CharlesAlfredDonnell,Jr.diedpeacefullyon July 14, 2017 at his home, EvergreenWoods inNorthBranford,CT.Chuckwasborn on November 23, 1931 in Chicago,Illinois, to Vivian Linnea Nelson Donnelland Charles AlfredDonnell, Sr. Hewas aman of deep allegiances: to Zoe KellyDonnell,theloveofhislifefor66years,tohis large and loving family, to the city ofhisbirthandhisbelovedCubs,andtohisalmamater.Chuck received a BA from CarletonCollege in Northfield, Minnesota, from1950to1954.HewentontoearnanMBAfromtheUniversityofNewHaven.HeandZoe,whomhemetatCarleton,marriedin1956 and embarked on a lifetimetogether,raisinga familyof fourchildrenandeightgrandchildren,sharingaloveoftheater andof laughter. Theymade theirfirsthomeinWisconsinandthenforover40yearsinConnecticutasChuckpursuedseveral chapters in his professional life.Overthecourseofmorethanthirtyyears,from 1954 to 1987, he worked for onecompany as it evolved from MarathonPaper Company into the American CanCompany and then Primerica. Directlyafter college he served in the Army inLouisiana from 1954 to 1956 during theKoreanWar.Chuck began volunteering at Carleton ayear after his graduation. In 1987,following his time in the businessworld,Chuckembarkedona secondcareerasafundraiser for Carleton, retiring in 2010.Hebridgedtheacademicandthebusinessworlds and he was proud of thecontributions his work brought toCarleton.Generous in every sense of the word,Chuck was known for his businessacumen and for his bear hugs which—withhis6'4"frame—wereenveloping.
His warmth set everyone at ease.Gregarious, insightful, and quick witted,Chuck was known for his memorablephrases. His family remembers amongthem, "It's not the things you do, it's thethings you don't do you regret," "Make'emsayno,"and"Itaddsup faster ifyouusebignumbers."Cherishedbyhisfamilyand treasured by his friends, he willalwaysbemissedandremembered.He is survived by his wife, Zoe; by theirfourchildren:DouglasandwifeDeb,Kellyand partner Duke, David and wifeMelanie,Zoieandhusband Jonathan;andeightgrandchildren:Kiera,Sonai,Carson,Zoey, Emily, Austin, Willa, and Theo.ContributionsinChuckDonnell'smemorymay be made to Carleton College, OneNorthCollege,Northfield,MN55057.
