w i t h t h e S p i r i t and w i t h t h e u n d e r s t a n d i n g . 11 By t h e way, n e a r l y
a l l of t h a t 1 4 th c h a p t e r of I C o r i n t h i a n s i s g iv e n over t o t h e
u n d e r s t a n d i n g a s opposed t o t h e g i f t of t o n g u e s . I t seems t h a t t h e
Church i n C o r i n th had t h a t e x p e r i e n c e which we f i n d in c e r t a i n
c h u rc h e s t o d a y of s p e a k i n g in t o n g u e s . They were so e n th u s e d by t h e
S p ir i t th a t th e y t a lk e d in what we would c a l l g ib b e r i s h . They
d id n ’t know what th e y were t a lk in g about and nobody e l s e knew.
So P a u l gave ove r t h a t whole c h a p t e r t o t e l l i n g them how f o o l i s h
i t w as , how l j t t l e p r o f i t t h e r e was i n t a l k i n g t o p e o p le who
c o u l d n ’t u n d e r s t a n d , i f you d i d n ' t know what you were s a y i n g y o u r
s e l f and th e y d id n ' t know. He s a i d , I would r a t h e r s a y f i v e words
w i t h u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h a n have a l l of your g i f t of t o n g u e s , and t h i s
em p h a s ize s t h e u n d e r s t a n d i n g in a l l s p i r i t u a l w o rk . Now we u n d e r
s t a n d t h a t S p i r i t q u i c k e n s t h e whole man. E v e ry f a c u l t y in your
c o n s c i o u s n e s s i s q u ic k e n e d by t h e d e s c e n t of t h e S p i r i t . The
S p i r i t i s a m ig h ty mind pow er . And i f you have e v e r t a k e n h o ld of
a g a l v a n i c b a t t e r y , you know what a shock you g e t , and t h e same sh o c k ,
t o a d e g r e e , e n t e r s i n t o one who e n t e r s i n t o s p i r i t u a l c o n s c i o u s n e s s .
Now i f you have n a t u r a l l y much l a n g u a g e , you l i k e t o t a l k , why when
you a r e q u ic k e n e d by t h e S p i r i t your l a n g u a g e w i l l be q u i c k e n e d , and
you w i l l t a l k so f a s t t h a t p e o p le w o n ' t u n d e r s t a n d what you a r e
s a y i n g . You w i l l t a l k in some la n g u a g e d o u b t l e s s t h a t you l e a r n e d
when you were i n a f o r m e r i n c a r n a t i o n . As Emerson s a y s , in one
of h i s e s s a y s , MYou t a l k so much t h a t p e o p le d o n ' t u n d e r s t a n d
what you a r e s a y i n g , you t a l k so v o l u b l y t h a t you d o n ' t put
u n d e r s t a n d i n g in what you s a y . 11 Now as I s a y , t h e r e a l u n d e r
s t a n d i n g of th e c h a r a c t e r of man and how t h e f a c u l t i e s a r e g rouped
in c o n s c i o u s n e s s and what t h i s S p i r i t means, what i t p o u rs in upon
you, w i l l a l l be r e v e a l e d t o y ou . We g e t t h a t q u i c k e n i n g
f r e q u e n t l y , and a l l o f our e m o t i o n s , o f t e n our p a s s i o n s a r e
quickened, but we have u n d e r s t a n d i n g and we know how t o c o n t r o l
t h o s e t h i n g s . We d o n ’t g i v e way t o our f e e l i n g s . We j u s t q u i e t l y
p u t a s a f e t y v a lv e on and c o n t r o l a l l t h a t and t u r n i t i n t o
c o n s t r u c t i v e c h a n n e l s . That u p b u i l d s t h e man. Now we f i n d t h a t in
