Dear Charlotte Hill Families and Community,
Registration packets for the 2014-2015 school year were sent home with students in
April. If you haven’t registered for next year yet, please do so before the end of the
year. The completed registration forms, along with a current (within the last two
months) proof of address (Nevada Power, Southwest Gas, Las Vegas Valley Water
District bill or lease agreement) may be submitted to our office.
I will begin making classroom assignments this month. Considerable effort is made to
place students in classrooms where it is felt they will have the greatest degree of
success. If you would like to request particular qualities you are seeking in your
child’s teacher, you may send letters to me by Friday, May 16th. However, letters
requesting a specific teacher will not be considered. Teacher assignments will be
mailed to your homes in August.
I can not thank you enough for another fantastic year. You are a huge part of what
makes Charlotte Hill ES a wonderful place to work and learn!
Sincerely,
Jacqueline E. Brown, Principal

Schedule for June 4th
1st-5th grade: 9:10 - 12:40
A.M. Kindergarten: 9:10 - 10:30
P.M. Kindergarten: 11:20 - 12:40
Kindergarten
Kindergarteners have been busy reviewing and
practicing things we have learned this year to
help get ready for first grade! We are currently
reviewing our 50 kindergarten sight words in
groups of ten as part of our weekly homework
activities. Our goal is to have students reading
all 50 words by the end of the year. Other
skills we are practicing are rhyming, breaking
words into sounds, blending sounds into words
and changing sounds in words to make new sounds.
We have been talking about the different names that we use to describe the parts of
shapes: curves, sides, angles, vertices and corners. We will also be using pattern
blocks to build large shapes out of many smaller shapes.
In writing, we are working on how to write a story. Our stories start by introducing a
character and the setting. Next, we describe a problem that our character has. We
end our story by solving the problem for our character. Even though our stories
might only have three sentences, we are telling an entire complete plot with a
beginning, middle and end. A recent example that was created in Mrs. Gibson's class
was:
"Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Gibson went shopping. They could not find a cart to put their
things in. They asked the manager for help and then they finished all of their
shopping."
As you write stories at home with your child, please try to use this basic pattern. It
will be helpful later as your child begins to write more complex stories.
Please keep encouraging your child to work hard during these last few weeks of
school. First grade will be here before you know it, and we want to be sure that our
youngest Hill Hawks are ready!

Third Grade
We hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break! April has been a
busy month!
We have worked hard to complete our Academic Olympics in
preparation for the CRTs. The students will be getting medals for
their efforts in May at an awards ceremony. We also have been
doing a lot of work with nonfiction text. Our Being a Writer Program is focusing on
Expository Nonfiction and students have been learning and writing about many
different animals. They are also learning that there are many ways to write
nonfiction, such as in chapters and alphabet books. In addition, we have been
completing state reports using library books and websites such as Hill Library for the
culture grams and 50states.com. In honor of Earth Day, students will be reminded of
the importance to reduce, reuse and recycle. In math, we continue to do Number
Talks, sample SBAC questions, FASTTmath, and topics in Envision, such as
geometry and problem solving. Please continue to practice math facts and reading
with your students nightly. Our final AIMSWeb Benchmark is at the beginning of
May. One of the areas students will be tested on is oral reading fluency. So, it would
be beneficial to add some oral reading to their nightly practice. Thank you so much
for all of the help that you provide your students at home. It really makes a
Second Grade
The end of the year is practically here! This month our
students will be learning about ladybug and butterfly life
cycles up close. We will be exploring their ecosystem as
well as investigating, observing and describing how these
insects grow and change through their life cycles. We
would like to encourage our students to visit their local
library to help them explore resources available to them this summer. Allowing your
child to practice on a keyboard at home or at the public library is a great way to help
them be successful in the coming years. These sites are recommended to help with
keyboarding skills. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

Gifted and Talented Education Program
The GATE Program offers instruction beyond assigned grade levels to identified
students in grades three through five. Students are eligible with test scores at or
above the 98th percentile on the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test, Second Edition
or the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, Second Edition. Tests are administered by
the GATE specialist assigned to the student’s home school. Students who score
below the 98th percentile may qualify for services with a matrix score of 12 or
above. The matrix includes prior semester grades, as well as parent and teacher
rating scales.
Title 1 Alternative Gifted Services (TAGS) is offered to eligible students in grades
three through five attending Title 1 schools. Students who score from the 90th
through the 97th percentile on either the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test, Second
Edition or the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, Second Edition are provided 50
minutes of differentiated activities each week.
Mrs. Benyuska is the GATE Specialist at Hill ES. She has been teaching in CCSD
for seventeen years. This is her ninth year teaching GATE at Hill ES. Students in
her class enjoy the opportunity to work and think differently while participating in
challenging activities with their peers.
Fourth Grade
As the school year is coming to a close, the fourth graders are busy
preparing themselves for the fifth grade. Throughout this month,
the students will be revisiting previously taught skills and
concepts, as well as continuing to apply them to new concepts to
further enhance their learning. In writing, they are moving from
writing functional nonfiction selections into functional writing and poetry structures.
In science, the students are learning more about the solar system, our Earth and the
water cycle. In social studies, they are continuing the journey with the pioneers and
will be experiencing what it was like to live and work like a pioneer during the gold
rush with our upcoming project. The students are also continuing to work on their
basic typing skills, which will benefit them with both the writing proficiency exams
and the SBAC testing that they will participate in next year. We encourage students to
visit the following website: http://interactivesites.weebly.com for continued practice
with their typing skills. In addition, there are also many wonderful sites for the
students to review, practice and obtain new skills via our schools homepage.

Student Leaders
Student Leaders have been
busy this school year! In
October, they collected warm
clothes for homeless students
in our Outerwear Drive. They
assisted the Legislators who
visited Hill ES in interacting
with a variety of classrooms.
Most recently, the Leaders
collected hygiene products for
homeless Clark County
students. They also were able to meet Frosty, the N.S.P.C.A. dog ambassador, and
have been continuing to encourage classes to bring in money for the shelter to support
over 1,000 animals until they find homes. The N.S.P.C.A. Drive ends May 28th!

Ellie Smith
Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen 2012
Singer, Performer and Award Winning Motivational Speaker will
be visiting
Charlotte Hill ES
Friday, May 23rd
Ellie has touched the lives of thousands, presenting her program
at over 80 schools, to more than 40,000 students!
Ellie’s anti-bullying, assembly-style presentation begins in a form that kids love and
appreciate – a pop music video, featuring Ellie’s original pop song “Don’t Let It Get
to You!” (You Tube, iTunes). The 3-minute video features her original song, set
within a school vignette, and depicts the social bullying that commonly occurs in
most every school. Following her video, Ellie spends a very interactive half-hour
with the students, talking about bullying, especially emphasizing self-esteem and
believing in ourselves. It is Ellie’s goal that, through her message, every student will
be strengthened in self-esteem and self-image: together, primary defenses against
being vulnerable to bullying. Students with healthy self-esteem are bullied less and
tend not to bully others!
Ellie Smith, a senior at Virtual High School, is a singer, actress and performer who
has performed nationally before live audiences numbering well into the millions.
Lost and Found
