only the hearts of the public, but also claiming the time honoured Group 3 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley back in mid-October.

What will still stand in our minds for quite some time is one particular greyhound who has given 55-year-old Mangalore trainer Edward Medhurst the biggest thrill in his career to date - the greyhound who goes by the name of Buckle Up Wes.

Now this greyhound starts off like any other greyhound, being whelped and reared on a farm by two of Tasmania’s well respected icons Robyn and Gary Johnson. Now the Johnsons have been in the sport here in Tasmania for quite some time.

Most of their greyhounds that are raced, whelped and trained by the Husband and Wife team go under the prefi x of Buckle Up, with their farm being called Buckle Up Lodge located at Leith just ten minutes south of Devonport.

Going by my history so far I have seen the Johnsons having star performers such as Buckle Up Tina, Li Li, Mr Issues, Senor Slamma, Punk Tastic and many others I’m sure.

But it’s all about Buckle Up Wes, who is a result whelping of the Collision – Everlong Bale litter.

The June 2011 whelping saw a litter of 9 Pups (4 dogs, 5 bitches), which the litter included Buckle Up Wes, Buckle Up Mason, Buckle Up Andy, Buckle Up Caza, Buckle Up Glenys, Buckle Up Oink, Buckle Up Olitz, Buckle Up Vurlie and Buckle Up Zimil.

When it came to braking in stage, both Robyn and Gary started to notice that Wes was starting to show some strong abilities. With that in mind, the Johnsons then approached Mangalore’s Edward Medhurst to train the greyhound and the rest becomes history!

Buckle Up Wes had begun what was to become a brilliant career back in May 2013, when fi nishing sixth to Action Bolt in 26.20sec.

Then the pin had begun to drop and Wes brakes through to his fi rst win at Devonport on 28th of June 2013, beating Hellyeah Missile by fi ve and a quarter lengths in 25.50sec. The Medhurst trained greyhound continued on with a three-win streak, claiming the 2013 Tasmanian Derby Final at Launceston in a quick time of 29.90.

Looking through Buckle Up Wes’s racing career, you can see that he competed in 2013 state series of the AGRA National Sprint but had fi nished second to She’s All Class for David Crosswell in the fi nal.

The dual training team of Ted Medhurst and Debbie Cannan then decided for Wes to compete in his fi rst interstate trip, in winning a heat of the

Group 1 Sportingbet Vic Peters at Wentworth Park in Sydney.

Due to the bad box draw, Buckle Up Wes was knocked out of the semi-fi nal when fi nishing fourth to Evil Punk.

Wes then returned back here in Tasmania to attempt the oldest Group 1 race in Australia, the Group 1 Hobart Thousand (461m). Wes was beaten by the eventual fi nal winner in Paw Licking, but was successful on the fi nal night by taking out the Consolation in 25.87sec beating Black Rip.

Again the terrifi c Tasmanian chaser then returned to Sydney to attempt the Group 1 Paws of Thunder at Wentworth Park by winning his heat in 29.65, but was beaten in the fi nal by the Robert Britton-trained Iona Seven.

Wes then returned to Tasmania once again to compete in the Group 2 Launceston Cup in February of this year. Wes was knocked out in the semi-fi nal by Hellyeah Bolt, but he then went onto claim the consolation on cup night in an ultra-29.30 winning time.

But now Buckle Up Wes begins his national stardom success, by claiming one of Australia’s greatest races in the Group 1 Australian Cup at

The Meadows beating a star studded fi eld in a time of 29.74 claiming the fi rst place prize money of $250,000 to-the-winner.

That had defi nitely brought joy and pride to owners Robyn and Gary Johnson and Sharon Sutton, along with trainer Edward Medhurst.

Both Buckle Up Wes and Medhurst then continued on the feature race trail, by competing in the time honoured NSW classic, the Group 1 Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg again at Wentworth Park. The son of Collision had been a strong force through-out the series.

Wes was unfortunate to fi nish a strong third to Tonk in the grand fi nal of the Golden Easter Egg.

The Tasmanian star had then ventured later of this year to QLD to compete in the Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park but was just a few strides short to be beaten by Flash Reality in the fi nal.

At the time of writing, Buckle Up Wes has now created feature race history being the fi rst Tasmanian greyhound to both be invited and to win the $150,000 to-the-winner Group 1 Sky Racing Top Gun at The Meadows.

There was plenty of speculation surrounding

the champ, due to the fact that he had not raced for eight weeks since being scratched from the grand fi nal of the national sprint at Cannington.

With the confi dence of trainer Edward Medhurst, Wes was set to take battle against some of Australia’s best sprinters. The greyhound had suffered a tendon injury after taking out the 2014 National Sprint State Final at Launceston.

Drawing box fi ve in the historic classic, Buckle Up Wes had begun brilliantly to lead from go to whoa, to take out the feature in 30.02 well outside of his personal best of 29.74.

Who knows where Buckle Up Wes’s career will now take him but the $460,000 TAB Melbourne Cup is to be well considered.

Such greyhounds as Dilston Prince, Wynlee Wonder, Highland Summer, Chinatown Lad and Bell Haven are considered as top dogs but Buckle Up Wes deserves to become a living legend.

Congrats to Gary, Robyn, Sharon, Ted and Debbie. You have brought Tasmania a champion who deserves his place in history.