t h e deve lo p m en t of our powers we ha ve many c o n d i t i o n s t o d e a l
w i t h , m e n t a l c o n d i t i o n s , p h y s i c a l c o n d i t i o n s , and a l l p h y s i c a l
c o n d i t i o n s a r e fo u n d ed upon m e n t a l c o n d i t i o n s * But t h e o ld S a t a n ,
t h e c a r n a l mind has t o be h a n d l e d . Now when we e n t e r i n t o t h i s
s p i r i t u a l c o n s c i o u s n e s s and f e e l what we c a l l t h e h i g h e r v i b r a t i o n s ,
and i l l u m i n a t i o n s , sometimes t h e o ld S a t a n i s q u ic k e n e d in us* Now
i f we gave v o i c e or e x p r e s s i o n t o t h a t S a t a n , i t w o u ld n ’t show f o r t h
v e r y much s p i r i t u a l u n d e r s t a n d i n g or s p i r i t u a l f a i t h , but we know
how t o h a n d le S a t a n . Q u i e t l y deny t h a t any m o r t a l t h o u g h t can
move us t o do a n y t h i n g bu t good, and ifcsfc we a f f i r m t h e power of
t h e S p i r i t , t h e power of l o v e . I have s a i d in my s i l e n c e so m e t im es ,
i n t h e e a r l y p a r t e s p e c i a l l y of my d e v e lo p m e n t , I would g e t i n t o
t h e c o n s c i o u s n e s s of the S p i r i t u a l lijfre and b e f o r e I would know i t
i n my mind I would be f i g h t i n g , and I would be b r i n g i n g my f i s t s
down on th e heed of somebody t h a t I had had a s c r a p w i t h y e a r s ago
and f o r g o t t e n a l l about i t , bu t i t came r i g h t up , f o r what?
Why t o be r ed e em e d . Through what? W e l l , I u n d e r s t a n d t h a t t h a t was
p a r t of my c a r n a l c o n s c i o u s n e s s , t h a t i t was down t h e r e in t h e s u b
c o n s c io u s and i t came up and t h a t i s t h e dead p e o p le coming out of
t h e tomb t h a t J e s u s t e l l s a b o u t , and when t h e y come out of t h e tombs
t h e y have t o be h a n d l e d . He h e a l e d t h o s e l e p e r s t h a t came out
o f t h e to m b . You w i l l f i n d t h o s e come out of y o u r own s u b
c o n s c io u s and t h e y have t o be h e a l e d . You w i l l do t h a t by u n d e r s t a n d
ing t h e s e p r i n c i p l e s . That i s why i t t a k e s a l o n g t im e t o g e t a
good f o u n d a t i o n and p e o p le b a c k s l i d e b e c a u se t h e y h a v e n ’t a good
f o u n d a t i o n . Mrs. F i l l m o r e was r e a d i n g t o me t h e t e s t i m o n i a l or you
might s a y t h e c o n f e s s i o n of a l a d y , a v e r y p ro m in en t w o rk e r in
a c e r t a i n e v a n g e l i c a l work , and she t e l l s t h e r e of h e r e a r l y
e x p e r i e n c e t h a t she f e e l down s t a i r s and b roke h e r a n k l e and mashed
h e r f o o t , and t h e d o c t o r s wdatxxjEfc s a i d f o u r of t h e t e n d o n s in h e r
f o o t were b ro k en and t h a t she n e v e r would be w e l l , she would a lw ays
have a s t i f f a n k l e . They p u t h e r i n a p l a s t e r c a s t and p u t h e r on
c r u t c h e s , and she was i n c o n s t a n t p a i n , but she h e a r d of a
h e a l e r , i n f a c t she was a t e a c h e r I t h i n k a t t h a t t im e in a way.
