Pinch Hitting
By: Ellie Kiesling
Have you had one of those weeks? Well, Scott has; He started a new job at Florida Medical Hearing Centers in Merritt Island and it is crazy and well, I am PINCH HITTING for him. With my new role, I realized that if I had to PINCH HIT for him in the role of taking the Krusty Krab out of her slip and power her until I put up her sails, I Would NOT be able to do it. This realization is SAD. Knowing this has prompted me to invite anyone (man or woman ), that feels inadequate to pilot their own boats, to join me in a book study called: It’s Your Boat Too by Suzanne Giesesmann. Cheryl Heinbaugh introduced me to this book a year ago and I have not read more than the table of contents. I need both the knowledge and the confidence. The book covers; Safety First, The Fear Factor, Learning the ropes, Nautical Terminology, Rules of the Road, Navigation and Piloting, Communications, Weather, Line Handling, Boat Handling and Docking, Anchoring and Mooring, Sailing, Engines, Systems, Working as a team, Where You Go from Here. Email me at [email protected], if you would like to meet either in person at the Indian River Club, Club House in Rockledge or via Skype, weekly to review the book, It’s Your Boat Too.

Planning ahead for Hurricane Season
It’s May already and June is right around the corner. Translation for sailors, hurricane season is also right around the corner. The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1
st and ends November 30
th. Now is a
good time to put your hurricane plan in place. Planning ahead is key to having your boat survive a storm. Boat US puts out a handy checklist for hurricane preparedness. Items to review aboard are anchors, lines, cleats and pulpits, among others. The document can be found at: http://www.brevardfl.gov/docs/default-source/natural-resources-documents/your-boat-and-hurricanes.pdf?sfvrsn=0 Everyone living and boating in our area has a hurricane story. I’ve got a number of them myself. One in particular is from 1978 when Hurricane Cora was entering the Caribbean and predicted to head toward the Virgin Islands. It had started out, as a tropical wave with 30 mph winds and within a day became a named storm. My family’s ketch was in Salt Pond Bay on St. John an island known for its hurricane hole. In preparation for the storm we moved to Eighth Bay, navigating a small reef to wedge ourselves into a mangrove corner. Several anchors were put out. I was carrying an anchor over branches into the mangroves when a hairy spider the size of my hand crawled onto my bare foot. Suffice it to say, adrenaline will help a skinny teenage girl send a 35lb anchor flying! There were many boats that took shelter in that small anchorage, all of us spent a long tedious day deploying anchors, stowing gear, some removed sail and canvas altogether. Though the storm eventually downgraded and was no longer a threat to the Virgins nobody regretted the efforts they made, even having to retrieve the anchor from deep in the tangled mangroves, to insure the safety of their vessel and crew. Plan ahead and be safe. Fair Winds, Nancy

Don’t miss our next meeting: Chartering in Croatia
Presentation Our guest speaker, Joe Coleman, will give a
Chartering in Croatia presentation on May 10th
at 7:00 p.m., at the ECSA Membership Meeting
at the Satellite Beach Civic Center.
The coast of Croatia looks like it was specially created for yachting. There is everything for which it is worth learning to sail: variety of green islands, rocks, growing directly from the water, sandy and pebble beaches, and the clearest Adriatic water in shades from tender turquoise to dark sapphire. Joe’s presentation will cover their weeklong vacation sailing the Croatian islands.
Cinco de Mayo in Lake Shepard
Saturday, May 6th John and Lynda Gerachi
Let's "taco'bout" the celebration of Cinco de Mayo on Saturday, May 6th. May 5th, 1862 is the day that we commemorate the unlikely victory at the battle of Puebla the Mexican army won over the French forces. Come join us!!
We will be providing the main entree, tortillas and special happy hour drinks. The grill will be lit to warm the corn/flour tortillas/tacos!! Bring a Mexican side dish to share (taco topper suggestions: salsas, cheeses, red beans, black beans, onions, cilantro, lettuce, avocados, tomatoes, jalapenos, other hot peppers). Appetizer suggestions: cheese dips mild/chips, nachos (beef, chicken or bean). Dessert suggestions: tres leches, flan, churros, brownies.
Happy Hour starts at 3:30pm - Bring your own drinks. There will also be two house specialties. We'll update you more on that later!
Dinner will begin before 5pm, especially if we run out of appetizers.
Please note: If you do not like Mexican food, bring your own entree.
Navigation Notes: At the approach to Lake Shepard, stay in the middle of the entrance to avoid the shoals. Remember that the lake is 28 feet deep in the middle, so bring appropriate ground tackle!!
There should be enough room for dinghy docking at our dock - See you there!!

Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month
Kick-off at Squid Lips and Melbourne Air Show Cruise
Saturday April 2 - Sunday April 3
Joe Coleman
This year, unlike many in the past, we had favorable weather for cruising to the dual event. It was a perfect day to anchor out in the Indian River and watch the Melbourne Air show. Arriving by boat to watch the thrilling event were Joe and Karen Coleman with Tony, Shannon and Alexis on Alibi, Don and Joanne Theriault on Impulse, Page and Claudia Proffitt with John Martin and Gail Oliver on Miss Hanna, Kit Temple and Karen Young on Natural High, Clay and Patty Showen on Lone Star, Dave Lauginiger with John and Lynda Geraci on Cool Change, and Grover and Natashia Gregory on Windependence. After the air show, most of the boats headed up to Squid Lips to have dinner and participate in the Child Abuse Awareness Month kick-off. As you may know, Squid Lips donates 5% of all food sales between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. to the Child Abuse Prevention Task Force.

April 16, after which definite plans will begin, based on a consensus of the survey replies. Old business: None. New Business: Page Proffitt announced that the Melbourne Yacht Club Spring regatta for small boats will be April 22-23, and for big boats, April 29-30. MYC Rum races are now on Friday evenings, with the next race on April 21. Ross Herbert announced that he will be cruising up the east coast, leaving in June and returning in October. Requesting crew for any part of the journey. Planning to go as far as Rhode Island and New York area, returning to South Carolina for the August 21 solar eclipse, then up to the Chesapeake Bay area for the Kadey Krogen rendezvous, and back to Florida by the end of October. John Geraci mentioned the upcoming remodeling of the Satellite Beach Civic Center. Since restroom renovations will render the mail hall unusable for meetings, we likely will be relocated to the Schechter Center. Will check on other options, such as Melbourne Yacht Club. Ross Herbert suggested we look into the meeting room at Doubles Hoagies also. This is not likely to be a concern until later this year, but preparations should be made soon. The 50/50 drawing went to Lynda Geraci, who won $28. Refreshment break while we set up for our program speaker. John Geraci who spoke on the topic of upgrading an icebox. Meeting adjourned: 7:43 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, John Boyd, Secretary

Tax Relief / Marker 21 Cruise Saturday April 22 - Sunday April 23
John Boyd
We enjoyed an excellent weekend April 22-23 at the spoil island near ICW Marker 21. The weather was great, with about 80 degree highs and southerly winds both Saturday and Sunday. Most of us had to motor south on Saturday but we had an ideal downwind sail home on Sunday. Turnout was good, with 7 boats: Noel Bauer on Wizard (who ventured down a day early), Tom and Mary Ann O'Shea on Southern Comfort, Diana Seamans and guest Terri on Rayanna, John Boyd and guest Kat on Aspire, Don Theriault and Joanne Becker on their neat little houseboat, John and Lynda Geraci on Avventura, and Bruce and Patti Fletcher on their powerboat. Thanks to everyone for pitching in nicely to bring to the island all the supplies, furniture, delicious dinner and breakfast, and even a bathroom enclosure. Incidentally, the Indian River Lagoon Spoil Islands Project (SpoilIslandProject.org) has a name for our favorite island: "BC37". We all look forward to the next cruise to this lovely area !