She w a s n ' t what I would c a l l a U n i t y woman, but she had f a i t h in
t h e Lord J e s u s C h r i s t as h e r h e a l e r and she went t o t h i s h e a l i n g
m i s s i o n . I t h i n k i t was a l o n g t h e l i n e of h o l i n e s s , f a i t h h e a l i n g ,
and she was h e a l e d i n f i v e m in u te s she s a i d by p r a y e r and l a y i n g on
of hands and she f e l t t h a t t h i s p l a s t e r c a s t sh o u ld come o f f and she
t o o k i t r i g h t o f f and put on h e r shoe and w a lked w i t h i n f i v e m in u te s
of th e t im e she went i n t h e r e on c r u t c h e s . She s a i d she c o u l d n ' t
t o u c h h e r t o e t o t h e f l o o r b e f o r e . One would t h i n k t h a t yiaW t h a t
d e m o n s t r a t i o n would make a f o u n d a t i o n in t h a t woman's mind t h a t
she would ns v e r go b ack on, bu t you know i n s i d e of two y e a r s she
s a i d she went back i n t o , w e l l t h e w o r l d l y way, and t h e w o r l d l y
l i f e , and was down w i t h a p p e n d e c i t i s and had a n o p e r a t i o n a t t h e
h o s p i t a l and a f t e r w a r d s she had an o p e r a t i o n f o r a tu m o r , and she
was r e d u c e d t o d e a t h ' s d o o r , and t h e n a g a i n she remembered t h e
Lord and was h e a l e d and now she i s p r e a c h i n g t h e g o s p e l and
d e m o n s t r a t i n g , but L d o n ' t b e l i e v e r i g h t now t h a t t h a t one has
an u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h a t w i l l save h e r i f she sh o u ld be overcome by
t h i s c a r n a l m ind , b eca u se she h a s n ’t h a n d le d i t , £>he b e l i e v e s in
t h e d e v i l and t a l k s ab o u t how b i g he i s and how he i s w a lk in g up
and down t h e e a r t h l i k e a r o a r i n g l i o n , and j u s t a s lo n g as you
b e l i e v e i n t h e d e v i l he w i l l c a t c h you s o o n e r o r l a t e r . So I s a y
t h i s u n d e r s t a n d i n g which we have k i l l s t h e d e v i l . The f i r s t l e s s o n
I g o t was t h a t t h e r e was no r e a l i t y in e v i l or t h e d e v i l and th e
o n ly d e v i l o r e v i l t h e r e was i n t h e whole u n i v e r s e was i n man,
and t h a t man made t h e d e v i l and i t was in me b e c a u se I made a home
f o r h im . And i f you g e t a r i g h t u n d e r s t a n d i n g you w i l l b e g in t o
k i l l t h e d e v i l . You w i l l k i l l h im i n y o u r s e l f . You w i l l den y any
power of e v i l , i n any of i t s f o r m s . Now you may have oceans of
f a i t h . I t i s a good t h i n g , but our f a i t h must be u n i f i e d w i t h our
u n d e r s t a n d i n g ; you must u n d e r s t a n d t h e law s o o n e r o r l a t e r ; you must
u n d e r s t a n d t h e p r i n c i p l e upon w h ich y o u r d o c t r i n e i s f o u n d e d . P a u l
was r i g h t when he s a i d , I p r a y i n t h e s p i r i t , I p r a y in t h e f a i t h ,
b u t I p r a y in t h e u n d e r s t a n d i n g . I p r a y knowing what I am p r a y i n g
t o and t h e k ind of a man I am and t h e r e l a t i o n be tween me and t h i s
mind o m n i p r e s e n t . And t h e n i f you b a ck s l i d e , t h e n i f you f a l l
down, you w i l l be c au g h t up a l o t q u i c k e r t h a n i f you were
s im p ly g o in g a l o n g w i t h b l i n d f a i t h t r u s t i n g t o some o u t s i d e power ,
t h a t J e s u s or God or t h e Holy S p i r i t was g o in g t o h e l p you do t h e s e
t h i n g s . You have t o h e l p y o u r s e l f . The Lord h e l p s him who h e l p s
h i m s e l f . That i s t r u e , a lw ay s was and a lw ays w i l l be t r u e . And so
we s a y t o a l l of our p e o p l e , now you may seem t o be g e t t i n g a l o n g
r a t h e r s l o w l y , you a r e no t p r o g r e s s i n g a s f a s t a s you would l i k e ,
you want i n s t a n t a n e o u s w ork , but i f you have i t and i t d i d n ' t
s t r a i g h t e n out yoUr i d e a s i t would be d e t r i m e n t a l . P eo p le s a y t o
me, "Why d o n ' t you h e a l y o u r s e l f ? You know so much a b o u t t h a t l a w . 1'
I f I h e a l e d m y s e l f t o o q u i c k l y , I w o u l d n ' t know as much a s I am
g o in g t o . 1 t o know e v e r y s t e p of t h e way, and I am no t
o n ly g o in g t o h e a l m y s e l f , b u t I am g o in g t o redeem t h i s body
f ro m a l l t h e i l l s , a l l t e n d e n c y t o o ld age and d e a t h . That i s
t h e r e a s o n I am g o i n g s lo w . I am n o t i n a h u r r y b eca u se I
know I w i l l g e t t h e r e . How? Because ^ have p ro v e n so f a r as
I have gone and l a i d a good f o u n d a t i o n a s u r e f o u n d a t i o n . I am
j u s t as s u r e of i t a s you a r e t h a t two and tv/o a r e f o u r . I know
e x a c t l y what I am d o i n g . I am g o in g on in what you c a l l t h e slow
way. I t i s n ’t a m a t t e r r e a l l y of t i m e , but a m a t t e r of e f f o r t , a
m a t t e r of e n e r g y you put i n t o t h e t h i n g . P e o p le s a y , i t w i l l t a k e
a bou t so many y e a r s . I d o n ' t know how many, bu t i t w i l l t a k e j u s t
as much t im e as I put e n e r g y i n t o t h e p r o p o s i t i o n o r p u t e f f o r t i n t o
i t * In o t h e r w o rd s , how t r u e a r e you t o your p r i n c i p l e , and how
much a t t e n d i o n do you g i v e ? How much a t t e n t i o n a r e you g i v i n g t o
t h i s d i s c i p l i n e t h a t w i l l q u i c k e n your u n d e r s t a n d i n g , t h a t w i l l
b r i n g you i n t o t h i s r i g h t r e l a t i o n w i t h t h e p r i n c i p l e . Now we spend
a g r e a t d e a l o f t im e i n d i s c i p l i n i n g our t h o u g h t s , and s a y i n g t o
t h i s t h o u g h t g o , and t h i s t h o u g h t come* 1’h a t i s f u n d a m e n t a l l y t h e
" y e s ” and wnoM of m ind . The "no" i s t h e d e n i a l . Deny y m i w i t i f
t h o s e t h i n g s t h a t you d o n ' t want and a f f i r m t h o s e t h i n g s t h a t you
do w a n t , and t h r o u g h your f a i t h in t h i s i n e x h a u s t i b l e power of
S p i r i t you see you k e ep b u i l d i n g . And Fa i t h , P a u l s a y s , i s t h e
s u b s t a n c e of t h i n g s t h a t we have h o p e d , or lo o k e d i n t o t h e i d e a l
f o r . I d e a l s a lw ays become s u b s t a n t i a l . You can w a lk r i g h t up t o
h e av en on an i d e a l i f you keep p u t t i n g i t r i g h t u n d e r y o u r f e e t .
What do you put u n d e r your f e e t ? You sa y we pu t e r r o r s u n d e r our
f e e t . No* we pu t t h e s u b s t a n c e of t r u t h , t h e r o c k f o u n d a t i o n ,
C h r i s t . You have t o w a lk r i g h t up on C h r i s t . You sa y when
C h r i s t walked on th e w a te r s he walked on h i s own u n d e r s t a n d i n g .
He had t h a t u n d e r s t a n d i n g in h i m s e l f and in h i s word and he had
a r e a l s u b s t a n c e . T h is r o c k s u b s t a n c e u n d e r our f e e t i s t h e
r e s u l t of u n d e r s t a n d i n g , t h e s u b s t a n c e of t h i n g s , and r i s i n g
s u p e r i o r t o t h a t s u b s t a n c e , lian we must e v e r y one of us r i s e
s u p e r i o r t o our m a t e r i a l u n d e r s t a n d i n g , and we do t h a t by d e n y in g
t h a t t h e r e i s any power in m a t e r i a l i t y , t h a t t h e r e i s any power in
t h i s s o - c a l l e d m a t e r i a l w o r ld t o h o ld us i n b o n d a g e . We a r e c o n s t a n t l y
t r y i n g t o g e t away f rom t h e l i m i t a t i o n of m a t t e r . Now we have
f l y i n g m a c h in e s . That i s t h e m o r t a l m an 's i d e a of g e t t i n g away
from t h e l i m i t a t i o n , t h e bondage of m a t e r i a l t h i n g s . But t h a t i s
o n ly m o r t a l m an 's i d e a . S p i r i t u a l m an 's id e a i s t h a t he d o n ' t need
a machine t o f l y , he can f l y in h i s own s p i r i t u a l c o n s c i o u s n e s s when
t h e body i s r a i s e d t o t h e r i g h t a c t i v i t y . Vftien you p u t i n t h e
amount of e n e r g y t o make i t f l y , you w i l l f l y , and man w i l l n e v e r
be s a t i s f i e d u n t i l he a t t a i n s t h a t c a p a b i l i t y , and i t i s w i t h i n u s .
I f you have e v e r dreamed of f l y i n g , t h a t means t h e S p i r i t i s showing
you t h a t you can f l y . Go r i g h t t o work t h e n and b e g in i n y o u r mind
t o f l y . I su ppose e v e r y one he:® h as dreamed t h a t t h e y have been
f l y i n g a t some t i m e . That i s t h e S p i r i t h o l d i n g t h a t i d e a b e f o r e
y o u r mind, and i f you t a k e i t a s a r e a l i t y and s a y , " I b e l i e v e ncr<
I can f l y , * am g o in g t o f l y , in my m in d ," why soon you g e t t h e
u n d e r s t a n d i n g of how t h e mind l a y s h o ld i n i t s i d e a l s of a
u n i v e r s a l s u b s t a n c e and b u i l d s i t i n t o c o n s c i o u s n e s s and
s e t s op an a c t i v i t y of t h e c e l l s of t h e o rg a n is m and t h e y no l o n g e r
b e l i e v e i n g r a v i t a t i o n and we w i l l be a b l e t o f l y . F l y i n g w i t h t h e
body w i l l be t a u g h t as p a r t of t h e C h r i s t i a n r e l i g i o n . J e s u s
C h r i s t d e m o n s t r a t e d i t and some of h i s f o l l o w e r s d e m o n s t r a t e d i t .
P h i l l i p f l e w down t o Gaza and b a p t i z e d t h e Eunuch • F l y i n g w i l l
become common and we w i l l be a b l e t o f l y r i g h t t h r o u g h t h e a i r
w i t h our b o d i e s . Not e x a c t l y t h e s e b o d i e s , b u t t h e same s u b s t a n c e ,
t h e same c e l l s w i l l be in t h e body , bu t t h e y w i l l be u n d e r a d i f f e r e n t
c o m b i n a t i o n . They w o n ' t be u n d e r t h a t d e n s e , h a r d , c o n c r e t e
c o n d i t i o n t h a t we have t o d a y , bu t t h e y w i l l be f i l l e d w i t h an
e n e r g y and we w i l l j u s t go r i g h t t h r o u g h t h e w a l l s Anywhere we
want t o , j u s t by t h e power of o u r own t h o u g h t , j u s t a s you dream
you f l y . That i s p o s s i b l e t o e v e r y one of u s . D o n ' t t h i n k i t
may be p o s s i b l e t o some p e o p le but you c a n ' t . You c a n . A l l you
have t o do i s s t i c k t o your p r o p o s i t i o n . I g i v e you t h a t as a
s c i e n t i f i c f a c t t h a t we w i l l a l l sometime l e a r n , and we w i l l l e a r n
t h e law l y i n g back of t h a t s c i e n c e . So I know in e v e r y t h i n g we do
t h e r e i s a s c i e n c e b ack of i t . The day of m i r a c l e s , t h e ch u rc h s a y s ,
i s p a s s e d . So i t h a s . rf h e r e n e v e r were any m i r a o l e s , i f t h e y mean
a law s u p e r i o r t o what we may e x e r c i s e t o d a y , and t h e law w h ich was
p r a c t i c e d i n t h e p a s t i s f o r e v e r y one of u s . how t h e s im p le
p r o p o s i t i o n i s a r r i v e d a t t h r o u g h what we c a l l t h e h e a l i n g . H e a l i n g
i s b a sed upon t h e law and i f you a p p l y t h a t law in i t s s i m p l e s t
f o r m s , you can go on t o h i g h e r and f r e e r and g r e a t e r a p p l i c a t i o n s .
So we must b eg in r ig h t where we a r e , b e l i e v i n g and h e a l in g f i r s t .
and t h e n g e t th e u n d e r s t a n d i n g why we b e l i e v e , and t h e n we go on t o
a more s c i e n t i f i c a p p l i c a t i o n of t h e law , and a f t e r a w h i l e we
g e t so SEStxsiiii w e l l g rounded in t h a t t h a t we c a n ' t be sw e rv e d . We
c a n ' t be c h a n g e d . We would s a y we u n d e r s t a n d t h e T r u t h . We know
what J e s u s s a id when he s a i d , you s h a l l know t h e t r u t h and t h e
t r u t h s h a l l make you f r e e . F r e e f ro m what? Why your i l l s , a l l of
t h o s e wrong c o n d i t i o n s t h a t you have s e t up i n your mind and body,
and i t i s p o s s i b l e f o r us e v e r y one t o be f r e e f rom t h o s e
W o u ld n ' t t h a t be a g l o r i o u s day i f we co u ld be f r e e a l l a t once?
I d o n ’t know t h a t we w i l l e v e r have t h a t d ay , b ecause i t i s an
i n d i v i d u a l d e v e lo p m e n t . You roust a p p l y t h e law y o u r s e l f , and when
you b e g in t o a p p l y t h e law, you w i l l g e t r e s u l t s . P e o p le s a y ,
1 d o n ’t want t o be h y p n o t i z e d by a u t o - s u g g e s t i o n , by j u s t s a y i n g
words o v e r and o v e r . But t h a t i s an e a s y way t o b e g in i s n ' t i t .
and you w i l l be s u r p r i s e d a t t h e r e s u l t s you sometimes g e t t h r o u g h
j u s t r e p e a t i n g some words and forms of w o r d s . Lord Curzon and h i s
w i f e had been a l l ove r Europe t o be h e a l e d , and a lo n g came t h a t
l i t t l e o ld d r u g g i s t , Coue, and s a i d t o them , now you j u s t s a y ,
”E v e ry day in e v e r y way, I am g e t t i n g b e t t e r and b e t t e r , ” and t h e y
were s im p le minded enough t o do i t and l o and b eh o ld t h e y have been
h e a l e d and now t h a t coming t h r o u g h r o y a l t y as i t d id has been

where you a r e and count your beads and say your words and a f t e r a

what i s t h e law back of t h i s — t h e power of t h e w o rd . J e s u s

I f you would s ay e v e r y d a y , " I am S p i r i t , and I am p e r f e c t l y whole

cou ld a c c e t t h a t , and t h a t w o rk s , but i t w o u ld n ’t work t o any g r e a t
d e p t h i n c o n s c i o u s n e s s b e c a u se t h e cau se of a l l our t r o u b l e s l i e s
d e e p e r t h a n t h a t . That i s t h e spoken w ord , o r as J e s u s s a i d , t h e
loud v o i c e . You know when J e s u s spoke t o L a z a ru s he spoke w i t h a
lo u d v o i c e , i 'h a t means t h e spoken w ord , and t h a t o u t e r v i b r a t i o n , t h e
